Richard Sherman arrested on suspicion of DUI

This is Sherman’s second arrest for driving under the influence

An unfortunate bit of news dropped this weekend, as it was confirmed by the Washington State Patrol that former Seattle Seahawks cornerback was arrested on suspicion of a DUI. Sherman was arrested and booked into the King County jail around 4:00 am on Saturday morning, and officially rostered shortly before 5:00 am.

Regrettably, this is the second time in the last few years Sherman has been arrested involving driving under the influence. A domestic incident from July of 2021 saw Sherman facing similar charges, as well as other misdemeanor. Sherman was able to plead down the charges in March of 2022.

We will update the story as more information comes out.

Geno Smith to remain on Seahawks roster, at least for now

Geno Smith to remain on Seahawks roster, fully-guaranteeing his salary

‘Tis the (off)season of change for the Seattle Seahawks, as they enter into a bold new era under head coach Mike Macdonald. Plenty of questions still exist for Seattle and will persist throughout the spring and summer. But one thing has been made certain: quarterback Geno Smith will be on the roster.

At least for now.

The Seahawks were facing an impending decision related to their now two-time Pro Bowl quarterback. Smith’s contract features a healthy chunk of change that becomes fully-guaranteed on Friday ($12.7 million). We now know, thanks to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Smith will receive said-money as he will remain in Seattle.

Schefter elaborated how the Seahawks felt it was in their best financial interest to keep Smith at this price when compared to how inflated quarterback salaries have become.

Whether he stays on the team throughout the 2024 season or finds a new home via trade, he stays at a reasonable (by NFL standards) price point. Speaking of trades, if Seattle wanted to go down this route with Smith, they have until March 17, when he’s due a $9.6 million roster bonus.

This is a solid move from all angles. Smith gets his well-earned money, the Seahawks have a viable and affordable quarterback, and oh yeah… they actually get to still have a quarterback on the roster right now.

With backup Drew Lock set to be a free agent and no other player behind him, Smith is technically the only quarterback Seattle has at the moment. Obviously, this won’t be the case for long. The Seahawks are sure to address the quarterback position via the draft this spring. But for now, Smith is still in the equation.

Seahawks to interview Ben Johnson today, Bobby Slowik tomorrow

Seahawks to interview Ben Johnson today, Bobby Slowik tomorrow

The 12th Man will have plenty of incentive to watch two teams during this weekend’s divisional round, as they might feature their next head coach. As the Seattle Seahawks are searching for their new man at the top, they have extended their search to two of the hottest candidates: Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik.

With Detroit set to play tomorrow, the Seahawks are taking full advantage of the off day and are interviewing Johnson at some point today. But they are sharing his time with both the Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Chargers.

Johnson is arguably the top offensive candidate. He revived quarterback Jared Goff’s career, he is an excellent play caller/designer, and showed an aggressiveness most coaches are still lacking in today’s NFL. However, another name – and offense – to keep an eye on is Bobby Slowik of the Houston Texans.

The Texans went from being one of the worst teams in the NFL to winners of the AFC South and a Wild Card playoff game. The straw that has stirred the drink of the Texans has been rookie quarterback CJ Stroud, and Houston’s offense. Now, Slowik is scheduled for an interview with the Seahawks tomorrow.

Next on the docket for the Texans is a tall order, as they must rematch the top seeded Ravens in Baltimore, who has arguably the best defense in the NFL. How Houston handles their business against could make or break the 12’s opinions of Slowik, especially since he will be going directly against fellow head coach candidate – Ravens defensive coordinator Mike MacDonald.

Vikings officially eliminated from playoff contention

The Vikings have been officially eliminated from playoff contention

It was an outside shot to begin with, but any chances the Minnesota Vikings had of reaching the playoffs this season have been officially dashed. The Vikings came into the game against the Detroit Lions needing a win and some help to get into the playoffs, and they didn’t get that help.

Minnesota needed either the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or the New Orleans Saints to drop their games today against the Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons respectively. Unfortunately for Minnesota, that was not to be.

The Bucs took care of business in an ugly game against Carolina, winning their third straight NFC South division crown in a 9-0 win. The Saints, on the other hand, have put together a convincing performance in their game against the Falcons. The Saints also put themselves in position to earn a playoff spot with a 48-17 win over the Falcons.

The Bucs and Saints wins officially eliminates the Vikings, putting an end to their playoff chances — chances that were extraordinary in the first place given everything the team has gone through this season, losing their starting quarterback, Kirk Cousins, and their star wide receiver, Justin Jefferson, for extended periods.

It’s a disappointing ending to a remarkable, but ultimately disappointing, season.

Julio Rodriguez to raise the 12th Man Flag

JULIOOOOOOOOOOO

There have been plenty of special guests who’ve raised the iconic 12th Man Flag in the south end zone this year. From former Super Bowl MVP’s to TV celebrities, the pride of the 12’s runs far and wide.

But the Seattle Seahawks have perhaps saved the best for last. For the home finale, the honors will go to Mariners All Star centerfielder Julio Rodriguez. Two days ago, Julio turned 23 years old. What could possibly be a better way to close out the birthday week?

Julio has only been in Seattle for two years now, but it is incomprehensible how beloved he has become among fans everywhere. In his short time, Julio has easily become one of the most popular Seattle sports figures. Of course, winning two Siler Slugger awards, making two All Star games, and winning Rookie of the Year certainly helps!

Last year, Julio became the first player in MLB history to hit 25 home runs and log 25 steals in each of his first two seasons. He also became the fastest Mariner to 50 career home runs, blowing past Alex Rodriguez.

When Julio takes center stage in the south end zone, there is no doubt this stadium will erupt. Already juiced to take on the hated Pittsburgh Steelers, the 12th Man will be ready to roar.

Seahawks vs. Steelers: Week 17 preview and prediction

Can the Seahawks keep up their winning ways?

The Seattle Seahawks are facing a critical two weeks. If they are able to win out, they have secured their spot in the playoffs. Potentially as high as the No. 6 seed, should the red hot Los Angeles Rams drop one of their next two games. First on the docket for Seattle will be the rejuvenated Pittsburgh Steelers.

It has been an interesting season for the Steelers. Initially, it looked as if they were rebounding nicely from a so-so 9-8 record last year. At one point they were 7-4, but three straight losses to start December had them fall sharply. It wasn’t just that they lost, it’s who they lost to:

  • 24-10 vs the Arizona Cardinals at home
  • 21-18 vs the New England Patriots at home
  • 30-13 vs the Indianapolis Colts on the road

The losses to Arizona and New England were historically bad defeats. Pittsburgh became the first team in NFL history to lose back to back games to teams eight games or more below .500.

However, the Steelers seem to have found new life after the loss to the Colts. Pittsburgh went back to third string – and former starter – Mason Rudolph, and felt the impact immediately. Rudolph passed for 290 yards and two touchdowns as the Steelers offense erupted for 34 points.

As flawed as he is, Rudolph does give the Pittsburgh offense some vertical threat they’ve sorely been lacking for the better part of two years now. There’s an explosiveness second year quarterback Kenny Pickett or backup Mitch Trubisky simply cannot maintain.

As for the Seahawks, they’re hot, but have survived two narrow identical 20-17 wins. It has taken heroic comeback drives in the fourth quarter to take down both the Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans. Seattle’s offense still sputters and looks inconsistent at times, but have shown they’re more than capable of showing up big in the moments that matter most.

Defensively, Seattle’s run defense has been a disaster for weeks now. Since Week 11, they’ve been the worst in the league. Granted, they’ve had to play San Francisco, Philadelphia and Tennessee – who can only score via Derrick Henry. But still, this does not bode well. Fortunately, the Steelers aren’t exactly a dominant rush team, so it’s not like this is a weakness vs a strength.

Regardless, the Seahawks are absolutely going to have to find a way to get off the field. For two weeks now, opponents have been able to engineer lengthy drives, milk the clock, and keep the Seattle offense grounded. Pittsburgh is more than comfortable at playing it conservative, running the ball, and hoping their defense does the job.

Prediction: Seahawks over Steelers 23-21

In many ways, these teams are similar. Especially at head coach, as both are led by Hall of Fame bound leaders who are outstanding culture builders. Mike Tomlin has never once had a losing record as a head coach, and at 8-7 his team will be feeling the pressure to ensure this mark stays pristine.

But Seattle is hot right now, and is beginning to look closer to the team we thought they’d be. Or, at the very least, the team from earlier in the season.

Both teams are desperate. The Steelers are the No. 10 seed in the AFC, but in a four way log jam with similar 8-7 teams. As for the Seahawks, they’re in a tight Wild Card race as well. Seattle and Los Angeles are both 8-7, but the Vikings, Saints, and Packers are all hot on their heels at 7-8.

Admittedly, I find it hard to pick against either coach or team in this situation. But since the Seahawks are actually in a playoff spot and control their fate, I’m going with them to maintain this spot.

I’m also giving the edge to the home team, especially with the rabid 12th Man behind them, still bitter over Super Bowl XL. I’m taking the Seahawks in another close one.

Seahawks officially win the Russell Wilson trade

The final verdict has been reached, and it’s without a shadow of a doubt. Wilson’s ride in Broncos Country seems to be coming to an unceremonious end.

Last year I wrote about how the Seattle Seahawks were clear winners in the Russell Wilson trade after the first year. To arrive at a contrary conclusion was impossible. One team made the playoffs thanks to an infusion of new talent thanks to extra draft capital, while one team suffered an unwatchable season.

But, as I mentioned at the end of the article: “Granted, this is only after one year. Fortunes can change just as quickly in the opposite direction for each team.” At the time, this was definitely true. The Denver Broncos were so abysmal in 2022, it seemed highly improbable of them sinking lower. With new head coach Sean Payton out of retirement, the possibility of a bounce back and getting Russell Wilson “right” was certainly on the table.

For a while, it did look like this was the case. Denver was winning, Wilson was enjoying a strong statistical year, and the Seahawks were in the midst of a losing streak. By Week 14, Seattle was 6-7 and the Broncos were 7-6.

Ranking the NFL’s top 40 QBs by PFF grades going into Week 17

But the clock has struck midnight in the Mile High City. No, the orange you see on the field are not pumpkins, they’re just another disappointing Denver team. The latest chapter in the ongoing sad saga of the Broncos since 2016 now includes a home Christmas Eve loss to the dreadful New England Patriots and the subsequent benching of their $245 million dollar quarterback.

This is it. The verdict is finally in, and the jury has not been left with any shadow of a doubt. With Russell Wilson benched for the remaining two games in favor of *checks notes* Jarrett Stidham, the Seahawks have won the trade.

There is no argument. There are no more hypotheticals, “what if’s” or even hope. The last laugh goes to the team wearing action green and college navy.

No, the Seahawks are not a perfect team right now by any means. Seattle still has plenty of holes and a sizable gap to close between them and San Francisco. I’m sure there are not many who have them on their shortlist of Super Bowl contenders this year. But the Seahawks are accomplishing what they set out to do when they moved on from Wilson: they are rebuilding a core for the future.

Think about the successes Seattle has already achieved from this trade. Devon Witherspoon, who should have been Denver’s No. 5 pick, seems to be a lock for Defensive Rookie of the Year. Charles Cross, who should have been the Broncos’ pick last year, looks like he’s a franchise caliber left tackle. Linebacker Boye Mafe has nine sacks and set a Seahawks record for a sack in seven straight games. Drew Lock, a Denver castaway relegated to a backup role, helped upset the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football.

Meanwhile, the Broncos are now benching a quarterback who has played fine because they do not want to risk an injury that would put them on the hook for tens of millions of dollars. If that doesn’t spell “we’re starting the process of moving on from Wilson” then I’m not sure what will. Which is really quite astonishing when you consider Wilson actually hasn’t even played one snap under the $245 million extension Denver gave him.

I’m not sure what the future holds for Russell Wilson, but it sure seems like his ride in Broncos Country is coming to an unceremonious end.

Golden Tate to raise the 12th Man Flag on MNF

Tate had plenty of memorable moments, but none more iconic than his “touchdown” in the infamous Fail Mary play

The Seattle Seahawks are under an hour away from playing the visiting Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football. It is Seattle’s first game back to the friendly confines of Lumen Field, and their second straight home prime time game.

One of the greatest pregame traditions in sports is raising the iconic 12th Man Flag in the south end zone. Tonight, this distinct honor will be bestowed upon former Seattle Seahawks receiver – and Super Bowl XLVIII Champion – Golden Tate.

Originally a second round pick by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2010 NFL draft, Golden Tate made a name for himself in the Emerald City. For the first four years of his career, Tate was a true blue Seahawk. During his tenure in Seattle, Tate had plenty of memorable moments, but none more iconic than his “touchdown” in the infamous Fail Mary play:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXGFZkIEMK0

Tate finished his Seahawks career with 165 receptions for 2,195 yards and 15 touchdowns. Interestingly enough, after leaving Seattle for Detroit in free agency, Tate did spend time with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Tate was traded to Philadelphia during the 2018 season, where he did catch a touchdown in the Eagles’ 16-15 Wild Card win over the Chicago Bears.

But needless to say, if he’s the one raising the 12th Man Flag, it may not be a grand mystery as to which one of his former teams he’ll be rooting for.

Seahawks Week 15 inactives: Geno Smith IN, Jamal Adams, Devon Witherspoon OUT

t has been a tumultuous week in the injury department for both teams, especially at the quarterback position. But Geno Smith and Jalen Hurts will both play.

The Seattle Seahawks are under 90 minutes from kicking off against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football. It has been a tumultuous week in the injury department for both teams, especially at the quarterback position.

Both Geno Smith and Jalen Hurts’ status was up in the air. Smith with a groin injury, and Hurts with an illness. But both will be in the starting lineup tonight, proving once again the physical and mental toughness of both athletes.

The bad news is Seattle’s defense has taken a hit. Rookie sensation Devon Witherspoon is inactive, depriving us of a narrative between him and Jalen Carter in the same game – the defensive linemen the Seahawks did not draft.

Interestingly enough, Jamal Adams is out. 2023 has been rough for Adams on and off the field.

The full inactives can be seen below:

  • S Jamal Adams
  • T McClendon Curtis

Week 15 preview and prediction: Seahawks vs Eagles on MNF

Jalen Hurts is sick, the Eagles are struggling overall, and hosting a home MNF game? If there was ever a time for the Seahawks to get off the schneid and pull an upset, now would be the time.

Week 15 will conclude in the Emerald City, as the Seattle Seahawks host the Philadelphia Eagles on a Monday Night Football showdown. The Seahawks are currently in a freefall. Losers of their last four games, Seattle is below .500 for the first time since Week 1 this season. For the record, Seattle did not dip below this mark again until December 24th last year.

However, the Eagles are hardly looking invincible right now. Despite being 10-3, Philadelphia has lost their last two games in horrific blowout fashion to the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys. If they lose tonight, they will fall from the No. 2 seed to the No. 5 seed, aka the top wild card spot.

To put it colloquially, the vibes are definitely off in the City of Brotherly Love. Defensively, the Eagles have been a disaster. So much so that they decided to relieve their defensive coordinator (and former Seahawks defensive coach) Sean Desai of his play calling responsibilities. In his place will be former Detroit Lions head coach and New England Patriots assistant Matt Patricia.

Offensively, there is plenty to wonder about when it comes to the quarterback position. Jalen Hurts was shockingly downgraded to QUESTIONABLE yesterday due to a severe illness. The former Oklahoma Sooner did travel separately to Seattle, and is expected to play. But how he will fare, or if he will be able to be at full speed remains to be seen.

As for the other side, lingering questions regarding the quarterback position have been resolved. Geno Smith appears ready to go tonight.

With Hurts and Smith both looking to play, we are spared from the matchup between backups Marcus Mariota vs Drew Lock. Although Lock played admirably overall last week, he did turn the ball over twice and could have had a few more interceptions had they not been dropped.

The Seahawks are in the middle of the lower end of the pack when it comes to the NFC. Ahead of them are three teams with 7-7 records: the Vikings, Rams and Saints. Behind them are the 6-8 Falcons and Packers. Seattle’s season, as far as realistic dwindling playoff hopes go, are likely on the line tonight. A win will keep them on life support. A loss will likely result them updating their football wills.

Prediction: Seahawks upset Eagles 28-26

I’m going back to the “vibes” colloquialism I used earlier. Something in my gut is telling me to pick the Seahawks right now. Yes, Seattle has lost four-straight. But two of those teams have been the Cowboys and 49ers. Two of the top three teams in the conference. In the rematch to San Francisco, and the Dallas game, signs of life and positivity were shown.

It is also important to note Pete Carroll has never lost to the Eagles. During his tenure in Seattle, Carroll is a lofty 7-0 against Philly. In fact, the Seahawks have not lost to the Eagles since Mike Holmgren was the coach. The previous three meetings between these teams were all in Philadelphia, which the last one was also on MNF. This will be the first times these teams have faced off at Lumen since 2017, when the Seahawks upset the the 10-1 Eagles by a score of 24-10.

Additionally, Seattle holds the NFL record for highest win percentage on Monday Night Football. Jalen Hurts is sick, the Eagles are struggling overall, and hosting a home MNF game? If there was ever a time for the Seahawks to get off the schneid and pull an upset, now would be the time. Perhaps the stars have aligned.

Sometimes in the NFL, it’s not who you play, it’s when you play them.
