There are currently six teams that are bowl eligible but it could be up to eight if Colorado State can defeat Hawaii on the islands and if Utah State can defeat New Mexico they are going to the post season.

Both teams are favored and have a real good chance to become bowl eligible. While the Mountain West has five bowl tie-ins, there are other bowl games that have at-large options.

If the Utah State and Colorado State win there is a very good chance they will make it to the post season.

There could be as many as eight Mountain West teams that are bowl eligible. Currently, there are four teams that have six wins to get to a bowl game, and then three others that seem all but locked up with five wins.

Those teams are Boise State, Utah State, and San Jose State. Then there is Colorado State with four wins, however, the Rams get to play Nevada at home and then Hawaii on the road. Those seem like winnable games but ESPN’s Football Power Index give Colorado State just a 28.5% chance to win out.

If all eight teams do get to six wins, they will be bowling. The big question is if the Rams can join the other teams.

There is no New Year’s Six bowl bid and that likely will stick. The only team ever to get to a big time bowl game from the non-power conference was Boise State back in 2014.

In the pursuit of bowl eligibility, the Mountain West teams closely eye DraftKings Sportsbook insights. With eight potential qualifiers, attention turns to critical games for Colorado State. As the bowl lineup takes shape, the Mountain West’s affiliation adds intrigue to matchups like the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, creating anticipation for diverse postseason scenarios.

Three teams are bowl eligible

Fresno State, Air Force, and UNLV are the first three teams to become bowl eligible within the Mountain West. The Rebels are bowl eligible for the the first time since 2013 when they finished with a 6-6 regular season record and went to the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

The Wyoming Cowboys should be the next team to get to bowl eligibility. They are 5-1 but have a tough matchup this week at Boise State. The Cowboys will get there relatively soon, if not this week.

Then there are a slow of three win teams with Boise State, San Jose State, Utah State, San Diego State, Colorado State, and New Mexico.

According to ESPN’s FPI, here are the chances of these teams getting to the needed six wins.

  • Wyoming 99.8%
  • Boise State at 62.5%
  • Utah State at 54.3%
  • San Jose State at 48.2%
  • Colorado State at 34.2 %
  • New Mexico at 13%
  • San Diego State at 9.7%

History has had seven Mountain West teams go bowling, so by going by that matrix that means the Broncos, Aggies, Spartans and Rams will be in the postseason to make it an extra one and go with eight teams.

The Aztecs 6-0 loss to Nevada gives very, very little confidence they can figure things out and get to a bowl game. The Lobos chances are slim due to the schedule.

They go to Nevada, host UNLV, go to Boise State and then Fresno State, with a finale hosting the Aggies. That is a tough go for a bowl game but getting to four wins would double last year’s win total.

The Mountain West will have seven bowl-eligible teams and they all should go bowling once games are announced later this week and on Sunday.

UNLV has a shot to go bowling with five wins due to having the second-highest APR among teams with five wins. They are trailing only the Rice Owls but they also are 5-7.

A few bowl projection outlets have included UNLV but we are going to hold off on including the Rebels in these final regular season rankings. Obviously, we are rooting for UNLV to go bowling.

Mountain West Football Bowl Projections After Week 11

Some shuffling this week in bowl projections.

Power Five failures will help MW

This time of year the bowl projections start to get more clear and it also muddles things up with replacement teams. This all goes to the College Football Playoff and New Year’s Six games, plus ESPN wanting to make a deal for the best possible television show to put on for the bowl game.

The Mountain West has the Cheeze-It Bowl as a back up if there are not enough Big 12 or Pac-12 teams. So, if either league gets a playoff team and fills its spot in a New Year’s Six bowl then it will open things up.

Also, it looks likely that the Big 10 and SEC are on track for multiple New Year’s Six teams and that will allow for trading and swapping. So, this just means these bowl lineups might be a be wonky compared to the typical tie-ins.

As for who is going bowling from the Mountain West, the teams that are bowl eligible for sure are Boise State, Nevada, Wyoming, Air Force, and San Diego State. Hawaii has six wins but since they play 13 games they need to hit the threshold of seven victories. The Warriors are likely to be bowl eligible as they face UNLV and Army in two of their final three games.

That gives us six bowl eligible teams for five or six spots as it depends on if the Hawaii Bowl will take the Warriors if eligible and match them up with former WAC for BYU.

Utah State is the next likely team with five wins and then there is Colorado State, Fresno State and San Jose State sitting with four wins each.

The Aggies are likely getting to at least six as they play New Mexico. Colorado State is playing better but they hit a tough stretch of Air Force, Boise State, and Wyoming, so they are out. San Jose State takes on UNLV and then Fresno State so a slight chance, and then the Bulldogs have the Spartans plus San Diego State and Nevada with two of the three on the road.

This week we will go with seven teams by including Utah State with the already bowl eligible teams, and also Fresno State since ESPN’s FPI likes their chances of winning two of its last three.

A few notes about the bowl lineups. Starting with the Hawaii Bowl. The game has a vaguely worded tie-in which is a combination between BYU, Hawaii or an AAC team. The Warriors have a 13-game schedule and must have seven wins to secure a bowl berth. Technically, BYU takes the Mountain West spot but a Cougars vs. Warriors matchup would be a classic WAC rivalry renewal.

There is a new bowl this year and it’s a Power Five opponent from the Big Ten in the Armed Forces Bowl.

Overall, the league has six guaranteed bowl berths and is a backup for the Cheez-It Bowl if the Pac-12 or Big 12 does not have enough teams eligible. As always, there can be trades for the best matchups.

Finally, if the Mountain West is the highest-rated team in the College Football Playoff then a New Year’s Six Bowl game is an option at either the Cotton or Orange Bowl.

1. Las Vegas vs. Pac-12

– Famous Idaho Potato Bowl vs. MAC
– Gildan New Mexico Bowl vs. Conference USA
– Hawai’i Bowl vs. BYU or American

– Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl vs. Big Ten
– Cheez-It Bowl Conditional for MW if bowl can’t fill a spot.
