New Mexico Bowl What Happened

– Down 24-17, SMU got a touchdown pass from Tanner Mordecai to Jordan Kerley with eight seconds to play. SMU went for two, Mordecai chose to run, and he was stopped well short. The onside kick attempt went out of bounds, and BYU got out with a somewhat improbable win, because …

BYU star QB Jaren Hall couldn’t play on his injured ankle, and the offense didn’t complete a pass in the second half. However, Ben Bywater took a Mordecai pass for a pick-six, Christopher Brooks gave the Cougars a 24-10 lead late in the third on a 22-yard touchdown run, and the defense hung on for dear life on the final two-point try.

Sol-Jay Maiava-Peters stepped in for Hall and ran for a touchdown and a game-high 96 yards, but he only hit 7-of-12 throws for 47 yards with an interception. SMU got two touchdown passes out of Mordecai and 91 rushing yards and a score from Tyler Lavine.

New Mexico Bowl Player of the Game

Ben Bywater, LB BYU
He came up with a game-high 11 tackles, and his 76-yard pick six early in the third quarter turned the game around.

CFN Experts Picks Dec 20-27 | CFP NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

New Mexico Bowl Fun Stats

– SMU outgained BYU 389 yards to 256.

– The two teams combined to convert 4-of-5 fourth down tries.

– SMU converted 10-of-18 third down tries. BYU converted 5-of-12.

New Mexico Bowl What It All Means

It might have been a bit of a disappointing season overall, but BYU was able to come a whole lot of adversity and injuries to get out of this with a gut-check win. No, Maiava-Peters wasn’t going to wing it around, but that wasn’t his job. He ran well, the offensive line took over for stretches, and the ground attack and defense got it done.

With this, it’s the second bowl wins in the last four seasons and Kalani Stake has won 29 games in the last three seasons.

SMU is going to be kicking itself for not being able to take control of this right away. It didn’t have to worry at all about the BYU passing game, its own offense was able to move just enough early on.

It was an unfortunate two-point conversion try at the very end – it was like SMU ran its best red zone play for the touchdown – but the offense was able to outgain BYU by 133 yards, it was far more effective, and it had a whole lot of chances.

Even with the loss, it was a good first season under Rhett Lashlee and a fourth straight winning season for the program. However, it’s now 0-3 in bowls since its last win in the 2012 Hawaii.

BYU vs SMU New Mexico Bowl 5 Things To Know

New Mexico Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

It’s the last game for BYU before being off to the Big 12 next season, and SMU would love to show the conference what it’s missing. As is, the matchup has the potential to be fun offensive show depending on the parts still around – more on that in a moment – and worth the watch if and when the Miami-Buffalo game gets dull. This will be rolling as the NFL day finishes up.

BYU was a relative clunker in last year’s Independence Bowl loss to UAB. It lost two of its last three bowl games and five of its last eight, but head coach Kalani Sitake is 3-2 in the post-season in his six seasons.

It’s a nice way to end SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee’s second season. His team won four of the last five games, the offense showed off a ton of passing firepower, and the program will be jacked to get to play in this after the last two bowl games were canceled including last year’s Fenway against Virginia. SMU hasn’t won a bowl since taking down Fresno State in the 2021 Hawaii.

The New Mexico Bowl has normally been a home for a Mountain West team, but BYU ended up being the fit. The Mountain West won the last four and seven of the last nine, and none of games were particularly amazing. Last year’s 31-24 Fresno State win over UTEP was okay, but there hasn’t been a ton of scoring since Colorado State’s 48-45 win over Washington State in 2013. This New Mexico Bowl should change that.

It’s just the fourth time these two programs will meet – BYU is 3-0. The last time was a 19-16 Cougar win back in 1997, but if you’re interested at all in the history of college football, the 1980 Holiday Bowl – a miraculous 46-45 comeback victory led by BYU QB Jim McMahon – continues to be among the greatest bowl games of all-time.

CFN Bowl Expert Picks: Dec 16-19 | Dec 20-27

Why BYU Will Win The New Mexico Bowl

Run, run, run, and keep on running.

SMU might have a big-time offense that scores in bunches and takes teams out of their gameplans, but BYU should be able to get that big offensive line going right away and get physical.

RB Christopher Brooks came back after missing two weeks and ripped off 266 yards averaging close to eight yards per pop in the final two games – this will be his game to dominate.

On the other side, time of possession is relatively meaningless because of how quick SMU the passing game works. There’s a big problem with that – you have to beat BYU on the ground.

The Cougars are 7-0 when allowing fewer than 205 rushing yards and 0-5 when allowing more. SMU only hit the 200-yard mark three times, and all came against mediocre-to-awful run defenses.

There’s one big question mark, though, that could affect all of this …

Why SMU Will Win The New Mexico Bowl

BYU has a massive injury concern at quarterback. Jaren Hall was brilliant all year throwing for close to 3,200 yards with 31 touchdowns and just six picks, and he was second on the team in rushing. He’s very, very questionable – and most likely out – with an ankle injury which means the Cougars might have to turn to …

Uhhhhhh. That’s a great question if Hall can’t go. No one else on the roster has thrown more than one pass this year.

SMU is going to be more concerned about its own offense. Yeah, SMU wins when it runs well, but it wants to throw and throw some more. BYU was able to hold up in wins over Stanford and Utah Tech – allowing over 300 passing yards in each game – but it’s 2-4 when allowing 220 yards or more.

SMU seems like it gets 220 passing yards on the first drive – the loss to Cincinnati was the only time it didn’t get there.

BYU doesn’t have a problem keeping up the pace if the passing game works and the points are flowing, but this is probably going to be a back-and-forth fight. That means …

Why Memphis Will Win

The passing attack is about as consistent as it gets.

It might not be quite as dominant or explosive as the SMU version, but Seth Henigan will complete over 60% of his passes, the O will come up with over 400 yards with more than 250 through the air, and it’ll keep on coming.

Combine the solid offense with a slew of takeaways – two ore more in six games – and there should be enough stops to hang around with the high-powered Mustangs.

But …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why SMU Will Win

Memphis can’t enter the stadium without planning on hanging at least 30 on the board, but this isn’t the type of team that puts up 50 – that’s what it might have to do.

Again, this is a consistent attack that does a little of everything right, but it hasn’t put up a ton of points against the decent defenses.

Granted, SMU isn’t a brick wall defensively, but it’s not awful on third downs and it’s decent at coming up with sacks and generating pressure.

As long as the D can keep Memphis dominating the tempo, the offense that’s hitting close to 500 yards per game should be able to do the rest.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

This won’t be the wild and crazy 77-63 shootout the Houston-SMU game was, but it’ll be a back-and-forth fight with both offenses putting up yards in chunks.

The SMU O won’t roll at will, but it’ll take the lead early and keep answering every Tiger score.

Why SMU Will Win

The offense is relentless.

SMU over the last few years have been interesting, and the offense is good enough to come up with big performances against bad teams, but this year it’s able to consistently connect on the throws, the running game is working, and it’s all going to give Tulane problems.

The Mustangs lead the AAC in scoring and is second in yards behind UCF. As good as Tulane has been, it hasn’t been pushed by too may great offenses.

East Carolina came up with yards but couldn’t score, UCF was able to finish off drives with points, and Houston didn’t get its late burst but was still okay in the loss.

SMU will come up with yards for a full four quarters and won’t screw up enough with just two turnovers in the last five games.

Bowl Projections

Why Tulane Will Win

The SMU offense will keep pushing, but the defense has to prove it can hold up.

Houston is still cranking up yards and points in that 77-63 SMU win, TCU took target practice, and Maryland was almost perfectly balanced.

SMU once again is good at beating the mediocre teams, but it’s not rising up against the good ones. Tulane’s offense has the ability to rip off yards in chunks, but it all feeds off the defense that’s the best in the AAC and has been fantastic against the good passing teams.

The Mustangs will get their yards, but they’ll stall more than they’re used to.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Is it possible for SMU to make one final big push in the AAC title chase?

It needs to win this and hope for UCF and/or Cincinnati to melt down. It’ll make it interesting, but Tulane will get the win it has to have to stay alive for the AAC title, too.

It’s going to get by with enough defensive stops to set up a showdown at Cincinnati for – most likely – a spot in the conference title game.

First, though, this will be a fun back-and-forth fight that goes a full four quarters.

SMU vs USF Game Preview

Why SMU Will Win

Teams this year haven’t done all that well right after firing their head coach.

They do okay in the second and third games after the sacking, but that first game – whether it was Nebraska, or Georgia Tech, or Arizona State, and on and on – have had problems.

USF has moved on from Jeff Scott, but the team still has issues. The secondary is getting ripped to shreds, allowing close to 2,000 yards through the air over the last six games.

The SMU passing game that hit 300 yards in every game but two this year will do whatever it wants. However …

10 Best Picks Against The Spread

Why USF Will Win

The USF running game should work.

The ground game ran for 281 yards in the loss to Temple last week, the offensive line should be able to blast away for big yards against the bad Mustang defensive front, and the offense that averages over five yards per carry should control the game a little bit.

The team has been relatively competitive even with all of the problems. The offense hasn’t been all that bad, it should push for 30 on the board, and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Uh oh.

The SMU offense that came up with 642 yards and 77 points last week against Houston now gets a USF defense that allowed 54 points and 621 yards to a mediocre Temple attack.

SMU’s defense will give up a ton of yards, but there’s nothing stopping what’s coming.

Houston vs SMU Game Preview

Why Houston Will Win

The SMU pass defense hasn’t been all that bad so far, but that’s because it allows a steady stream of about 200 yards or so. It’s the run defense that’s the issue.

Houston will get to at least 200 through the air – it hit that with relative ease in every game so far – but it’s time for the ground game to eat. It hasn’t been able to get to 200 yet, but this could be the team’s best rushing day of the season.

The offense has they versatility to move however it needs to in this. The defense has the ability to get into the backfield and screw up the Mustangs in enough key moments to matter, but …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why SMU Will Win

This Cougar team never makes things easy on itself.

It’s finding ways to win, but the pass defense is spotty, the run D will give up over four yards per carry, and SMU would be able to do whatever it wants to keep things moving.

Cincinnati was able to clamp down on the Mustang O a few weeks ago and it was still close. Other than that, the passing game has roared for well over 300 yards in every other FBS game.

Let’s just say Houston has had a few issues against teams that can consistently throw. Take away the game against a Navy offense that doesn’t throw, and the Cougars allowed 275 yards or more in five of the other seven games and lost the two it didn’t.

SMU will throw and throw some more, it doesn’t have a turnover issue lately, and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

You’d think the powers-that-be would’ve rescheduled this for any other time than the exact moment the Astros would be throwing the first pitch to try clinching the World Series.

Those Houston Cougar fans who tune in for this – or have it on a split screen – should have a whole lot of fun, though.

Get ready for a ton of yards, plenty of parts, and massive momentum swings. Once again Houston will make what should be a win and make it tough, and once again it’ll come through with some late heroics to pull it off.

SMU vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why SMU Will Win

The passing offense continues to roll.

The team overall has a few issues and concerns, but the Mustangs are able to bomb away for well over 300 yards per game put the pressure on teams to try keeping up. Sometimes it works, and that’s when the mistakes come.

Tulsa hasn’t faced a whole slew of teams that can throw like SMU will, and it usually has big, big problems against the run. The Mustangs can run effectively when needed – they’re fine as long as they can crank up five yards per carry.

But they need to throw well to pull this off. They’ll get the yards, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Tulsa Will Win

Is starting QB Tanner Mordecai okay? He’s questionable after getting knocked out of the 29-27 loss to Cincinnati last week. Preston Stone is promising, but he’s not close to being the proven passer the main man is.

Again, it’s not like Tulsa has faced a who’s who of passing teams, but the pass defense is technically the best in the AAC. And again, the stats skew one way because everyone runs on the Golden Hurricane D, but the secondary is able to keep teams from throwing when they want to.

Offenses are only hitting 53% of their passes against this bunch, and if it’s Stone under center the numbers might not be a whole lot better.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, SMU is struggling at 2-5, but the losses came to Maryland and UCF on the road and at home against TCU and Cincinnati. None of those are egregious errors.

Tulsa has been way too inconsistent offensively, and the SMU defense has to take advantage of that by getting into the backfield against a struggling front line.

It’ll be a fight, but the Mustangs will sneak on by with the running game and pass rush working when it has to.

Cincinnati vs SMU Game Preview

Why Cincinnati Will Win

The Bearcats got a week off, and they looked like they needed it.

They’re on track to be in the mix for a New Year’s Six bowl slot if they can keep winning, but they struggled to get by a mediocre USF team, the passing game hasn’t quite cranked up like it should, and the run defense is coming off a tough day.

Again, the time off should be a huge help.

SMU is going to throw it around the yard, but the offense isn’t going to control the clock for more than 25 minutes, the run defense isn’t going to hold up, and Cincinnati should be able to grind this out.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why SMU Will Win

The Mustangs might be able to bomb away on the Bearcats.

Arkansas has a fantastic offense, but it doesn’t necessarily have a high-powered passing game. Indiana doesn’t either, and neither does Tulsa, but all of them were able to push past 220 yards through the air.

SMU might have lost three in a row before taking down Navy, but it faced Maryland and UCF on the road and TCU at home – no shame in any of those – and the passing game worked against all of them.

For all of the good things Cincinnati does, it’s not great on third downs defensively, the pass defense will give up the occasional big play, and …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Here comes the pass rush. SMU will come up with passing yards, but the Bearcat’s will get into the backfield with of the nation’s best pass rushes – no one comes up with more tackles for loss per game.

The Bearcat offense will be balanced, the running game will be great, and it’ll get out of Dallas with a strong win even if it takes a full four quarters to close it out.

SMU will keep pushing, but two late turnovers will matter.

Navy vs SMU Game Preview

Why Navy Will Win

The team needed to pivot, and it did it.

Navy was going nowhere, the offense wasn’t working, the team lost to Delaware to start and couldn’t get anything working against Memphis, and now it won two of the last three with an explosion in the 53-21 win over Tulsa.

That’s how the ground game should work. It’s been more precise, the O line is playing better, and the team is controlling the clock.

On the flip side, SMU is 103rd in the nation against the run, it’s allowing everyone to hit passes – Navy won’t throw, but if it hits three big throws, that will be enough – and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why SMU Will Win

Navy can be thrown on.

The Tulsa offense sputtered and struggled in last week’s loss, but the passing game went for 284 yards, Memphis bombed away for over 400, and overall the Midshipmen pass D is among the worst in the country.

SMU is going to throw for over 300 yards, because that’s what SMU does. It might be on a three-game losing streak, but going against Maryland, TCU, and UCF is part of the reason why. Navy might be playing better, but it’s not one of those three, and …

What’s Going To Happen

It might come down to Navy converting off mistakes.

Along with the running game working better last week the four takeaways made the difference. Navy has come up with eight turnovers in the last three games, and it’ll generate two in this.

It won’t be enough, though, as SMU perks back up at home, gets the passing game going from the start, and the season kicks after a rough few weeks.

UCF vs SMU Game Preview

Why SMU Will Win

The passing game is rolling.

New head coach Rhett Lashlee wasn’t able to get wins over Maryland or TCU, but his team pushed hard in both games with QB Tanner Mordecai bombing away for a passing attack that’s fifth in the nation averaging 353 yards per game.

The UCF pass defense has been solid so far, but can the offense keep up?

It’s been way too inconsistent throwing the ball – it struggled against Louisville and Georgia Tech – and that’s not going to fly in this. The Knights have to be able to move the ball, but SMU will generate plays in the backfield and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why UCF Will Win

The UCF running game should make up for the passing issues.

QB John Rhys Plumlee is trying to show that he’s a passer as well as a runner and great athlete, but he’s too effective when he takes off to not keep using his skills.

The Knights are fifth in the nation averaging 276 rushing yards per game, and between Plumlee and the good backs there’s a rotation that should keep hammering away on an SMU defensive front that allowed 5.7 yards per carry against Maryland and TCU.

UCF shouldn’t make this too difficult on itself. Run the ball, dominated the clock, keep the ball for over 35 minutes, and keep SMU’s O off the field.

What’s Going To Happen

This was moved to Wednesday after the hurricane nightmare rolled through Orlando. It’s going to be a weird game that seems a bit off, but it should be a blast.

Can the SMU passing game take over, and can it get enough of a running game to get by? Can the UCF running game take over, and can it get enough of a passing game to get by?

Yes to all of that, but the Knights will be better on the defensive front, and the secondary will hold up with a few good big plays in the fourth quarter to come up with a massive win to kick off conference play.
