Florida Atlantic vs UAB Game Preview

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

How are the Owls doing this? How are they on a run of 20 straight wins?  It helps that they’re really, really deep.

No one in college basketball gets more points off the bench. The threes are consistently there, the offensive punch keeps on coming, and the defense is doing a solid job of generating turnovers and forcing mistakes.

Combine all of that with a relentless ability to get to the glass on both ends, and it’s all working.

But …

Why UAB Will Win

It almost had them.

UAB lost to Florida Atlantic 88-86 in the first meeting a month ago – it was as close as anyone has been able to get to disrupt the run.

The scoring D has been hit or miss, but no one in Conference USA does a better job on the glass – it got whomped in the first meeting in rebounding margin, but it’s normally among the best in the country – and no one in the league scores more.

Florida Atlantic is happy to get up and down the floor, but UAB is better in transition and stronger at generating fast break points.

But it’s this simple …

What’s Going To Happen

UAB has got to be on from three.

This will be a high-powered firefight with a whole lot of scoring runs and swings, but UAB has to be able to keep up from the outside.

It’s 11-2 when hitting 36% or better from three, and 4-6 when it doesn’t. Not making enough threes were the problem in the two home losses.

However, UAB hit half to its threes in the first meeting and it wasn’t quite enough. There was one other big difference, though.

Florida Atlantic had its second-best free throw shooting day of the year. The Blazers had an uncharacteristically mediocre day on the line.

It’ll be close late, and UAB will be better shooting free throws this time around.

UAB vs Miami University HomeTown Lenders Bahamas Bowl 5 Things To Know

It’s one of the funkier bowl games with the pressure of being first to get rolling. The matchup was determined weeks ago – with both teams needing time to prep everything for the trip to the Bahamas. The winner finishes with a winning season, the loser doesn’t. For either of the two programs that were supposed to be in the mix for their respective conference championships and weren’t, 7-6 wouldn’t be a bad way to finish.

It’s just the sixth bowl appearance for UAB, not counting the 2020 Gasparilla Bowl that got canceled. It’s 2-3 in bowls after winning the 2021 Independence last year over BYU.

Miami University is 8-5 in bowls and 1-2 under head coach Chuck Martin, winning the Frisco Football Classic last season over North Texas 27-14. However, seven of first 13 bowl appearances came in 1986 or earlier with the Martin era representing four of the programs bowl games since 2010.

The Bahamas Bowl has generally been solid. Two times it’s been among the best bowls of the season, wasn’t bad three times, got canceled in 2020, and was totally miserable the two of the three game the MAC team won incising Ohio’s 41-6 win over UAB in 2017.

UAB doesn’t have any key transfers yet, but the coaching situation is in a holding pattern with Trent Dilfer set to take over once this is done. Bryan Vincent will remain on for the bowl. Miami University QB Brett Gabbert was in the transfer portal and then he wasn’t, but he’s been hurt most of the year. Aveon Smith has been the main man outside of a few games in the middle of the season.

HomeTown Lenders Bahamas Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

Why Miami University Will Win The HomeTown Lenders Bahamas Bowl

The RedHawks come into this playing well, winning three of their last four games including a clutch 18-17 performance over Ball State to get bowl eligible.

They don’t have a high-powered attack, but they’re good for around 200 passing yards per game without a slew of big mistakes – just one interception in the last six games – and they’re at their best when they get the ground game rolling.

They lost to Buffalo when the rushing attack rocked, but that’s been it for being on the wrong side when they’re powering away. Led by QB Aveon Smith and a rotation of young backs, Miami is 5-1 when running for 120 yards or more and 1-5 when they don’t.

The UAB run defense has been a disappointment finishing 94th in the nation partly because the line doesn’t do much of anything to get in the backfield. The team is 2-5 when allowing more than 140 yards and only allowed fewer than 120 four times.

CFN Experts Picks: Bowls December 16th-19th

Why UAB Will Win The HomeTown Lenders Bahamas Bowl

The Miami offense isn’t going to crank up 45 points with any sort of high-flying craziness. It’s about controlling the clock, running well, and not making any big mistakes. The problem with that is the inability to keep things moving – they’re awful on third downs.

UAB has the ability to crank up the points fast and turn the lights out. It might be inconsistent, but it was able to keep up in the 44-38 loss to UTSA, hung up 41 on North Texas, and overall stepped it up over the final month when it needed to go on a run to get bowl eligible.

Yes, Miami can run, but UAB has the star of the show in the nation’s leading rusher, DeWayne McBride. He averaged 155 yards per game, ran for a 1,713 yards despite missing the opener and getting stuffed by LSU.

Miami’s run defense led the MAC and should be able to hold up a bit, but …

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

UAB vs Louisiana Tech What’s Going To Happen

UAB has had a rough season with a disastrous second half run going 1-5, but all can be fine with one more win and bowl eligibility.

It’ll get it against a Louisiana Tech team that’s not able to come up with enough consistency on defense and is struggling to get the O going.

The Bulldogs do okay when they take the ball away a bunch of times – they’re 3-1 when coming up with three turnovers or more – but UAB has only given it up multiple times once in the last seven games.

Here’s the concern, though – UAB isn’t at home.

It’s 5-1 at home and 0-5 on the road – and it’s not like it played a slew of killers other than LSU. Louisiana Tech is 0-7 on the road but 3-1 at home. The passing game will click to make this fun, but DeWayne McBride and the ground game will control this throughout.

Why UAB Will Win

UAB has enough good parts to be really, really annoying.

The offense has the nation’s leading rusher – DeWayne McBride has rushed for 120 yards or more in every game with 17 touchdowns – and holds on to the ball for a long, long time.

This is a deliberate attack that’s great on third downs – McBride has a lot to do with that – the defense is the best in Conference USA, and the secondary makes enough plays to make LSU work.

The SEC West champ has bigger things on the brain.

It has a date with Texas A&M next week before dealing with Georgia in the SEC Championship. There’s even a shot at the College Football Playoff if everything goes right.

It might not be fully focused on this, but …

Bowl Projections

Why LSU Will Win

This is the first time all year UAB will face a Power Five program, but there’s a bigger issue.

UAB has to play on the road.

This has been a dominant team inside Protective Stadium. The offense turned it over just four times in the six home games, the defense has been a takeaway machine, and the team plays at a whole other level going 5-1.

On the road the Blazers are 0-4, the D only has three takeaways, the offense turned it over ten times, and the passing game has been an inconsistent dud.

That’s before having to deal with Death Valley at night.

Obviously being on the road matters, but in this it’ll be about trying to hold up against an LSU offense that’s going to try working the kinks back out – yes, this late in the season – after struggling so much against Arkansas.

The passing game has to get going again, the two turnovers weren’t good, and the production needs to be there after the rocky win.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

UAB isn’t just a paycheck game, but LSU is paying for the tune-up.

It really is freakish just how much better UAB plays at home, but it’ll be plucky enough to make the Tigers work a little bit.

Yeah, it’s 0-4 on the road, but no one – including the Liberty team that just beat Arkansas or the WKU team with one of the nation’s best passing games – has been able to win easily.

LSU won’t be any real danger, but it”ll have to pick up the energy in the third quarter to get comfortable.

North Texas vs UAB Game Preview

Why North Texas Will Win

Can North Texas really play for the Conference USA championship? It’s on the doorstep of doing that after coming up with two straight great performances in wins over WKU and FIU.

The passing game has gone off. Austin Aune has been unstoppable, the running game is averaging over five yards per carry on the year, and UAB has to prove it can keep up.

All of a sudden, the Blazers have stalled with three straight losses, but …

10 Best Picks Against The Spread

Why UAB Will Win

This might be fixable.

It’s going to take a big pivot to get back in the mix for a bowl game, but it can start with the running game that’s been rolling over everyone. D

DeWayne McBride – the nation’s leading rusher – continues to hammer away for a ground game that’s going to blow past 200 yards, and last week the passing attack showed it could hold up its end of the bargain with Jacob Zeno throwing for 332 yards.

UAB has to keep up in the pace in the shootout, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Can UAB’s defense hold up? It’s not coming up with enough key stops, the offense isn’t able to control game like it should, and the secondary isn’t holding up in the red zone likes it needs to.

The North Texas offense will be great, but UAB is a totally different animal at home.

UAB vs Florida Atlantic Game Preview

Why UAB Will Win

The running game has been crushing.

The Blazers might not have thrown well enough in the 20-17 loss at WKU last week, but the ground attack still averaged close to six yards per carry and managed to pound away throughout. The four turnovers were a problem, but that’s not normal for the UAB O.

Florida Atlantic has been hit or miss defensively, but when the run defense is struggling there’s a huge problem. It got destroyed by North Texas and ripped up by UTEP – both losses – and the three wins this year came when holding running games to under 70 yards.

UAB won’t be held to under 200.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

The Owls are a different team at home.

They lost to UCF, but everything else worked find in the other three wins, even if they were close.

They have enough of a running game to matter, but to pull this off N’Kosi Perry has to be the best player on the field. When the quarterback is hitting his midrange throws this is a different attack.

On the other side, the defense has to sell out against the run. UAB is great at bombing away against defenses that do that, but the Owl D has to take that shot because …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The UAB defense is too good and the running game is great.

However, UAB is a very, very different team away from home, and that starts with turnovers.

0-3 away from Protective Stadium and 4-0 on it, it’s almost all about the mistakes. The Blazers have given it up ten times in the three road games and just twice in the four home dates.

Florida Atlantic will run well enough to go along with the three takeaways needed to pull off a tough, tight battle.

UAB vs WKU Game Preview

Why UAB Will Win

Steady, UAB just keeps rolling along with a passing attack that’s going to be good, will throw well into the 200 yard range, and with a ground game that can balance things out a bit.

There aren’t any big problems with turnovers – the team is 0-2 when giving it up multiple times and 4-0 when it doesn’t – and WKU’s defense doesn’t do enough to force a ton of mistakes.

On the other side, the Hilltoppers are good for at least two giveaways and UAB will happily force that to happen – the Blazers are +5 in turnover margin.

The pass defense hasn’t been destroyed. WKU will throw and keep throwing, but UAB has yet to give up more than 215 passing yards this season. That’s partly because …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why WKU Will Win

UAB hasn’t faced anyone who can really bomb away other than Georgia Southern.

WKU is going to throw it 50 times, rely on a run defense that doesn’t get gouged, and hope it all works from there.

As good as UAB is, it hasn’t faced a Power Five team, the schedule has hardly been a killer, and it’s 0-2 away from home. It has an okay pass rush, but it’s hardly dominant. The passing game is consistent, but it’s not the type that’s going keep up in a shootout.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Hilltoppers rise up at home after a strong road win over Middle Tennessee?

Can UAB prove it can get the job done away from home?

WKU will pull out a fun win with a whole lot of passing and help from the run defense that will keep the Blazers in check.

UAB has rushed for close to 600 yards over the last two weeks and for 230 yards or more in every game but the loss to Rice. WKU will give up 200 yards, but it’ll throw for 300.

Charlotte vs UAB Game Preview

Why Charlotte Will Win

What can Charlotte do to turn its season around?

The offense has been fun. The passing attack has been terrific with QB Chris Reynolds back and rolling. He threw for over 400 yards and five scores in the win over Georgia State, and two weeks ago he threw for four scores and 347 yards in the loss to UTEP.

UAB’s pass defense has been solid, but it hasn’t dealt with a slew of top passing attacks. As long as Reynolds gets time he’ll go off, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why UAB Will Win

Reynolds might have to hurry a bit against a good UAB pass rush. That’s not the problem – the yards will be there.

The 49er defense is the second-worst in college football mostly because the run defense isn’t slowing anyone down.

It’s not just that the front is getting gouged for big dashes; it’s getting pounded on. It’s allowing 5.8 yards per carry and giving up over 200 yards in five of the six games and 193 to Maryland in the other one.

UAB’s running game is kicking in huge, ripping through Middle Tennessee for over 300 and getting to 230 yards in four of the five games, so …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Be stunned if UAB doesn’t have 225 rushing yards getting off the bus.

It’s going to start running and keep running until Charlotte proves it can come up with a stop.

The 49ers will get enough passing yards to make the Blazers keep pressing, and that won’t be a problem.

Middle Tennessee at UAB Game Preview

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

Takeaways. Everyone knows the Middle Tennessee defense takes the ball away, and everyone still gives up mistakes.

The Blue Raiders have 11 takeaways over the last four games – the three against Miami were the big reason for the upset – but now they’re more than that. The passing game is rocking, too.

QB Chase Cunningham has been on fire, the running game isn’t bad, and …

The takeaways. UAB is 0-2 when turning if over multiple times, and 2-0 when it doesn’t.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why UAB Will Win

Can UAB get its own passing game going?

The Blue Raiders might take the ball away in bunches, but they also give up a ton of passing yards. They allowed 423 to UTSA’s Frank Harris, allowed over 300 to Miami and now it’s up to Dylan Hopkins to get his turn.

The Blazers don’t throw picks, the defense leads Conference USA in yards allowed, and the secondary is the best in the conference so far, too.

And …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

UAB also knows how to come up with takeaways. It applies the other way with seven in the wins over Alabama A&M and Georgia Southern and two in the losses.

Here’s the problem – UAB hasn’t beaten anyone that great. The win over Georgia Southern was nice, but losing to Liberty and Rice?

MIddle Tennessee has won on the road – at Miami, at Colorado State – it knows how to come up with the big plays on defense, and …

UAB at home is a different team. The Blazer D will outplay the Blue Raider version.
