Houston vs UConn Game Preview

Why Houston Will Win

Get this over with very, very quickly.

The Cougars have to use this as a chance to get the backups tuned up for the future and can’t be stressed too much with the American Athletic Conference championship against Cincinnati up next. Win that, and at 12-1 they’d be the conference champs and, most likely, would be in the a New Year’s Six game.

But first they have to get by UConn.

The Huskies have the least-efficient passing game in college football, they don’t move the chains at all, and they can’t score. They haven’t hit more than 13 points against anyone but Yale in the last five games.

Houston’s defense might not let UConn convert one third down try.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why UConn Will Win

Houston will be about as unfocused as a team can get.

This game doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. Cincinnati got its game with East Carolina over with on Friday and has an extra day to rest up and prepare. Houston head coach Dana Holgorsen would love to give his team that break as soon as possible.

The Houston offensive front has been shaky in pass protection, there have been defensive lapses – like in shootouts against USF and SMU – and then there’s the weather.

It’s going to be in the 30s at game time. It’s not exactly balmy in Houston right now, but 25 degrees colder to this team will matter a bit.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Houston will get up fast with touchdowns on its first three drives. UConn will put together one good scoring drive of its own, but that won’t be nearly enough to keep up.

Holgorsen will get his backups in the game as soon as humanly possible and won’t show Cincinnati anything it can use.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

UCF vs UConn Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

The UCF offense is fine, but it’s hardly the high-flying fun show we’re all used to with this program.

The team is finding ways to stay alive and come up with a decent season despite losing QB Dillon Gabriel early on, but it’s a struggle for this group to put big points on the board. UConn’s defense hasn’t been totally awful on third downs, and it’s been able to pick off a few passes here and there.

The Huskies have to hope UCF is off, and they need their own passing game to be great like it was against Vanderbilt and Middle Tennessee. But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why UCF Will Win

UConn just doesn’t score.

It managed 13 points or fewer in three of the last four games, and that fourth game was a 21-15 win over Yale.

No, UCF isn’t putting up points in bunches unless it’s playing Temple, but it doesn’t have to be crazy. It can run the ball as much as it wants to against the UConn defensive front, and field position shouldn’t be a problem against an offense that’s the worst in the country on third downs.

It’s going to want to put this game away fast with the rivalry date against USF coming up in short week, and …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

UCF will score on its first two drives and the defense will take care of the rest.

UConn will come up with a few nice chances, and they won’t work. The UCF defense will be fired up to come up with something big after getting hit by SMU for 55 last week.

Clemson vs UConn Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

It’s not like the Clemson offense is working now that it scored 30 points in back-to-back games.

First, as too many people in the investment world painfully know, the O didn’t get the Tigers up to 30 against Florida State, and there were only 345 yards of total offense against Louisville last week.
UConn isn’t going to score a ton on this Clemson defense, but it hasn’t been bad against the run and it’s been able to hang around here and there throughout the year.

And for what it’s worth, there’s a rest factor. The Huskies haven’t played in almost three weeks, all while Clemson is looking at this as a scrimmage before dealing with Wake Forest. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Clemson Will Win

For all of Clemson’s problems, a ten-win season is still in the picture. Beating Wake Forest next week would be huge, taking down South Carolina on the road would be massive, and there’s going to be a bowl game.

To do that, the offense still needs a whole lot of work, and that’s what UConn is for. This isn’t going to be a game the Tigers are going to take lightly.

This is the game to get the passing attack going. It’s been brutally inconsistent without enough of a downfield presence, the this is why you pay a team like this to come to your house. You try cranking it up a bit to get ready for the two big games that do matter.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Jim Mora Jr. isn’t able to do anything with UConn quite yet.

Yeah, Clemson has finally been able to get to 30 points against an FBS team and did it in back-to-back weeks.

UConn would kill to get there – it hasn’t scored more than 28.

Purdue beat the Huskies 49-0, but Vanderbilt had to fight to get out with a 30-28 win. Clemson’s performance will be somewhere in between.

There won’t be any danger, but this isn’t going to be totally smooth. The O will open it up enough to put this away fast, and the D won’t allow much of anything outside of a random score.

Middle Tennessee vs UConn Game Preview

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

The offense is inconsistent, the defense is spotty, and the team is having a hard time coming up with the big offensive plays at the right times, and …

Takeaways, takeaways, takeaways. They keep on coming.

The Blue Raiders lead the nation in turnover margin and are second behind Iowa with 17 takeaways on the year. They generated six in the shocking win over Marshall, and followed it up with three in last week’s blowout loss to Liberty.

UConn doesn’t have a massive turnover issue, but it gave it up three times in the loss to UMass, four times in the loss to Holy Cross, and it’s going to force things to try to stay in the game, but …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UConn Will Win

Middle Tennessee isn’t getting good enough players from the lines.

The running game is sputtering – to be kind – the run defense isn’t good enough, and while there’s just enough pressure being generated to force mistakes, the secondary is still getting hit way too hard.

UConn has hardly been ale to crank up the offensive production, but it came brutally close to beating Vanderbilt and Wyoming, lost to UMass mainly because the team had covid issues, and it’s coming off a win over Yale.

The team is finding ways to stay in games, but …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Middle Tennessee’s offense take over with a little help from the other side.

Give UConn credit. The defense has tightened up in a big way over the last month, but Blue Raider Chase Cunningham isn’t making a whole lot of big mistakes, the passing game should click early on, and the O will take advantage of three UConn turnovers to pull away as the game goes on.

UConn vs Yale Game Preview

Why Yale Will Win

Yeah, head coach Lou Spanos and a few assistant coaches, but things really aren’t going well if you lose to UMass 27-13.

Yale is only 2-2 with a few tight losses, but it’s got the best D in the FCS at coming up with third down stops, and UConn is only converting at a 26% clip. The offensive line is excellent in pass protection for an attack that doesn’t turn the ball over.

UConn’s offensive line can’t get the ground game going for an O that’s given the ball away 13 times so far.

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UConn Will Win

The Huskies have been knocking on that door.

They pushed Wyoming, they lost in a heartbreaker to Vanderbilt, and it all looked like it was about to kick in when the Covid problems hit the coaching staff and the team was an inexplicable -3 in turnover margin against UMass.

For all of the great things the Yale defense does, it doesn’t force takeaways. The offensive side doesn’t have a ton of downfield pop – it’s not great on third downs – and the UConn D should …

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The UConn D is going to have problems.

Yale’s offense should be able to run well enough to control the game from the start as the Huskies suffer yet another tough, close loss with several missed opportunities being the storyline.

For the seventh time in eight games this year, UConn will fail to hit 300 yards of total offense.

UConn vs UMass Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

UConn’s offense works a wee bit and the UMass attack doesn’t.

It’s been a long, long time since the Huskies have beaten an FBS team – 2018 – but the passing game hit Vanderbilt for 331 yards in last week’s heartbreaking loss, the running game has at least hit 100 yards in each of the last four games, and the team has a few playmakers to produce against the nation’s worst scoring defense and second-worst overall D.

UMass is bad against the pass, worse against the run, and the offense isn’t able to keep up with anyone. However …

Week 6 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UMass Will Win

It’s not like UConn is a high-octane fun show.

The offense is slightly functional, but it’s not going to come out and hang 28 on the board in the first quarter. It has a wildly inefficient passing attack, the offense as a whole is only averaging 270 yards per game, and the defense isn’t able to do much of anything on third downs to get off the field.

The UMass offensive line is playing reasonably well when it comes to keeping defenses out of the backfield and there’s a decent return game, but …

Week 6 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

UConn has been competitive and UMass hasn’t been.

The big problem – in the real world more than for something silly like football – is the absence of UConn head coach Lou Spanos and two other coaches with covid problems. Even so, the Huskies have more on offense and the D will be just a wee bit better.

Vanderbilt vs UConn Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

They’re starting to play better.

The Huskies might be 0-5 and some of the positives still might not be close to good enough, but the 281 yards of total offense in the 24-22 loss to Wyoming was a season high.

At the very least, they’re not getting flagged with a whole slew of bad penalties, the offensive line hasn’t been totally awful at keeping defensives out of the backfield, and freshman QB Tyler Phommachanh is going to get time to start growing into the job.

And on the other side, it’s Vanderbilt. It’s not going to go off offensively, but …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

The Commodores might have struggled against Georgia – everyone will – but the running game wasn’t bad against Stanford and the passing attack wasn’t bad in the first two games.

There’s bad, and there’s UConn-level lousy when it comes to total offense. Vanderbilt’s defense should catch a break for the first time since the loss to East Tennessee State, but this should be easier than the opener.

Vandy should be able to do a decent job on the offensive front and should be strong defensively on third downs.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

UConn is taking baby steps to improve, but Vanderbilt will finally get a decent game.

The Commodore defense will hold up early, the offense will come up with a few early scoring drives, and it’ll be a grind to land the plane. There won’t be anything pretty about it, but at this point, starting 2-3 is all about how the record looks.

Wyoming vs UConn Game Preview

Why Wyoming Will Win

Wyoming appears to be tired of not doing that whole offense thing.

Under head coach Craig Bohl, for the most part, the offense was along for the ride while the defense took control of games.

It’s not that way anymore.

The Cowboys have exploded – at least for them – with a real, live passing game to go along with a dangerous ground attack to balance things out. All the O has to do is be okay, and that’s what it is this season.

The D is having problems on third downs, but it’s taking the ball away a whole lot, the offense capitalizes on the mistakes, and over the last two weeks, the big numbers are coming.

UConn doesn’t have the ability to keep up if it starts giving the ball away.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why UConn Will Win

The offense at least put up some points late against Army. It didn’t matter to the game itself in the 52-21 loss, but it was a big deal to some.

The team keeps on pushing, even when it’s a lost cause.

The Huskies are trying salvage something positive out of a disastrous start. They have to find something they can rely on.

Wyoming’s defense has been uncharacteristically soft at times on the ground, the Cowboy offense isn’t that great at getting the passing game going, and the Huskies should keep pressing for a full 60 minutes.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Nothing is working for UConn.

The passing game is among the least efficient in the nation, the pass defense is the worst in college football in efficiency, and there’s nothing happening down the field.

The Cowboy defense will look the part this week, the offense will capitalize on three takeaways, and the momentum of both teams will keep on rolling.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Army (2-0) vs UConn (0-3) Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

So is ANYTHING working here?

UConn started out the season getting rocked, the Randy Edsall era was over, and it responded by being nothing more than a light snack for Purdue in a 49-0 loss last week.

There’s a running game hidden among the problems, but it hasn’t emerged yet. No one has been able to get going, and Kevin Mensah has been bottled up from the start, but the Huskies have enough decent options to try pounding away.

The one plus is the ability to get behind the line. The defense isn’t bad at generating tackles for loss – seven per game – but …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Army Will Win

UConn is having issues against the run. That’s not a positive against Army.

Even with the ability to get into the backfield from time to time, the defensive front isn’t holding up against anyone who’s trying to run. It’s not getting totally destroyed – allowing 4.3 yards per carry – but that’s partly because the first three teams on the slate spent too much time throwing.

Army is totally on its game, tearing through Georgia State and WKU for a total of 600 yards and eight scores in the first two outings. Inside and out, the option is dominating.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not just the running game for Army. The defense is holding up, doing just enough to survive the new and improved WKU passing game helped by the O holding the ball for almost 40 minutes a game.

Army will run for well over 300 yards, the defense will be far better on third downs than it was last week against the Hilltoppers, and the great season marches on.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Purdue (1-0) vs UConn (0-2) Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

At least there’s a bit of a new direction.

It’s been a rough several years for UConn football with no production, a move into the world of the independents, and no season in 2020. Instead of coming out roaring, the Huskies got rocked in their first two games, with an embarrassing 38-28 loss to Holy Cross last week.

Head coach Randy Edsall was going to step down at the end of the season, but he’s doing it now with defensive coordinator Lou Spanos taking over.

This really might be in the mix for the worst team in the country debate, but but the Huskies do have parts.

Kevin Mensah is a solid back who just needs a little room to move, a few receivers can make plays if they get the ball in their hands, and Omar Fortt is a terrific linebacker who leads a group that can get behind the line.

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why Purdue Will Win

Purdue has to simply maintain its focus and use this as the chance to get the O going like it’s supposed to.

The team came up with a solid 30-21 win over Oregon State to open the season with Jack Plummer throwing for over 300 yards with two scores and no turnovers, but the running game didn’t work.

It’s Purdue, so it’s about the passing game – the receiving corps should be the best yet in the Jeff Brohm era – but this week the ground game eats. The Boilermakers should be able to move the chains however they want to.

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Again, it’s about focus. The Boilermakers had a good game to start, and next week it has a trip to Notre Dame. This is the week to get the pass rush going, find a running game, and get Plummer more live reps to get ready for what’s coming.

UConn is going to just try to keep going forward and find something that it can build on. Just getting a few points against a Power Five team would be a start.
