Baylor at Kansas Game Preview

Why Baylor Will Win

Baylor has been terrific over the last month. It lost at Texas in a decent battle a few weeks ago, but that’s the only blip in a 10-1 run including a strong 75-69 win over Kansas.

How do you beat Kansas? You move the ball around. The team is 5-3 when teams come up with 13 or more assists – and 0-2 when allowing 18 or more – and 13-0 when teams come up with ten or fewer.

What’s going right lately for the Bears? They’re making everything thanks to a whole slew of assists.

This was a decent passing team throughout the year, but it’s been brilliant over the last four games with 67 assists leading to a whole lot of easy points. It has 12 or more in three of those four games, but …

CFN College Basketball Rankings 1-68

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas has been amazing at home.

It had a blip when it didn’t show up in a blowout loss to Kansas State, but overall it’s 12-1 in Allen partly because the turnovers aren’t quite there at home.

Overall the team has kept the mistakes to a relative minimum, as always the rebounding has been great, and compared to the rest of the Big 12 – not the best of outside shooting conferences other than what Baylor does – it shoots threes like Steph Curry.

Baylor will have issues on the defensive boards, the defense overall is just okay, and …

NCAA Tournament Bracket Projections

What’s Going To Happen

This should be fantastic.

It’s one of those games that might end up making all the difference between being in the mix for a 1 seed or possibly down to a 3, the energy will be terrific, and the winner should be in the top four in the rankings come Monday.

Baylor will go on its share of runs, but Kansas will be just a wee bit better on the boards with the defensive intensity coming through late. Baylor will keep this alive in the last few minutes with free throws, but it won’t be enough.

Kansas is 17-1 when scoring at least 70 points, so …

Texas Tech vs Baylor Game Preview

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Texas Tech pulled that out of nowhere.

It was favored against Iowa State, but it was getting rocked at home at what seemed like an easy Cyclone win, and then …

Texas Tech clawed back, forced overtime, and was able to pull it off in overtime after coming up with a victory over a punchless LSU.

It lost to Baylor the first time 81-74, but it shot well, hit from three, and did everything right but …

Why Baylor Will Win

Texas Tech didn’t force enough turnovers against Baylor. Actually, it almost didn’t force any – the Bears only turned it over three times.

Baylor has too many ways to score. It’s great from three, it’s decent enough on fast breaks, and it generates enough offensive rebounds to clean up the mistakes.

Texas Tech isn’t good enough on the boards, it’s not strong on the free throw line, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Baylor won’t collapse like Iowa State did.

Texas Tech will be plucky and hang around for about 30 minutes, but the Bears will start to pull away in the second half. They’ll hit the free throws, find an energy burst for a run of a few key points, and then it’ll start to get away at the end.

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Baylor Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Bears miss from the Big 12 slate?

The Big 12 schedule has a few tough twists and turns, but Bears get a few massive breaks. It starts with not having to deal with what should be a refreshed Oklahoma team. That, and there’s no BYU, there’s no dealing with Oklahoma State, and Kansas is no longer the sure-thing win it was in the past.

However that means it has to face Texas – that starts things off at home – and it has to go to TCU.

Baylor Football Schedule What Really Matters

Baylor doesn’t have to do too much traveling.

It only has four road games – all in the Big 12 – and one of them is against TCU. While it misses BYU, it has to go away from Waco to UCF and Cincinnati. Best of all, there isn’t a run of three road games in four weeks – Kansas State and TCU are the only back-to-back away dates.

And it’s not like going to Fort Worth is a stretch of a drive.

Own home field advantage, and this should be a great year.

Baylor Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Considering Utah and Texas both have to come to Baylor, this isn’t all that bad of a schedule.

There’s a week off before having to go to Cincinnati, and again, there’s no Oklahoma or Oklahoma State to face.

Basically, there’s not a game on the slate that’s not winnable. Getting bowl eligible should be a breeze, and if the team can be a little bit sharper, eight wins with this schedule should be a starting point.

Baylor vs Texas Game Preview

Why Baylor Will Win

How did Baylor pull up out of its nosedive to win six straight? It stopped with all of the turnovers.

The offense got way too slippy in the three game losing streak of a month ago against three good Big 12 teams. The O has been far more careful with the ball, the sooting from the outside has been there, and it’s working to win games played in the 60s and low 70s.

Texas is awful at guarding threes and needs to force takeaways by the bunches, but …

Why Texas Will Win

The Longhorns are going to open it up a bit at home.

It couldn’t keep up with a red hot Tennessee offense that hit everything from the field on Saturday in a 82-71 Vol win, but it’s going to try to crank up the O, get moving, and get this game on the inside.

Baylor can rebound, but it’s better on the offensive glass than the defensive side. Keep taking it to the rim, get on the line, and come up with enough second chance points to matter. Get this game moving a bit, but …

What’s Going To Happen

The only time the Longhorns lost at home this year was the wild 116-103 firefight with Kansas State. This won’t be that.

Baylor will stay in this on defense. Texas makes way too many mistakes on offense and it’s way too inconsistent from the outside. However, it’s going to score.

Baylor is 15-0 when allowing fewer than 76 points and 1-5 when giving up more. Texas has been held to under 79 just three times in Moody.

Armed Forces Bowl What Happened

Air Force was able to march down relatively short fields to get up 9-0 – closing off the first drive with a short touchdown run from Brad Roberts. Baylor fought back late in the first half to get an eight-yard touchdown catch from Hal Presley, and that was about it for the fun. Air Force scores 21 straight points in the second half to put it away.

– Brad Roberts hammered home his second short touchdown run of the game to make it 30-7, and QB Haaziq Daniels ran for a score and connected with Caleb Rillos for a 15-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Baylor couldn’t do anything to control the clock or knock Air Force off its game. It kept fighting and scores in the final few minutes on Blake Shapen’s second touchdown pass of the game – and a two-point conversion from Shapen – but Air Force recovered the onside kick and that was it.

Armed Forces Bowl Fun Stats

– Air Force QB Haaziq Daniels completed four of his seven passes for 103 yards with a score, and ran 15 times for 81 yards and a touchdown.

– Third Down Conversions: Air Force 8-of-16 – Baylor 0-of-11

– Time of Possession: Air Force 40:03 – Baylor 19:57

Armed Forces Bowl What It All Means

It’s a third double-digit win season for Air Force in the last four years, it’s the third bowl win in those four seasons, and overall it’s the fourth straight bowl victory under Troy Calhoun and fifth win in six tries since 2014.

Air Force has its style, it keeps doing it at a high level, and it dares everyone to try to stop it. There might be a ceiling on what it can do, but 10-3 with a bowl win is a strong year no matter what.

It wasn’t exactly the follow-up season Baylor was looking for after winning the Big 12 title and Sugar Bowl. The team had plenty of solid moments, but considering it was ranked in the top ten going into the year, closing with a rough loss like this after dropping three in a row for a losing campaign wasn’t how it was supposed to go.

Head coach Dave Aranda knows how to tweak. He did it from 2020 to 2021, and it’s not like the program needs a rebuild.

Baylor vs Air Force Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl 5 Things To Know

Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

Baylor wasn’t able to repeat as the Big 12 champion, and it lost its last three games, but it was an entertaining season with lots of offense, a decent defense, and enough on both sides to come this close to beating TCU.

But that’s the problem. Beating Oklahoma and Texas Tech was good, but it couldn’t come through in several close losses. Beating Air Force wouldn’t make up for the misfires, but getting this done and finishing with a winning season would be nice.

Air Force was rolling along with a 4-1 start, and it closed with four straight wins. In between it lost two of three games to keep it out of the Mountain West title hunt. Even so, it was a terrific season as it went full Air Force. It led the nation in rushing, time of possession, and in total defense. It’s got the ability to take down the Big 12 team and come up with a ten-win season.

For years Air Force was a sure-thing bowl L, going 4-10 from 1987 to 2009. Troy Calhoun was responsible for two of the losses, and then he and the Falcons kicked it in going 6-3 in the last nine bowls. Win this, and it’ll be four straight bowl victories and five ten-win seasons since 2014. Last year the Falcons beat Louisville 31-28 in the First Responder.

– Baylor has been great at this bowl thing, too. It won four of the last five going back to the end of the Art Briles era in 2015, and Dave Aranda won in his first try in last year’s Sugar Bowl over Ole Miss.

– Around since 2003, the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl always seems to deliver. The matchups might not always be the sexiest on the board, but in the 19 games, ten have been close, last year’s Army win over Missouri was thrilling. The late Mike Leach’s Mississippi State team’s win over Tulsa was – let’s just say – intense at the end, and in 2018 Army cranked up 70 in a win over Houston. This should be entertaining, too.

CFN Bowl Expert Picks: Dec 16-19 | Dec 20-27

Why Baylor Will Win The Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl

It’s one of the few teams that can control the clock as well as Air Force.

It might not quite be able to gear down and hold the ball for 36 minutes, but it could – it hasn’t been terribly far off this year. There’s a good offensive balance, the attack is great on third downs, and things go well when the ground game works.

Baylor is 4-0 when running for over 235 yards and 5-1 when coming up with over 170 yards – the one loss was the last second loss to TCU. The Air Force defensive front might be strong, but the whole machine gets wobbly when teams are able to run against it.

The Falcons are 8-0 when allowing fewer than 115 rushing yards and 1-3 – the one win coming against Northern Iowa from the FCS – when they give up more. Baylor is 0-3 when not getting to 115 yards, but that’s it – just three times.

However …

Why Air Force Will Win The Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl

The Air Force offense got some rest.

The team was just fine over the finishing kick off the season, but it was banged up throughout key parts of the season and it mattered. It’s a team that needs everyone in place and working to be that half-click faster with how it operates.

Baylor might be solid on defense, and it’s great at holding up against the run, but it doesn’t do much to get into the backfield – it’s not going to stop the Falcon O before it gets moving.

The Bears are 1-4 when giving up 150 yards or more, and it’s Air Force – it comes up with that before breakfast. It hasn’t rushed for fewer than 171 yards and is 9-1 when getting to 200.

Why Baylor Will Win

The combination of a balanced offense and decent enough run defense might be enough to pull this off.

The Bears might have stalled in the 31-3 loss to Kansas State, but they came back to push TCU to the brink in last week’s crazy 29-28 loss on a walk-off field goal. Even so, the O continues to be great on third downs to keep everything moving.

Baylor is terrific at dominating the clock – it did that against TCU and keeps the ball for over 32 minutes. Texas doesn’t care about the time of possession battle and will probably lose by well over five minutes.

And then there’s the run defense. Texas is 4-0 when running for more than 205 yards and 3-4 when it doesn’t. More to the point, the three wins when the running game didn’t rock came against teams that aren’t going bowling.

Baylor allowed more than 205 rushing yards just twice so far, but …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Texas Will Win

Yeah, that Bijan Robinson guy is pretty good.

He was stuffed by TCU for 29 yards, and came back roaring with 243 yards and four scores in what seemed like just a few minutes in the blowout win over Kansas last week. That was his second 200-yard game in the last three and his eighth with over 100 yards in his last nine.

Baylor’s defense was amazing against the run over the first half of the season, but it had a few issues in Big 12 play allowing over four yards per carry in each of the last four games. It’s also 2-4 this season when giving up over three yards per run.

Alabama and TCU. Those are the only two teams to hold Texas to under three yards per carry.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Texas will play in the Big 12 Championship with a win and a Kansas State loss to Kansas. It’ll take care of the first part of that itself.

Baylor will once again be dangerous, but it’ll struggle defensively late as the Longhorn passing game does enough to balance out the attack – the Bear D will sell out to stop Robinson.

Baylor is 1-5 when allowing more than 24 points. Texas was held to under 24 by – again – Alabama and TCU.

Why TCU Will Win

The No. 4 team in the nation – at least according to the College Football Playoff – keeps on answering every challenge.

It was a touchdown underdog on the road against Kansas – and the defense rose up and stuffed Bijan Robinson in the 17-10 win.

There were supposed to be problems in various offensive fights throughout the Big 12 season – and TCU has always been a wee bit better.

The team just doesn’t make enough mistakes. It’s one of the best in the country at limiting penalties, it only turned it over seven times, and the offensive versatility allows to adapt and adjust to the game flow.

It might be TCU’s biggest strength – it has a way of finding a way to come through when needed to maintain control.

On the flip side, Baylor has to run well to win. It’s 5-0 when running for over 170 yards – 230 or more in each of those – and 1-4 when it doesn’t.

TCU has yet to allow more than 200 yards on the ground and gave up over 170 just three times.

Why Baylor Will Win

The Baylor defense is the second-best in the Big 12.

The TCU offense really is that good – it’s the best in the conference – but it has yet to face the by-far best D in the league – Iowa State – and now it gets the Bear defense.

Texas was able to keep the Horned Frogs under wraps last week, holding the running game to a season-low 3.6 yards per carry and allowed just 124 passing yards.

The Baylor defense has the ability to take the ball away in bunches – it came up with eight takeaways in the two games before the stunning 31-3 loss to Kansas State – and it needs to control the clock.

TCU was able to get by Texas last week in the fight by dominating the time of possession battle. It’s not going to be able to do that against Baylor.

What’s Going To Happen

Baylor might hold on to the ball for over 32 minutes and come up with a few takeaways, but TCU will adjust.

Once again, there will be chances for the other side to take over and pull off the win, and once again TCU will rise up with a timely stop, a key scoring drive, and whatever it needs to do to slip on by.
