LendingTree Bowl What Happened

Frank Gore Jr. ran for 329 yards with two touchdown runs and a scoring pass – punctuated by a 55-yard touchdown run to seal the win – as Southern Miss scored 21 unanswered points over the last 19 minutes.

Southern Miss got up 14-0 helped by a 64-yard touchdown run from Gore Jr., but Rice roared back with three touchdown passes from AJ Padgett with two to Isaiah Esdale for a 24-17 lead carried deep into the fourth.

– It wasn’t the sharpest game from either side, but Rice hung around even with the massive day from Gore Jr. The final score is going to make the game look worse than it was. The Owls were able to fight back early, but they couldn’t hold up late. The defensive front wore down just enough to allow Gore Jr. to take over.

LendingTree Bowl Player of the Game

Frank Gore Jr., RB BYU
He ran 21 times for 329 yards and two scores, and he completed two of his three passes for 19 yards and a touchdown.

CFN Experts Picks Dec 20-27 | CFP NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

LendingTree Bowl Fun Stats

– The two teams combined for five turnovers, three from Southern Miss and two from Rice.

– The offenses combined for 975 yards. Gore Jr. accounted for 348 of the Southern Miss 550.

– Southern Miss came up with five sacks. LB Daylen Gill led the game with 11 tackles with three sacks.

LendingTree Bowl What It All Means

After two three-win seasons, and without a bowl win since taking the 2016 New Orleans, Southern Miss coming up with a winning season is a big deal in Will Hall’s second season. As part of the new and improved Sun Belt, it’s a nice momentum boost for the program going into the offseason as a potential player in the 2023 conference race.

This might not have been a perfect performance, but considering the rough three-game losing streak late in the season – and the need to beat ULM just to get here – the season changed in a big way late.

Rice was playing with house money.  Of course it would’ve liked to pull off the bowl win, and it had its chances, but as the only 5-7 team in the bowl season, this was a solid game with both sides battling throughout. The run defense got gouged, but there wasn’t any letdown until Gore Jr. finally put it away late.

For all of the problems this year, it was the first bowl game in the five-year run under Mike Bloomgren, and the program’s first bowl appearance since winning the 2014 Hawaii.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

Rice vs North Texas What’s Going To Happen

Can Rice get that sixth win to get bowl eligible? Can North Texas come up with a seventh win to cement a post-season spot?

Rice picked the wrong time for the offense to hit a wall – 17 points over the last two games against WKU and UTSA – with turnovers the biggest problem. The O has given it up nine times in the last two weeks and 18 times in the last six games.

The North Texas defense hasn’t been too bad lately, but it’s going to get hit hard by the Rice passing game. It won’t be enough.

The Mean Green offense will get the ground game going right away for over 200 yards to set the tone. The Rice attack will keep up, but once again the mistakes will be costly.

North Texas is 0-5 when allowing teams to score 31 points or more and 6-0 when it doesn’t. The Rice offense, though, has only scored ore than 27 once on the road in five tries.

Rice vs WKU Game Preview

Why Rice Will Win

Everything is fine when the Rice passing game works.

There was a loss to Houston after bombing away for well over 300 yards, but that was the only misfire when the passing game rolls for over 275.

The running game is okay, and the defense hasn’t been bad, but everything functions better around QB TJ McMahon and whether or not he’s on. That’s big, but against WKU it’s more important to hold down good passing attacks.

Rice is second in Conference USA allowing just over 200 yards, but …

10 Best Picks Against The Spread

Why WKU Will Win

The Hilltoppers passing game is too dangerous top stop. Rice might be able to hold up in shootouts against good quarterbacks, but it’s 0-3 when allowing 249 passing yards or more.

WKU and QB Austin Reed have cranked out more than 270 yards against everyone but UAB – and won.

Everyone focuses on the offense – it’s fourth in the nation and the best in Conference USA – but the defense is showing up. It’s good on third downs and it’s the best in America at generating takeaways.  That means …

What’s Going To Happen

WKU is 6-0 when it comes up with multiple takeaways and 0-4 when it doesn’t. Rice has turned it over two or more times six times in nine games and in three of the last four.

Both passing games will have fun, but WKU will be a little sharper at home as it pulls away in the second half.

UTEP vs Rice Game Preview

Why UTEP Will Win

UTEP does a great job of making teams play its game.

The offense has enough occasional firepower to hit the deep shots, but it would much to prefer to grind away behind a decent offensive line that controls the tempo and the clock.

It’s not a hard formula – the Miners have to 1) run well and 2) limit the mistakes. There’s almost no margin for error here. They lost to Louisiana Tech by turning it over four times, and they gave away the 27-10 game to New Mexico by giving it away seven times.

UTEP is 3-0 when it runs for close to 200 yards or more, and it won those three games with just two turnovers. Rice is 0-4 when allowing 178 rushing yards or more, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 9

Why Rice Will Win

UTEP is in trouble if Rice gets the passing game going.

The Miners survived a big day from the Charlotte air show thanks to three takeaways, but they’re just 1-4 when giving up over 170 passing yards. Rice has thrown for almost 200 in every game but the loss to USC to kick things off and in a strange win over UAB.

Rice will have to deal with a decent UTEP pass rush, but it shouldn’t be enough to be a bother.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Being at home will matter to the Owls.

UTEP was able to pull off its lone road win against Charlotte and its nation-worst defense. Other than that, the team lost its other three games away from the Sun Bowl partly because there were too many mistakes.

Yeah, Rice just got bombed by Charlotte in one of the strangest deep cuts outcomes of the season – the Owls lost 56-23 thanks to a defense that didn’t show up.

The Rice run D will step its game up this week.

Charlotte vs Rice Game Preview

Why Charlotte Will Win

Can the offense overcome the other issues?

The 49ers might not be able to run all that well, but if Chris Reynolds is able to limit the mistakes, the passing game will work. The Rice defense is decent, but the pass defense will give up 200 yards as long as the 49ers are able to hit the midrange throws.

The Owls will turn it over – they’ve given it away three times in each of the last two games and 16 times in the six FBS games, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Rice Will Win

The Charlotte defense doesn’t force takeaways.

It doesn’t stop the run, it doesn’t generate a pass rush, and overall it’s the worst defense in college football allowing 524 yards and 43 points per game. Rice will be able to move the ball however it wants to.

Yes, the Owls turn it over way too much, but that’s nothing compared to the Charlotte O that has to press to make up for the problems on the other side of the ball.

The 49ers have given it away 14 times in the last four games.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Rice will come up with multiple takeaways, but it won’t need them. It’ll run as much as it wants to, and the passing attack will have one of its most accurate and productive days of the year.

Charlotte can make things interesting with its offense, but the defense will disappoint yet again.

Rice vs Louisiana Tech Game Preview

Why Rice Will Win

Just when it seemed like it was time to get fired up about the Owls, the couldn’t get by Houston or Florida Atlantic on the road. Even so, they’re still playing well defensively and should keep this close.

They have to win on the lines and they have to start running right away. Louisiana Tech doesn’t do anything to get behind the line, and it’s getting slaughtered against the run.

North Texas cranked up 475 yards in last week’s win. Rice won’t do that, but it’ll keep hammering away.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

Rice is having a massive problem with turnovers. It gave it away three times against Florida Atlantic, five times in games against Louisiana and Houston, and times in the opener against against USC.

Louisiana Tech might be awful defensively, but it might come up with just enough big plays to avoid the break after bending.

It might be just this simple. Louisiana Tech’s offense can score and Rice’s can’t, at least when it comes to explosion.

Rice hasn’t faced too many offenses that can throw well, and …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Bulldogs will bomb away to overcome a 200-yard rushing day from the Owls.

Rice will do what it can to control the game not the ground, but it’s going to have a problem keeping up.

It might be just this simple, though. Louisiana Tech is 2-0 at home and 0-4 on the road. Rice is 3-0 at home and 0-3 on the road.

Florida Atlantic vs Rice Game Preview

Why Rice Will Win

Here come the Owls.

The two losses were to USC and Houston on the road – or, as on the road as going to Houston can be for the Owls – and they’ve had two weeks to kick back and groove on a nice win over UAB.

What’s going right? The running game has been okay, but the offense didn’t work a lick against UAB. A few takeaways helped the cause, and the run defense came up huge.

Running won’t be a problem against Florida Atlantic.

The Owls gave up 300 rushing yards in a loss to North Texas, and that was a few weeks after giving up 314 yards and four scores to UCF.

Rice won’t run for 300, but 200 will do.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

The Rice defense has been able to hold up, but the secondary has had a few problems over the last few games. It’s giving up a few too many midrange throws as Houston and UAB were able to move relatively easily.

Florida Atlantic might not have a consistent offense, but it’s well balanced with the passing game effective enough to take over for a bit – N’Kosi Perry should be good for about 250 yards.

The defense might not be anything special, but it’s taking the ball away forcing seven turnovers in the last three games.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Is this where Florida Atlantic can turn it back around?

This is finally a team its own size coming to Boca Raton, and it should be a bit stronger offensively.

Rice, though, is too good at controlling the clock and is too strong and keeping the chains moving. The Owls will get their yards, but the O won’t be on the field enough.

UAB vs Rice Game Preview

Why UAB Will Win

The running game is rumbling.

The Blazers have a great rotation between DeWayne McBride and Jermaine Brown, the attack is averaging over six yards per carry and averaging 253 yards per game.

The Rice defense has been solid overall, but it’s allowing close to six yards per carry and it’ll have a hard time controlling the clock like it wants to.

And then there’s the turnovers. There weren’t any against McNeese State, but Rice is having major issues with interceptions against everyone else. UAB has forced three picks in two of the three games, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Rice Will Win

Rice keeps on bombing.

The passing game has been dangerous averaging over 300 yards over the last three games. UAB’s defense might be solid, but it was hit for over 200 yards over the last two games, Georgia Southern was balanced in the last game a few weeks ago, and now the O might need to be ready for a bit of a shootout.

UAB hasn’t shown enough of a passing attack to be worried about. If Rice can hold up just a bit against the run and generate a bit more pressure behind the line …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

UAB’s offense will still be able to run.

The Blazer defense is going to hold up, there won’t be enough turnovers to giveaway easy points, and that ground game will keep Rice from controlling the game like it’ll want to.

Rice will get its passing yards, but the turnovers will be a killer.

Houston vs Rice Game Preview

Why Rice Will Win

Is Rice good at college football now?

It got rocked by USC, but that’s going to happen to just about everyone. The McNeese State win was no big deal, and then came the shocking 33-21 victory over Louisiana for – somewhat arguably – the biggest win in the Mike Bloomgren era.

The passing game has been great with TJ McMahon throwing seven touchdown passes over the last two games. Now he gets to go against a Houston pass defense that was rocked by UTSA and Texas Tech.

The Cougar run D wasn’t anything special in the loss to Kansas, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Houston Will Win

Come on, Houston. You’re better than this.

A puzzling disappointment so far, the team that seemed like it would be the best among the Group of Five programs is 1-2 and probably should be 0-3.

There are way too many penalties, and the offensive line hasn’t been strong, but the secondary should be able to pick off a few passes – Rice has given up seven interceptions so far – and the team is scoring.

Rice doesn’t generate tackles for loss, and the Cougar backfield should get time to operate. Louisiana wasn’t able to get anything going against the Owls, but …

10 Best Predictions Against the Spread

What’s Going To Happen

Houston’s offense should be balanced and it should start to do far, far more.

The defense has been a disaster, and Rice now has the ability to wing it around to make this interesting, but this should be when the Cougars finally have a relatively manageable game without a whole lot of drama.

It’ll take a while to get there – Houston hasn’t been sharp enough and takes a while to warm up – but the program will get a desperately needed win.

Louisiana vs Rice Game Preview

Why Louisiana Will Win

Don’t ask questions, just enjoy the 2-0 start.

It might not be pretty, but the Ragin’ Cajuns are producing with a good rotation at running back – four players have run for 95 yards or more in the first two games – and last week against Eastern Michigan they showed the explosion by taking a tight game and opening it up big in a 49-21 win.

Rice might have been great last week in a win over McNeese State, but the run defense is still a question and the offense has to prove it can produce against a decent D.

Louisiana has yet to turn the ball over, forced five Eastern Michigan takeaways, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Rice Will Win

Rice has been able to control the tempo and the time.

Louisiana doesn’t really care about controlling the clock – it just does what it does with the offense – but Rice tries to be deliberate. It’s holding on to the ball for over 35 minutes per game so far, and it has to do what it can to shorten the game.

The defense generated five takeaways against McNeese State, the pass rush hasn’t been bad, and the front line has to get to the Ragin’ Cajun running game before it can get started.

Rice is a bit better than it’s being given credit for, and the defense will be just good enough to keep this from getting out of hand.

The offense, though, won’t be able to run against the Louisiana defense allowing 2.7 yards per carry. It won’t be a breeze, but again, don’t worry about how it looks – Louisiana will take 3-0.
