Iowa State at West Virginia Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

Iowa State has to turn up its defensive pressure another few notches.

It’s not going to be able to get much on the move, and it’s not going to do a lot from three. What it will do is force lots and lots of turnovers – no one in the Big 12 comes up with more.

West Virginia is a bit hit-or-miss on mistakes. It loses when it turns the ball over a ton, but it’s able to make up for its problems with fast break points and forcing a whole lot of fouls.

Iowa State has a way of grinding games down, relying on the big defensive stop, and …

Why West Virginia Will Win

Iowa State fouls. A lot.

It’s a strong Cyclone team that’s been able to hover close to the top ten overall in the rankings, but it doesn’t do a thing on the move, it never gets to the free throw line, and that stifling D generates a whole lot of fouls.

It all works because the fouls slow things down, but no one in the Big 12 gets paid on the free throw line like West Virginia does. If it can get there 20ish times and make 15ish or more, it should be fine.

But …

What’s Going To Happen

No one fouls more than West Virginia.

The difference, though, will be that the home side will make its free throws and the road side won’t.

There won’t be anything aesthetically pleasing about this game. It’ll be about the D, the free throws, and a West Virginia team that will play right into the geared down tempo.

Kansas vs Iowa State Game Preview

Why Kansas Will Win

Now the Jayhawks are back on track.

After a three game losing streak following the 62-60 win over Iowa State, they were able to roll Kentucky and Kansas State in impressive performances that made it look like they’re ready to make a run.

What’s the difference? The turnovers have slowed, the threes have been there, and the team is passing the ball around better – they’re playing like they’re a bit more focused and sharper.

On the flip side, Iowa State is coming off of two straight losses when it couldn’t do much of anything on the free throw line, turned it over 35 times in the two games, and …

Why Iowa State Will Win

Now it’s back home.

2-5 away from Ames, this is a night-and-day different team at home winning 11 out of 11.

What’s the difference? There are a whole lot more takeaways and mistakes forced, coming up with 20 or more in five of the 11 home wins and more than 15 just twice – with 19 in those two – away from the Hilton.

Kansas doesn’t have a huge turnover problem, there are enough to matter.  The Cyclones were able to battle and claw in the two point loss the first time around with just 12 takeaways. They’ll come up with more in this.

What’s Going To Happen

Can the home court advantage really mean that much here?

Yup.

Iowa State has to come up with a huge day on the defensive glass – that’s a problem for this bunch – but the defense should be able to generate just enough steals to make a difference if …

Free throws.

Iowa State is 11-0 when hitting better than 60% from the line. It’ll do that at home.

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Iowa State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Cyclones miss from the Big 12 slate?

There are a whole lot of positives to this schedule, including in Big 12 play, but there isn’t much of a break in who the Cyclones miss.

On the plus side, Texas Tech is going to be dangerous, and it’s not on the slate. However, all things considered, you’d rather play the American Athletic Conference guys than the normal Big 12ers. There’s no Houston – that’s not great – and there’s no UCF. You’d like to have West Virginia on your Big 12 schedule, too, but it’s not there.

Iowa State Football Schedule What Really Matters

There are two ways to look at how this Iowa State schedule works. There aren’t two home games in a row after the opening two weeks of the season, so there’s no real chance to settle into a groove. On the plus side, there aren’t two road games in a row.

The other negative is the six road games – one of them Ohio from the MAC – with five Big 12 away dates to deal with.

Iowa State Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

The Big 12 is going to be tough from top to bottom, but at least Iowa State gets Oklahoma State TCU, and Texas at home.

Going to Kansas State to play the defending Big 12 champs to end the season is rough, and going to BYU won’t be a peach, but there are enough manageable games to bounce back from 2022 and go bowling.

Iowa State vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

Texas Tech doesn’t move the ball well enough.

It was able to hit everything from the field in a fun win over LSU on Saturday, but it broke an eight game losing streak when the shooting was way too inconsistent, the three-point shooting was generally abysmal, and there were way, way too many turnovers.

Iowa State feasts off of takeaways. It came up with 18 turnovers in the 84-50 win a few weeks ago, it has the best defense in the Big 12, and …

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Iowa State can’t hit a free throw.

The strange part about the Cyclone style is that it’s great at forcing mistakes and wonderful at clamping down, and yet it doesn’t do anything on the move. It’s not like the pace is slow, the team just doesn’t generate a ton of fast break points.

Texas Tech has to slow this game to a dead stop.

Be ultra-careful with the ball, make this about defense and rebounding, and keep this close at home late and turn it into a free throw contest. Iowa State, for all the good things it’s doing, hasn’t hit 70% of its free throws in five of its last seven games.

What’s Going To Happen

This is a quick road turnaround for an Iowa State team that got clocked by Missouri in a rough blowout on Saturday.

It’ll respond with a terrific defensive game, Texas Tech will struggle for too many stretches, and this will get very, very ugly – but in a good way for the Cyclones.

The Red Raiders have to hit better than 45% from the field to win, but it’s been a struggle for them to do that. Iowa State has allowed only six teams to get to 45%, and all of them will be strong seeds in a few weeks.

Why Iowa State Will Win

The defense is good enough to make this a fight.

There hasn’t been a lick of luck – or help – on the offensive side, but the Cyclone defense has been able to keep just about every game close with six of the seven losses by seven points or fewer.

TCU might have a high-powered offense that always finds ways to come though in the clutch, but the Cyclone D is brilliant on third downs, allows just 277 yards per game, and is a rock against the run.

Baylor was able to grind the game down a bit last week and own the time of possession battle, holding the ball for close to 34 minutes. It might be tilted worse than that against the Big 12’s leader at controlling the clock.

Iowa State is 4-1 when allowing fewer than 100 rushing yards per game, and it’s going to sell out to stop the Horned Frogs from getting on the move. But …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why TCU Will Win

Iowa State isn’t going to hold TCU to fewer than 100 yards on the ground.

The offense is too balanced, too explosive down the field, and too good at mixing things up. It was held to a season-low 115 yards on the ground against Baylor, but it made up for it with 327 yards through the air.

TCU is amazing at being able to figure it out. Iowa State’s offense isn’t.

The Cyclones might be last in the Big 12 in total offense, but it’s able to move the ball – the Big 12 is a bit out of whack with amazing attacks. However, they’re AWFUL at putting the biscuit in the basket – it’s one of the worst offenses in the nation in the red zone.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

TCU once again will pull it off.

Iowa State will throw a major scare into the Horned Frogs, but it’ll come up just short as it fails to come through when it has its chances. That’s what it does.

TCU will get to the Big 12 Championship at 12-0 by going on the scoring march it absolutely has to have. That’s what it does.

Iowa State vs Oklahoma State Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

The defense continues to be fantastic, and it’s by a mile.

Iowa State leads the Big 12 in total defense allowing just 284 yards per game – Baylor is No. 2 allowing 355.

Oklahoma State is dead last allowing 466 yards per game – 182 more than Iowa State and 30 more than the second-worst D. That’s been fine, but the offense that was able to overcome the problems went in the tank.

The O got shut out in a strange loss to Kansas State, and couldn’t get going until it was way too late in the 37-16 loss to Kansas last week.

The Iowa State defense isn’t what you want to face when everything is struggling. However …

CFP Rankings: Think, Know, Believe

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Turnovers have been among the biggest issues lately with nine in the last three games. For all of the great things the Iowa State defense does, it doesn’t force takeaways with just five in the last games.

No, the offense isn’t working in a puzzling power outage, but if the Cowboys can get anything going, Iowa State can’t keep up.

The Cyclone offense worked fine against West Virginia, and it should be able to put up 400 yards on the Cowboy D, but the pop isn’t there.

Oklahoma State might not do enough on defense, but it’s great on third downs and it’s able to get into the backfield and come up with big stops. If it can just get off the field and not let Iowa State dictate the tempo, everything should be fine. But …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Oklahoma State offense has to work.

The team is 5-0 at home, but Texas is the only team it faced that’s likely to go bowling. It’s 1-3 on the road, and that appears to be a big deal for the offense, too.

The five best Oklahoma State yardage days this year came at home, the four worst were on the road. Iowa State’s defense is good enough to hold up and hang around, but being back in Stillwater will help.

There won’t be four turnovers like there were against Kansas last week.
