Ohio State vs Michigan Game Preview

Why Ohio State Will Win

The Buckeyes have to start hitting from three early on.

They’ve been struggling lately overall – to be nice about it – partly because they can’t overcome a lack of good shooting from the outside by manufacturing points on the move. They just don’t take the ball away enough and they just don’t do anything on the fast break.

Michigan doesn’t force takeaways and it’s even worse at running up the floor to generate transition points. It’s also mediocre from three.

No, threes don’t mean everything, but the O makes them when it takes them. Ohio State is 10-2 when it hits 46% or better from three and 1-9 when it doesn’t.

That’s a problem, because …

Why Michigan Will Win

Kentucky, Arizona State, Virginia. Those are the three teams that were able to connect on 46% or better from the outside against the Wolverines.

It’s not quite that easy, though. They’re 0-8 when allowing teams to hit 35% or better from three, but overall the defense is solid at getting out on the three point shooters.

Ohio State isn’t one dimensional – it’s hitting 46% overall from the field – but take away that outside element and things change.

Michigan might not have the normal scoring pop, but it has the ability to hang with the Buckeyes on the boards, it’s not going to give up easy points with turnovers, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State is scuffling.

Michigan might not be playing all that well, but it’s at least solid at home. Ohio State is having a hard time on the road going 1-6 in true road games.

It’s Ohio State vs Michigan. The intensity will be there – duh – and there will be a few mood and momentum swings, but the Michigan defense will be just a wee bit stronger overall and being +5ish in turnover margin will matter.

5. Michigan was off from the start

Donovan Edwards ripped off a 54-yard run, and it looked like it was over eight seconds in.

The Michigan offensive line was going to dominate, the defense that held up all season long would take care of business, and yawn, it was going to be another methodical win by the undefeated Big Ten champion.

And then Michigan got cute.

Run, penalty, run, run, fourth and goal from the 2 – the reasonably worst thing that could happen was to get stuffed and pin TCU deep. Instead, the offense tried a Philly Special that was sniffed out immediately, went nowhere, and TCU got the ball on its ten.

The Horned Frogs didn’t do anything and had to punt, but the stop set the tone. Michigan didn’t have the ability to power away on the TCU defensive front, and the the tough guy ability that was there all season long never took over.

Michigan came into this No. 3 in the nation against the run. It gave up 263 yards.

It was third in the nation in total defense allowing 277 yards per game. It gave up 488.

It led the Big Ten and was fourth in the nation in rushing averaging 243 yards per game. It came up with 186, threw the ball 35 times, and was just … off.

It’s like the time off hurt the team – it disturbed the groove it was in.

Michigan vs TCU College Football Playoff Vrbo Fiesta Bowl 5 Things To Know

Why Michigan will win. Why TCU will win
College Football Playoff Vrbo Fiesta Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

It didn’t seem like it was “just the beginning” for Michigan, as Jim Harbaugh suggested coming off a 34-11 pasting from Georgia in last year’s College Football Playoff semifinal.

Harbaugh was 50/50 on going to the NFL – and was probably the Minnesota Viking head coach if he wasn’t lowballed – Ohio State was going to be back to its normal unbeatable self, and the Michigan program was going to settle back into being very good, but hardly among the elite of the elite.

And then it not only did it again, it was even better in an undefeated season with a crazily consistent offensive style of play that held for a full 12 games on the way to winning a second straight Big Ten title.

Last year, the Wolverines had done enough. They broke through, exorcised the Buckeye demon, and proved it was possible to win massive things under Harbaugh.

Not this time. Just getting here won’t get it done like it does for …

TCU was one of the massive pleasant surprises of the 2022 season. New coach, program coming off a mediocre year, some rebuilding to do, and a schedule that looked a tad too daunting – some genius actually predicted TCU was going to lose to Colorado to start the season … I sought out professional help after that.

But head coach Sonny Dykes put together something magical. QB Max Duggan took over early and morphed into Max Tebow, the team found every way possible to win close games and pull off comebacks, and even getting here despite losing the Big 12 Championship was a charmed moment for the program.

It’s not like TCU hasn’t been close. It was No. 3 in the penultimate 2014 College Football Playoff rankings and got pushed out in the final version. In the CFP era this is the fourth season in nine with 11 or more wins, it knows how to crank up the offense, and it can pull the “nobody believes in us” attitude.

This is TCU’s first bowl appearance since winning the 2018 Cheez-It 10-7 in OT – unquestionably the ugliest-played event in the history of sporting contests. However, the program has won four of its last five and ten of its last 13. On the flip side …

– Michigan has been a bowl game disaster. It lost five straight and is 3-12 since winning the 2003 Outback over Florida. Even worse, the last three bowl appearances were brutal blowouts, and the team melted down in the 2018 Outback loss to South Carolina and 2016 loss to Florida State. This is the first time Michigan has ever faced TCU.

No pressure or anything, Fiesta Bowl, but College Football Playoff semifinal or not, you’re supposed to be amazing. Last year’s Oklahoma State comeback win over Notre Dame was one of the wildest moments of the bowl season. The 2019 Clemson win over Ohio State in the CFP semifinal screwed up The entire university for a full year – OSU was out of its mind over the way that game ended.

LSU getting by UCF the year before that was fun, Penn State getting by Washington the year before that was fun, and in all, four of the last five Fiesta Bowls have been outstanding – they needed to be to make up for the 31-0 uggo of a Clemson College Football Playoff semifinal win over Ohio State in 2016.

Why Purdue Will Win

Michigan is playing for fun.

Last year the Wolverines had to beat Iowa in the Big Ten Championship to cement a spot in the College Football Playoff. Here’s the big difference – the 2021 team was 11-1, this one is 12-0. Last year’s team had to win, this one can lose and still – almost certainly – be in.

That doesn’t mean Michigan won’t care, and it would sure like to be a back-to-back Big Ten champion, but from star RB Blake Corum’s season-ending knee injury, to star DT Mazi Smith facing a felony weapon charge that was filed this week, to coming down off the high of rocking Ohio State 45-23, there’s a chance the full focus and intensity might not be all there.

Think 2021 Georgia. Of course it wanted to beat Alabama, but it didn’t bring its A game to the SEC Championship, and the other side cranked up the intensity to win with the College Football Playoff possibly on the line. What’s Purdue’s motivation? How about the Rose Bowl as the 2022 Big Ten Champion?

There’s one other big difference between this year’s Big Ten Championship and last year’s version. Purdue will bring the offense Iowa didn’t.

The passing game hasn’t ripped it up lately, but it’s been steady, effective, and it’s been able to come through when needed. Turnovers aren’t an issue over the three-game winning streak to get here, the running game hasn’t been bad, and QB Aidan O’Connell has been around long enough to not be fazed by the big setting.

The offensive line is good at keeping everyone in the backfield clean, the defense has been great on third downs and getting off the field, and …

College Football Playoff Final Top 25 Prediction
What it means for CFP: Utah beats USC for Pac-12 title

Why Michigan Will Win

The Michigan running game should work.

It took a while to get going against Ohio State last week, and not having Corum for more than two carries appeared to be an issue. Donovan Edwards took over late and finished with 216 yards and two scores, QB JJ McCarthy hit the big plays, and the team pulled off the shocker.

Was it totally crazy that Michigan beat Ohio State? A little bit, but it was how. It came up with the home run shots the Buckeyes are used to hitting, and more than anything else, Michigan was just … Michigan.

Very, very, very consistent, all year long the Wolverines would start a little slow, let the offensive line go to work, and then the avalanche rolled over opponents time and again.

Michigan was down 20-17 at halftime, the defense held up, the O line took over, and Edwards tore off a 75-yard touchdown run, an 85-yard scoring dash, and that was that.

Purdue’s run defense is fine, but nothing amazing.

It’ll hold up early, and it’ll get in the backfield here and there, but the yards will come from the Wolverine backfield. Purdue allowed a season-high 215 rushing yards to Indiana last week, got hammered on by Iowa for over five yards per carry, and …

Championship Week Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan isn’t going to turn the ball over enough to matter. The offense has given it up only six times all year without an interception in the last five games.

Like always, the other side will look like it has Michigan in a little bit of trouble.

Purdue will throw well, it’ll get out to a lead, and there will be enough big plays on both sides of the ball to get the social media world buzzing. And then Michigan will go Michigan.

The amazing offensive line will take over, two good scoring drives will come, the defense will clamp down, and the Wolverines will pull away late on the way to the Big Ten Championship and a trip to the Fiesta Bowl as – at worst – the 2 seed in the College Football Playoff.

Why Illinois Will Win

Can Michigan throw?

JJ McCarthy was fantastic after taking over the starting quarterback gig, but the passing attack has chilled a bit over the last three weeks. It’s hard to argue with five touchdown passes and no interceptions in easy wins over Michigan State, Rutgers, and Nebraska, but the accuracy wasn’t there – that matters.

What went wrong for Illinois in the losses to Michigan State and Purdue? Michigan State and Purdue could throw a bit, and they did – the Spartans hit 66% of their throws and the Boilermakers threw for 237 yards and three scores.

That’s how you beat Illinois – you throw. Michigan wins by running.

The playbook is simple. Get through the first half, wear teams down, and let the ground game take over. That has worked game after game after game, but Michigan isn’t going to be able to do that against an Illinois defense that allowed 100 rushing yards just twice in wins over Minnesota and Wyoming.

So …

Bowl Projections

Why Michigan Will Win

Again, can Michigan throw?

More accurately, can Michigan be … accurate?

The Wolverines failed to connect on more than 57% of their passes just twice – again, the layups against Nebraska and Rutgers – and Illinois is 0-3 when allowing teams to hit more than 53% of their throws.

Yes, that means Illinois is 7-0 when holding passing games down, but that’s a tad bit misleading. The Illini didn’t exactly go against Bryce Young or Hendon Hooker in those seven wins.

Michigan might just be that strong to overcome the Illini defensive front.

Penn State has a D, and Michigan ran for over 400 yards against it. Iowa was able to hold up well, and Indiana didn’t do a poor job, but in those two games McCarthy was too busy throwing well.

No one has been able to keep Michigan under four yards per carry, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Poor old Illinois. That was a cute run and all, but now it’s over, it’s basketball season, and everything is back in its rightful place.

Be very, very, very careful here.

The world is already looking ahead to Michigan going to Ohio State for a showdown of 11-0 unbeaten teams to see who – for all intents and purposes – will win the Big Ten title and be off to the College Football Playoff.

This game is absolutely perfect for Illinois – at least in theory.

The defense should be able to hold up, the offense that’s sixth in the nation in time of possession will take the air out of the ball, and the No. 1 team in college football in pass efficiency defense will be all over the Wolverine receivers.

The Michigan defense will rise up when it absolutely has to – especially with Illinois star RB Chase Brown banged up – but there will be a whole lot of sweating for late November.

Michigan vs Nebraska Game Preview

Why Nebraska Will Win

Very quietly, the run defense hasn’t been bad.

It held up against Illinois allowing fewer than four yards per carry, and last week it kept the game alive against Minnesota allowing 2.8 yards per carry.

Purdue was okay – it committed to the run more than it usually does – and that was the only team over the last five weeks that could hammer away. No, this isn’t a strong Nebraska defensive front overall, but he’s active and it keeps on producing.

Can the Huskers keep up the production, especially in the second half?

Michigan starts slow, and then the ground game keeps hammering until it opens up. If the Huskers can hold Michigan to around four yards per carry instead of six, this could be a fight.

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Michigan Will Win

It’s not as flashy or as fun as Tennessee, and it’s not as strong as Georgia, and it doesn’t have the skill of Ohio State, but Michigan is playing every bit as well as anyone in the country, if not better.

There aren’t any penalties. The five turnovers are nothing. The team owns third downs, the pass defense has been a rock, and the run D is No. 1 in the nation allowing just 652 yards on the year.

Nebraska hasn’t hit 170 rushing yards against any of the seven FBS teams on the slate so far, and it’s not getting there in this. Combine that with the 18 turnovers, a few too many penalties at times, and it’s not going to be sharp enough to overcome the other issues.

Even so, the Huskers will be in early, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, good luck holding up in the second half.

America starting buzzing a bit Saturday night when Rutgers was up on Michigan 17-14 at halftime.

Michigan scored 38 unanswered points to win 52-17.

Michigan State was up 7-3 in the first quarter. Michigan got the running game rolling at won 29-7.

It might take a little bit, but the Wolverines will get there. Nebraska doesn’t control the clock in any way and won’t be able to slow this down, even if the run defense fights the good fight for as long as it can.
