Duluth Trading Cure Bowl What Happened

UTSA got up 12-0 on a Troy snap out of the end zone for a safety, and helped by a two-yard Frank Harris touchdown pass to Zaire Franklin. That was it for the Roadrunner scores as mistake after mistake proved costly.

Troy scored 19 unanswered points, highlighted by a Gunnar Watson 12-yard touchdown pass to RaJae Johnson to capitalize off a Keyshawn Swanson pick near the end zone to stall a UTSA drive.

– UTSA is going to be kicking itself for this one. It had a 12-0, but turned it over five times, got hit with nine penalties – one big one that kept a drive alive – and allowed a fake punt for a first down, and yet it had chance after chance to take over. UTSA’s offense suffered drop after drop – not helped by some questionable play calls – along with all of those mistakes. However …

Give the Trojans credit. The offense didn’t work all that well, the defense bent a bit too much, and they couldn’t put the game away despite all the UTSA errors. The defense came up with stop after stop, overcame its own mistakes, and got the thrilling bowl win.

2022-2023 Bowl Schedule, Predictions

Duluth Trading Cure Bowl Player of the Game

KJ Robertson, LB Troy
Several Troy defensive players could’ve been here – Carlton Martial led the team with 14 tackles and CB Reddy Steward had a huge day. Robertson did a little of everything with 9 tackles with an interception.

CFN Bowl Expert Picks: Dec 20-27

Duluth Trading Cure Bowl Fun Stats

– Total offense: UTSA 345 – Troy 153

– Penalties: UTSA 9 for 105 yards, Troy 2 for 22 yards

– Turnovers: UTSA 5, Troy 2

Duluth Trading Cure Bowl What It All Means

Troy closed out one of its best – if not the strongest – seasons in the program’s history, and it was the strongest in the 22 years since moving up to the FCS world. Not bad for Jon Sumrall’s first season. Along with a Sun Belt Championship and now a Cure Bowl win, the 12 wins push pass the 11-2 2017 season. This also makes it five straight bowl wins going back to 2010.

UTSA was fantastic all season long, and it had this game in its hands, but couldn’t come through. It was still a fantastic season with a Conference USA title, but the program is still winless in bowl games – 0-4 losing the last three years – and it wasn’t able to match last year’s 12-2 season.

UTSA vs Troy Duluth Trading Cure Bowl 5 Things To Know

Duluth Trading Cure Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

None of the College Football Playoff games match up conference champions. This is the only bowl of the season that does. It’s about as close as possible to being a representative of a big regular season game with two 11-win teams that come in without any big transfers or head coaching changes – but UTSA lost offensive coordinator Will Stein to Oregon. It’s the Sun Belt vs Conference USA for bragging rights in what should be one of the best bowls of the bunch.

It’s the first bowl under Troy head coach Jon Sumrall, and he has to keep the post-season run going – the program has been outlasting in bowls lately. Troy was 1-3 in its first four, but since 2010 it won its last four. It hasn’t been to one since beating Buffalo in the 2018 Dollar General. On the flip side …

UTSA is still searching for its first bowl win. It’s 0-3 since first getting to the 2016 New Mexico Bowl – losing to New Mexico – and it lost the last two seasons under head coach Jeff Traylor. Last year it dropped the Frisco Bowl to San Diego State 38-24.

The Cure has been a bit of a catch-all bowl when it comes to affiliations and matchups over its seven-year-run, and that’s a good thing – the games have been fantastic lately, The first four were all decided by double-digits, but they weren’t awful. The last three have all been close, the 37-34 Liberty overtime win over Coastal Carolina might have been the best bowl of 2020, and last year the Chanticleers beat Northern Illinois in a 47-41 thriller.

The Sun Belt was all about the addition of new programs and the big splashy start with a slew of upset wins. Troy rose above the pack and rolled Coastal Carolina for the Sun Belt title. It’s coming in on a ten-game winning streak, just like UTSA.

The Roadrunners started 1-2 – coming this close to beating Houston in the opener – but they dominated the rest of the way with  a high-powered offensive style scoring 30 or more since losing 41-20 to Texas.

CFN Experts Picks: Bowls December 16th-19th

Why UTSA Will Win The Duluth Trading Cure Bowl

Even with the changes at offensive coordinator, the show goes on thanks to veteran Frank Harris. One of the best all-around quarterbacks in the country, he hits 71% of his passes, doesn’t make a ton of mistakes, and he’s a dangerous runner with 588 yards and nine scores – he keeps the chains moving. On the flip side, the Troy O has big problems on third downs.

Relentless, UTSA doesn’t miss on its chances to take advantage of good drives, and it’s balanced enough to hit the great Troy defense in a variety of ways. The ground game hit 200 yards in five of its last six games, the passing attack threw for 220 or more in every game but a blowout over Rice, and Troy has to deal with all of it.

The Trojans might have a good enough offense to have their moments, but they can’t get behind. Not only do they have to keep up, but they have to prepare for a flurry – UTSA can score in a hurry when down.

Why Troy Will Win The Duluth Trading Cure Bowl

The defense stepped up big when it had to.

Granted, it lost to Appalachian State early in the season on a deep ball – sort of a Hail Mary, but not quite – in the last loss of the season, but it came back to shut down Marshall, stopped South Alabama in a huge 10-6 win on the road, and held down just about everyone else. It finished the season eighth in the nation in scoring defense helped by a great pass rush that should keep the pressure on Harris.

The offense wasn’t just along for the ride, but it wasn’t all that consistent. There’s a passing game good enough to push past 300 yards if needed. the ground game over five yards per carry in the finishing three games, and now it gets a UTSA defense that’s not totally awful, but doesn’t generate any pass rush.

Trojan QB Gunnar Watson threw for 318 yards in the Sun Belt title game against Coastal Carolina on just 12 completions – he’ll connect on a few big plays.

Why North Texas Will Win

The Mean Green came close the first time around.

They went to UTSA, got the passing game going, and had their chances in the 31-27 loss. As long as they can keep bombing away, they’ll have a shot.

Consistency has been a bit of an issue, but no one in Conference USA gets more big plays out of the passing game partly because no on in the conference is better in pass protection. Giving QB Austin Aune time to work won’t be a problem – UTSA doesn’t have much of a pass rush to worry about.

Aune struggled with his accuracy, but he threw for 325 yards and three scores in the first meeting. He’ll come up with close to 300 yards in this to keep up the pressure.

However …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why UTSA Will Win

North Texas might have been strong the first time around, but UTSA did win.

Frank Harris threw a pick, but the offense was well balanced, there weren’t any big problems moving the chains, and it should all work again against a North Texas defense that allows over 450 yards per game.

On a nine-game winning streak, the defending Conference USA champion has the consistency North Texas doesn’t. It has the ability to run or 250 yards, bomb away when needed, and keep things moving against a defense that’s awful at coming up with third down stops.

The Mean Green are 5-0 when allowing fewer than 150 rushing yards and 2-5 when giving up more. UTEP is 7-0 when hitting the 150 mark.

Championship Week Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

North Texas isn’t going to make this easy.

Just when it seems like UTSA has things under control, the Mean Green big plays will connect to keep the pressure on.

The UTSA offense will be steady throughout, it’ll control the clock late, and the program will make it two Conference USA championships in a row in a fun back-and-forth shootout.

UTEP vs UTSA What’s Going To Happen

UTSA is off to the Conference USA Championship, and UTSA is trying to keep its season going. The Miners have to win this for a bowl game, but it’s going to be a rough ride.

They’re great when they get the ground game going – they’re 4-0 when running for 199 yards or more and 1-6 when they don’t – but they’re not going to get it going against the UTSA D.

The Roadrunners will have a few shaky moments against the UTEP ground attack, but they’ll make up for it with a quick scoring drive when needed. The UTEP defense won’t be able to handle the accurate and consistent UTSA passing attack

UTEP has to hit 30 points to have a shot, and it’s not going to happen.

Louisiana Tech vs UTSA Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

The offense will be more than happy to make this a shootout with the Roadrunners.

The offense might not be consistent, but it’s good for 300 yards through the air against anyone who wants to party.

The Sonny Cumbie offense is cranking up well over 400 yards on a regular basis, the defense is forcing takeaways by the bunches with three or more in three of the last five games, and …

10 Best Picks Against The Spread

Why UTSA Will Win

UTSA does shootouts better.

The offense will give it away a few times, but not enough to matter. The balance will be the difference to overcome the mistakes.

Louisiana Tech can run a little bit, but it can’t get to 200 yards like UTSA can.

The Bulldog run defense is a disaster allowing 279 yards or more four times – losing all four games – and UTSA is more than happy to get everything working on the ground to go along with all Frank Harris and the passing attack can do.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

You know those tough defensive struggles with both teams holding up in a tense-filled battle that comes down to one or two big offensive plays? Yeah, that’s not going to be this.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show as these two rumble up and down the field. UTSA will come up with a few stops, but Louisiana Tech will struggle to do anything to slow down the machine on the other side.

UTSA vs FIU Game Preview

Why UTSA Will Win

As long as the Roadrunners don’t have any turnover issues they should have this without much of a problem.

The offense is balanced when it has to be, Frank Harris and the passing game are rock solid, and it shouldn’t take too many points to put this away against a FIU offense that doesn’t put points on the board.

The Panthers are able to throw it a bit, but they don’t keep the chains moving, there’s absolutely no downfield passing, and they aren’t able to take advantage of opportunities when they get them.

FIU’s defense hasn’t come up with a takeaway in the last two games, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why FIU Will Win

UTSA can be a little loose at times.

It turned the ball over five times in a two-game span, there was a penalty problem early in the year, and FIU will attack up front to at least apply a little pressure.

For all of the good things the Roadrunners do, they don’t do much to come up with third down stops and it’s possible to throw on this group – FIU has to keep pressing with the midrange throws.

Granted, playing New Mexico State and UConn isn’t a big deal, but the Panther secondary held up well.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

UTSA will methodically get the offense going right away with two first quarter touchdown drives, and everything will fall into place from there.

FIU will get over 200 yards through the air, but it’ll stall on too many early drives and will buckle against the run as the game goes on.

UTSA’s defense will give up a few points in the second half, but it’ll have this well in hand.

WKU vs UTSA Game Preview

Why WKU Will Win

The Hilltoppers are back on track.

The Roadrunners are struggling in the secondary. They got bombed on by Middle Tennessee, Army – yeah, Army – hit the 300-yard mark, and it starts with the lack of a steady pass rush to be a bother.

WKU might not be as potent as last season, but it’s still able to crank up the passing attack with close to 900 passing yards and nine touchdown passes over the last two weeks.

The defense has its moments, it’s not bad against the run, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why UTSA Will Win

UTSA has the ability to move the ball however it wants to.

It might have lost to Texas, but the win over Texas Southern was nice and the 45-30 road victory over Middle Tennessee was big.

Frank Harris and the passing game are going off, the defense held up against the run last week, and the ninth-ranked offense in the country is more than capable of keeping up with the WKU attack.

The Hilltoppers aren’t moving the ball like the 2021 version did, the pass defense isn’t a rock, and they’re good for two turnovers.

They’re not perfect, and UTSA isn’t the 2021 version either, but …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The rematch of the Conference USA Championship – a UTSA win – won’t be quite as entertaining, but it’ll be good battle of offenses trading haymakers.

It’s just the second home game or UTSA since September 3rd, and it’s about to play at a different level.

Sort of like last week’s 34-27 loss to Troy, WKU will come up with its yards, but it won’t be able to do enough to stop the Roadrunner attack in key moments in the second half.

UTSA vs Middle Tennessee Game Preview

Why UTSA Will Win

UTSA continues to play really, really well, even if it’s not having the same results it enjoyed last year in its Conference USA championship season.

The two losses were out of conference so there’s still plenty of time to get everything right, and it starts here with one key part to its game.

Turnovers. Don’t give them up.

Middle Tennessee has been a menace at taking the ball away over the last few seasons, and it’s all kicking in full force with nine forced turnovers over the last three games including three in the stunning win over Miami.

UTSA, though, doesn’t screw up. Frank Harris is a strong veteran quarterback who makes the right reads and doesn’t force his throws, the offense has turned if over just four times in four games, and it all might be enough to push past the Middle Tennessee D that’s strong, but gives up lots of passing yards.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

Oh yeah, the win over Miami thing.

Middle Tennessee wasn’t on anyone’s radar after getting destroyed by James Madison to start the season, and beating Colorado State and Tennessee State didn’t do much of anything.

People sure as shoot noticed the 45-31 win over Miami, though.

The defense stuffed the run, forced three takeaways, and did it all with one of the nation’s most fearsome pass rushes that’s screwing up offenses over the last three weeks.

However …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

UTSA’s offensive line is solid in pass protection and, again, Harris doesn’t get rattled.

The Roadrunner defense is a concern, but Middle Tennessee’s offense doesn’t open it up. It doesn’t run particularly well, and the 406 passing yards against Miami seems like a bit of an outlier for a passing game that’s more about the midrange accuracy.

Chase Cunningham will bomb away on the UTSA secondary, but Harris and company will have enough answers to keep pushing ahead.

This will be fun.

UTSA vs Texas Southern Game Preview

Why Texas Southern Will Win

The Tigers have a good enough rushing offense to matter.

The’ve come up with with six interceptions so far in the three games, and the secondary hasn’t allowed too much through the air, but it’s the ground attack that needs to take over with a few good options to choose from.

For all of the good things UTSA is doing, it’s having a hard time coming up with third down stops, it’s allowing 39 points per game, and  the run D is allowing 206 yards per game. But …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why UTSA Will Win

Texas Southern isn’t Army running the ball.

It’s not Texas or Houston, either.

Texas Southern is a well-earned break for a UTSA that fought the good fight over the first three games and should be 2-1 right now.

Frank Harris continues to be among the best relatively unknown quarterbacks in the country, The UTSA ground attack that hasn’t been able to break free so far shouldn’t have much of a problem, and turnovers haven’t been an issue.

10 Best Predictions Against the Spread

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Southern will bring the effort and have enough pop to put some points on the board, but the UTSA offense will go off in the first half and cruise in the second.

Again, after the first three games, the Roadrunners deserve this.

Texas vs UTSA Game Preview

Why UTSA Will Win

How does Texas pick it back up after that?

Sure, there’s a moral victory of pushing the then-No. 1 team in the nation to the brink, but to get so close and come up with that good of a performance only to lose in such painful fashion …

Again, how do you gear up for a team you’re supposed to beat, but has the potential to make a bad situation a whole lot worse?

UTSA has been solid. It came very, very close to getting past Houston, and it got the job done against a good Army team that wasn’t able to get its ground game going.

The Roadrunner offense – directed by nationally underappreciated QB Frank Harris – is owning third downs, the run defense is holding up just fine overall, and there’s no fear factor here. This team is going to bring the big-time effort on both sides of the ball.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Texas Will Win

It’s not all perfect for UTSA, though.

The offensive line is struggling to keep defenses away from Harris, the D isn’t getting off the field, and penalties were a wee bit of an issue.

And then there’s the secondary. Houston didn’t bomb away for big yards, but Clayton Tune was able to dinking and dunk without a problem. Army – yeah, that Army – was hitting the deep shots to try keeping up the pace.

Alabama needed to grab, grab, and grab some more to keep Xavier Worthy and the Texas receivers from getting loose. As long as the Longhorn O line can keep the Roadrunner pass rush from going off, the downfield plays will be there.

Now …

What’s Going To Happen

Who’s going to be the Texas quarterback?

Steve Sarkisian is being very, very coy on the status of Quinn Ewers after getting full body mashed by Bama. His injured left shoulder is supposedly okay – to a point – and backup Hudson Card isn’t considered out despite his ankle injury. However, they’re both far from 100%, and there’s no sure-thing time they’re expected to be back. That, and superstar RB Bijan Robinson is hurting, too.

Oh, and UTSA is good enough to win this.

This is one of those moments for Texas football.

It’s coming off the soul-crushing loss, it’s stars are hurting, it has a true to Texas Tech up next week to start Big 12 play, and UTSA has the makeup to roll into town and pull a Week 3 version of Appalachian State or Marshall.

Texas will get out of this. The defense will play well again, there will be just enough big plays through the air, and it’ll be a survive-and-advance game after a whole lot of sweating.
