Report: Chargers to bring in pair of running backs for workout

The Los Angeles Chargers are looking to bring in a running back to potentially fill the void of injured Justin Jackson.

According to NFL Media’s Tom Pellisero, the Chargers are bringing in running backs Jordan Scarlett and Brian Herrien for a workout.

The move comes after RB Justin Jackson left the season opener against the Bengals with a quad injury.

Coach Anthony Lynn said that he was unsure how severe Jackson’s injury was, and that the team was going to take it day-by-day.

The Panthers selected Scarlett in the fifth-round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Scarlett appeared in nine games as a rookie, mainly contributing on special teams.

Herrien signed with the Browns as an undrafted free agent this past April. In four years at Georgia, he averaged 5.1 yards per carry, with 277 carries for 1,413 yards and 13 touchdowns, adding 28 receptions for 167 yards and two touchdowns.

Former Georgia RB Nick Chubb enters NFL concussion protocol

Former Georgia Bulldog Nick Chubb has entered the NFL’s concussion protocol after taking a hit to the head/neck area in training camp

Former Georgia Bulldog Nick Chubb has entered the NFL’s concussion protocol after taking a hit to the head/neck area in training camp. The Cleveland Browns running back finished second in the NFL in rushing yards (1,494) last season behind Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry.

The former UGA standout has played in every game throughout his two year NFL career. Cleveland will miss him should he miss any game action. Hopefully, Chubb can heal up soon and get ready for the start of the NFL season.

The Cleveland Browns open their season against the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 13. Kareem Hunt will assume the starting role in the Cleveland backfield until Chubb returns. Chubb must go through the various steps of the protocol before he’ll be able to fully return to practice and eventually able to play in a game.

Chubb is a key fixture in Cleveland’s offense. The Browns will look to improve upon their 6-10 record from last season.

We will provide updates on the status of Chubb’s recovery. His injury could open the door for Cleveland to bring back former Georgia Bulldog Brian Herrien. The Browns previously cut Herrien this offseason.

Cleveland Browns waive former Georgia running back

The Cleveland Browns have waived former Georgia Bulldogs running back Brian Herrien.

The Cleveland Browns have waived former Georgia Bulldogs running back Brian Herrien. The Browns picked up Herrien as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 NFL Draft.

Herrien is a victim of the NFL’s shortened preseason (there’s no preseason games due to COVID-19). Additionally, NFL teams have a much smaller initial roster size than in previous years. In a normal season, Herrien would’ve played in a few preseason games and had a chance to display his abilities.

Instead, Herrien has barely had an opportunity to show his talent and work ethic. Herrien has been doubted before. He overcame a low rating as a high school recruit to see immediate playing time in Georgia’s loaded backfield in 2016. The Georgia Bulldog great will look to do the same in the NFL.

He ran for 490 yards and scored six touchdowns last season for the Dawgs. Herrien will look to find a new NFL home as soon as possible. Best of luck to Herrien.

Brian Herrien may have a better opportunity to earn carries for another NFL team. Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt are very talented running backs and wouldn’t have ceded many carries to a rookie.

Throwback to his incredible catch this past season against the Florida Gators:

Jamie Gillan activated, Garrett Gilbert goes on Browns’ COVID-19 reserve list

Punter Jamie Gillan is activated while QB Garrett Gilbert is placed on Browns’ COVID-19 reserve list

The Scottish Hammer is back on the active roster.

In a series of roster moves on Monday, the Cleveland Browns activated punter Jamie Gillan from the reserve/COVID-19 list. Gillan went on the list on Saturday but quickly came off. The popular second-year punter admitted he had previously tested positive earlier in July and did suffer symptoms at that time, but tested negative twice last week before testing positive again.

It’s a complicated situation regarding the testing status. The best explanation comes from NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero, the man who Gillan told about his earlier positive test. From Pelissero’s twitter on Monday morning,

As Gillan comes back onto the active roster, the Browns placed reserve QB Garrett Gilbert on the reserve/COVID-19 list. The team also waived Brian Herrien, an undrafted rookie running back from Georgia.

Brian Herrien: What the Browns are getting in their UDFA RB

Brian Herrien: What the Browns are getting in their UDFA RB

We have been diving into this deep and impressive undrafted free agent class that the Cleveland Browns signed and we are going to take a closer look at another extremely talented pick-up today. Out of the 15 prospects snagged after the 2020 NFL Draft’s completion, the talented back out of Georgia may be the most intriguing.

Name: Brian Herrien

Position: Running Back

School: Georgia

Height: 5-11

Weight: 209 pounds

Strengths: Herrien not hearing his name called is a major surprise as most pundits had him etched in the middle rounds. Although he was never the main back at RBU, this could also be seen as a positive as Herrien has a ton of tread left on his tires and he was sitting behind absolute studs in early round selections like current Brown, Nick Chubb, Sony Michel and D’Andre Swift. Herrien checks all of the measurement boxes you look for in a prototypical NFL running back and as evidenced by last season’s Florida contest in the clip below, Herrien has the ideal hands to contribute in the passing game.

Weaknesses: As stated above, Herrien was viewed by most as an easy middle-round prospect, but it is easy to see why NFL teams have concerns. Herrien never earned enough trust from the Georgia coaching staff to earn lead back consideration. We talked about all of the early-round talents ahead of Herrien while at Georgia, but he also failed to beat out Elijah Holyfield, whose NFL career is hanging by a thread and that is also concerning. The most carries Herrien ever received in a collegiate game was in 2016 against Tennessee with 15 rushing attempts and that should absolutely raise concerns.

Overall:

Herrien has the potential to contribute on a consistent basis in the NFL and has shown flashes of excellence when given the opportunity, but those opportunities were few and far between. A common comparison is to current Arizona Cardinals RB Kenyan Drake and this makes sense due to their unfortunate college situations and intriguing athleticism. Herrien isn’t quite on that level, but has all of the potential to play in the NFL and have a much better professional career than what he had in college.

Georgia RB Zamir White a top 10 RB prospect for 2021 NFL Draft

Georgia football RB Zamir White is considered a top-10 ball carrier in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Pro Football Network recently released their list of the top-10 running back prospects for the 2021 NFL Draft.

Georgia red-shirt sophomore Zamir White (Laurinburg, North Carolina) comes in at No. 8, which is 3rd in the SEC behind Alabama’s Najee Harris and Mississippi State’s Kylin Hill.

Pro Football Network wrote:

“White is a blend of size and speed but has never been healthy for a full season. The best thing for his draft stock is simply staying healthy. Don’t be surprised if White ends the season as the consensus RB1, or if the injuries were too insurmountable.”

Former Georgia star back D’Andre Swift was drafted to the Lions in the 2020 NFL Draft and with the departure of Brian Herrien too, many believe White will be the next man up in an always talented Georgia running back room.

White’s college career so far still holds more questions than answers. The No. 1 running back in the 2018 recruiting class, White was considered to be the next great Georgia running back by many. After tearing his ACL in his left knee his senior season at Scotland High School, White enrolled at Georgia in 2018. He worked his way back from his first ACL tear only to suffer another one, this time in his right knee two weeks before the Bulldogs’ first game.

Knee injuries are always scary, especially for skill position players, so we weren’t sure if we would ever see White on the field for Georgia. However, he persevered, and after a tough rehab and red-shirting in 2018, White was able to suit up in 2019 and carried the ball 78 times for 408 yards and three touchdowns.

A small glimpse for sure, but NFL draft analysts have taken notice. White has already battled his way back from two serious injuries, so I think it’s safe to say he is ready for a big season in 2020 and it would be awesome to see such a hard worker do great things for the Bulldogs.

Georgia RB Brian Herrien, a fan favorite, signs UDFA deal

Georgia football RB Brian Herrien has signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Cleveland Browns following the NFL Draft.

Georgia running back Brian Herrien, a fan favorite during his four years as a Bulldog, has signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Cleveland Browns, WSB-TV’s Zach Klein reports.

During his time at Georgia, Herrien served as a backup to NFL backs Nick Chubb, Sony Michel, D’Andre Swift and Elijah Holyfield, but always made the most of his opportunities when on the field.

As Klein said in his tweet, Herrien runs angry. And when he does, he has no issue running over you.

Herrien accumulated 1,413 rushing yards in four seasons at Georgia, adding 15 total touchdowns.

Comparing Georgia’s 2019 roster to NFL Combine measurements

Does the official Georgia Bulldog roster fib about the size of players?

Several Georgia Bulldogs received their NFL Combine measurements a few weeks ago, but how do those compare to how they’re listed on the 2019 University of Georgia roster? There’s always been the theory that college football teams exaggerate the size of certain players.

It certainly holds true in some cases. For example, the NBA recently cracked down on teams who were listing their players at taller heights.

It must be noted that these players could have gained or lost weight ahead of the 2020 NFL Combine, but for the most part it will tell fan show big and tall UGA players are and if the roster is fibbing.

Quarterback Jake Fromm:

UGA roster: 6’2″, 220 LBS

NFL Combine: 6’1 7/8″, 219 LBS

Running Back D’Andre Swift:

UGA Roster: 5’9″, 215 LBS

NFL Combine: 5’8 1/4″, 212 LBS

Running Back Brian Herrien:

UGA Roster: 6’0″, 210 LBS

NFL Combine: 5’11 1/8″, 209 LBS

Kicker Rodrigo Blankenship:

UGA Roster: 6’1″, 191 LBS

NFL Combine: 6’1″, 190 LBS

Left Tackle Andrew Thomas:

UGA Roster: 6’5″, 320 LBS

NFL Combine: 6’5 1/8″, 315 LBS

Guard Solomon Kindley:

UGA Roster: 6’4″, 335 LBS

NFL Combine: 6’3 1/4″, 337 LBS

Right Tackle Isaiah Wilson:

UGA Roster: 6’7″, 340 LBS

NFL Combine: 6’6 1/2, 350 LBS

Wide Receiver Lawrence Cager:

UGA Roster: 6’5″, 220 LBS

NFL Combine: 6’4 6/8″, 220 LBS

Tight End Charlie Woerner:

UGA Roster: 6’5″, 245 LBS

NFL Combine: 6’4 5/8″, 244 LBS

The verdict? Georgia isn’t significantly fibbing about the size of players. UGA is more likely to be adjusting the heights, but not by more than an inch. The NFL Combine uses more precise height measurements than UGA’s roster.

What have we learned from Georgia football alumni at the NFL Combine?

In which we compile all of this week’s posts pertaining to former Bulldogs at this week’s NFL Scouting Combine

For those who can’t focus the ideal amount of attention to Georgia football news, I’ll compile some of this week’s posts pertaining to former Bulldogs at the NFL Scouting Combine:

Brian Herrien provides a recollection of Nick Chubb’s encouragement.

Both of Georgia’s invited tailbacks were faster than Florida’s only invited tailback.

D’Andre Swift proved speedier than his two most famous former teammates.

J.R. Reed can do it all.

Charlie Woerner is a man among boys.

In other news:

The basketball Bulldogs stuck out a nervous victory over Arkansas sealed by an Anthony Edwards dunk.

The baseball Bulldogs embarrassed Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Fewer than twenty hours prior, Scott Stricklin’s Bulldogs edged out the Yellow Jackets by a score of six to five.
