Ohio State women’s ice hockey to play for national title

Three years in a row! #GoBucks

The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team will be playing for a national title for the third consecutive time courtesy of a 4-1 win over Clarkson on Friday night.

Clarkson actually got on the board first early in the first period with at the 17:35 mark, making it a needed comeback story for the Scarlet and Gray. Things stayed close, with OSU equalizing at later in the period to make it 1-1 on a Makenna Webster goal.

Things would stay that way through the second period and on into the last stanza, with the Buckeyes getting the all-important go-ahead goal from Sloane Matthews with just 6:48 to play. From there, it seemed like it was survive and advance.

However, Joy Dunne added a goal as a power play expired to give Ohio State a 3-1 lead with just 3:23 left after a barrage of attempts on the man advantage. Hadley Harmetz would add an empty-netter to completely seal the deal with 1:54 to play and OSU would be on its way.

It’ll be a familiar opponent for Ohio State. The Buckeyes lost to Wisconsin, 1-0, in the national championship game last season and will be looking to get back at the Badgers who will be opposite OSU on Sunday night for all the confetti.

Wisconsin is the No. 2 seed, with Ohio State holding the No. 1 seed. The two have played five times this season with the Buckeyes holding a 3-2 advantage, but having lost the last two games against Bucky.

Game on.

Wisconsin looking to take next step in early Big Ten football power rankings reveal

In year two under Luke Fickell, the Wisconsin Badgers are looking to take a big jump in the new look Big Ten conference.

It’s never too early for a “way too early” Big Ten power ranking! Things will change. Players will hurt the portal, players will transfer in, injuries will happen but for the most part, we have a pretty good understanding of rosters after National Signing Day and so much transfer portal movement.

In each part of this series, we will unveil where each of the 18 teams in the new look conference begins. We started at No. 1 with the revamped Ohio State Buckeyes. Then, the Oregon Ducks come in at the second spot. Coming in at No. 3 were the defending National Champion Michigan Wolverines, who are in a bit of a transition period.

At No. 4, we unveiled the Penn State Nittany Lions, who are returning a lot of talent from their 2023 roster. Then we made way for the old reliable, the Iowa Hawkeyes. At No. 6, another new addition to the conference, the USC Trojans. Next up at No. 7, the Wisconsin Badgers.

In the first year under new head coach Luke Fickell, you saw a lot of positive signs of growth. The offense under Phil Longo took on an identity shift. The Badgers had traditionally been a heavy power run scheme but the objective was to get more balanced, and the passing attack going. They brought in former Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke this offseason, with hopes of reviving his once promising career. He has their top pass catcher returner in Will Pauling returning, which will be big for the passing attack.

The offensive line for Wisconsin should be one of the best returning units nationally. Jack Nelson and Riley Mahlman return at offensive tackle, which is one of the better duos anywhere. Add in Jake Renfro and Joe Huber together and you have a potentially excellent unit.

On defense, Wisconsin should be a good overall unit, which is usually the case. Mike Tressel has a couple standouts on all three levels, including linebacker Jaheim Thomas that spent some time with Coach Fickell while he was still at Cincinnati.

Ohio State drops yet another game on the road, this time against Wisconsin

Hang another road L up.

At this point, you have to wonder if the Ohio State basketball team will ever win another game on the road. Of course, the Buckeyes will, but it’s not a stretch to think that it could bleed into the next season at this point after another road loss, this time to Wisconsin in Madison by a score of 62-54 in a game OSU never led.

If it weren’t for a poor, poor end to the first half, the Buckeyes could have very easily handed the Badgers their fifth-straight loss. As it was, the Badgers went on a massive 14-1 run to end the first 20 minutes to head into the locker room up 34-21.

And while OSU came out and cut the lead to five points deep into the second half, it was again too little, too late for yet another loss in a season that is quickly melting away after such a promising start. Ohio State shot just 41.1% from the field and shot just two free throws all game, making just one. The Buckeyes also got outrebounded 38-26.

Bruce Thornton led the Buckeyes with 18 points, but it came on 8-of-19 shots, a continued volume scoring effort without high-percentage chances, something this Ohio State team seems to continue to try and feast on.

With the loss, OSU drops to 14-11 overall and 4-10 in the conference. Chris Holtmann’s days are most likely numbered.

Wisconsin gets new transfer quarterback in Tyler Van Dyke

The three-year starter at Miami will join Luke Fickell with the Badgers for his final year of eligibility.

Wisconsin has found its quarterback for 2024 after former Miami passer Tyler Van Dyke announced his commitment to the Badgers on Tuesday.

Van Dyke is among the most experienced quarterbacks in the portal. He started for three years with the Hurricanes, with 7,478 career passing yards and 54 passing touchdowns. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

The veteran’s best year came as a sophomore in 2021 when he threw for 2,931 yards and 25 touchdowns against just six interceptions. The 6-foot-4 passer got first-round buzz after that first full season at the helm, but he hasn’t quite recaptured those peaks. He only threw 10 touchdowns in nine games as a junior in 2022.

This past season, Van Dyke flashed his potential again with 10 touchdowns and just a single interception in his first four games, including a four-touchdown performance against Texas A&M. He threw 10 interceptions in his next four games to briefly lose the starting role to freshman Emory Williams, but he returned after Williams suffered an arm injury against Florida State.

Wisconsin finished 7-5 in head coach Luke Fickell’s first full season despite 11 passing touchdowns on 429 team attempts. The Badgers’ 5.8 yards per attempt last season was tied for the seventh-worst mark in the FBS. Despite freshman Braedyn Locke getting work late in the season, it’s safe to assume Fickell will roll with Van Dyke’s experience to add another dimension to the Wisconsin offense.

Ohio State offensive player-by-player PFF grades for Wisconsin game

We go through the PFF grades for Ohio State on the offensive side of the ball for the win over Wisconsin. #GoBucks

Ohio State moved to 8-0 on the season with its 24-10 win over Wisconsin on Saturday night.

The offensive performance drew criticism from fans as the Buckeyes struggled to finish drives and turned the ball over three times. However, on the back of another strong performance from the defense they did enough to pick up the victory.

Marvin Harrison Jr. showed yet again why he’s one of the best players in college football as he went over 100 yards for the fourth straight game and sixth time this season.

Treveyon Henderson returned after missing the last three games with injury and was one of the stars of the game as he rushed for 162 yards and added 45 yards receiving the ball out of the backfield.

We break down each offensive position group’s performance using Pro Football Focus grades for each player. Though not the ultimate measuring stick, PFF is a good tool because it grades every player on every play.

Pictures of Ohio State football’s victory over Wisconsin in Madison

The Ohio State football team remained undefeated in a rough and tumble game at Wisconsin. Here are some photos to re-live the win Saturday.

It was a dogfight to be sure, but the Ohio State football team was able to notch another battle-tested victory into its belt to remain undefeated on the season at 8-0 overall, and 5-0 in Big Ten play.

The game was tight all the way into the later stages of the fourth quarter, but thanks to the continued relentlessness of the defense and the heroics of running back TreVeyon Henderson and wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., the Buckeyes came away victorious, 24-10 over the Wisconsin Badgers.

As always, we have access to some high-resolution photos of all the action in Madison on Saturday night and are sharing some of the best of the eye candy with you to remember the win by.

There was a lot of red in the stands, but the only one that mattered on Saturday night was of the scarlet variety. Here are some of the best photos of another win for THE Ohio State Buckeyes.

Ryan Day discusses win over Wisconsin Saturday night

Ryan Day spoke to the media following Ohio State’s 24-10 win over Wisconsin Saturday night. See what he had to say about his team’s performance. #GoBucks

Notch another tough win into the good side of the win/loss column for Ohio State after a battle in Madison against the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday night.

Undeniably, there’s still frustrations on finishing drives on offense, but Marvin Harrison Jr. and running back TreVeyon Henderson starred in a duo that accounted for much of the Buckeyes offense, enough to gut out a 24-10 win in hostile territory.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day met with the media after the game to discuss what he saw from his team. He was happy about the win but wanted more from his team.

Thanks to the NBC4 YouTube channel, we have the entire press conference for you to take in. Day discussed the play of the defense, the difference of having Henderson in the lineup, the improvement needed on offense and much more.

Ohio State is 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes will stay on the road next week to visit a Rutgers team that could make the game more interesting than what we’ve seen in recent years.

We will, of course, have plenty of coverage leading up to Saturday, so check back often throughout the week for more content, reaction, and analysis here at Buckeyes Wire.

WATCH: What Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell said about Ohio State after the game

Watch and listen to what Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell said about Ohio State after the loss to the Buckeyes. #GoBucks

It was another donnybrook in the Big Ten for the Ohio State football team. The Buckeyes traveled to Madison and found a way to win a tight, physical match for the second straight week and remain unbeaten and en route to what they hope are some pretty big things down the line.

The opponent this time was led by a former Buckeye himself, Wisconsin head coach, Luke Fickell, and he and his staff put together a game plan that had the game in doubt all the way to the back end of the fourth quarter.

Fickell may have scarlet and gray in his blood, but there’s no doubt he is all in on Wisconsin these days and felt the gut punch of an effort that fell just a little short on Saturday night.

He met with the media in Madison after the game to discuss what he saw from Ohio State and his team, and we have the entire press conference for you thanks to the Wisconsin Badgers YouTube channel.

In it, you can hear Fickell talk about the playmakers Ohio State has, the challenge of going against the OSU defense, how tough it was to fall short and more.

Ohio State will now prepare to go on the road once again next week when it travels to Piscataway, New Jersey, to take on a Rutgers team that has been much more competitive than in year’s past.

We’ll have plenty of coverage leading up to the game this upcoming week so be sure to stop by Buckeyes Wire and check in often.
