Wasabi Fenway Bowl What Happened

– It was tight early with the teams trading touchdowns for a 7-7 game late into the first half, and it was all Louisville the rest of the way. Brock Domann hit MarshonFord for an eight yard score, Jawhar Jordan ripped off a 41-yard touchdown, and the Cardinals had a 21-7 lead at halftime. That was about it. Cincinnati didn’t have any answers.

– Louisville was hardly sharp. It turned it over four times, but there weren’t any real issues thanks to the offensive line and running game. The combination of Maurice Turner and Jawhar Jordan combined for 275 yards with two Jordan scores. The Cincinnati lines couldn’t hold up on either side – the team ran for just 44 yards and managed just 127 yards of total offense.

This was supposed to be a rough bowl game, and it was lived up to the hype. The weather wasn’t as bad as expected – it wasn’t an excuse.

Neither team was a true representative of the regular season version. Cincinnati gave it everything and it kept on fighting, but it just didn’t have the parts or timing in place. Louisville was at least able to run, and it didn’t get too crazy outside of relying on the O line. It’s all okay – it was a very early game to ease the way into a long day of football.

Wasabi Fenway Bowl Player of the Game

Maurice Turner, Jawhar Jordan, RBs Louisville
Turner ran 31 times for 160 yards, and Jordan ran nine times for 115 yards and two scores and caught two passes for 11 yards.

Wasabi Fenway Bowl What It All Means

After a rough start to the season and a slew of twists and turns, you’re jacked to be a Louisville fan right now. Nothing against Scott Satterfield, but start with the program getting favorite son Jeff Brohm from Purdue as the next head coach. Yeah, losing to rival Kentucky hurts, but closing out with a bowl win always makes the offseason better.

The eight-win season it the best since 2019, this is the first bowl win since then, and it’s the second bowl victory since taking down the 2015 Music City. And on the flip side …

For all the slings and arrows Satterfield suffered as the Louisville head coach, he was able to put this program together and leave it in a great place before making the move to Cincinnati – he should be solid in his new home. This was going to be a rough go no matter what for the Bearcats – opt-outs, injuries, and the coaching change were all a problem.

It was a disappointing run with a loss to Tulane to miss out on the American Athletic Conference championship, and this didn’t help. It was still a nine-win season, the program is off to the Big 12, and there’s a lot in place to keep the success going – this bowl loss isn’t a reflection on where things are at.

Cincinnati vs Louisville Wasabi Fenway Bowl 5 Things To Know

Wasabi Fenway Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

At least they’re playing the thing. Welcome to the true inaugural Fenway Bowl – the 2020 version was canceled due to the pandemic, and 2021 didn’t go because Virginia had its own COVID issues. There’s going to be a football game played – the weather doesn’t appear to be an issue – and it’s going to be in Fenway Park. Beyond that, this gets extremely weird starting with …

Scott Satterfield is switching sides. The Louisville head coach is taking over the Cincinnati program after this is all done, and Purdue’s Jeff Brohm is stepping in to take over the Cardinals. For this, it’ll be Deion Branch as the interim UofL head man, and special teams coach Kerry Coombs will take over for the Bearcats.

Cincinnati was 2-2 in bowl games under Luke Fickell – he left for Wisconsin – including last year’s College Football Playoff semifinal loss to Alabama. The program is 10-11 overall in bowls, lost its last two, and is 2-5 in its last seven since beating Duke in the 2012 Belk. But …

Louisville isn’t a whole lot better at this bowl thing. It’s 11-12-1 all-time and just 1-3 in its last four – it dropped the SERVPRO First Responder to Air Force last season.

The two former Big East brothers haven’t played since 2013 – a 31-24 Louisville win. Cincinnati lost to Tulane to close out the regular season, but all three defeats were by a touchdown or less. Louisville dropped two of its last three, but turned the year around with a big second half run with five wins in six games before closing with a loss to Kentucky.

CFN Experts Picks: Bowls December 16th-19th

Why Cincinnati Will Win The Wasabi Fenway Bowl

Malik Cunningham is opting out. The do-it-all Louisville star quarterback was banged up late in the year and Brock Domann took over most of the duties, but the offense didn’t click quite as well without the main man – playing Clemson and Kentucky had something to do with that over the last three weeks.

The Cardinal O is also missing RB Tiyon Evans along with leading receiver WR Tyler Hudson. That’s a problem against a Bearcat defense that led the AAC in total and scoring D, brings a strong pass rush, and should be good enough against the Cardinal passing game even with QB JQ Hardaway in the transfer portal.

Against Louisville it usually comes down to takeaways. It forced three or more six times going 4-2 when it did, but Cincinnati doesn’t turn the ball over enough to matter. However …

Why Louisville Will Win The Wasabi Fenway Bowl

The Cincinnati offense has stalled a bit too much late in the year.

It wasn’t close to being the explosive version of last season, but for the most part it was effective. The defense did most of the work, the offense did what was needed to get by, win close game, repeat.

However, the passing game wasn’t close to being accurate enough in the key loss to Tulane or the close win over East Carolina, and the running game wasn’t quite enough most of the time to pick up the slack.

On the other side, run against Cincinnati, beat Cincinnati.

The Bearcat defense was able to hold up fine against the better passing teams, but was 1-3 against the offenses that hit 200 or more rushing yards. Louisville lost to Florida State in a fun fight, but that’s the only blip when rushing for over 165 yards going 6-1 including the victory over NC State and the win over a brick wall of a James Madison D.

Why NC State Will Win

Is Malik Cunningham able to go?

The Louisville star quarterback hurt his shoulder in the loss to Clemson and he’s iffy at best.

The NC State offense might be a bit hit or miss, but it won’t need to take a ton of chances if the defense can hold up. For all of the problems in the loss to Boston College last week, the D was great at getting into the backfield, forced three takeaways, and it should be able to keep the game close.

State is great at slowing the game down, the run defense hasn’t allowed more than 50 yards in any of the last three games, and …

Bowl Projections

Why Louisville Will Win

The turnovers.

NC State was air tight with the turnovers with none over a three game span, and then it all fell apart in the loss to Boston College with four giveaways. That might not be the norm for the team, but Louisville can force the issue.

How does it get over the possible absence of its main man at quarterback? The defense can change things around by forcing a slew of takeaways.

There weren’t any in the win over James Madison, but that was the only time in the last eight games the D didn’t generate multiple takeaways, and there were three or more in six of the last seven games.

Relying on the defense is nice, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Getting the Cardinal offense up to 400 yards or more will get it done if the defense does what it can do.

NC State probably won’t turn it over like it did last week, but it’s going to stall a bit too much – the Louisville pass rush will take over for a few stretches.

There won’t be an explosion of points with these two defenses, but it’ll be entertaining.

Clemson vs Louisville Game Preview

Why Louisville Will Win

Louisville turned everything around in a hurry by taking the ball away.

It had a 2-3 record, the season was slipping into the abyss, and the offense couldn’t seem to come though in key moments. Turning the ball over nine times in the first four games was a big part of the problem.

And then the defense saved the day.

It wasn’t a rock, but it started taking ball away in bunches with 23 in a six game stretch. It didn’t come up with one against James Madison, but it didn’t need to in a dominant 34-10 win.

Clemson turned it over six times in the last two games, it’s been run over way too easily – Louisville’s ground game has been fantastic lately – and it’s almost certain to be a bit down after a rough day in South Bend.

However …

CFP Rankings: Think, Know, Believe

Why Clemson Will Win

Don’t count out the Tigers just yet.

No, losing 35-14 at Notre Dame didn’t do anything to help the College Football Playoff dreams, but there’s still plenty of time to get back on track. That was the last road game of the season.

This has been a rocky year with the team struggling way too much week after week, and then Notre Dame’s offense ran wild.

Yes, Louisville is running well, and yes, it has one of the nation’s best pass rushes to be disruptive. However, the Clemson defense might just raise up its play after all that happened last week.

The Cardinals haven’t faced lines like they’re about to deal with. They’ll get into the Tiger backfield enough to keep this close, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Here comes the Clemson ground attack.

It didn’t go anywhere against Notre Dame, but so far this year the problems on the ground have mostly come away from Death Valley. Again with the home side of things – Clemson should be far stronger energy-wise right out of the gate.

It’s Clemson – nothing is going to be easy – but the lines will look for redemption after that trip to South Bend. They’ll get it.

James Madison vs Louisville Game Preview

Why James Madison Will Win

There might have been a few problems lately with two straight losses, but the run defense remained the best in the nation.

The Dukes are only allowing 55 yards per game even after giving up a season-most 167 yards in the loss to Marshall.

The defensive front is amazing at getting into the backfield and creating negative plays, the passing game should push for 300 yards, and the secondary won’t allow much to this bunch.

Louisville can throw, but it’s not always consistently connecting. However …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Louisville Will Win

The defense continues to take the ball away by the truckload.

Louisville’s offense is going to run well and take advantage of any openings, but it’s not going to hang up almost 600 yards on the James Madison defense like Georgia Southern did a few weeks ago.

What it will do, though, is get more than a few takeaways.

The D has come up with 23 in the last six games including a stunning eight in the 48-21 win over Wake Forest last week. That has made all the difference.

Not surprisingly, Louisville is 4-1 when coming up with three or more takeaways. James Madison has turned it over nine times in the last two weeks and multiple times in four of the last five games so …

What’s Going To Happen

James Madison has the defense, the balanced offense, and the fire to pull off a win in its first game against a Power Five team as an FBS program. It’ll play well and keep up, but two turnovers will be a problem.

The Louisville defense is feeling it. It’s playing well, and it’ll take over when needed in the second half.
