Giants offseason bookkeeping: 3 contracts voided, bonuses coming due

The New York Giants had three contracts voided in the days after the Super Bowl, while other player bonuses are soon coming due.

As free agency approaches in a month, the New York Giants have other administrative things to handle, like bonus payouts and other contract-related items.

On Feb. 14, the contracts of A’Shawn Robinson, Adoree’ Jackson and Tyrod Taylor were all voided.

Robinson had a so-so season — mediocre when looking at his past production. He recorded 62 tackles (34 solo), two passes defensed and 12.5 stuffs but did improve down the stretch.

Jackson was, at times, a bright spot on the defense, like when he returned an interception for a touchdown. He added 63 tackles (49 solo), a forced fumble and eight passes defensed.

Taylor’s entire career has been full of setbacks. He’s a solid quarterback, but he can’t stay healthy. Although this season it wasn’t entirely his fault — the Giants had the worst offensive line in the league. Even so, he completed over 64% of his passes for 1,341 yards and five touchdowns. He was also sacked 17 times and threw three interceptions.

All three of those players are veterans who will not have trouble finding a home. And it’s possible that they could end up back in blue, but for now, they are free agents.

In other contract news, Jamie Gillan is due a $250,000 roster bonus, and Darius Slayton is due a $2.4 million roster bonus on March 18, which is the same day Rakeem Nunes-Roches receives $2 million of his 2024 salary fully guaranteed.

Giants’ 6 biggest surprises of 2023

The New York Giants’ 2023 season wasn’t all bad. Despite the drama issues, there are six players who surprised us with their performance.

The 2023 NFL season has come to an end for the New York Giants, who finished with an ugly 6-11 record.

There’s already been a ton of upheaval across the league, and the Giants are no exception. Still, as hard as this season was to watch, it wasn’t all bad. There were some high points, including a handful of wins under a third-string quarterback.

That’s not the only highlight of the season. Despite the turmoil in the front office, there are players on both sides of the ball who surprised us with their performance on the field.

Giants’ Jamie Gillan named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week

New York Giants punter Jamie Gillan has been named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his Week 18 performance against the Eagles.

New York Giants punter Jamie Gillan capped off his impressive season — one that should have ended with a Pro Bowl nod — in award-winning fashion.

On Wednesday, Gillan was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his Week 18 performance against the Philadelphia Eagles.

In a dominating 27-10 victory over their NFC East rivals, Gillan punted five times for 228 yards, averaging 45.6 yards per boot and dropping four inside of the 20-yard line (one inside the 10-yard line). Gillan also had a long of 55 yards.

Gillan being named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week comes one week after Giants return man Gunner Olszewski received the same honor. They are the first pair of special teams teammates to win the award back-to-back since Nick Folk and, ironically, Olszewski did it as members of the New England Patriots in 2020.

After a rough first season with the Giants, Gillan rebounded to post career highs with 95 punts, 35 punts inside the 20, and a 42.3-yard net average.

The 42.3 average is an all-time Giants franchise record.

Gillan credited his sudden resurgence to special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey prior to the Week 18 game.

“He has helped me with his experience and allowed me to be me. I love that guy,” Gillan said, via the New York Daily News.

Unfortunately for Gillan, his breakout season wasn’t enough to save McGaughey, who was fired by head coach Brian Daboll on Monday morning.

Giants report card: How we graded Big Blue in Week 18 win

The New York Giants defeated the Philadelphia Eagles, 27-10, in Week 18 and the Giants Wire team grades reflect that performance.

The New York Giants defeated the Philadelphia Eagles, 27-10, to leave a bad taste in their mouth as they head into the playoffs.

The Giants had a wire-to-wire win in Week 18 as they ended their five-game losing streak against the Eagles. Even at home, the Giants came into this game as pretty heavy underdogs but the team proved the doubters wrong going up 24-0 by the halftime break.

With the win the Giants end the season with a 6-11 record and 3-3 record in the division. New York now owns the sixth overall pick and has a lot to think about this offseason. For now, they are happy to spoil the end of Philadelphia’s season.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what we saw during the game and how we graded the Giants in this win.

5 Giants were snubbed from the 2024 Pro Bowl Games

New York Giants NT Dexter Lawrence is headed to the 2024 Pro Bowl Games but five of his teammates were arguably snubbed.

The rosters for the 2024 Pro Bowl Games were announced on Wednesday and only one New York Giants player made the list.

For the second season in a row, defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence was honored as a member of the NFC squad.

There were other Giants, however, who were under consideration that did not make the list.

Here are four players who just missed the honor this season.

Giants report card: How we graded Big Blue in Week 17 loss

The New York Giants fell to the Los Angeles Rams, 26-25, in Week 17 and the Giants Wire team grades reflect that performance.

The New York Giants were defeated once again, this time on New Year’s Eve by the Los Angeles Rams, 26-25.

The Giants nearly pulled off the upset but fell short twice — once on a late two-point conversion attempt and another time on a potential game-winning field goal. The Giants now fall to 5-11 and third in the NFC East.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what we saw during the game and how we graded the Giants in this loss.

Giants carefully navigating injuries at kicker, punter

The New York Giants have been ravaged by injuries this season, including at kicker and punter, which has become problematic.

The New York Giants’ special teams have always been respectable under coordinator Thomas McGaughey.

This season, which has been one of tumult and turmoil for the Giants, the ‘teams’ as they call them, have fallen victim to the same woes that plagued the rest of the team.

Injuries among the ranks leave little for the teams to choose from come game days. The Giants lost star kicker Graham Gano to a knee injury and punter Jamie Gillan has played through groin and knee ailments of his own. The return and coverage games have suffered from a rotating personnel as well.

McGaughey spoke about Gillan’s physical status on Thursday.

“Any time that you have to deal with those things, you just got to be smart, and communication is key,” McGaughey said. “So, we talked every day about how he was feeling and we just kind of, just went from there. You always got to be — at this time of year, you are in the back end of the season, got a lot of reps in that leg, you just got to be smart. He’s getting a little tender, so we are just trying to handle it the best way we both saw it fit and the training staff.”

The Giants have tried several kickers since Gano was placed on IR in early November, the latest being former Green Bay Packers standout Mason Crosby.

Crosby had some obvious rust in his first game last week in Philadelphia. His kickoffs were not reaching the end zone.

“It’s the first time he’s kicked off in a while,” said McGaughey. “Going in certain directions, it might not look like it, but going in certain directions, the wind was blowing a little bit. So, is Mason Crosby 23 years old? No, he’s not. He’s 38 years old, whatever it is. He’s in his 17th year in the league. That’s just what it is.

“I’m sure (quarterback) John Elway when he was 23 could throw it further than when he was 40. It’s just over time, you lose power. You lose some of that stuff. But he’s still definitely serviceable and he did a really good job for us Sunday.”

Giants injury report: Dexter Lawrence, 4 others miss practice

New York Giants coach Brian Daboll said everyone would participate on Wednesday but five players, including Sexy Dexy, ended up sitting out.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday ahead of a Week 17 game against the Los Angeles Rams at MetLife Stadium.

Because the Giants played on Christmas Day and are on a short week, head coach Brian Daboll limited the team to a walkthrough. They will conduct full practices on both Thursday and Friday.

Coming out of Monday’s game, the Giants were relatively healthy despite a few players (Darren Waller, Justin Pugh) getting banged up. Daboll said everyone would participate on at least a limited basis.

“We’re doing a walkthrough today so everybody will be participating in the walkthrough,” Daboll said.

The lie detector test determined that was a lie.

Several players sat out on Wednesday and several more were limited, including punter Jamie Gillan, who suffered a groin injury two weeks ago and a knee injury in the Giants’ loss to Philadelphia.

“We’ll see tomorrow but trending in the right direction,” Daboll said of Gillan.

The Giants’ full (projected) Wednesday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: CB Detone Banks (shoulder), TE Lawrence Cager (groin), NT Dexter Lawrence (hamstring), DT A’Shawn Robinson (back), DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches (knee)
