NFL Draft Best Picks of All-Time From Every ACC School

Who are the ACC’s greatest NFL Draft picks of all-time? Here are the top three best picks from each ACC program.

Who are the best NFL Draft picks from every ACC program? Which players turned into the greatest stars at the next level?

The ACC takes a backseat to no one when it comes to NFL draft bragging rights from its current programs.

The bulk players might not be there like it is from the SEC and the Big Ten, but you want high-end talent?

From Dan Marino to Jim Brown, and from Lawrence Taylor to Derrick Brooks to Aaron Donald, there’s a lot for the ACC to chirp about.

This isn’t a list of the top pro players to come from the ACC schools – these are the best draft picks.

Players who had great careers for teams other than the ones that drafted them don’t get enough credit, or aren’t on the list at all.

The goal for any draft pick is to get a player who performs at a high level for a long period of time, so longevity matters over one short burst of greatness.

It’s going to be one of the craziest offseasons yet with the transfer portal, a whole lot of big transitions, and several key teams needing to do a whole lot of work.

Before diving into the nuts and bolts of each team with our team-by-team Preview 2022, here’s the spring version quick look, prediction, and ranking of each ACC team.

Don’t get into any sort of a twist with these ACC rankings – you could take about ten of the teams, mix them up in any order, and you’ll probably be right.

Seriously, if you want to swap 11 and 12 on this with, say, 4 and 5, go for it – that’s how even this league should be. If you thought last year was weird in the conference, just wait.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

Florida State vs Syracuse Game Preview, ACC Tournament

Why Florida State Will Win

The Seminoles have picked a nice time to start playing well.

it was a rough run over the second half of the season going 1-8, but they came up with a stunner over Virginia and took out Notre Dame and NC State to come into this relatively hot.

What is it doing right? It’s making its shots. That’s not a given for an offense that struggled to get to 40% on a regular basis for weeks.

On the flip side, the Syracuse defense has fallen off the map. It can always step it up now that the ACC Tournament lights are on – it’s Syracuse – but it’s getting roadside lately allowing teams to hit half of their shots over the last four games.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Syracuse Will Win

The Orange are scoring.

The defense has been uncharacteristically bad lately, but the offense has been good from three, the team’s been strong from the free throw line, and there’s a decent burst from time to time.

There aren’t a lot of mistakes and there won’t be too many easy Florida State points, and that might mean everything – there can’t be any empty trips. The offense has to come through and keep pushing because …

Florida State vs Syracuse: What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, the Syracuse defense – it’s just not getting it done.

It doesn’t hack away and there aren’t a lot of fouls, but it’s not coming up with turnovers and it’s not as good on the boards as it needs to be.

Again, it’s Syracuse, so there’s always the shot at going on an out-of-the-blue run this weekend, but Florida State is playing too well and it’s too strong at moving the ball around to get sucked into the positives of the Orange defensive style.

Duke vs Syracuse Game Preview

Why Duke Will Win

It’s been a rocky ride, and it’s had to take a few punches, but Duke keeps on winning with a five-game run after losing to Virginia and is on a nice streak of ten wins in the last 11 games.

The run started with a strong 79-59 victory over Syracuse.

The Blue Devils might not be winning in consistent ways, but they’ve been rock-solid from the field and good enough from three. Throw in the rebounding to go along with lots and lots of assists, and the offense is the exact right fit to push past what Syracuse does.

The Orange might bring a whole lot of pressure, but Duke came up with 25 assists in the first meeting.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Syracuse Will Win

The loss to Duke was on the road. Syracuse is a whole other animal in the dome.

There are a few losses here and there, but ever since dropping the home date Florida State in mid-January, the Orange have own five straight at home averaging well over 80 points per game.

Granted, it hasn’t played anyone like Duke in the run, but the offense has been brilliant from three in the home surroundings, the defense has cranked things up a few notches, and …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

The Syracuse defense isn’t working, and it’s not going to come up with the stop needed in the clutch against the high-powered Duke attack.

The Orange allow teams to do way too much on the move and they struggle when they don’t win the rebounding battle.

It’ll be a battle for the Blue Devils, but when they need points late, they’ll be ultra-focused and come up with the pass and the big play needed to get out alive.

Syracuse football schedule 2022: Who does Syracuse miss on the ACC schedule and what are 3 things to know?

2022 College Football Schedules: All 130 Teams

Syracuse Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Orange miss from the Coastal Division?

The Orange miss Duke and Georgia Tech, but they also miss Miami, North Carolina, and Virginia Tech.

That means they get Pitt, and worse than facing the defending ACC Champion is that it’s on the road after dealing with at Clemson and Notre Dame. Almost as bad is dealing with Virginia on a Friday night six days after facing Purdue.

From the Atlantic, Syracuse has to go on the road to face Clemson and Wake Forest, but NC State and Louisville are home games.

Syracuse Football Schedule What To Know: The first half is all about home, but the second half …

It’s an insane imbalance to deal with. Five of the first six games are at home with the lone road game at UConn, but the second half drops like a ton of bricks.

Four of the last six games are on the road, and none of the four are sure-thing wins – Clemson, Pitt, Wake Forest, Boston College. Making tings worse are the two home games against Notre Dame and Florida State.

Syracuse Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Syracuse has to dominate the home games and needs get off to a hot start, or else. UConn and Wagner are wins, but the non-conference dates with Purdue and Notre Dame – even at home – are an issue.

At best, Syracuse will likely be the favorite no more than four times, and that’s being generous.

No kidding around here.

These are the big games we’ve all been waiting for. This is the weekend that sets us up for Championship Week, and it’s when the biggest of the big rivalry games kick in.

No, I’m not touching the SEC showdowns – there’s too much happening with all of them. I will admit to liking Georgia Tech +35 over Georgia, but that’s too dangerous.

I will also admit to digging Auburn getting 20.5 at home against an Alabama team that has a bad habit of taking long naps, but again, that’s too volatile.

As I warned with the 5 Best Predictions piece for Friday, this is the toughest weekend of the year because it’s impossible to factor in the role desperation plays, especially when teams have no (bleeps) to give.

How long will coaches keep in their star players when the championship game next week means everything? How will players play and coaches coach when they know that this could be the last game of the season?

Flaky things happen on the last normal weekend of the regular season – like USF vs UCF yesterday, and don’t start on Nebraska and Iowa – so the idea here is to go mostly go with big games were both teams have something equally massive to lose

But I start and finish with two games that are all about the favorites and their attitudes, starting the 5 Best College Football Predictions for Rivalry Week Saturday with …

5. Pitt at Syracuse

LINE Pitt -13
ATS PICK Syracuse

The doesn’t-matter theory worked on Friday taking Colorado -23.5 against Utah.

Ute head coach Kyle Whittingham inexplicably kept too many star players in for too long, but however it worked, it worked.

Utah didn’t need the win. It was already off to the Pac-12 Championship, the game had no playoff or bowl implications, and if anything, the last thing the team needed was to get banged up in any way.

Also, it wasn’t going to bring the high-end intensity and wasn’t going to open up the playbook considering the game that matters is a few days away.

It’s the exact same deal with Pitt and Syracuse, only better for the underdog. Utah was playing at home on Senior Day. Pitt is on the road.

The Panthers don’t need to do anything with this game. They’re off to the ACC Championship, and playing all of their backups and losing by 50 wouldn’t change a thing.

Of course, that’s not how football coaches think – they’re all about momentum, and players play, and blah blah blah. However, there will come a point when the Pitt coaching staff realizes it really doesn’t want QB Kenny Pickett getting blasted.

Even if everything was normal, Syracuse – even though the production has fallen off the map over the last few weeks – would be a good play, Throw in that it’s 5-6 and needs to win this to go bowling, and Pitt doesn’t need this at all, and it’s Senior Day, and the Orange running game is still good, and …

This isn’t a bad straight up play, much less with the 13.

Pitt vs Syracuse Game Preview

Why Pitt Will Win

The Syracuse running game has hit a bit of a wall.

There’s no passing game whatsoever with Garrett Shrader at quarterback, but star RB Sean Tucker keeps on rumbling – it’s not enough. The Orange have amassed just 420 yards of total offense over the last two games – road losses to Louisville and NC State – and the defense isn’t picking up the slack.

The Cardinals scored 41, the Wolfpack scored 41, and now the Orange D has to deal with the second-best offense in college football behind Ohio State. But that’s not the real issue.

The Panther defense continues to be amazing at getting into the backfield, the run D is allowing fewer than 100 yards per game, and the entire formula should equal a blowout win over a tam that’s flailing at the exact worst time.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Syracuse Will Win

Pitt doesn’t need this game at all.

It already has the Coastal Division wrapped up and is off to the ACC Championship next week, and the last thing it wants to do is tax itself or put any key parts at risk.

The team will go through the motion and will want to win to keep the winning momentum going, but again, there’s no point in doing anything but use this game as a chance for the reserves to get in some good work.

Even with the starters in, it’s not like the offense is going to show anything funky or risk getting star QB Kenny Pickett popped or banged up in any way.

On the flip side, Syracuse needs this to go bowling.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

A bad 2019 Syracuse team ended the season with a thrilling win over Wake Forest. The 2018 team close out string with a regular season finale win over Boston College.

The defense might have crashed, and the offense has lost its mojo, but back at home in the dome and with the season on the line – and again, with nothing for Pitt to play for other than pride – the Orange will push ahead and pull this off.

If Pitt needed this in any way it would be a blowout for the best team in the ACC. In this, the Panthers will – and should – be more interested in how the Atlantic Division race played out to know what to prepare for.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Syracuse vs NC State Game Preview

Why Syracuse Will Win

Can the running game get its groove back?

It was rumbling right along with star RB Sean Tucker and QB Garrett Shrader going off – the Orange lead the ACC in rushing with 237 yards per game – and then came last week against Louisville.

The Orange threw for 46 yards, the running game couldn’t do anything other than get Tucker going a bit, and everything crashed in a 41-3 loss.

The ground attack has to take over, the defensive front has to keep on being a bother in the backfield with its great pass rush, and the D overall has to keep the mediocre NC State running game from rolling.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why NC State Will Win

The NC State run defense has been fantastic.

It’s the best in the ACC allowing just over three yards per carry and gave up just one score before allowing one to Florida State and three to Wake Forest over the last two games.

No one other than Louisville has been able to run for more than 140 yards and average more than five yards per pop against the Wolfpack defense that’s amazing on third downs, is decent at taking the ball away, and should hold up against the one-dimensional Orange O.

And …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Devin Leary keeps on playing like he belongs in the conversation of the ACC’s top quarterbacks – yes, even with Kenny Pickett and Sam Howell.

He’s coming off a 408-yard day against Wake Forest, he threw four touchdown passes in each of his last three games, and over 300 yards in each of his last four, and …

The NC State run defense will take care of this.
