Arkansas State vs Old Dominion Game Preview

Why Arkansas State Will Win

There’s an offense in there that’s just waiting to bust out.

The passing game hasn’t been bad. Throw out the blowout loss to Ohio State and the tough fight with Memphis – those were two road games against better teams, but the Red Wolves were able to throw.

QB James Blackman has yet to throw a pick, the offense has just one turnover in three games, and as long as the offense is moving everything will be fine because …

Old Dominion is AWFUL on third downs. It’s the worst in America converging just 18% of its chances, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Old Dominion Will Win

The Monarchs are making up for mistakes with a defense that’s getting into the backfield and a style that grinds things down to a halt.

There’s a strange mix of things happening. ODU is painful to watch try moving the chains, and yet it dominates the time of possession battle with the way it operates.

On the other side, Arkansas State might be throwing well, but it doesn’t care about the clock. Old Dominion will make the other side play its style.

The Red Wolves can’t run, can’t stop the run, and …

10 Best Predictions Against the Spread

What’s Going To Happen

The should be able to throw just well enough to make this a fight.

Old Dominion just doesn’t do enough offensively to be consistent, but it’s going to keep the game in range at home. When it comes time to come up with the big drive late, though, it’s not going to happen.

Arkansas State will hit the passes ODU won’t.

Virginia vs Old Dominion Game Preview

Why Old Dominion Will Win

Virginia is scuffling offensively.

It hasn’t been able to come up with the high-powered passing game of last year, and the running game fell short in the loss to Illinois last week.

It’s having problems moving the chains, the five turnovers were a problem, and the special teams aren’t doing enough to pick up the slack.

Old Dominion wasn’t able to recapture the magic of the shocking opening game win over Virginia Tech – the defense didn’t come through in the 39-21 loss at East Carolina – but the passing game was okay last week, the D showed it could take the ball away with five turnovers against the Hokies, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Virginia Will Win

Old Dominion’s offense can’t come up with a third down conversion.

It hit just 3-of-24 tries in the first two games, and the Virginia defense could use the help.

Virginia is just getting started. It has the parts to do more offensively, the defense has yet to give up 200 yards either rushing or receiving, and the pass rush should be a big bother in the Old Dominion backfield.

Come up with a few early scores, and there shouldn’t be too much of a worry about an offensive punch coming from the other side. There won’t be a problem as long as …

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Virginia has to chill on the turnovers.

ODU already showed what it could do when it takes the ball away – again, it came up with five turnovers against Virginia Tech – and the Cavaliers lost the ball five times so far.

The offense has to be sharper throwing the ball, but the running game will get going a bit to take the pressure off of Brennan Armstrong. It won’t be an easy win, but the Cavaliers will stuff the Monarch ground game and keep it all simple.

They won’t give Old Dominion the easy opportunities they’ll need.

Old Dominion vs East Carolina Game Preview

Why Old Dominion Will Win

Well that was fun.

The Ricky Rahne era at Old Dominion took a huge turn with the fantastic 20-17 win over Virginia Tech. The program went from not playing in the COVID year of 2020 to taking down an ACC school, and it did it by forcing a slew of mistakes and coming up with the big offensive drive when it absolutely needed it.

The Monarchs forced five Hokie takeaways, and now it has to continue against a dangerous East Carolina offense that turned it over twice in the 21-20 loss to NC State and – to be nice about it – had a few problems with the kicking game.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why East Carolina Will Win

It’s not like the ODU offense worked. No, the performance and win weren’t fluky, but it’s going to be hard to repeat.

Hayden Wolff only connected on 14-of-35 passes, the running game was stuffed for just 84 yards, and now it’s up to the East Carolina defense to make it all continue.

Defense hasn’t always been a given for the Pirates over the year, but it was strong against NC State – it held the Wolfpack scoreless in the second half – and the offense did what it had to do against a great defense to be within a chip shot of a win.

East Carolina should be for real, and …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Here’s where East Carolina goes on a run with Campbell, Navy, and USF up next.

Old Dominion will play well, the offense will be better than it was against Virginia Tech, and it’ll hang around, but the East Carolina offense will take over as the first half goes on. It will turn it over just enough to keep this from getting out of hand, but ODU will make its share of mistakes, too.

Virginia Tech vs Old Dominion Game Preview

Why Old Dominion Will Win

Virginia Tech is trying to figure it all out.

The Hokies aren’t totally starting over under new head coach Brent Pry, but they’re trying to put the pieces together on the fly, and that starts with a quarterback situation that’s down to Marshall transfer Grant Wells and South Carolina transfer Jason Brown.

The O line needs an overhaul, new parts need to find their way into the backfield, and Old Dominion has to take advantage of all of it.

The defensive side returns some good pass rushers, and the offense is loaded with experience. The receiving weapons are going to be a problem for the Sun Belt – ODU’s new league – but …

Week 1 Expert Picks, Thursday & Friday

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The Hokies will be fine.

No, the overall experience isn’t quite there, and yes, it would be nice to have a tune-up or two before dealing with a team full of veterans on like Old Dominion, but the linebacking corps is going to be strong, the secondary will be good enough, and no matter what the coaching staff goes with at the skill spots, the production will follow.

Yes, Old Dominion has plenty of good players, but the passing game has to prove it can be more efficient, the turnovers have to stop, and the pass defense has to show it can do more after a rough 2021.

As long as the lines are okay, Virginia Tech should be able to work out the kinks – Old Dominion isn’t that great, but …

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a road game against a jacked up team looking to make a giant statement – Old Dominion is dangerous enough to pull this off.

It did it in 2018 with a stunning 49-35 home win over the Hokies – and this version is even better.

Virginia Tech is going to need a little while, but the lines will hold up, Brent Pry’s defense will come up with three takeaways, and it’ll be a better-than-it-seems win to kick off the season before the ACC season starts with Boston College.

Sun Belt Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Sun Belt predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

The Sun Belt just got a whole lot more interesting with the addition of Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss from Conference USA – and getting them a year before it seemed possible – and also brought in FCS powerhouse James Madison to a be a part of the fun.

The divisions are staying for now, but the great additions will make it far, far tougher for Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, and Louisiana to keep on dominating – even though they might not take that big a step back, if any.

While it might seem a bit cut-and-dry with the way the league is set up, watch out for some potentially big moves from some teams that struggled. The problem will be the schedules for Troy, South Alabama, and Arkansas State. Georgia State and Old Dominion programs that got to bowl games last season will have to fight, too.

The Sun Belt is stronger than ever and the season should be the best yet. The Sun Belt predictions for 2022 are …

2022 Preseason CFN Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year

QB Grayson McCall, Jr. Coastal Carolina

The star in the emergence of Coastal Carolina football, McCall has been one of the nation’s most efficient and effective passers over the last two seasons hitting 71% of his throws for close to 5.400 yards with 53 touchdowns and six picks.

He’s able to run – 870 yards and 11 career touchdowns – hit the deep ball, and get the high-octane attack rolling at will. Coastal Carolina has some rebuilding to do, but McCall will make everyone around him better.

2022 Preseason CFN Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year

LB Carlton Martial, Sr. Troy

The newly configured Sun Belt is loaded with do-it-all linebackers, but no one does-it-all more more than Martial. He’s not all that big, but the 5-9, 210-pound flash gets all over the field as a bit of a hybrid playmaker.

Going into his fifth season, he already has 443 tackles, ten sacks, 47.5 tackles for loss, and five picks with seven forced fumbles on the resumé.

Old Dominion Monarchs Preview 2022

It’s been an interesting ride for Old Dominion football since joining FBS world back in 2013.

It closed out its 8-4 first season in 2013 – playing mostly FCS teams – giving up 80 to North Carolina, went bowling with a great ten-win season in 2016, spiraled downward from there over three years before missing all of 2020 thanks to the pandemic, and now, after eight years in Conference USA it’s taking off for the Sun Belt.

Granted, it’s on a run of four straight losing seasons – when it played – but it’s got a good young head coach in Ricky Rahne who knows how to get an offense going, the talent base was built up and worked on thanks to the year off, and after going really, really, really young, 17 starters are back with one of the most experienced teams in the Sun Belt.

This will be one of the more interesting teams in the expanded new conference. It’s got the upside to be a big surprise, but the slate is tough and the overall depth is just okay.

However, this is a program with a whole lot of pieces in place to become a factor in a Sun Belt full of teams planning on having big seasons.

Old Dominion Monarchs Preview 2022: Offense

The offense wasn’t always great, but it kicked in when needed over the back half of the regular season on the five-game winning streak to close things. There needs to be more of a running game, but the passing attack stepped up. With ten starters expected to be back, the O should be even more consistent.

The offensive line wasn’t great in pass protection, but it’s about to be a factor in the Sun Belt with four starters back and Donta Anthony ready to step in at center. Khadere Count and Nick Saldiveri are all-star caliber tackles to work around.

Leading rusher Blake Watson is back after taking off for 1,121 yards and eight scores, and Elijah Davis is also back adding a little more size after running for six touchdowns. Both averaged over five yards per carry, and they have to do the running because there isn’t much coming from …

Hayden Wolff is a big passer who’ll be the star of the attack over the next few years. The sophomore hit 63% of his passes for close to 2,000 yards and ten touchdowns with seven touchdowns, and backup DJ Mack stepped in and added a rushing punch with six touchdowns to go along with 856 passing yards and five scores.

The Sun Belt has some weapons to deal with. Ali Jennings averaged over 17 yards per catch with five scores as the No. 1 wide receiver, and Zack Kuntz was a First Team All-Conference USA performer with a team-high 73 catches for 692 yards and five touchdowns. Depth is a problem across the board for ODU – except at receiver.

Old Dominion Monarchs Preview 2022: Defense

The Old Dominion defense doesn’t have the returning talent the offensive side does, but there’s enough to be okay. It was great against the run but struggled against the better passing attacks. It needs to be more consistent and it has to generate a pass rush. However …

The main sackers are back. Marcus Hayes wasn’t a regular starter, but he led the way at one end with 5.5 sacks, but good interior pass rusher Sokoyo McDuffie left for UConn. Even so, the team’s top two tackles – Tyre Bibby and Alonzo Ford – are back.

Leading tackler Jordan Young is done, but Ryan Henry is an all-star in the middle who made 75 stops to anchor the two in the 4-2-5. The team’s No. 3 tackler Jason Henderson will find a role somewhere.

The secondary needs more big plays from the corners. Roger Cray was the main all-around playmaker, but he’s gone. Tre Hawkins was an all-star on the other side making 76 tackles, and now he’ll be the No. 1 cover-corner.

The safety tandem of R’Tarriun Johnson and Terry Jones should combine for over 150 stops, and on the way is Shawn Asbury from Boston College to push for the open spot.

The Sun Belt just got a whole lot bigger, cooler, and more interesting with a shocking expansion that should take the conference up another level.

FCS powerhouse James Madison gets to join in right away, and Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss were able to leave Conference USA and get in for the 2022 football season.

Here’s the problem – several Sun Belt programs that made strides last year are going to have tougher schedules to deal with. Several teams should be better, but might not have the results to show it.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

18. All of a sudden, the Sun Belt has become the cool conference

22 College Football Thoughts For 2022
22. College football is changing, and it’s okay
21, Texas & Oklahoma, you really want the SEC?
20. SEC is really, really good if you like it or not
19. James Madison, welcome to the show

The conference has only been doing football since 2001, and it was always the land of the paycheck programs – the ones the big boys scheduled for an easy 55-3 win on Homecoming.

In one of the shockers of the conference realignment changes over the last year, the Sun Belt wasn’t picked off in the expansion run. Instead, it added James Madison from the FCS and snagged Marshall, Southern Miss, and Old Dominion from Conference USA.

It was a battle to see if Conference USA could hold on to the Thundering Herd, the Golden Eagles, and the Monarchs through the football season, but the divorce is final, and those three are getting remarried right away to go along with a fun James Madison program.

How ugly did it get? Both Conference USA and the Sun Belt released their 2022 schedules including those three teams, but the Sun Belt has their teams.

The Sun Belt East will be made up of Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, James Madison, Marshall, and Old Dominion. The West will be Arkansas State, Louisiana, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Texas State, Troy, and ULM.

No, it’s not time for the SEC to start shaking, but it’s an amazing story that the Sun Belt is not only surviving, but it’s getting a whole lot stronger and more entertaining.
