Falcons tight end Charlie Woerner to wear No. 89 this season

Falcons TE Charlie Woerner will wear uniform No. 89 this season in Atlanta

The Atlanta Falcons made arguably the biggest move of any team in free agency by signing veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins but the team’s other additions mostly flew under the radar.

The Falcons signed former 49ers tight end Charlie Woerner to a three-year, $12 million contract, filling the void left by Jonnu Smith. Woerner is someone head coach Raheem Morris and offensive coordinator Zac Robinson faced several times while they were with the Rams.

The team’s new No. 2 tight end is set to wear the No. 89 this season in Atlanta.

Woerner, 26, was drafted in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL draft out of Georgia. The fourth-year tight hasn’t missed a game since his rookie season. Woerner has caught 11 of 15 career targets for 120 receiving yards.

The Falcons released Jonnu Smith earlier in the offseason in a move that saved $6.5 million in salary cap space. Smith finished the 2023 season with 50 catches for 582 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

Other recent Falcons offseason additions, including wide receivers Darnell Mooney and Rondale Moore, were also assigned jersey numbers for the 2024 season. Mooney will wear the No. 1 while Moore will reportedly wear the No. 9.

Atlanta Falcons to sign former Georgia Bulldogs TE

The Atlanta Falcons have signed a former Georgia Bulldogs standout to pair with star tight end Kyle Pitts

The Atlanta Falcons have signed former Georgia Bulldogs tight end Charlie Woerner to a three-year, $12 million contract. Woerner is primarily a blocking tight end. He most recently helped the San Francisco 49ers win the NFC championship and make the Super Bowl.

Woerner’s signing was hardly the Falcons’ biggest splash of the day. Atlanta signed former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins to a massive four-year contract. Cousins should help improve the Atlanta offense and will get players such as Charlie Woerner more involved.

Woerner will serve as Atlanta’s top blocking tight end, while Kyle Pitts will remain the Falcons’ No. 1 receiving tight end option. The 49ers drafted Woerner in the sixth-round of the 2020 NFL draft.

It is nice to see another Georgia Bulldog come home to play for the Atlanta Falcons. Woerner has carved out a nice role for himself in the NFL despite putting up just three receptions for 32 yards in 2023. The 6-foot-5, 240-pound tight end is a product of Rabun County High School. Woerner’s signing can’t become official until March 13.

Falcons signing TE Charlie Woerner to 3-year deal, per report

#Falcons agree to terms with TE Charlie Woerner on 3-year, $12 million contract, per report

The Atlanta Falcons have agreed to terms with free-agent tight end Charlie Woerner on a three-year, $12 million contract, according to Woerner’s agent, Alex Essex. The move comes two weeks after the Falcons released secondary tight end Jonnu Smith for cap space.

Woerner, 26, fills the team’s need for a No. 2 tight end behind Kyle Pitts. The former sixth-round pick spent his first four seasons in San Francisco. Woerner is primarily a blocking specialist, recording just 11 catches for 120 yards for his career.

Thus far in free agency, the Falcons have agreed to terms with quarterback Kirk Cousins on a four-year, $180 million contract. Cornerback Jeff Okudah found a new home, signing a one-year deal with the Houston Texans.

49ers TE Charlie Woerner to sign 3-year deal with Falcons

The #49ers are down a TE with Charlie Woerner set to join the Falcons.

The 49ers tight end depth is taking a hit. Charlie Woerner’s time with the club is over after four seasons. He’s agreed to a three-year deal with the Falcons worth up to $12 million according to ESPN’s Michael Rothstein.

Woerner was a sixth-round pick of the 49ers in the 2020 draft and he became a key piece of their offense as a blocking tight end. He eventually surpassed Ross Dwelley as the No. 2 TE and played a career-high 29 percent of the offensive snaps last season.

The writing was on the wall for Woerner last season when the 49ers added TEs Cameron Latu and Brayden Willis in the draft. Had there not been a market for him it’s easy to see the 49ers bringing back such a reliable run-blocking TE. The $4 million he received annually from the Falcons probably put him out of San Francisco’s price range.

In four years Woerner played in 65 games and didn’t miss any after the two he missed as a rookie. He started seven of those contests and notched 11 catches for 120 yards.

5 TEs the Colts should target in 2024 free agency

Which TEs should the Colts target in free agency?

The tight end position for the Indianapolis Colts is a bit in flux entering free agency and the 2024 offseason.

Starter Mo Alie-Cox hasn’t proven to be a difference-maker while his run-blocking abilities seem to have plateaued. Kylen Granson is a nice H-back and receiving option to have. Jelani Woods missed the entire season due to a hamstring injury, and Andrew Ogletree’s future with the team is in serious question after being placed on the Comissioner Exempt List.

Rookie Will Mallory showed some upside as a receiver, but he didn’t factor much into the plans for the majority of the season.

Though drafting a tight end may certainly be on the docket for Indy, adding a viable veteran in free agency is an option as well. Finding a true Y tight end who can run block with consistency while adding some upside as a receiver should be the objective.

This position isn’t a major need for the Colts, but it would help the development of young quarterback Anthony Richardson.

We should note that we understand a some of these players won’t even hit the market, but we’re working under the hypothetical scenario that they become available, regardless of how slim the chances are.

Here are five free-agent tight ends the Colts should target in 2024:

49ers activate TE Charlie Woerner off PUP list

Charlier Woerner is back for the #49ers.

The 49ers on Sunday announced tight end Charlier Woerner was activated off the Physically Unable to Perform list. Woerner began camp on the PUP list after undergoing core muscle surgery, but he was on the field in team drills during Sunday’s session.

This is an important addition for the 49ers’ offense. The 2020 sixth-round pick climbed his way into the TE2 role last season behind George Kittle. He surpassed fellow backup TE Ross Dwelley by playing nearly 23 percent of the snaps. Dwelley played just under 18 percent.

San Francisco could rely more heavily on two-tight end sets this year if they wind up leaning more on the run game with quarterback Trey Lance under center. Whether the 49ers keep three or four tight ends won’t be decided until later in the preseason, but Woerner is almost certain to be one of them.

SI finds deep cut to name 49ers most underrated player

A deep cut from @ConorOrr found an underrated player even #49ers fans might not have thought of.

Finding underrated players on a team’s roster isn’t typically hard. National coverage tends to take a 30,000-foot view of the entire league that leaves stones understandably unturned.

Ask any 49ers fan who the team’s most underrated player is and there are a slew of answers that would make sense. Free safety Jimmie Ward is a good player who doesn’t get a ton of national shine. Neither does cornerback Emmanuel Moseley nor wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Sports Illustrated’s Conor Orr found a fascinating deeper cut though in his exploration of each NFC team’s most underrated player.

The name he pulled from San Francisco’s roster? Backup tight end Charlie Woerner. It’s a perplexing choice at first, but his explanation and a dive into the numbers makes it hard to refute:

Woerner wasn’t heavily utilized last year, coming in on about a quarter of the 49ers’ snaps and 75% of their special-teams snaps. But when he was in, he flashed his ability to block the scheme exceptionally well, which, for a franchise that needs movable pieces in the backfield to dictate certain looks, is essential. Someone like Woerner proves his value when Kittle and Kyle Juszczyk don’t have to put as much wear and tear on their own bodies and can be freed up as more natural matchup-creating pass catchers. Go back and rewatch his game against the Bears, in which he was used on 80% of the team’s snaps, and you’ll find an adept blocker who was a focal point on certain wide runs. On passing plays that he was on the field for, San Francisco’s passing offense was 1.1 yards better per play.

It’s taken Woerner some time to come into his own as a blocker after the 49ers picked him out of Georgia in Round 6 of the 2020 draft. His first year wasn’t exceptional, but he got better as last year went on and he eventually overtook Ross Dwelley for the TE2 job.

His athleticism hasn’t shown up in the passing game which is part of the reason he’s considered underrated. Woerner has just eight catches for 88 yards on 10 targets in 31 games. However, his ability to get wide and execute combo blocks with Juszczyk is key to the 49ers’ successful rushing attack.

He’s the in-line tight end over the left tackle on the play below:

The eye test tracks with Woerner’s improvement last season, and his uptick in playing time illustrated that as well. The numbers also point to him ranking as one of the league’s most effective blocking TEs.

Analytics site Pro Football Focus had Woerner last season ranked No. 13 in overall grade among TEs with at least 200 offensive snaps. He was No. 7 in run blocking and No. 14 as a pass blocker. His overall grade jumped 15 points from Year 1 to Year 2, and his run blocking grade skyrocketed by 25.8 points. Making that leap between his first and second seasons bodes well for Woerner’s long-term future.

It would behoove the 49ers to find another reliable receiving option in their tight end room because of what it could unlock in their passing attack. Woerner has turned himself into a key cog in the offense though over the last two years, and San Francisco is surely fine with him being underrated as long as he keeps growing into that expanded role.

Former UGA TE Charlie Woerner impressing for 49ers

Former Georgia tight end Charlie Woerner is looking to have a bigger role for the San Francisco 49ers behind star tight end George Kittle

Former Georgia Bulldogs tight end Charlie Woerner had a fairly modest rookie season for the San Francisco 49ers in 2020. Woerner finished his rookie campaign with three catches for 36 yards.

Now, Woerner is looking to have a bigger role for the 49ers behind star tight end George Kittle. In preseason action, Woerner hauled in a 34-yard pass from 49ers rookie Trey Lance.

Woerner is turning some heads in San Francisco and appears to be set to receive more playing time in passing situations. Woerner was primarily a blocker for the 49ers last season.

The San Francisco 49ers drafted Woerner with the 190th pick of the 2020 NFL draft. He appeared in 54 games in four years at Georgia and started 19 games. Woerner tallied 34 receptions for 376 yards and 1 touchdown in his collegiate career.

Woerner has been making plays throughout training camp and should make the 49ers final roster again. The NFL game seems to have slowed down for him some in Year 2.
