When is the last time the Super Bowl went to overtime?

Super Bowl LVIII is going to overtime. Here’s the last time a Super Bowl went to OT.

After regulation of Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas, the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers were tied at 19-19. The Chiefs kicked a 29-yard field goal with just seconds left on the clock to seal the tie.

Surprisingly, in 57 previous Super Bowl matchups, only one other game has gone to overtime.

That occurred in Super Bowl LI between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons in 2016.

In that game, Tom Brady and the Patriots overturned a 28-3 deficit in miraculous fashion, and went on to win 34-28. Current 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was the Atlanta Falcons’ offensive coordinator at the time.

#Chiefs TE Travis Kelce was roundly criticized on Twitter after his fiery sideline outburst in Super Bowl LVIII.

The Kansas City Chiefs offense is in shambles to start Super Bowl LVIII. After running back Isiah Pacheco fumbled away the team’s best chance to score a touchdown in the first half of the championship game, tensions boiled over on Kansas City’s sideline.

Star tight end Travis Kelce was seen exchanging some heated words with head coach Andy Reid after the disappointing play, clearly displeased with the sequence of events that had just occurred.

Take a look at Kelce’s sideline outburst here:

While the game is far from over, the Chiefs’ dysfunctional offense will need to get into gear if Kansas City intends to hoist the Lombardi Trophy at the conclusion of this matchup.

When was the last time the 49ers won the Super Bowl?

It’s been ~30~ years since the #49ers last won a Super Bowl, but there are a ton of coincidences that line up this year’s club with their last Super Bowl winner:

The 49ers historically have helped define NFL postseason success. They dominated the 1980s and early 1990s and won all five of their Super Bowl trips in that span. Getting their sixth has proven to be a long, difficult road.

San Francisco on Sunday will be in its third Super Bowl since the 2012 season, but they haven’t won a Lombardi Trophy since the 1994 season.

In 1994 the 49ers were loaded and after three NFC championship losses in four years finally got over the hump in Super Bowl XXIX, thumping the Chargers 49-26.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

Now they find themselves in a similar position. In the last four years they have a Super Bowl loss and two consecutive NFC championship losses, and they enter this Super Bowl with a loaded roster.

If history continues repeating itself and the 49ers can knock off an AFC West team in the Super Bowl, it will end a 30-year championship drought for San Francisco.
