Rutgers vs Indiana Game Preview

Why Rutgers Will Win

So what’s going so right? How did Rutgers make a push to be the second-best team in the Big Ten?

It’s a nasty defensive team that’s as tough as anyone in the Big Ten, allowing a mere 58 points per game helped by locking up hard from three.

Indiana is playing well, but it doesn’t do anything from the outside – it makes them when it takes them, but it doesn’t take enough of them – and it can’t afford any turnovers or mistakes.

Rutgers won easily in the first meeting 63-48 by forcing 14 takeaways and dominating on the boards – it was +10 in rebounding margin. This defense and aggressiveness travels, but …

Why Indiana Will Win

Indiana is dominant at home lately.

It might not be as intense in this as it was in the sin over Purdue, but the offense has gone off at home against everyone but Wisconsin – and still won easily – and it’s got the ability to drag Rutgers out of its game.

The Scarlet Knights might live on defense, but they don’t take three pointers and don’t hit them when they try. The team struggles with its consistency from the floor, and that’s even rougher when it gets on the road.

Yeah, the defense and style should travel and be fine, but it’s not.

Rutgers was able to get by Purdue and Northwestern in low scoring fights bak in early January, but that’s it. It’s 2-5 on the year on the road, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Who’s playing with more swag lately than Indiana?

It lost to Maryland on the road when the shots weren’t falling, but the shooting will be just good enough at home. It only hit 38% from the field against the Terps, and that’s the only time it’s been under 41% since losing to Kansas in December.

Indiana will struggle, and scoring at times will be like pulling teeth, but it’ll hit from three late and Rutgers won’t.

Why Rutgers Will Win

Maryland is has gone a while without a win.

It didn’t help that it played Wisconsin, Penn State, and Ohio State over the last three weeks, but the running game has hit a wall and everything else flows from there.

Taulia Tagovailoa and the passing attack didn’t have a problem against the Buckeyes, but the the backs couldn’t get free in any of the last three games. It’s more about yards per carry with this O than bulk yards.

Maryland is 6-0 when averaging over four yards per carry and 0-5 when it doesn’t. The Rutgers defense might not be a rock, but it held six teams to under four yards per crack.

However …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Maryland Will Win

It’s not like the Rutgers ground game is doing much of anything.

It’s a bit of the same thing the other way. Maryland has problems when the other side is ripping off yards in chunks, and in general, everything is okay as long as the defense isn’t getting hit for over five yards per carry.

Rutgers has been able to run well from time to time, but it only averaged over four yards per dash three times.

The Scarlet Knight scoring pop isn’t there, the turnovers continue to be a problem, and the defense isn’t making up for it with a slew of takeaways to help the cause with just two in the last five games.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Maryland beats the mediocre and loses to the strong. The problem is that it needs lots of points to win – it has yet to come up with any sort of a grinding victory – and Rutgers doesn’t give up a ton of points except against the elite.

The Scarlet Knights allowed more than 31 points three times against Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State, but they’re 0-6 when giving up more than 21.

On the flip side, Maryland is 5-0 when scoring more than 30 and 1-5 when it doesn’t.

The Terps won’t go off, but they’ll do enough through the air to get their seventh win.

Why Penn State Will Win

The Nittany Lions are flying under the national radar as the third-best team in the Big Ten, but they’re rolling and dominating against everyone outside of Michigan and Ohio State.

Minnesota has a dangerous ground game – it didn’t matter in a 45-17 Penn State win. Indiana and Maryland can throw a little bit – Penn State made both games a scrimmage.

They’re able to use all their superstar young skill talent, the defense is getting a strong second half of the season, Rutgers doesn’t have enough on either side of the ball to handle any of it.

The way to make this interesting is to come up with a slew of takeaways, but Rutgers isn’t doing that. It generated ten turnovers in the first six games and just two in the last four.

Bowl Projections

Why Rutgers Will Win

Just how fired up will Penn State be?

Is the idea of a New Year’s Six bowl enough to get up for this? The Michigan State game to close things out at home will be the bigger one, and this is supposed to be just a speed bump.

The Rutgers defense is just good enough to keep this from getting out of hand.

It’s been okay against the run and the pass D is decent considering there’s no pass rush. For all of the struggles on offense, it was able to make things look close with a stunning balance against Michigan State in the 27-21 loss last week.

As long as the passing game can click at a 55% clip or better, it’ll keep this close for a while. However …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Penn State secondary hasn’t allowed more than 175 yards in four of the last five games, and it’s not going to get lit up by the Scarlet Knight attack.

It’ll be yet another double-digit win with a good all-around performance to potentially push the team into the College Football Playoff top ten when all is said and done, and again, it’ll be the next step to a sweet bowl game.

Rutgers hasn’t scored more than ten points in any of the last eight meetings against the Nittany Lions, and it’s not going to crank it up here.

Michigan State vs Rutgers Game Preview

Why Rutgers Will Win

Can Rutgers start taking the ball away again?

The program hasn’t been great at doing anything amazing under Greg Schiano over the last few years if it’s not forcing a bunch of takeaways. In 2000, the season opened with a stunning Scarlet Knight win thanks to three Spartan turnovers.

Start there – Rutgers has to at least win the turnover margin – and there have to be a few crazy scores coming from somewhere. The defense has been decent enough, it’s good at getting off the field, and the special teams have been fine.

But …

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Michigan State Will Win

Rutgers can’t score.

The team has yet to get past 24 against any FBS team and the 24-17 win over Indiana was like an explosion considering it’s been a grind to get past 13 points.

That’s a problem, and now the run defense is starting to crash. Playing Minnesota and Michigan had something to do with that, and Michigan State isn’t running well, but this is when the ground game needs to grind.

It’s the first time in a month the Spartans get to go against a mediocre run D, and they should be able to get past four yards per carry for the first time since the loss to Maryland in early October.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

With wins over Wisconsin and Illinois over the last three weeks, the Spartans are now have a real shot to save the season with a bowl bid. Win this, beat Indiana, and there’s something positive to build on going into the regular season finale against Penn State.

They’re not doing anything easy, but they’re still playing hard, they’re playing better, and they’ll pull this off after a rough first half.

Rutgers will go up early and stall.

Michigan vs Rutgers Game Preview

Why Michigan Will Win

Just keep the machine going.

Michigan hasn’t been anything too spectacular, but that’s not its style. It’s going to pound away with the offensive line and the running game, it all starts to break through in the second half, and the defense holds up and takes care of the rest.

It might make life a little bit nervous for the fans, but eventually the dam breaks.

There aren’t going to be enough turnovers to give Rutgers any help – just five giveaways all year – the defense should stuff everything on third downs, and …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Rutgers Will Win

Can Rutgers finally come up with one of those games when the defense rises up and rocks?

It’s going to take a ton of takeaways – and a sloppy effort from Michigan – to make this happen, and the defense has showed at times it can force enough mistakes to at least keep things close.

The defense is getting the job done. It’s only allowing 295 yards per game overall, the run D is among the best in the country, and the special teams are just strong enough to tilt the field to the other side. However …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, overall the Rutgers defense is getting the job done, but it just got run over by Minnesota to 253 yards and four scores.

Yeah, the style slows the game down and keeps most games from getting too far out of hand, but the offense isn’t there to take advantage of the opportunities.

As always, Michigan won’t be able to pull away in the first half and the base will feel a tad worried, and it’ll all break through in the second half.
