Purdue vs Indiana Game Preview

Why Purdue Will Win

Purdue is a machine.

There are parts that don’t work quite right, and a few more big plays from defense would be nice, but the inside game is unstoppable, the D is great from three, and the wins keep on coming.

Indiana’s defense is hit-or-miss, the offense doesn’t come up with the threes needed to go over the top of Zach Edey and Purdue D, and there aren’t enough takeaways to come up with the defensive stops needed to make the road side have to push.

However …

Why Indiana Will Win

This is a different Hoosier team at home.

The rebounding is great no matter where it plays – it should be able to match up with the Boilermakers board for board – and the offense works it around well enough to get the right shot.

The team passes it around enough to get past the Purdue D that doesn’t force takeaways – it’ll attack on the inside and won’t be worried about the size in the interior.

No, Indiana doesn’t do anything from three, but it makes them when it takes them. Purdue just doesn’t mess with the outside shots because it doesn’t have to.

So …

What’s Going To Happen

Indiana has the right blend of things in place to pull this off.

Purdue hasn’t had to stretch its scoring legs yet. It”ll have to do it here.

It’s not going to get battered on the boards – it should win the rebounding margin – it’s going to get the fast break points Purdue won’t, and the home court advantage is going to kick in large.

IU is 11-1 at home, and that’s about to continue in a fun back-and-forth game that should set the tone for a big Hoosier finishing kick.

Penn State vs Purdue Game Preview

Why Penn State Will Win

There wasn’t a whole lot of luck against Purdue in the 76-63 loss in State College back in early January, but the Nittany Lions have been about to scratch and claw since then to keep the season alive.

They can’t hang inside with the Boilermakers and they can’t let this bog down. Their one shot against the No. 1 team is to bomb away, keep bombing,, and make everything.

In the first meeting they weren’t good enough from three, but they have the ability to go on runs by setting up the open outside look. They’re not going to turn it over and give up fast break points, Purdue’s defense doesn’t do anything to take the ball away, and …

Why Purdue Will Win

If Penn State doesn’t go off from the outside, forget it.

It’s just 1-4 in true road games this season, and that one victory came when it couldn’t miss anything from three against the Illini.

Purdue should be able repeat the performance from the first time around. Keep pounding it inside – Zach Edey scored 30 – and don’t hack away enough to put the Nittany Lions on the line.

Penn State only shot three free throws in the first meeting – it made them all – and the threes weren’t able to make up for the efficiency of the Boilermaker offense, so …

What’s Going To Happen

Can Purdue stay focused? It’s been rolling at home, it should be able to score anytime it wants on the inside, but Penn State is going to pack everything inside.

Everyone tries that to some extent, but the Nittany Lions will have to sell out. It won’t matter. Purdue’s deliberate style and rebounding will be enough to ease through this after overcoming one early barrage of threes.

LSU beat Purdue to win the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl. What happened, who was the player of the game, and what does it all mean?

Cheez-It Citrus Bowl What Happened

LSU totally dominated from the start. It scored the first 49 points with Jayden Daniels finding Mason Taylor for a 32-yard score, Garrett Nussmeier threw two touchdown passes, and with Noah Cain running for two nine-yard scores as part of the barrage. Malik Nabers caught a 75-yard touchdown pass from Nussmeier, and threw a short scoring pass to Daniels on a trick play. LSU did whatever it wanted.

The Purdue offense didn’t do much of anything until late – it had fewer than 40 yards of total O in the middle of the third quarter. The attack moved a bit in the fourth and finally scored on a TJ Sheffield 16-yard grab, but that was it for the fun. There was a chance to score in the final minute, but LSU’s Quad Wilson took a pick the length of the field to close out the win.

Four different Boilermakers threw a pass. They were depleted of normal starters, talent, and their head coach, but they were outgained 594 yards to 263. And again, most of Purdue’s yards came late.

100 Best Bowl Players | Ranking How Good the Bowls Were

Cheez-It Citrus Bowl Player of the Game

Jayden Daniels, QB LSU
He completed 12-of-17 passes for 139 yards and a score, ran six times for a team-high 67 yards, and he caught a five-yard touchdown pass.

Cheez-It Citrus Bowl Fun Stats

– LSU was 7-of-12 on third downs and 2-of-3 on fourth downs. Purdue was 4-of-18 on third downs and 3-of-7 on fourth downs.

– LSU WR Malik Nabers caught nine passes for 163 yards and a score, and he completed both of his passes for 50 yards and a score.

– The four Purdue quarterbacks completed 19-of-42 passes for 169 yards and a touchdown with three picks.

Cheez-It Citrus Bowl What It All Means

LSU closed out a terrific first season under Brian Kelly with a tenth win – the program’s first double-digit winning campaign since the national title run in 2019.

Coming off the 11-12 run since the CFP championship, and after the loss to Florida State to start the season, LSU still beat Alabama, got to the SEC Championship, and showed the potential to take a giant leap forward now that Kelly and staff have settled in.

Last year’s Texas Bowl might have been missing – way too many starters were missing in the loss – and now it won four of its last five bowls and six of its last eight and since 2000, 15-7.

Purdue was obviously a shell of its 2022 self. The program is in a reboot after losing head coach Jeff Brohm to Louisville and with Ryan Walters set to take over, and it looked like it. It was missing way too many starters and key parts to deal with a team as deep and talented as LSU. It couldn’t do anything until the competitive aspect was long, long over.

Even with this loss, it was the first time the program came up with back-to-back winning seasons since 2006 and 2007. In bowls, Purdue is 4-3 in 2007.

LSU vs Purdue Cheez-It Citrus Bowl 5 Things To Know

Cheez-It Citrus Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

For the second straight bowl game, LSU is playing a bunch of guys wearing the uniforms, but the main men are done. The team will hardly be a proper representation of the 2022 self.

It was a great first season under Brian Kelly with a win over Alabama and a trip to the SEC Championship, but if it seems like just about everyone has opted out, or is injured, or both, it’s because that’s the deal. From WR Kayshon Boutte, to dangerous pass rusher BJ Ojulari, to … this could go on for a while.

Purdue is playing a bunch of guys wearing the uniforms, but plenty of the main men are done, including the head coach. Jeff Brohm made a lateral move to Louisville, but another Brohm – brother Brian – will coach in the bowl while new head coach Ryan Walters waits in the wings. The coaching, though, isn’t the issue.

QB Aidan O’Connell is out, so is top TE Payne Durham, so is star WR Charlies Jones, so is … this could go on for a while.

Purdue has been okay in bowl games, but it’s usually the team that has the full complement of players. Last year it won a Music City Bowl thriller over Tennessee, and was 2-1 in bowls under Brohm and 4-2 going back to 2007.

LSU has been wonderful in bowl games over the years. Again, last year’s team was a shadow of its normal self in a sad Texas Bowl loss to Kansas State, but before that it won three straight before that – two of them in the College Football Playoff including the national title. Before last year it was 5-1 since 2014 and 17-7 since 1989.

The Citrus Bowl hasn’t been too bad lately, but ie’s on a bit of a rough run over the last decade. Last year’s 20-17 Kentucky win over Iowa was interesting, even if there weren’t a ton of fireworks. Three of the last five have been close, but nine of the last 13 were decided by double-digits.

CFN Experts Picks: Jan 2 Bowls

Why Purdue Will Win The Cheez-It Citrus Bowl

The passing game should still work.

Aidan O’Connell might be out, but Austin Burton is a big passer who’s just seasoned enough to be okay. He stepped in against Florida Atlantic and hit 72% of his passes for 166 yards and three scores, but he hasn’t done anything since with O’Connell leading the way to the Big Ten Championship.

The midrange passing game might not be quite as sharp, but it’ll keep things moving, the offensive line should be able to hold up, and for a team that throws like Purdue does, the running game is every bit as important.

The Boilermakers are 6-0 when running for more than 111 yards, and 2-5 when they don’t. The backs are still in place to mix things up a bit.

LSU is 0-3 when allowing more than 210 rushing yards and 9-1 when it gives up fewer. Purdue has to at least give it a try with 35 carries or so.

But …

Top 100 Bowl Players | Ranking Bowl Games So Far

Why LSU Will Win The Cheez-It Citrus Bowl

Jayden Daniels is supposed to give it a go.

The LSU quarterback is dinged up, but he’s coming back for the 2023 season and he should be able to play in this. In a game that’s missing a whole lot of key parts, having Daniels as a steadying factor might make all of the difference.

When the offense is moving, it’s great on third downs, there’s enough of a running game to balance things out, and when Daniels is in a groove, the passing attack can go off. It was in comeback/keep up mode, but the offense threw for over 500 yards against Georgia in the SEC Championship.

Oddly enough, Purdue wins when it gives up a ton of passing yards – it’s 6-2 when allowing 200 yards or more. It’s more about its own offense, and that’s where the LSU defense has to kick in.

As long as the defensive front can hold up against the run, and if the offensive line can give Daniels time …

Why Purdue Will Win

Michigan is playing for fun.

Last year the Wolverines had to beat Iowa in the Big Ten Championship to cement a spot in the College Football Playoff. Here’s the big difference – the 2021 team was 11-1, this one is 12-0. Last year’s team had to win, this one can lose and still – almost certainly – be in.

That doesn’t mean Michigan won’t care, and it would sure like to be a back-to-back Big Ten champion, but from star RB Blake Corum’s season-ending knee injury, to star DT Mazi Smith facing a felony weapon charge that was filed this week, to coming down off the high of rocking Ohio State 45-23, there’s a chance the full focus and intensity might not be all there.

Think 2021 Georgia. Of course it wanted to beat Alabama, but it didn’t bring its A game to the SEC Championship, and the other side cranked up the intensity to win with the College Football Playoff possibly on the line. What’s Purdue’s motivation? How about the Rose Bowl as the 2022 Big Ten Champion?

There’s one other big difference between this year’s Big Ten Championship and last year’s version. Purdue will bring the offense Iowa didn’t.

The passing game hasn’t ripped it up lately, but it’s been steady, effective, and it’s been able to come through when needed. Turnovers aren’t an issue over the three-game winning streak to get here, the running game hasn’t been bad, and QB Aidan O’Connell has been around long enough to not be fazed by the big setting.

The offensive line is good at keeping everyone in the backfield clean, the defense has been great on third downs and getting off the field, and …

College Football Playoff Final Top 25 Prediction
What it means for CFP: Utah beats USC for Pac-12 title

Why Michigan Will Win

The Michigan running game should work.

It took a while to get going against Ohio State last week, and not having Corum for more than two carries appeared to be an issue. Donovan Edwards took over late and finished with 216 yards and two scores, QB JJ McCarthy hit the big plays, and the team pulled off the shocker.

Was it totally crazy that Michigan beat Ohio State? A little bit, but it was how. It came up with the home run shots the Buckeyes are used to hitting, and more than anything else, Michigan was just … Michigan.

Very, very, very consistent, all year long the Wolverines would start a little slow, let the offensive line go to work, and then the avalanche rolled over opponents time and again.

Michigan was down 20-17 at halftime, the defense held up, the O line took over, and Edwards tore off a 75-yard touchdown run, an 85-yard scoring dash, and that was that.

Purdue’s run defense is fine, but nothing amazing.

It’ll hold up early, and it’ll get in the backfield here and there, but the yards will come from the Wolverine backfield. Purdue allowed a season-high 215 rushing yards to Indiana last week, got hammered on by Iowa for over five yards per carry, and …

Championship Week Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan isn’t going to turn the ball over enough to matter. The offense has given it up only six times all year without an interception in the last five games.

Like always, the other side will look like it has Michigan in a little bit of trouble.

Purdue will throw well, it’ll get out to a lead, and there will be enough big plays on both sides of the ball to get the social media world buzzing. And then Michigan will go Michigan.

The amazing offensive line will take over, two good scoring drives will come, the defense will clamp down, and the Wolverines will pull away late on the way to the Big Ten Championship and a trip to the Fiesta Bowl as – at worst – the 2 seed in the College Football Playoff.

Why Purdue Will Win

The Indiana passing game isn’t working.

Dexter Williams is a dangerous all-around playmaker, and he proved he could lead the team to a win with a stunning 39-31 thriller at Michigan State last week, but he completed just 8-of-26 passes for 138 yards over the last two games.

Purdue has enough of a run defense to hold up.

It’s not a brick wall, but now it knows what it’s looking for when Williams takes off – the linebacking corps should keep him relatively contained.

IU beat the Spartans with 257 rushing yards and four scores – no one hasn’t come all that close to 200 rushing yards on the Boilermaker D.

That, and the Indiana defense is still the Indiana defense – it gave up close to 1,700 yards of total offense over the last three weeks.

Why Indiana Will Win

The running game really was good against Michigan State.

No, Williams didn’t do anything down the field, but the offense roared back in the second half, the defense came up big in overtime, and again, the ground attack – Williams ran for 86 yards and Shaun Shivers ran for 115.

No, the offense still doesn’t control the clock – it only had the ball for 23:27 last week – and no, the team still isn’t that great on third downs, but if it could bend without doing a lot of breaking against Michigan State, it can do that against Purdue.

The Boilermakers aren’t going to come up with too many big things in the backfield, there aren’t a ton of passes down the field in the pass-friendly offense, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Purdue will clamp down enough to get the Old Oaken Bucket for the fourth time in the last five tries.

It was a crazy collapse by Michigan State against IU. Before that, the Hoosiers had a hard time getting past 17 points, and it’s going to have a hard time coming up with explosive offensive plays to do more than that.

However, Indiana hasn’t turned it over in two weeks. It will run just enough to be okay, but Purdue will have the ball for 35 minutes and won’t crash like the Spartans did.

Throw in that this matters for the Big Ten West title – thanks to the Iowa loss to Nebraska, Purdue is in if it wins – and the extra motivation won’t hurt.
