Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic What Happened

Well that was fun. USC was up 45-30 on a 43-yard Denis Lynch field goal with 4:30 to play. Tulane needed just two plays to score a touchdown, USC messed up on the kickoff and was pinned deep, RB Austin Jones was tackled for a safety, and then things really got crazy.

Down six, Tulane went 66 yards in 12 plays with a six-yard touchdown grab – which was originally ruled incomplete but was reversed – with seven seconds to play for the win.

Caleb Williams did everything he could. He threw a pick, but he bombed away for 460 yards and five touchdowns with the offense going up by 14 twice and 15 late in the game before the Trojan defense collapsed again.

Tulane kept fighting back even after USC kept pushing ahead. Tyjae Spears came up with four scores – the USC defensive front kept getting ripped up as the game went on – but Williams and the offense almost always took over when needed … at least until the final 4:30.

Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic Fun Stats

– Caleb Williams completed 37-of-52 passes for 462 yards and five scores with a pick, and he ran four times for ten yards. Brenden Rice and Tahj Washington combined for 283 yards on 11 catches – Rice caught two touchdown passes.

– Tulane QB Michael Pratt completed 8-of-17 passes for 234 yards and two touchdowns, and ran 15 times for 83 yards.

– USC held the ball for 39:49, Tulane had it for 20:11. USC outgained Tulane 594 to 539.

Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic What It All Means

The Tulane offense kept on pressing, and with the win, the Group of Five got a huge win. That’s going to be harder and harder to do going forward – in the expanded CFP era the Power Five programs will have most of the parts there, and the field of Gof5 teams won’t be great to choose from – but for now, this was massive for the a Tulane program that went from two wins last year to 12 this season.

The 1998 Green Wave team went 12-0, but it didn’t face anyone like this USC team. The program hadn’t won more than seven games since then, but it was good in bowls under Willie Fritz. It was Tulane’s fourth appearance in five years going 3-1.

Not to make excuses or dismiss this brutal loss, but … whatever. This game would’ve been a nice moment for a USC program that hadn’t won a bowl game since the Rose Bowl at the end of the 2016 season, and it would’ve helped ease a little bit of the pain over losing the Pac-12 Championship.

However, USC has much bigger fish to fry going forward than this. All this did was highlight further that the defensive front needs a makeover. That, and if there was any concerns about motivation going forward, this will certainly help.

USC vs Tulane Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic 5 Things To Know

Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

Let’s put it this way. If you were to tell USC fans 12 months ago that their program that went 4-8 in 2021 was about to have a “disappointing” 11-2 season – complete with a Heisman-winning quarterback and a trip to the Sugar Bowl – you don’t think they’d have taken it in a heartbeat?

Yeah, it would’ve been great if Caleb Williams didn’t injure his hamstring in the Pac-12 Championship, but he did, the USC defense turned into wet tissue paper, and the team biffed its chance to make the College Football Playoff. But Lincoln Riley’s first year at the helm was a massive success, and it’s all just getting started.

Cincinnati was coming off a year in the College Football Playoff. UCF had all the talent in place to make its own run to a possible playoff spot, and Houston was everyone’s darling with a loaded team returning. There wasn’t anyone from the Group of Five going into the CFP, and the Bearcats, Knights, and Cougars are all preparing for life in the Big 12 next year.

Meanwhile, all Tulane did was go win the American Athletic Conference with the program’s first double-digit win season since 1998. If you think USC was a shocker, Tulane was coming off a 2-10 campaign and came up with its first winning season in three years. That, and …

Tulane hasn’t been to a bowl this big since losing the 1939 season’s Rose Bowl. Under Fritz this is the program’s fourth bowl game in five years – it went 2-1 in the first three. This is the chance to establish itself as the Group of Five’s biggest power going forward after the latest round of realignment kicks in next year.

USC has been a relative dud lately on the bowl circuit. It hadn’t been in one of these things since 2019, and it hasn’t won once since the 2016 season’s Rose. After going 9-2 in bowls after Pete Carroll’s first year, the program is 1-3 in them. And for Riley, this is his chance to win his second bowl game in four tries. His first was part of the reason why …

The Cotton Bowl is in need of a good game. Riley’s Sooners destroyed a bunch of Florida uniforms in a 55-20 Sugar in 2020. Last year Alabama went through the polite motions and disposed of Cincinnati in the College Football Playoff. In 2019 Penn State and Memphis put on a show – a 53-39 Penn State win – but that was part of a rough run of seven straight Cottons – and 14 of the last 15 – decided by eight points or more.

CFN Experts Picks: Jan 2 Bowls

Why Tulane Will Win The Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic

Here comes the Green Wave running game.

The offense is balanced with a strong passing attack for a Willie Fritz attack, but everything rocks when the ground game is rolling.

Tulane has been brilliant at being able to adapt and adjust on the fly, but it won the American Athletic Conference championship with 254 rushing yards against UCF averaging over eight yards per pop, and averages close to 200 yards rushing yards per game.

Time of possession doesn’t mean all that much to the Green Wave, but with the best defense in the AAC in points allowed and third down stops, the more the ground game rumbles, the more everything else works with this team.

And again, there’s a passing game. Tulane and QB Michael Pratt lead the AAC in passing efficiency.

And then there’s the USC run defense.

It got run over by Utah in the Pac-12 Championship, allowed 4.7 yards per carry, and can be moved on in chunks. But …

Why USC Will Win The Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic

This is a BIG assumption that Caleb Williams will give it a go even with his banged up hamstring. (We’ll try to change this whole thing fast if he’s not able to play at the last second.)

He’s missing star WR Jordan Addison, and his offensive line isn’t intact, but the big play ability should still be there with the other weapons returning.

Tulane might have a terrific defense, but Houston’s passing game was okay, East Carolina pushed for close to 300 yards, and Memphis and SMU were able to bomb away on the secondary.

USC might not be smooth, but it’ll hit a few home runs.

On the other side, no, the defense hasn’t been anything great, but it’s masterful at taking the ball away. The definition of bending a whole lot without breaking, USC has forced two or more takeaways seven times with 29 on the year.

Tulane doesn’t have a massive turnover issue, but it lost the first time around against UCF when giving it away twice and …

Why UCF Will Win

What did UCF do right a few weeks ago in the 38-31 win at Tulane? The passing attack wasn’t anything special, but the defense came up with two takeaways. The D struggled in the second half after the O came up with a 31-14 lead, but the running game took over when it had to.

The offense finished the regular season as the best in the AAC, it was the best on the ground, and it lead the way on third downs. To do it again, it all starts with the offensive line taking over right away and the running game rolling for well over 200 yards again.

The Knights mixed it up with QB John Rhys Plumlee running for 176 yards, running backs Isaiah Bowser and RJ Harvey combined for 137 yards, and that wasn’t even their best rushing performance of the season.

200 yards is the norm for the UCF ground game with 300 or more in four games. Tulane’s defense has been good overall but the line doesn’t get in the backfield enough, the disruption isn’t there, and …

College Football Playoff Final Top 25 Prediction
What it means for CFP: Utah beats USC for Pac-12 title

Why Tulane Will Win

Tulane’s defense didn’t generate any takeaways in the first meeting. That’s not the norm.

UCF didn’t turn the ball over in the win. That’s not the norm.

UCF is -5 on the year in turnover margin with six in the last two games and 13 over the last five – the Tulane game was the only one without a giveaway in the bunch. It gave it up multiple times in six of the last ten games.

On the flip side. Tulane beat SMU with five takeaways, got by Memphis with four, and force multiple takeaways in five games, winning them all on the way to finishing +7 in turnover margin.

Tulane’s offense is efficient, effective, and controlling. No, it can’t hang yard-for-yard with UCF if this gets into a battle of ground attacks, but it can keep the other O on the sidelines for long stretches.

But it needs those takeaways.

Not only is Tulane 8-0 when it forces at least one turnover, but it won by double-digits in all five games with multiple takeaways. Which is why …

Championship Week Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Tulane will win this and be off to the Cotton Bowl with a good enough defensive performance to survive.

It’ll give up yards, and UCF’s offense will take over at times, but the turnovers will be there. Tulane will be +2 in turnover margin, and that will be just enough of a difference.

That, and the running of Tyjae Spears. The star back was used as a workhorse last week with 35 carries for 181 yards and two scores in the win over Cincinnati, but that’s not normally his his role. He ripped off big yards in the first meeting with UCF, and in this he’ll take over late.

Why Tulane Will Win

The running game continues to be amazing.

The Green Wave style of attack does a brilliant job of getting their backs into wide open spaces to come up with big, gashing runs, and now it’s up to Tyjae Spears and QB Michael Pratt to do just enough to keep the Cincinnati defense working.

The Bearcats are solid against the run, but they’ve ben hit for 174 rushing yards or more in four of the last six games. It starts with Tulane trying to set the tone with the ground game, and then it’s up to the defense that’s got a crazy way of being feast-or-famine with takeaways.

There were five takeaways last week against SMU, four against Memphis and two more more in five games. All Tulane needs is one – it’s 7-0 when it forces a turnover, but …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Cincinnati Will Win

Cincinnati went turnover-free in three of the last four games.

On a roll with three straight wins and in nine of the last ten games, the team has one of the nation’s most disruptive defenses, the offense is consistent through the air, and it figured out its style.

Rely on the defense and great punting game, keep the chains moving just enough to come through when absolutely needed, and rely on the defense some more.

It’s a team that knows how to win. There might be a whole lot of flaws, but keep the score low, get the win.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Cincinnati is 2-2 when allowing more than 24 points and 7-0 when it allows fewer points. It’s also 5-0 at home.

Tulane has scored fewer than 24 points just once – but that was in the 17-10 win over Kansas State.

The winner is playing for the American Athletic Conference Championship, and the loser has a shot of getting there if UCF loses to USF.

So, most likely, the winner is in, the loser is out.

Cincinnati’s defense will be just a little bit better than Tulane’s offense.

How To Watch: ESPN

Why SMU Will Win

The offense is relentless.

SMU over the last few years have been interesting, and the offense is good enough to come up with big performances against bad teams, but this year it’s able to consistently connect on the throws, the running game is working, and it’s all going to give Tulane problems.

The Mustangs lead the AAC in scoring and is second in yards behind UCF. As good as Tulane has been, it hasn’t been pushed by too may great offenses.

East Carolina came up with yards but couldn’t score, UCF was able to finish off drives with points, and Houston didn’t get its late burst but was still okay in the loss.

SMU will come up with yards for a full four quarters and won’t screw up enough with just two turnovers in the last five games.

Bowl Projections

Why Tulane Will Win

The SMU offense will keep pushing, but the defense has to prove it can hold up.

Houston is still cranking up yards and points in that 77-63 SMU win, TCU took target practice, and Maryland was almost perfectly balanced.

SMU once again is good at beating the mediocre teams, but it’s not rising up against the good ones. Tulane’s offense has the ability to rip off yards in chunks, but it all feeds off the defense that’s the best in the AAC and has been fantastic against the good passing teams.

The Mustangs will get their yards, but they’ll stall more than they’re used to.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Is it possible for SMU to make one final big push in the AAC title chase?

It needs to win this and hope for UCF and/or Cincinnati to melt down. It’ll make it interesting, but Tulane will get the win it has to have to stay alive for the AAC title, too.

It’s going to get by with enough defensive stops to set up a showdown at Cincinnati for – most likely – a spot in the conference title game.

First, though, this will be a fun back-and-forth fight that goes a full four quarters.

UCF vs Tulane Game Preview

Why UCF Will Win

The Knight have to keep the offensive balance going.

It would be nice for the offense to explode like it did when it hung 70 on Temple a few weeks ago, but that’s obviously not going to happen. Over 200 yards rushing, over 200 yards receiving – the Knights can do that.

As great as Tulane has been, there isn’t a strong pass rush, there aren’t enough plays behind the line, and UCF and the best offense in the American Athletic Conference should be able to keep the pressure on all game long.

Tulane might be playing well, and it might have pulled off a win over Southern Miss, but the defense will give up a whole lot of passing yards in this.

It doesn’t hurt that UCF leads the league in rushing, too.

However …

10 Best Picks Against The Spread

Why Tulane Will Win

UCF will have to grind through the Tulane defense that’s No. 1 in the AAC.

No, there isn’t enough of a pass rush, and no, there aren’t enough disruptive plays, but the defense is good enough to hold its own in key spots.

There’s a lot of bending without breaking.

Besides allowing just 17 points per game, what is Tulane doing right?

The offense is feeding off the defense that’s so good on third downs, the team is winning the time of possession battle, and there aren’t a lot of mistakes.

Tulane isn’t beating itself with just four turnovers in the last six games and almost no penalties whatsoever.

The team is able to control games, do everything right, and then come through when it has to, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Tulane has to gear up the offense to be ready for a bit of a shootout.

It was able to keep the Houston and East Carolina offenses from going off and – again – didn’t make the mistakes the other side did. That’s going to happen here.

UCF will put up big numbers, but it’ll turn it over a few times, it won’t be able to tun like it normally does, and Tulane will take advantage of all of it.

There will still be hope for UCF, though, in the AAC title chase – these two might meet again in a few weeks.

Tulane vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why Tulane Will Win

The College Football Playoff gave the Green Wave enough love and respect for the No. 19 spot and the top team among the Group of Five programs – they’re in the lead in the race for the New Year’s Six bowl slot, but they have to win the conference to get there.

They’re making up for a few problems on defense with lots of takeaways – eight in the last three games – and the offense continues to be careful with the ball, adaptable, and very, very efficient through the air.

Tulsa’s offensive line has problems in pass protection, Tulane’s defense – No. 1 in the AAC – should be able to live in the backfield, and …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Tulsa Will Win

Tulsa has the passing game to keep up.

Tulane might have good defensive numbers, but it’s having problems against anyone who can throw.

Davis Brin has put up big numbers all year, but freshman Braylon Braxton stepped in against SMU wins was solid enough to be a problem for the Green Wave D – if he gets in.

The Tulsa has been good enough against the pass – it has more problems against the run. The offense is strong enough to make this a bit of a shootout, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Tulane doesn’t come up with a ton of takeaways, but Tulsa will provide them.

The running game should hit 200 yards, the offense will keep things moving and should control the clock enough to steady things after getting hit with a big pass play. Being +2 in turnover margin will make a big difference in a fun back-and-forth fight.

They lost the last two games, but they suffered a late breakdown in the 33-32 loss to Houston, and last week they lost a fun firefight to East Carolina. On the plus side, the passing game has kicked in.

They didn’t have to use it too much in the wins over Temple and North Texas, but it rolled for almost 700 yards in the last two weeks and now should go off against a not-quite-as-great-as-the-stats Tulane secondary.

The Green Wave defense is solid, but there’s no pass rush to worry about. However …

Why Tulane Will Win

The Tulane passing game has been amazing, too.

Michael Pratt has been wonderful this year and great over the last two weeks with two straight 320+ yard passing games to go along with an already strong ground attack.

And Memphis can’t stop any of it.

To be fair, the Tigers played Mississippi State, North Carolina, Houston, and East Carolina to skew the stats a bit, but they’re still 127th in the nation in pass defense – and that’s with Navy factored into the mix.

What’s Going To Happen

The Memphis offense will move, but Tulane will be sharper.

Pratt will be more efficient than Tiger QB Seth Henigan, the defense will be better on key late third downs, and a fun back-and-forth fight will close with the home side controlling the clock on one decent-sized march.

Tulane at USF Game Preview

Why Tulane Will Win

The offense is showing its versatility.

It ran well for the first part of the season – and had good balance with the passing game – nothing really worked until it absolutely had to in the comeback win over Houston, and then came the passing attack in a 24-9 win over East Carolina.

USF hasn’t been all that awful defensively, but it doesn’t generate enough pressure up front. The Tulane backfield is deadly when it gets time to figure out what it wants to do – getting the ground game working on the outside is good, but giving Michael Pratt time to throw is great. When he’s on, forget it.

The Bulls might not be doing much defensively, and they’re not coming up with third down stops, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why USF Will Win

The team is showing potential breakthrough moments.

It played stunningly well at Cincinnati in a 28-24 loss, it pushed Florida way too hard, and if the turnovers can stop and the running game works, it has a shot to make this a battle into the fourth.

Tulane doesn’t generate a pass rush and it’s been hit-or-miss against the run. USF has to be great on the ground. The team is competitive when it gets to 200 rushing yards, but …

What’s Going To Happen

The Tulane defensive front has been too solid against the run – it only allowed 200 yards in the opener against UMass.

Kansas State, Houston, East Carolina, Southern Miss – no one else was able to get there, but USF will come close.

This is USF’s first home game since September 10th – playing four straight away from Raymond James with the hurricane playing a role in that – and it’ll be good for a while, but it won’t generate the key defensive stops to push through and pull off the upset.

The Tulane offense will be balanced on a key fourth quarter scoring drive to put this away.
