Why Nebraska Will Win

The team keeps on pushing.

It might have had problems holding up against Michigan, but it gave Minnesota a rough game and had Wisconsin in big trouble last week. All were losses – the Huskers have lost five straight – but the want-to is still there thanks to an improving defense.

They allowed fewer than 370 yards in three of the last four games, and now they get an Iowa offense that desperately needs help from the defense to help with field position and potentially come up with a few scores.

For all the issues with the Huskers, the haven’t turned the ball over in either of the last two games and just once in the last three, but …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Iowa Will Win

Nebraska’s offense has stalled.

It was great this year against mediocre defenses, but Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin – all of them stuffed the Huskers allowing fewer than 270 yards in each of the four.

The running game that struggled all year has completely stalled, the passing attack can’t get to 200 yards, and Iowa’s defense isn’t the one to get healthy against.

The Hawkeyes have won four straight, they’ve taken the ball away 13 times in the last six games, and …

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Win and get in.

Iowa has had a rough year, the offense has been mocked and ridiculed, and it got ugly with a 3-4 start. However, beat Nebraska for the seventh straight time sine 2014 and go play in the Big Ten Championship for the second straight year.

Nebraska will be plucky early, and the defense will keep the Hawkeyes from going on any big marches, but the O will run into a brick wall.

The Iowa defense will be suffocating against the run, a few field goals will be enough to set the early tone, and then it’ll be on to the prep work for the Michigan-Ohio State winner.

Why Wisconsin Will Win

The Nebraska offense has stopped.

The defense has been hit-or-miss – it wasn’t bad against Minnesota and couldn’t stop Purdue or Michigan – but it struggled way too much to get the O going with fewer than 270 yards in each of the last three games.

The passing attack hasn’t hit much of anything, the ground game isn’t generating enough production, and now it all has to deal with the Wisconsin defense.

The Badgers kept Maryland and Iowa to under 190 yards each – granted, the win over the Terps was in bad weather – but this isn’t the week the Nebraska running game will find itself.

However …

Bowl Projections

Why Nebraska Will Win

It’s not like anyone is mistaking Wisconsin’s offense for Tennessee’s.

The passing attack is struggling to find anything to consistently work. Again, throw out the Maryland game – the wind was crazy – but against everyone else, the Badgers are 0-5 when they don’t connect on at least 60% of their passes.

Nothing good happens when they have to throw.

The Huskers have to get their own passing game rolling right away – just stretch the field a little bit – and on the other side they have to load up against the run. They challenged Minnesota to throw and it almost worked in the 20-13 loss.

Make Graham Mertz try to win this game and good things might happen for the home side. However …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Nebraska has only kept three teams from hitting 60% of their passes and they’re 0-6 when allowing teams to run for more than 175 yards. Wisconsin will do both.

The Badgers have been lousy on the road, but they’ll get past last week’s frustrating loss to Iowa with a balanced day from the offense and a great performance from the D.

Nebraska will have a few big offensive plays, but there won’t be enough of them in the second half.

Michigan vs Nebraska Game Preview

Why Nebraska Will Win

Very quietly, the run defense hasn’t been bad.

It held up against Illinois allowing fewer than four yards per carry, and last week it kept the game alive against Minnesota allowing 2.8 yards per carry.

Purdue was okay – it committed to the run more than it usually does – and that was the only team over the last five weeks that could hammer away. No, this isn’t a strong Nebraska defensive front overall, but he’s active and it keeps on producing.

Can the Huskers keep up the production, especially in the second half?

Michigan starts slow, and then the ground game keeps hammering until it opens up. If the Huskers can hold Michigan to around four yards per carry instead of six, this could be a fight.

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Michigan Will Win

It’s not as flashy or as fun as Tennessee, and it’s not as strong as Georgia, and it doesn’t have the skill of Ohio State, but Michigan is playing every bit as well as anyone in the country, if not better.

There aren’t any penalties. The five turnovers are nothing. The team owns third downs, the pass defense has been a rock, and the run D is No. 1 in the nation allowing just 652 yards on the year.

Nebraska hasn’t hit 170 rushing yards against any of the seven FBS teams on the slate so far, and it’s not getting there in this. Combine that with the 18 turnovers, a few too many penalties at times, and it’s not going to be sharp enough to overcome the other issues.

Even so, the Huskers will be in early, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, good luck holding up in the second half.

America starting buzzing a bit Saturday night when Rutgers was up on Michigan 17-14 at halftime.

Michigan scored 38 unanswered points to win 52-17.

Michigan State was up 7-3 in the first quarter. Michigan got the running game rolling at won 29-7.

It might take a little bit, but the Wolverines will get there. Nebraska doesn’t control the clock in any way and won’t be able to slow this down, even if the run defense fights the good fight for as long as it can.

Minnesota vs Nebraska Game Preview

Why Minnesota Will Win

As long as the running game is rumbling, everything is fine.

It’s just not that hard when it comes to this team. When it controls the line – and is healthy, unlike it was against Purdue and the backs weren’t in place – forget it.

Minnesota is 5-0 when running for over 165 yards – running for 240 yards or more in all five – and 0-3 when it doesn’t. Those three games? That Purdue outlier, the Illinois D that’s among the best in college football, and at Penn State.

How’s Nebraska’s run defense? The team is 0-5 when it doesn’t keep teams to 175 yards or fewer, and those three games were against North Dakota from the FCS, Rutgers, and an Indiana team that doesn’t really run.

Minnesota is about to pound and keep pounding.

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Nebraska Will Win

The Huskers were able to throw well against Purdue, and the defense was solid in the tough 26-9 loss to Illinois.

The fire and fight are still there, and it’s going to have to come from the ground game taking over.

Minnesota might run well, and Nebraska can’t match that yard-for-yard, but it has to get more physical than it has all year against a Minnesota defensive front that’s a tad hit-or-miss.

The stats are great overall, but the Gophers are 0-3 when allowing teams to run for 160 yards or more. That’s all about sticking with the attack, and Nebraska is able to run at least four times.

Minnesota wants to control the clock, but Nebraska has to change the narrative because …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Is Casey Thompson okay? The Nebraska quarterback has an arm injury, Chubba Purdy had to step in against Illinois and is hurt, and there’s a shot Logan Smothers has to play a role. No matter what, getting the running game going and doing anything to control the clock.

It won’t happen.

Minnesota is the best team in America at converting third down chances, it’s second-best in third down stops, and the team will always seem like it’s on the field.
