Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl What Happened

Clayton Tune ran, Clayton Tune connected with KeSean Carter for a 41-yard play on 1st-and-30, Clayton Tune found Nathaniel Dell for a 12-yard touchdown pass with 20 seconds remaining to close out a 92-yard drive for the game-winning score.

Louisiana got up 13-0, starting out with a four-yard touchdown catch from Johnny Lumpkin, but it could only manage three Kenneth Almendares field goals the rest of the way. Three turnovers – including one deep in Houston territory – left the door open for the Cougars, and they busted through scoring 17 unanswered points.

Both offenses were cold – literally. There were big problems in the press box – the elevator got stuck – and on the field considering Shreveport, Louisiana and the two teams weren’t used to 20-degree weather. Both teams were were intense and played hard, but the weather was a factor.

Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl Fun Stats

– Turnovers: Louisiana 3 (one came on a last gasp drive) – Houston 0. They all made a big difference.

– The teams combined to convert 6-of-25 third down tries and 6-of-8 fourth down chances.

– Houston WR KeSean Carter caught three passes for 104 yards and a score, and Nathaniel Dell – who’s going to turn pro – caught six passes for 44 yards and two scores including the game-winner.

Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl What It All Means

That game was so 2022 Houston. Underwhelm for most of the game, stay alive in key moments, and when absolutely needed, pull the game out with a one score win. It was the second year in a row QB Clayton Tune came up with a game-winning score late in a bowl game, and now the program has won two in a row after losing four straight.

It’s also a fun way to go into life in the Big 12. It might have been a relatively disappointing season overall, but the eight-win campaign made it 20 victories over the last two years after two straight losing seasons.

Louisiana had chance after chance to put the game away, and couldn’t do it. It was undermanned compared to the high-powered Cougars, but it played well to hold on time and again. Unfortunately, the drives ending in field goals instead of touchdowns – and two turnovers before the late one – left the door open.

After three double-digit win season, it was a drop-off with the program’s first losing season since 2017 and the first bowl loss after winning three straight. It was a rebuilding year under Michael Desormeaux, and it wasn’t bad, but a win in this would’ve been a big deal for the program.

Houston vs Louisiana Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl 5 Things To Know

Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

– Houston wasn’t supposed to be here. It was supposed to be this year’s Cincinnati, ripping through a not-that-bad schedule on the way to pushing for a College Football Playoff spot. That all went bye-bye early with a 2-3 start in a season that wasn’t going anywhere.

Give the team credit for roaring back, winning five of its next six before stalling in a regular season loss to Tulsa. But that’s Houston. It has the talent to hang with just about anyone, but its defense and inconsistencies are just enough to make this a toss up.

Louisiana wasn’t able to keep the fun going after head coach Billy Napier left for Florida, but the team managed to grind its way though the season and won its finale against Texas State to get bowl eligible. The offense is balanced and the defense opportunistic, but it’s going to need any aspect of the home crowd – and for Houston to be a little unfocused – to pull this off.

Napier won two straight bowl games after losing his first to Tulane in the 2018 Cure, and Michael Desormeaux was able to fill in last year and lead the way to a New Orleans win over Marshall before getting the full-time gig. At the FBS level, the Ragin’ Cajuns have been great in bowls, going 5-2 since their first appearance in 2011.

Let’s just say Houston has been a bit rocky in bowls. It shut out Navy 35-0 in the 1980 Garden State, and then it went on 5-14 run. It lost four straight after Tom Herman led the way to a New Year’s Six Peach Bowl win over Florida State, and that was it for the fun with four straight losses, including a 70-14 clunker to Army in the 2018 Armed Forces.

Just when it seemed like it was going to be business as usual last year, the Cougars came back late to beat Auburn 17-13 in the Birmingham. Head coach Dana Holgorsen could really use this as the program makes the move into the Big 12.

At least among the early bowls, it’s one of the older games with the first back in 1976 – a 20-16 McNeese State win over Tulsa. Last year’s 31-28 UAB win over BYU broke a rough run with the 2020 game canceled and the previous four all ugly after Virginia Tech and Tulsa put on a 55-52 show in 2015. There’s hope for this – Houston games aren’t boring.

CFN Bowl Expert Picks: Dec 16-19 | Dec 20-27

Why Houston Will Win The Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl

When the offense is on, look out.

It was a massive win for the team when star WR Nathaniel Dell decided to play even though he declared he was leaving for the NFL Draft. With 103 catches and 15 scores, he’s one of the most dangerous playmakers in the country, and he’s not alone.

Getting back QB Clayton Tune – at least he’s expected to go – to along with Dell all but guarantees the offensive fireworks. Last year he closed out a huge season with his late comeback drive to beat Auburn. This season he’s been a yardage machine, but that’s partly because the defense couldn’t come up with enough stops.

Louisiana can run well, but it’s nothing like the Billy Napier teams – he took some of the parts with him. The Ragin’ Cajuns might have put 41 on the board in the regular season finale win over Texas State, but they’ll have to press to keep up.

However …

Why Louisiana Will Win The Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl

The Houston defense. It’s got issues.

It comes up with a ton of sacks and lots of big plays in the backfield, but they don’t translate. It gets ripped up through the air, allows 430 yards per game overall, and it can’t come up with a third down stop.

To be fair, the penalties slowed down in the second half of the season, but there are somewhere between 7-to-10 flags coming in this at some point.

Louisiana can stay in this by keeping the mistakes to a minimum – it’s good in turnover margin – and by just hanging around. Houston has a way of taking a nap here and there during games, especially against teams that can throw.

If Chandler Fields can find any sort of a groove, he’s hitting 250 on this bunch. However …

Why Louisiana Will Win

Can the run defense hold up and can the running attack take over?

Louisiana hasn’t been the killer it was over the previous few years, but the ground game found its groove over the last several weeks with over 200 yards in three of the last four games. The offensive line is playing better, there aren’t a ton to plays allowed behind the line, and turnovers haven’t been a giant problem.

The defense mostly has issues against decent quarterbacks and passing games. It hasn’t been gouged too badly against the run, but …

Bowl Projections

Why Florida State Will Win

The Florida State running game leads the ACC averaging 214 yards per game. It’s been able to crank up over 200 yards in six games, averages 5.5 yards per carry, and it’s going along with a decent enough passing attack to balance things out.

4-0 when running for over 210 yards, the offense is going to get the backs moving – basically doing what Louisiana has done for a few years – and rip off yards in chunks.

The Louisiana run defense has been able to hold up this year, but it’s 0-4 when giving up over 140 yards. FSU has been held under that just twice.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Florida State is on a roll.

It pulled up out of its nosedive with three straight wins, the ground game has been steady, the passing game accurate, and the defense has found itself over the last three games.

Louisiana doesn’t have enough pop to keep up. It’s the first game against a Power Five team this year for the Ragin’ Cajuns, and it’s going to be rough.

Georgia Southern at Louisiana Game Preview

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

Can the Eagles get bowl eligible?

They’re one win away, and to get there they need the high-powered offense to roll with a big day from the passing game.

Not surprisingly, they’re 4-0 when they’ve had their four best offensive outputs of the season – coming up with 470 yards or more in each of the four.

They’re amazing on third downs, the offensive line has been a rock in pass protection, and there’s just enough of a ground game to even things out to go along with the Sun Belt’s best passing attack.

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Louisiana Will Win

The Louisiana pass defense hasn’t been bad.

Overall the D has been a plus, making up for a few mistakes here and there with multiple takeaways. On the secondary’s worst day of the season – allowing 320 yards to Eastern Michigan – the defense came up with five takeaways in the win.

It all comes down to mistakes for the offensive side. There’s enough of a passing game to bomb away on the struggling Eagle secondary, and getting to 500 yards is a must against the nation’s third-worst defense.

As long as the Ragin’ Cajuns win the turnover battle everything will be fine, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t give the ball away and everything will be fine for the home side.

Louisiana is 3-0 when it doesn’t turn the ball over and 1-5 when it does – Georgia Southern only come up with multiple takeaways three times.

At home, and in desperate need of pulling off a win to stay alive for a bowl game, it’ll hold up in a fun shootout.

Louisiana vs Southern Miss Game Preview

Why Louisiana Will Win

It might not be the Ragin’ Cajun team of the past few years, but this version was able to potentially save the season with solid wins over Marshall and Arkansas State.

What’s been different? The defense was a rock in both games allowing fewer than 300 yards of total offense. That, and the offense hit on the big plays down the field.

Southern Miss has a decently balanced offense, but it’s not a killer. It’s going to turn it over a few times – that’s what it does – and the D will allow at least 230 passing yards – that’s what it does.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Southern Miss Will Win

The Louisiana running game has to work.

It hit a wall against Rice and ULM and lost both game – the offense has to control the tempo, and that’s not easy to do against Southern Miss.

The Golden Eagles don’t do much in the time of possession battle, but it forces teams out of their rhythm with a strong pass rush and a whole lot of plays behind the line.

They might not crank up a ton of points, but they’re great at keeping games close and low scoring. But …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Turnovers. Southern Miss was able to overcome giving away five in the last two wins, but the offense gives it up WAY too much. Louisiana also isn’t big on the whole scoring thing, and it’s also having turnover issues lately.

At home, the Southern Miss pass rush will be just a wee bit stronger and more effective in key moments than the Louisiana version.

Arkansas State vs Louisiana Game Preview

Why Arkansas State Will Win

The Red Wolves might be struggling, but they’re getting the passing game going well enough to stay in most games.

Winning the tight battles is what it’s about, but they lost by one to Southern Miss and in a good 29-26 fight against Old Dominion.

Turnovers aren’t a problem with just four on the year and one pick, the offense knows how to control the clock, and the defense might catch a little bit of a break against a Louisiana offense that’s struggling to do much of anything to crank up the yards.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Louisiana Will Win

The Ragin’ Cajun pass rush is about to eat.

They might be having problems overall, but the defense was fantastic in the potential season-saving 23-13 win over Marshall. The offense didn’t turn the ball over – the team is 3-0 with no giveaways, 0-3 with turnovers – and the D was a rock keeping the big pass plays to a bare minimum.

But in this it’ll be about getting into the backfield against an offensive front allowing the most tackles for loss per game in the country.

The D has to pick up the O that’s having a hard time consistently putting up points. but …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Can Arkansas State get its ground game going?

The passing attack has been steadily good, but the rushing attack has been stuffed for most of the year. Louisiana struggles against the better running teams, but that’s not going to be a problem.

As long as there aren’t a slew of giveaways the home team should be fine. Arkansas State has generated just six turnovers all year.

Louisiana vs Marshall Game Preview

Why Louisiana Will Win

It’s been a grind with three straight losses after a 2-0 start, but the team had ten days off to get ready for the game that needs to get the season going.

Marshall’s offense isn’t going to go off. There’s little downfield passing game partly because the leaky offensive line isn’t giving the backfield enough time.

The Louisiana defense has to pressure Herd QB Henry Colombi, and it has to keep taking the ball away.

The offense needs as many breaks as it can get, and the Ragin’ Cajun D is helping with 14 takeaways – only USC is better than Louisiana in turnover margin.

However, lately …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Marshall Will Win

Louisiana is having a turnover problem.

The running game has to be better and the passing attack more consistent, but the mistakes – six in the last three games after not giving the ball away in the first two – are the issue. Marshall might be having its problems, but taking the ball away isn’t one of them.

The Herd have seven takeaways in the last two games and are a +6 on the season in turnover margin.

The Marshall run defense has been fantastic, it’s great at coming up with third down stops, and Louisiana is having a very, very hard time getting its D off the field.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t expect a whole lot of points.

Both teams want to control the game on the ground and rely on the defense and takeaways to pull this off. Marshall has been a bit more consistent, but it doesn’t do anything easily.

The Herd will hold up defensively against the struggling Ragin’ Cajun O, but they won’t be able to pull away. It’ll be another tough close loss for Louisiana, but it’ll make this a fight.

Louisiana vs South Alabama Game Preview

Why South Alabama Will Win

Is Louisiana sort of mediocre now?

It lost two straight on the road to Rice and ULM with the running game getting stuffed in both and the defense getting rumbled over too easily.

Is South Alabama sort of great now?

It should’ve beaten UCLA – everything went wrong late in a 32-31 loss – and it came back to roll a not-bad Louisiana Tech last week. What’s going right?

The Jaguars are doing a nice job of controlling the clock, there aren’t enough turnovers to matter, and the run defense has been a brick wall.

Again, over the last two weeks the Ragin’ Cajun ground game hasn’t done enough, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Louisiana Will Win

Louisiana is fine. It’s not the killer it’s been over the last few seasons, but it’s back home, the offensive line should be okay, and the takeaways need to come.

South Alabama might not give the ball away in bunches, but it turned it over twice against UCLA. Louisiana has only turned it over three times – the two last week against ULM were a killer – and the D has come up with 12 takeaways so far.

If they can force a few mistakes, and if the Jaguars can continue to have huge issues with penalties, that might all be just enough for Louisiana to slip on by. But …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

South Alabama is playing too well – outside of the flags.

The front should be able to hold up against the run, the offense will be balanced, and in a year when the Sun Belt is coming up with big surprises week after week, the college football world will start to pick up this might be one of the league’s stars to watch out for.

Louisiana vs ULM Game Preview

Why Louisiana Will Win

The Ragin’ Cajuns should be able to get the O going.

ULM will control the clock – that’s what it does – but the offense won’t go anywhere. Forget the 63-7 loss to Alabama, the ground game was just okay against Nicholls State and it sputtered against Texas.

Louisiana might not be the Longhorns or Tide, but they’ve been great against the run so far and should hold down the Warhawk offense that hasn’t shown much.

Flaky, the Ragin’ Cajuns were lousy against Rice but ripped through an Eastern Michigan team that whacked Arizona State. The real team should show up this week, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why ULM Will Win

Again, the competition.

Don’t judge ULM too much by the first three games – it was more than fine against Nicholls State – but it was able to keep the Texas and Alabama passing games from going off.

The Louisiana defense hasn’t been great at getting off the field, the offense has been too weird, and if it seems like it never has the ball, it’s because it won’t.

Again, ULM knows how to control games – it should have its offense on the field for more than 35 minutes.

It’s a weird game because 1) we’re not quite sure just how good ULM is – again, the schedule – 2) we’re not quite sure just how good Louisiana is – again, too flaky, and 3) the rivalry part of this should matter.

The Ragin’ Cajun lines should be able to hold up, the team will win the turnover margin, and it’ll be a good win to get over the debacle against Rice.

Louisiana vs Rice Game Preview

Why Louisiana Will Win

Don’t ask questions, just enjoy the 2-0 start.

It might not be pretty, but the Ragin’ Cajuns are producing with a good rotation at running back – four players have run for 95 yards or more in the first two games – and last week against Eastern Michigan they showed the explosion by taking a tight game and opening it up big in a 49-21 win.

Rice might have been great last week in a win over McNeese State, but the run defense is still a question and the offense has to prove it can produce against a decent D.

Louisiana has yet to turn the ball over, forced five Eastern Michigan takeaways, and …

Why Rice Will Win

Rice has been able to control the tempo and the time.

Louisiana doesn’t really care about controlling the clock – it just does what it does with the offense – but Rice tries to be deliberate. It’s holding on to the ball for over 35 minutes per game so far, and it has to do what it can to shorten the game.

The defense generated five takeaways against McNeese State, the pass rush hasn’t been bad, and the front line has to get to the Ragin’ Cajun running game before it can get started.

What’s Going To Happen

Rice is a bit better than it’s being given credit for, and the defense will be just good enough to keep this from getting out of hand.

The offense, though, won’t be able to run against the Louisiana defense allowing 2.7 yards per carry. It won’t be a breeze, but again, don’t worry about how it looks – Louisiana will take 3-0.
