Mississippi State vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Mississippi State Will Win

The Bulldogs have been relatively consistent.

They’re good at not screwing up, and the defense is tight enough to keep games from getting out of hand, but the key is their ability to keep on making enough shots to make use about every game interesting – even in the losses.

There’s a good inside presence – it doesn’t do a lot from three – and the offense is great at getting to the rim averaging 48% a game from the field. It seems obvious, but against the Texas Tech defense, the ability to simply make shots is a must. The Bulldogs can generate their own openings.

But …

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why Texas Tech Will Win

That defense.

Texas Tech is among the best in the nation defensively – the 94-91 double overtime loss to Kansas was an aberration – allowing fewer than 70 points in 12 straight games before the trip Allen Fieldhouse.

It’s a good overall formula. Play great defense, get fouled a lot, make a ton of free throws, overcome the lack of threes and high-octane firepower. Again, Mississippi State might be consistent, but it doesn’t score in bunches, especially from three.

Texas Tech would be more than happy to bog this down a bit, get up by a decent margin, and make Mississippi State try to start hitting from the outside to make it a game.

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech’s defense will be too much.

The team will have had several days to rest up and recuperate from the Kansas game, and now at home the defense should rise back up and get back to normal.

However, Texas Tech if committing too many fouls lately. Mississippi State will hang around on the free throw line, but the threes won’t be there to pull this off.

Texas Tech beat Mississippi State 34-7: AutoZone Liberty Bowl 5 Things That Matter

Final Score: Texas Tech 34, Mississippi State 7
CFN Prediction: Mississippi State 41, Texas Tech 20

Liberty Bowl 5 Thoughts
4. The Texas Tech D got the job done
3. Where was the Mississippi State defense?
2. How about giving a little love to Texas Tech?
1. Mike Leach could use a good Year 3

5. Texas Tech was … physical?

No, this wasn’t the Mississippi State of the regular season, and it certainly wasn’t the Mississippi State that everyone was hoping to see in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl – a ton more on that in a moment – but Texas Tech did its part by taking advantage of the situation.

It’s Texas Tech under Sonny Cumbie – he’s off to Louisiana Tech as the head man after this. It’s supposed to bomb away, throw deep, and do what Mississippi State is supposed to do under Mike Leach.

Instead, the ground game took over.

Texas Tech was able to throw well enough to get by, but it was the running game that took over with 260 yards to go along with the 252 through the air.
Mississippi State was tenth in the nation against the run, allowing 101 yards per game on the year.

Tajh Brooks took off for 107 yards and a score, SaRodrorick Thompson added 80 yards and a score, and the team averaged close to six yards per carry.

Mississippi State netted 54 rushing yards and averages few than three yards per run.

Mississippi State vs Texas Tech AutoZone Liberty Bowl Preview

Mike Leach going against his old team will be the narrative, but that will quickly go away once this starts and the high-octane passing attacks get going.

Now the former Red Raider head man has settled into the Mississippi State job with his all-pass-all-the-time offense doing what it’s supposed to. The Bulldogs are last in the nation in rushing, but that’s because it’s third in passing averaging 386 yards per game.

There’s nothing happening down the field – the offense has the second-lowest yard-per-completion rate in college football. It’s a ball control attack that dominates the time of possession battle, and unlike Leach’s former stops at Washington State along with Texas Tech, he has the defensive talent now to hold up on the other side.

Texas Tech is in a transitional period as the Joey McGuire era starts right after this. But before that, former Leach quarterback Sonny Cumbie will stay on before taking over the Louisiana Tech head coaching job.

The Red Raiders will run a wee bit, but this is a high-powered passing team that will try keeping up with Mississippi State throw for throw. On the flip side, though, Texas Tech will push the ball down the field more, and time of possession is meaningless.

Baylor vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Things are settled in now.

Texas Tech is already bowl eligible, interim head coach Sonny Cumbie is being kept on by new head man Joey McGuire as the offensive coordinator, and the pressure is off.

Now it’s time to turn it loose and play the role of spoiler.

The offense might have been stuffed by Oklahoma State in last week’s 23-0 loss, but it has something in freshman QB Donovan Smith, the O has shown the ability to be explosive and balanced, and the defense – for the most part – has gotten better at not breaking after doing a lot of bending.

But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Baylor Will Win

Baylor should be able to run.

The Bears lead the Big 12 in total offense thanks to a terrific combination of Abram Smith and Treston Ebner to control the game and the tempo. The offensive line has been fantastic in pass protection, it’s getting the job done for the ground game, and there likely won’t be a whole lot of guesswork in this.

Run, hold the ball for over 35 minutes, and continue to be fantastic at generating third down stops.

Texas Tech will press and needs to keep things moving, but there’s just enough of a decent Bear pass rush to make Smith have to rush.

But for the Bears, this is all about being able to run because …

What’s Going To Happen

Is QB Gerry Bohanon going to be okay to go?

The Baylor starting quarterback got knocked out of the Kansas State game with a leg injury, but freshman Blake Shapen is good enough to convert a few key third down plays, the running game should take over, and then it’ll be all about the Oklahoma – Oklahoma State showdown.

Baylor will win this, and it’ll be off to the Big 12 Championship if Oklahoma State wins. Oklahoma wins, Baylor is out, but no matter what it’ll be a terrific ten-win regular season.

Oklahoma State vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The defense continues to be dominant.

The offense took over against TCU with a stunning day from the ground attack – running for 447 yards in the 63-17 win – but it’s the defense that has the team in the mix for the Big 12 championship and a shot at the College Football Playoff.

It’s the best in the nation at getting into the backfield, which is part of the reason why it’s so good on third downs. Texas Tech’s offense has been solid all season long, and it ripped up a good Iowa State D last week, but this is something different.

Oklahoma State has the ability to control the clock, set the tempo, and if the running is close to as strong as it’s been over the last few weeks, the team should be able play this exactly like it wants to.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Yeah, Oklahoma State hasn’t really seen anything like this O yet.

It stuffed a Texas team that was just starting to leak oil, and it’s been able to stop Iowa State, and Kansas State, and Boise State, but this isn’t the Big 12 of a few years ago. No one’s playing offense in the league at a high level other than Oklahoma – at least when things are clicking.

Texas Tech has the balance with a ground attack that Oklahoma State at least has to pay attention too, but it’s the emergence of freshman Donovan Smith that cranked things up a few notches.

The 6-5, 230-pounder can run a little bit, he’s deadly accurate – connecting on 78% of his throws over his two main appearances – and he’s pushing the ball down the field enough to matter.

However …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Oklahoma State really does have the defense to give Texas Tech issues.

Smith might be a burgeoning star, but Oklahoma State should be able to generate just enough pressure to hurry him a little bit, the secondary has outstanding, and the team will run just enough to get through a trap of a game before dealing with Oklahoma in Stillwater.

This will be the working definition of survive and advance.

Iowa State vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

Shhhhh, but Iowa State is playing well and is still knee deep in the mix for a Big 12 title appearance.

The loss at West Virginia was a problem, but it came back roaring with a dominant 30-7 win over Texas. The passing attack is playing well, Breece Hall continues to be Breece Hall, and there shouldn’t be any problems moving the ball on the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech statistically has been fine against the run, but that’s mostly because most teams are throwing at will. The secondary got lit up by Oklahoma’s Caleb Williams as part of a run of 296 or more passing yards allowed in four of the last six games.

Iowa State’s offense will have some fun, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Texas Tech Will Win

As good as the Cyclone offense is, it stalls just a bit too much.

It’s not that great on third downs, the special teams have had their issues over the season, and the defense isn’t always sharp against quarterbacks in a groove.

After dominating over the first part of the season, the Iowa State secondary allowed over 300 yards in three straight games before shutting down Texas to a dead stop.

Texas Tech might be in transition to the Joey McGuire era for 2022, but it’s still Sonny Cumbie’s team for the moment. There will be lots and lots of passing.

What’s Going To Happen

Do the Red Raiders have something in freshman QB Donovan Smith?

He stepped in against Oklahoma two weeks ago and hit 17-of-22 passes for 192 yards and a touchdown with a pick, ran a little bit, and he looked like a guy the new regime might want to think about building around.

Henry Colombi is still in the mix, and Tyler Shough should be back soon from his collarbone injury, but none of those guys play D.

Iowa State’s offense will be too balanced and too consistent. The time off for the Red Raiders will help a bit, but the Cyclone experience will come through in a must-have game before dealing with Oklahoma.
