FIU Golden Panthers Preview 2022

It was supposed to work better than that.

FIU had the coach in Butch Davis who knew Miami, there was just enough talent to make a splash, and the program was supposed to take steps forward and become a bigger factor. Instead, the 2021 season opened with a win over Long Island, and that was it.

The offense was a total disaster as the season went on, the defense never showed up, and the turnaround season led to a regime change and a total reboot.

The 2019 team shocked Miami late in the season on the way to a bowl game. Since then it’s 1-17 with just that lone victory over the Sharks.

Enter Mike MacIntyre and with him comes hope.

He did the absolute impossible and made San Jose State great going from 1-12 when he first took over in 2010 to 10-2 two years later.

He did the almost impossible and pushed Colorado through three tough seasons to 10-4 in 2016. He wasn’t able to sustain the success, but the Buffs were hardly awful in the two years before he was canned.

Now he has another tough mountain to climb. It’s not going to happen overnight, but he’s a good defensive coach who should at least make the Golden Panthers more competitive.

FIU Golden Panthers Preview 2022: Offense

The FIU offense couldn’t move the chains, the running game didn’t exist, and the offensive line didn’t give anyone time to work. New offensive coordinator David Yost knows how to get a passing game going and he knows how to coach up quarterbacks, coming off a few years at Texas Tech and known for his time as a star assistant at Missouri under Gary Pinkel.

This is going to take a bit. FIU is starting from scratch, but the up-tempo attack will be fun, and …

There are new parts of the passing game that should work. Gunnar Holmberg isn’t going to be Aaron Rodgers, but he’s a veteran quarterback from Duke who should settle the position … maybe. Haden Carlson and Grayson James are getting every shot at the gig.

Leading receiver Tyrese Chambers is back along with former USF transfer Randall St. Felix to go along with Sharod Johnson (Syracuse) and Jacolby Hewitt (Indiana). The passing attack that averaged 265 yards per game should keep going. But …

The offensive front has to be night-and-day better. Two starters are back, and there’s size and a little help from the transfer portal, but this group was a major problem with nothing happening in pass protection and little help for the ground game.

The backs are okay, but they need room. Lexington Joseph averaged 4.8 yards per carry – the backs should average close to five yards per pop. Now the line has to keep the quarterback from getting hit to keep that rushing average from nosediving.

FIU Golden Panthers Preview 2022: Defense

New defensive coordinator Jovan Dewitt has been around the block – he was a linebackers coach at Nebraska and North Carolina over the last few years – and he knows the south Florida area. Job One is to generate pressure for a D that was the third-worst in college football overall, didn’t force takeaways, and allowed close to 40 points per game.

There are a few okay parts coming back, and it starts with the defensive front. There’s not a lot of size, but all things considered, there’s a little bit of experience to play around with. Someone has to help 6-1, 263-pound end Davon Strickland make more plays behind the line, and there has to be a good rotation to hold up inside.

The secondary didn’t do a whole bunch, but it had good corners in Richard and Rishard Dames. They’re gone, but the young safeties are back starting with Jamal Potts and Demetrius Hill bringing good size and a little bit of experience.

Gaethan Bernadel made 44 tackles from one linebacker spot, but this is one of the team’s thinnest areas considering the D would like to work around a 4-3 as much as possible.

It’s a new world for Conference USA with the loss of Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss over to the Sun Belt. There are still plenty of good teams still around, but the league is hanging on through the expansion process.

Can 2021’s star teams keep it all going? UTSA and WKU won’t be quite as good, UAB should be strong, and UTEP might just keep on stunning.

If Florida Atlantic can rise up after a down season, and if North Texas and Middle Tennessee can be bowl-worthy again, it should be a fun run.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

Marshall vs FIU Game Preview, C-USA Conference Tournament

Why FIU Will Win

The Golden Panthers are going to keep on shooting.

They might have issues turning the ball over, and the defense is too often a rumor, but they’re going to keep on firing from three.

They’re not great at hitting their shots, but they keep taking them to generate threes in bulk. Best of all, they’ve been able to beat Marshall twice even though they weren’t rolling from the outside.

On the flip side, Marshall can’t hit a thing from the outside – even though it takes a ton of threes – and it doesn’t do enough from the free throw line and from the field to make up for it.

But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Marshall Will Win

FIU doesn’t do anything from the free throw line, either.

It turns the ball over in bulk which doesn’t help an already suspect defense. No, Marshall doesn’t make threes – hitting just 30% – but it’ll keep bombing away to at least match FIU in outside shots. It could be a matter of quantity over quality here.

FIU has lost four straight with the offense flailing, there’s no consistency whatever, and …

Marshall vs FIU: What’s Going To Happen

FIU is just a bit better from three than Marshall is.

Neither team is anything special, but the Herd are having a hard time getting to 40% from the field, much less from three. FIU will come up with a few more free throws and few extra threes.

It won’t be easy, but it’ll be three in a row in the series against Marshall.

Southern Miss vs FIU Game Preview

Why FIU Will Win

Southern Miss is one of the few teams that has a harder time moving the chains than FIU does.

The Golden Eagles pulled off a win over Louisiana Tech for the first victory of the year over an FCS team, but the five takeaways had a whole lot to do with that.

The USM offensive front has a nightmare of a time keeping teams out of the backfield, the offense is the second-worst in America averaging just 250 yards a game, and turnover as a huge issue.

The O has given it up 28 times on the year – the second most in America – with 13 in the last four games. But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Southern Miss Will Win

Southern Miss is taking the ball away.

The defense hasn’t been bad overall. It’s okay against the run, it’s second in Conference USA against the pass, and considering there’s little to no pass rush, it’s not the problem.

Again, the five takeaways against Louisiana Tech were the difference in the win last week, and the D has 12 takeaways in the last four games.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

FIU doesn’t do anything to generate takeaways.

Even with a good passing game that hits a slew of shots down the field, the Golden Panthers have been obliterated in each of the last four games and haven’t come within 11 points of anyone since the 31-27 loss at Central Michigan.

The woeful and painfully disappointing FIU season comes to a merciful end.

North Texas vs FIU Game Preview

Why North Texas Will Win

Where did this come from?

All of a sudden, North Texas went from being mired in a lost season to being two wins away from a bowl appearance. The regular season finale is against UTSA – there might be a hard stop to the fun next week – but it can make this interesting by getting though the free space game.

FIU is a total mess. Head coach Butch Davis is done, interim head man Ron Cooper has to try piecing things together for a team on a nine-game losing streak. The last six losses have all been ugly blowouts, there are too many turnovers, nothing is happening on defense, and the scoring pop from earlier in the year has gone away.

North Texas has cranked up the offensive efficiency, the ground game should be able to go off, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why FIU Will Win

Maybe the change in coaches and the drama could serve as something of a positive.

It’s been one of the strange phenomenons over the season. With the distractions and pressure gone, teams have been playing well in the first game after losing the head coach.

There are some positives with FIU. The passing game can push the ball down the field, the North Texas defense is hardly a rock, and if the O can chill on the turnovers after giving it up eight times in the last three games, this might be close.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

FIU will play a little bit better, but it won’t quite be enough.

There’s a reasonable chance FIU can pull off a win next week against a miserable Southern Miss team, and this will be a step towards that. The Mean Green offense will be too solid and too productive in the second half, but FIU will have its chances to make this interesting.

FIU vs Middle Tennessee Game Preview

Why FIU Will Win

The offense continues to be fun.

It’s not consistent, and it doesn’t move the chains well enough, but there’s a passing game Middle Tennessee has to worry about. The Golden Panthers have thrown for 260 yards or more in five of the last six games, and they’re about to push for 300 yards because they’ll have to.

They bomb deep – they’re averaging close to 17 yards per throw – and Middle Tennessee doesn’t have the pop with a new quarterback after losing Chase Cunningham a few weeks ago.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

Just win the turnover battle.

The Blue Raiders couldn’t force enough mistakes to matter against WKU in a 48-21 loss, and it was the opposite. They lead the nation with 25 takeaways, but they didn’t come up with any last week and they turned it over seven times.
Fortunately, they’re going against a defense that never, ever takes the ball away – FIU has only come up with six takeaways.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Can this be when FIU finally gets its first win over an FBS team?

Middle Tennessee has turned the ball over 11 times in the last two games, but the D was able to make up for it in the win over Southern Miss. In this, run, run, run, don’t take any deep shots, and assume the pass defense will come up with enough takeaways to matter.

Old Dominion vs FIU Game Preview

Why Old Dominion Will Win

The Monarchs are overcoming issues with enough takeaways to get by.

The defense has been good enough to keep the team in games – there was close loss after close loss before finally getting over the hump with a win over Louisiana Tech.

The run defense has been outstanding, and it should be able to stuff FIU to a dead stop. The Golden Panther offense has failed to hit 300 yards in each of the last two games as the season keeps getting worse.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why FIU Will Win

FIU has to overcome its problems with lots and lots of takeaways.

Old Dominion has turned the ball over two or more times in five straight games and has yet to win the turnover margin. There’s a whole lot going right as the team is starting to play better, but it all goes away if it makes a slew of mistakes.

FIU doesn’t generate turnovers with just four takeaways, but the defense can get behind the line and there are just enough stops against the mediocre attacks to potentially be okay.

The passing game will push the ball down the field, Old Dominion has no downfield attack, and the hope has to be for the O to be more explosive.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Can Old Dominion make it two in a row? It’s playing a team its own size without the defensive toughness to hold up. More importantly in this, FIU doesn’t take the ball away enough to matter.

It’ll be close, it’ll be entertaining, and it’ll come down to Old Dominion being better than third downs and in the final moments.

FIU vs Marshall Game Preview

Why FIU Will Win

The passing game continues to be fun.

The wins aren’t there, and the defense is letting the team down, but the Golden Panthers have the ability to keep up and bomb away against just about anyone with one of the best downfield passing attacks in college football.

FIU will throw for over 300 yards, and then it comes down to whether or not Marshall goes Marshall and turns the ball over enough to matter. The Thundering Herd have given it up multiple times in every game but one with ten giveaways over the last three games. But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Marshall Will Win

This FIU team just doesn’t do a thing on defense.

It might throw for a ton of yards, but it gives them up just as fast, allowing 382 passing yards or more in four of the last five games.

It’s the second-worst pass defense in the country, there’s no ball control with the O struggling in the time of possession battle, and when it comes to those pesky Thundering Herd giveaways, the FIU D has only come up with four turnovers.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Marshall has to do everything possible to not turn the ball over four times. It can get away with its normal two, but the only way FIU pulls this off is if there’s a total meltdown like the Herd’s loss to Middle Tennessee.

Expect over 600 passing yards between the two teams and a lot of offensive fun, but Marshall will come up with a few stops, and FIU won’t.

WKU vs FIU Game Preview

Why WKU Will Win

The passing game will be amazing.

QB Bailey Zappe and the Hilltoppers attack won’t have any problem ripping through a shockingly awful FIU secondary that allowed an average of over 400 yards per game over a three-game stretch before allowing 199 yards against Charlotte.

Third in the nation in total offense, the Hilltoppers are exploding or over 500 yards on a consistent basis, and they should let it rip without any worry against a D that’s dead last in the nation in turnovers forced.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why FIU Will Win

FIU can wing it around, too.

There might not be a whole lot of success overall, but former Maryland QB Max Bortenschlager has been fantastic with 14 touchdown passes – two or more in every game – five picks, and he’s coming off a 466-yard day against Charlotte.

WKU has several outstanding parts on defense, but it’s having a tough time holding up. It’s allowing close to 500 yards per game with a secondary that’s allowing 327 yards or more in each of the last four games.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

This is going to be fun.

Both teams are going to throw and throw some more, but WKU does it better.  The pass rush, though, hasn’t shown up this season like it was supposed to, but it will this week against a Golden Panther O line that’s having problems.

The Hilltoppers lines will be stronger.
