1 big Steelers takeaway from each positional unit in preseason

On Thursday night, the Pittsburgh Steelers capped off the 2023 preseason schedule with an impressive 24-0 win over the Atlanta Falcons. With three preseason games and only one cut-down date, the Steelers had to modify how they did business and if it translates to the regular season, it’s something to stick with.

Here is our big takeaway from each positional unit from preseason.

Steelers NT Breiden Fehoko on training camp: ‘This is probably one of the best experiences of my life’

Breiden Fehoko is the latest new Steelers to gush about how great training camp at Latrobe is.

One of the biggest offseason additions for the Pittsburgh Steelers via free agency is nose tackle Breiden Fehoko. Fehoko came over from the Los Angeles Chargers and so this was his first time experiencing training camp at Latrobe.

Fehoko talked to the media on the team’s last day at Saint Vincent College and he gushed about the entire experience.

“I’m kinda sad we have to wrap this up in Latrobe but, man, it’s been such an awesome experience,” Fehoko said. “Everybody here has been just so amazing. This is probably one of the best experiences of my life.”

During training camp in Latrobe, players live together in the dorms and really use that opportunity to build those bonds you see when they get on the field together on Sunday. New Steelers cornerback Patrick Peterson also spoke very highly of his first Steelers training camp experience.

Fehoko and the rest of the Steelers take on the Buffalo Bills on Saturday in the team’s second preseason game. Fehoko figures to be an important part of the Steelers interior defensive lineman rotation thanks to his size and power.

Steelers training camp: Stock up/stock down at the end of training camp

Guys like Kenny Pickett and Dan Moore Jr. have seen their stock rise during training camp while others like Kendrick Green have struggled.

The Pittsburgh Steelers wrapped up training camp practices at Saint Vincent College on Thursday. This year’s camp has been high-energy, focused and positive in all facets. Pittsburgh has had no real issues during camp with players staying healthy and thanks to plenty of competition and exceptional effort.

But not every player has improved over the course of training camp. Some guys haven’t taken advantage of their opportunities while other players stepped up. With two preseason games left, we are going to offer up our first preseason stock report with an update coming after the Steelers play their last preseason game.

Steelers training camp: Takeaways from the Steelers final practice

Kenny Pickett and the Steelers offense had a rough day against the Steelers defense.

On Thursday, the Pittsburgh Steelers wrapped up their training camp at Saint Vincent College. The team will now take Friday off before welcoming the Buffalo Bills to Acrisure Stadium for Week Two of the NFL preseason.

All throughout training camp, Pittsburgh has gotten in good work at Latrobe and looks like a team ready to make a playoff run in 2023.

From start to finish at training camp, the Steelers offense has centered on the improvements in quarterback Kenny Pickett and his connection with wide receiver George Pickens. Defensively, the line of scrimmage has drawn all the attention with so much depth. Here are our takeaways from this final training camp practice.

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin acknowledges lighter load for Najee Harris at training camp

Najee Harris should be rested and ready for the start of the regular season.

When Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media on Thursday, he was asked about running back Najee Harris and his lighter workload during training camp and the preseason.

Tomlin downplayed it noting that it wasn’t anything “earth-breaking or ground-shattering” about it but it was a curious statement in one sense. His insinuation that lightening his workload has anything to do with age is puzzling. Harris is only 25 years old and heading into his third season. Is this where we are as a league that running backs are getting old at 25 after two seasons?

The whole paradigm of the running back position has shifted in terms of contracts and this is sure to trickle down to the field as well. This season the Steelers shouldn’t have to put quite as much pressure on Harris with Jaylen Warren there as well. Nevertheless, no one will complain if Harris is fresh at the end of the season and can be an impact player in the playoffs.

Steelers OT Dan Moore Jr. offers up hilarious analogy for playing on the line

Spencer Anderson shared a hilarious analogy via Dan Moore Jr. about playing on the line.

The Pittsburgh Steelers added offensive lineman Spencer Anderson late in the 2023 NFL draft and he’s already proven to be far more valuable than a seventh-round pick. One of the biggest things Anderson has shown is his ability to line up at multiple spots on both sides of the offense line.

If you have never played offensive line, it’s hard to describe how it feels to move from one side to the other but according to Anderson, offensive tackle Dan Moore Jr. has a great analogy.

“It’s kind of funny, he was telling me an analogy ‘It’s like wiping his butt with his left hand’,” Anderson said. “I was just thinking, I thought to myself if you break your right hand, if I break my right hand how would that be? My life would be miserable. Dan’s like ‘hats off to you’ because you know he kind of struggles with it.”

With so much uncertainty with guys like Kevin Dotson and Kendrick Green, the emergence of Anderson has been tremendous. In the team’s right preseason game, Anderson played right tackle as well as both guard spots and should get a good long look this week against the Buffalo Bills.

Steelers training camp: DT Keeanu Benton returns to practice on Wednesday

The Steelers got rookie defensive tackle Keeanu Benton back at practice on Wednesday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are back to work on Wednesday and the team got one of their great young defenders back. Rookie defensive tackle Keeanu Benton is on the field after suffering an ankle injury in the team’s first preseason game on Saturday.

The Steelers drafted Benton in the second round of the 2023 NFL draft out of the University of Wisconsin. All Benton has done since arriving is impress everyone who has had a chance to observe his work. Benton dominated the line of scrimmage last week before his injury with his mix of burst and raw power.

Benton’s quick development is really going to force the Steelers to consider him for the starting lineup. For the first time in a long time, the Steelers have a significant amount of talent at the interior defensive line.  A rotation of Benton with players like Armon Watts and Breiden Fehoko is going to be a real problem for offensive lines this season.
