Syracuse Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Orange miss from the ACC slate?

Not having to play NC State isn’t bad, and missing Miami and Duke – yeah, Duke – this year is a positive. However, not getting to play Virginia hurts, and Louisville is one of those 50/50 games the Orange might have liked to have.

One of the biggest positives, though, is there’s no Notre Dame. This year that’s going to be a problem for a whole slew of ACC teams, but …

Syracuse Football Schedule What Really Matters

Syracuse has to play both Clemson and Florida State, and the date with the Seminoles is in Tallahassee. That comes early, and the trip to FSU comes after playing North Carolina as part of a run of three straight ACC road games. It’s broken up by a week off, but it’s still a bit of a problem.

Yes, the Pitt game is in the state of New York, but Yankee Stadium isn’t exactly a home game. That means there’s only one true home game – Boston College – in a five date stretch.

Syracuse Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s going to be tough after the first few games.

Syracuse was able to get bowling last season with a thrilling win over Purdue and a few other good performances, but the schedule got tougher, the team got banged up, and there was a problem late.

This year, Colgate, Western Michigan, and Army need to be wins. The home game against Boston College is a must, and after that it’s going to be a fight to come up with an extra two or three victories.

NC State at Syracuse Game Preview

Why NC State Will Win

The Wolfpack know how to get on the move.

They’re making a run at just the right time by not making mistakes – they’ve turned it over fewer than ten times in ten of their last 14 games – and the efficiency is translating into points.

The defense has been strong, but the offense goes on runs, gets the easy shots, and no one has been able to keep up lately other than Virginia, who went all Virginia and slowed things down a bit in the win a few days ago.

However …

CFN College Basketball Rankings 1-68

Why Syracuse Will Win

It’s the third straight road game for the Wolfpack.

They’ve been great away from Raleigh, but now they have to deal with a Syracuse team that might be about to make a late push.

There’s still time to get into the NCAA Tournament with a slew of big games coming up after winning at Boston College and Florida State. It hasn’t owned the Dome lately, but the defense has cranked it up a notch, the interior presence has been good, and it should be able to run with the Pack a bit.

NCAA Tournament Bracket Projections

What’s Going To Happen

Syracuse desperately needs this, and it’s going to play like it.

The defense will keep NC State from getting on the move for long stretches, the outside shooting will be good enough, and overall it’ll hit 50% from the field.

The shaky free throw shooting will be a problem late, but the Orange will survive.

Virginia vs Syracuse Game Preview

Why Virginia Will Win

The Cavaliers are rolling, and they’re scoring.

It’s still going full Virginia and isn’t turning the ball over, it controls the clock, and overall it’s doing the little things right, but it’s also got the O working with 76 points or more in each of its last three games.

That might not seem like a ton, but it’s making everything from the field, it’s doing a great job from three, and Syracuse can’t stop any of it.

The Orange have a bad mix happening. It doesn’t take enough threes, it’s not rebounding well, and for all the good things its defense does, it’s not forcing mistakes.

However …

Why Syracuse Will Win

Can the Orange keep the score down?

They’re 10-0 when allowing fewer than 72 points – Virginia averages under 71 per game.

They played well in the first meeting – a 73-66 Cavalier win – but they couldn’t hit their free throws and buckled a bit too often with turnovers. They have to slow the pace down as much as possible, can’t let Virginia get on the move, and they have to take a few more threes.

Syracuse makes them when it takes them, so being patient in this and working for the right shot isn’t a bad thing. But …

What’s Going To Happen

Syracuse is 1-8 when allowing 73 points or more, and one of those losses was to Virginia.

All three Cavalier losses this year came when it scored fewer than 70 points, but it also took something a bit off-kilter in those three games for Pitt, Miami, and Houston to come up with the wins.

Pitt didn’t put anyone on the line, Houston didn’t make any mistakes, and Miami’s D forced Virginia to shoot under 40% for the only time all year.

The Cavaliers will move the ball too well and be too sharp.

Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl What Happened

– Minnesota got up fast with two good drives for a 14-0 lead, but it needed to keep pushing. Syracuse kept hanging around with QB Garrett Shrader running for two touchdowns on the game and Andre Szmyt hitting two field goals, but down 14-10 and driving, the game turned for good on a Coleman Bryson 70-yard pick six of Shrader midway through the third.

Minnesota starting quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis was knocked out for the game with an apparent leg injury. Veteran Tanner Morgan stepped in and hit Daniel Jackson for two touchdown passes including a 25-yarder late in the third quarter for some breathing room up 28-13.

Mohamed Ibrahim ran for a four-yard touchdown to start the scoring. He finished with 71 yards on 16 carries, closing out the year setting the Minnesota single season and career rushing record.

Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl Fun Stats

– Minnesota linebackers Cody Lindenberg and Mariano Sori-Marin combined for 21 tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss.

– Syracuse QB Garrett Shrader completed 32-of-51 passes for 330 yards with a pick. He also ran 14 times for 38 yards and two scores.

– Total Yards: Syracuse 477 – Minnesota 215

Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl What It All Means

It wasn’t as easy as it should’ve been, but the Gophers were able to overcome a lack of offensive punch, the loss of the starting quarterback, and a few too many missed moments by the defense against a depleted Syracuse team, but it’s a bowl win. With it, they closed the year winning five of the last six games.

It’s the second straight nine-win season for Minnesota and three years of nine or more wins in the last four – the outlier was the seven-game 2020 campaign. And with this victory, Minnesota has won six straight bowl games after losing seven in a row.

Syracuse kept on fighting. It was missing way too many key players, the defense was banged ups, and yet the team hung around and didn’t let Minnesota get comfortable. However, losing this means the team closed losing six of its last seven games.

The Orange were on a bowl run before this. Granted, 2018 was the previous bowl, and 2013 was the bowl before that, but they won four bowls in a row before dropping this.

Minnesota vs Syracuse Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl 5 Things To Know

Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

Minnesota started fast, crashed in the middle, and roared through the finishing kick. It kept the Paul Bunyan Axe with a win at Wisconsin to win four of its last five games with a punishing ground game, decent defense, and with a deliberate style that keeps working.

There aren’t any huge opt-outs or losses. For the most part this should be as close to the regular season version of the Gophers as reasonably possible, especially with future NFL starting center John Michael Schmitz and star RB Mohamed Ibrahim playing. On the flip side …

Syracuse top RB Sean Tucker has opted out, and a few parts are gone from the defense – especially the secondary – but the team shouldn’t be too hamstrung.

In a tale of two seasons, the Orange started out 6-0 – helped by a thrilling win over Purdue – and then the tough part of the schedule kicked in full force over a five game losing streak before closing out with a win over Boston College.

Syracuse is outstanding in bowl games, at least it has. been over the last 20 years. There haven’t been a ton of appearances lately, but it’s 6-1 in bowls since 199 with the last victory coming in the 2018 Camping World over West Virginia.

– Minnesota has been even better in bowl games lately. PJ Fleck has won his first three with the Gophers after going 1-2 at Western Michigan – to be fair, one of those losses was to Wisconsin in the New Year’s Six Cotton Bowl.

Minnesota was an automatic bowl season loser for years – going 0-7 from 2004 to 2015 – and then it all flipped winning five straight including last year’s Guaranteed Rate over West Virginia.

– After a rough starts with four straight blowouts to kickoff the run of the Pinstripe Bowl back in 2010, the bowl was terrific with two overtime games among four straight decided by one score. Things got rough with the COVID cancelation year of 2020 and the Maryland 54-10 whomping of Virginia Tech last year putting the pressure on this to at least be interesting.

CFN Experts CFP, NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

Why Minnesota Will Win The Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl

Syracuse can’t and doesn’t win when it can’t and doesn’t stop the run.

The Orange are better against the decent passing teams and are 7-0 when allowing teams to run for fewer than 150 yards. They’re 0-6 when they don’t.

Minnesota has been held to under 150 just four times. Once was against the brick wall of an Illinois defense, once was against the Wisconsin D, and once was when several main parts were hurt in the loss to Purdue. 200 yards are the norm for this offense going 6-1 when it gets to 240 yards or more.

It’s just as big a problem the other way. Sean Tucker wasn’t used enough, but he’s still good enough to be missed. The Orange offense threw more, but it went 1-5 when it couldn’t get to 125 yards on the ground. The Minnesota D can help make the number tough to hit.

There isn’t going to be anything tricky about what the Gophers are going to do. Run, stop the run, win the mistake battle, leave.

Top 100 Bowl Players | Ranking Bowl Games So Far

Why Syracuse Will Win The Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl

Really, stop the Minnesota running game and you stop Minnesota.

It’s not like the Golden Gopher offense can’t throw, but it doesn’t operate at its best when it’s not able to control the game on the ground. It doesn’t necessarily own the clock, but it has a way of dominating the tempo when things are working.

Syracuse pivoted this year from a running team to more of a balance. It’s got the ability to stretch the field a bit, it’s decent at adapting on the fly, and there isn’t a problem with turnovers.

Minnesota might be fifth in the nation in total defense, but it doesn’t generate a lick of pressure, it’s last in college football in tackles for loss, and …

Why Syracuse Will Win

The Orange defensive line decimated by injuries gets a break this week – even though it’s been decent at doing its job lately.

The D allowed over 100 yards on the ground just once in the last four games and won’t have any issues this week against a Boston College offense that can’t/doesn’t run. It hasn’t hit 80 yards in the last six games, and now all the pressure is on the passing attack that’s hit-or-miss.

Emmett Morehead was on with 330 passing yards against both Duke and NC State, and then it all collapsed in the blowout loss to Notre Dame. For all of the team’s problems lately, the Syracuse pass defense has been terrific – throwing out last week’s loss to the pass-happy Wake Forest attack.

Long-winded thing short – the Orange D should be fine. But …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Boston College Will Win

The Syracuse offense has stalled.

It couldn’t get much of anything going against Pitt, crashed against Florida State, and last week against the Demon Deacons marked the first time since mid-October the team gained more than 300 yards.

The passing game has been off. getting Sean Tucker and the ground game working has been a problem, and Boston College needs to be able to rise up and stop all of it.

The Eagles are 0-7 when allowing offenses to connect on 56% of their passes, and they’re 3-1 when they hold down opposing passing attacks. Syracuse has hit 56% or fewer of their throws in each of the last four games, but …

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Syracuse doesn’t have too many problems with teams that can throw – the Wake Forest game last week aside. It has problems with teams that can run.

It’s 0-5 this season when allowing more than 150 yards on the ground and 6-0 when it allows fewer. Boston College has yet to run for 150 yards this season.

Why Syracuse Will Win

Wake Forest is reeling.

That might be a bit of an overstatement, but the Demon Deacons have lost three straight with way too many turnovers – 14 in the last four games with eight against Louisville – and way too many problems holding up defensively.

Syracuse could use the break.

The run defense has been the problem but the pass D has been okay. Wake Forest can run a bit, but it needs to get the air show going to be at its best. The offense has to slow things down, be accurate with the passing game to own third downs, and …

Bowl Projections

Why Wake Forest Will Win

Syracuse is really reeling.

The defensive front is banged up, the offense has sputtered and stopped, and the team overall has hit a wall with all the injuries losing four straight and failing to get more than 160 yards of total O over the last two games.

Just a few early scores should take care of this for Wake Forest.

No, the running game hasn’t been too special, but it should help the cause a bit with at least 150 yards, the passing game that hit 300 yards in each of the last four games will keep the pressure on the Orange secondary, and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Syracuse just doesn’t have the parts.

It’s trying, it’s giving it everything it has, but it’s thin on the lines, the running game has stopped, and there isn’t enough offensive pop to keep up.

Can the D pull off something amazing and come up with enough takeaways to keep this interesting? No, but the secondary will keep Sam Hartman and the Demon Deacon passing game from going off.

The O just won’t be there.

Florida State vs Syracuse Game Preview

Why Florida State Will Win

It’s Week 11. Are you trending up, or are you trending down?

Syracuse was rolling, it gave Clemson all it could handle in a totally acceptable 27-21 win, and then injuries kicked in and everything started to fall apart. The 6-0 start was great, and it’s 0-3 since.

Florida State started hot, lost three straight tough games, and now it’s trending back up with two straight wins with the offense doing a great job and the D doing a fantastic job against the pass.

Don’t ask how or why. If you’re Florida State and you beat Miami 45-3, things are fine.

The running game has found a terrific groove rolling for over 200 yards in four straight games, and it’s about to do it again against a Syracuse front that’s fighting the good fight, but is painfully banged up.

What’s Going To Happen

Being at home might matter.

Syracuse started out the years of its first eight games in the dome, and now it’s back. Can there be enough energy? Can the home surrounding carry the struggling team through the problems on both lines and with a lack of passing punch lately?

No.

Florida State is too balanced, the passing game has been too sharp, and the defensive front will take over as the game goes on.
