With strong performances in the preseason and standout practices in training camp, there were a group of players who looked like they could be heading toward a spot on the San Francisco 49ers’ final 54-man roster only to be let go on Tuesday.

Here’s a look at five players who were surprise cuts from the 49ers on cut deadline day in the NFL.

NFL Twitter reacts to Sam Darnold being named 49ers backup QB over Trey Lance

After Sam Darnold was reportedly named the backup QB for the 49ers over Trey Lance, NFL Twitter exploded with different reactions.

During training camp, the battle between Sam Darnold and Trey Lance for the San Francisco 49ers’ backup quarterback position has been one of the most intriguing storylines to follow throughout the summer.

With one preseason left game before the start of the regular season, the competition has appeared to come to an end.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the 49ers are naming Darnold the No. 2 quarterback with Brock Purdy serving as the starter. Lance’s future is unclear, per Pelissero.

Lance is coming off a strong performance in the preseason against the Denver Broncos where he threw for a game-high 173 yards on 12-of-18 passing with a touchdown and an interception. Lance led the 49ers down the field late to set up a game-winning field goal from rookie kicker Jake Moody.

According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, Lance was not on the practice field on Wednesday.

49ers have 3 options with QB Trey Lance

The #49ers are exploring all options with QB Trey Lance. So … what exactly do those options look like?

The 49ers are set to name quarterback Sam Darnold as the backup to starting QB Brock Purdy according to a report from NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero.

That move throws into doubt the future of 2021 No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance, who is now officially in the third-string QB spot heading into his third NFL season.

Pelissero reported the 49ers are exploring all options in regards to Lance, so let’s run through exactly what those options are:

Kyle Shanahan says he was a big fan of new WR Anthony Miller coming out of college

In 2018, the Chicago Bears selected Anthony Miller out of Memphis in the second round of the NFL Draft.

With injuries to skill players like Ray-Ray McCloud and Danny Gray, the San Francisco 49ers recently made an addition to the wide receiver room. After waiving Dazz Newsome, the 49ers signed veteran pass catcher Anthony Miller

When talking to members of the media after practice on Tuesday, Kyle Shanahan said he remembers studying Miller coming out of Memphis in 2018. The 49ers head coach said he remembers being a “big fan” of Miller in college.

I remember studying him coming out of college. We were big fans of him coming out of college. I remember him with the Bears doing some good things. But, we had a workout with guys. I didn’t even go out to it, but they were the most impressed with him out of the four people. I think we had four, maybe three. But, he’s a guy I remember being a big fan of in college.

With Miller still on the board in 2018, the 49ers opted to select fellow wide receiver Dante Pettis out of Washington with the No. 44 overall pick. Miller came off the board seven picks later to the Chicago Bears.

During three seasons with the Bears, Miller recorded 134 catches for 1564 yards to go along with 11 touchdowns. In 2019, Miller recorded a career-high performance with 140 yards on nine catches against the Detroit Lions. Miller has surpassed 100 yards receiving three different times in his career.

In 2021, Miller spent time with the Houston Texans and Pittsburgh Steelers.

49ers preseason winding down, but backup QB debate won’t

Kyle Shanahan plans on taking the veil of uncertainty around the #49ers backup QB job all the way up to the regular season opener.

The preseason may be coming to a close, but the 49ers backup quarterback discussion isn’t going anywhere.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Tuesday in a press conference before practice said that he won’t announce who the backup quarterback will be until closer to the regular season opener in Pittsburgh on Sept. 10.

He also indicated that the backup QB could rotate depending on the week, although given Shanahan’s apparent disdain for variance in his scheme it’s more likely that the backup QB in Week 1 will remain there as long as Brock Purdy is healthy.

The club will also need to designate a third emergency QB under the NFL’s new emergency QB rule, so that player won’t be able to enter a game unless the two QBs ahead of him get hurt. Even if Shanahan wants to avoid clearly stating who the backup is, he’ll need to this year.

San Francisco has one more preseason game coming up Friday at home against the Chargers. After that they’ll have until 1:00pm Pacific Time on Tuesday, Aug. 29 to trim their roster to 53 players. From there the head coach will have 11 days before the regular season opener to officially decide who his backup will be.

Given the lack of clarity around that position throughout the offseason, it’s not a surprise Shanahan plans to continue waiting to make anything concrete.

49ers roster moves: WR Dazz Newsome released, WR Anthony Miller signed

The #49ers officially waived a WR to make room for WR Anthony Miller.

The 49ers on Tuesday officially announced the addition of wide receiver Anthony Miller.

To make room for Miller on the roster San Francisco waived wide receiver Dazz Newsome. Newsome will become an unrestricted free agent if he clears waivers.

Miller was a second-round pick of the Chicago Bears in the 2018 draft. He enjoyed mild success in three years with the Bears, posting 134 catches for 1,564 yards and 11 touchdowns.

He last played in 2021 when he spent two games with Houston and one with Pittsburgh.

For his career Miller has 140 receptions, 1,589 yards and 12 TDs.

49ers QB thoughts: The Trey Lance conundrum under spotlight after preseason showing

Trey Lance is one of the most polarizing players in the NFL. His performances have given plenty of evidence to both sides, but that’s the reason the #49ers aren’t committing to him right now.

49ers quarterback Trey Lance is perhaps the most confounding player in the NFL.

He entered the league as a raw prospect who needed to play in live games to develop. He was tasked with doing so for a team that was ready to compete for a Super Bowl. Injuries have derailed his opportunities to string starts together, leaving him with just four starts as he enters his third year.

Some fans believe Lance should at least be backing up QB Brock Purdy, if not starting. Others believe the team should cut its losses and let the QB go posthaste. His performance in Saturday’s preseason game highlights why there’s such a stark divide.

Lance started out Saturday on the wrong foot. He threw an interception on a screen pass. Had another near interception in the middle of the field. Misfired a couple times and might’ve whiffed on a read or two. The first couple series where he looked like an undeveloped, young quarterback who still needed a lot of work.

When that happens the faction of the fan base that believes the team should release Lance gets a stack of evidence in their favor. When he plays like that, it doesn’t look like a player who can win games in the NFL, much less playoff games.

But then a switch flipped for his final couple series. He was decisive and accurate. His mobility and big arm were on display while he led a potential game-tying touchdown drive in the final five minutes, then a game-winning field goal drive in the final two minutes.

When he plays like that, the faction of the fan base that believes Lance should be starting gets a stack of evidence of their own. That version of Lance looks like the one the 49ers were hoping to get when they drafted him No. 3 overall. He looks like a quarterback that could land among the NFL’s elite.

It’s easy to see why both sides believe staunchly in their opinion.

The “Lance needs to go” side will point to his rocky starts as a sign that he’s not developing at all and that any start he makes for San Francisco would assuredly end in disaster.

The “Lance needs to start” side will point to the second half of his game and say that it’s evidence he develops as he plays, and that stringing a few starts together would allow him to consistently play at the level he played over the final 5:30 of Saturday’s game.

Unfortunately for the team, the only way to find out where he falls on the wide spectrum he presents is by letting him play. Playing him comes with a sizable risk though.

The 49ers believe Purdy can take them over the hump to hoist their sixth Lombardi Trophy. Lance may do that as well, but the floor is low enough that disaster is on the table. Head coach Kyle Shanahan is entering his seventh year and the window with this particular group of players is closing quickly. Risk aversion is understandable given what they know about Purdy, even if the potential reward is an elite signal caller.

The same goes for Sam Darnold as the backup. That he got snaps behind the first-team offensive line Saturday is likely a sign that he’s on track to grab the QB2 job. His ceiling may not be as high as Lance’s, but his floor based on what we’ve seen in the preseason is higher. It’s more risk aversion, albeit there’s risk in starting a QB with 55 interceptions in 55 career starts.

Ultimately Lance is still largely an unknown. The fact his preseason performances spray such high highs and such low lows illustrate the variance that’s keeping the 49ers from committing to him entering the 2023 season.

Perhaps he has a good week of practice leading up to the finale and then tears it up in the finale to give the coaching staff something to think about.

Until there’s something more concrete with Lance though where the fan base isn’t so clearly (and understandably) split, the team isn’t likely to make any major commitments to him as either the backup or the starter unless they’re forced to by availability ahead of him on the depth chart.

Here’s why Sam Darnold played for so long vs. Broncos

Trey Lance wound up playing more snaps in the #49ers win over the Broncos than Sam Darnold did.

The 49ers quarterback plan vs. the Broncos was supposed to be a slightly modified, backward version of what they did vs. the Raiders. Against Las Vegas it was Trey Lance for the entire first half, then Sam Darnold for the third quarter. Brock Purdy getting the start vs. Denver through a small wrench into things, but there was some confusion when Darnold wound up playing well into the third quarter.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan leading into the game said Purdy might start, but then Darnold would play the first half with Lance entering for the second. After the game he explained the reason for the deviation from that plan.

“Yeah. I wanted to give Sam a whole half, just like we gave Trey a whole half last week,” Shanahan said. “And then Brock had a long first drive, they had a long drive and Sam’s first one went three-and-out. So, I felt like he didn’t get to even play in the first quarter except for like three plays. So, the goal was to get him a half. And at the end of the third is when we took him out, I think.”

Interestingly, while Darnold on Saturday might’ve played more game time than Lance did in the opener, they played virtually the same amount of snaps. Lance got 27 vs. the Raiders while Darnold got 29 vs. the Broncos.

Then Saturday despite entering late in the third quarter, Lance out-snapped Darnold 35-29.

If there’s any kind of lead for either player in the backup QB race it isn’t apparent by the division of their workload in practice or the first two preseason games.

Watch: 49ers’ Trey Lance finds Cameron Latu down the seam for touchdown vs. Broncos

Trey Lance ripped a pass down the seam to Cameron Latu for a fourth quarter touchdown pass in the preseason against the Broncos.

After Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold got reps under center in the preseason against the Denver Broncos, Trey Lance was next up. The third-year passer entered the game late in the third quarter.

Following a shaky start that included a tipped pass interception at the line of scrimmage, Lance lead the 49ers down the field for back-to-back scoring drives. Following a field goal on his drive after the interception, Lance pushed the 49ers down the field for a fourth-quarter touchdown drive.

From 22 yards out, Lance ripped a pass down the seam to rookie tight end Cameron Latu for a touchdown. To cap off the touchdown drive, Lance completed six consecutive passes, with his last going for a score to Latu.

With Lance’s second touchdown pass of the preseason, he cut the Broncos’ lead to only two points.
