Podcast: Jags Wire discusses Calais Campbell trade, new CBA

James and Phil recorded a bonus episode of “Bleav in the Jags” where they evaluated the ins and outs of Calais Campbell being traded.

The Jacksonville Jaguars were one of the hottest topics of the weekend after they traded veteran defensive lineman Calais Campbell to the Philadelphia Eagles for a fifth-round pick. To discuss the ins and outs of the transaction, Jags Wire contributor Phil Smith and I recorded a bonus episode of “Bleav in the Jags.”

Why was it time to let the veteran go? What’s the affects on the salary cap? Why didn’t they get more compensation? All of this an more was discussed in our latest episode.

Afterward, we briefly shared some thoughts on the new Collective Bargaining Agreement in which the NFL Players Association signed.

5 big takeaways from the new CBA

A rundown of major points from the approval of the NFL CBA agreement

Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Collective Bargaining Agreement was approved by NFL players Sunday morning with a vote of 1019 (51.5%) to 959 (48.5%).  and ensures labor peace through at least 2030. A mere 60 votes separated the two sides.

Here are some of the impactful takeaways:

Regular-season Schedule

The regular season will not extend to 17 games immediately — it’s likely not to take effect until at least 2021. The league will drop one of the preseason games (down from four to three) once the 17-game season is enforced. Before the start of the season, there will be a “bye week” following the final preseason game.

Jags DL Calais Campbell selected to NFLPA Executive Committee

The NFLPA names it’s Executive Committee and Jags DL will be one of 11 members on it.

With a crucial voting deadline coming up on the new proposed Collective Bargaining Agreement for the NFL Players Association, the group made an announcement on the 11 players who will serve on their Executive Committee Tuesday. Jacksonville Jaguars defensive lineman Calais Campbell was amongst them, with other notables like Richard Sherman, Malcolm Jenkins, and Alex Mack also being named to the group.

With 12 years of experience to his name and plenty of accolades on and off the field from All-Pro nominations to being named Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2019, Campbell is a perfect player for the committee. In fact, last month he was one of many veterans who took to social media to tell the players to make an informed decision.

Campbell signed with the Jags in 2017 and has made his impact felt in the Jacksonville community and on the field, accumulating 195 total tackles, 31.5 sacks, and three Pro Bowl nods during his three-year tenure with the team. He’s also held various events for the people in Jacksonville like his Christmas with Calais holiday spree and more.

As for the new CBA getting done, the NFLPA’s deadline is set for Saturday, March 14 at 11:59 p.m. EST after it was initially set for this Thursday. To have it passed, the players need a 50%-plus-1 approval rate to progress forward.

Franchise tag deadline pushed back to same day as legal tampering period

The franchise tag deadline has been moved back again and will snowfall on the same day as the legal tampering period.

After pushing the franchise tag deadline back two days to Thursday, March 12 last month, the NFL and NFL Players Association have decided to push the deadline back once again. Per ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the deadline will now fall on Monday, March 16 (11:59 AM EST), which is the same day that the legal tampering period begins.

This news comes after the NFLPA decided to push back the voting deadline towards accepting or declining the new proposed Collective Bargaining Agreement from the NFL and its owners on Monday. Instead of it being on Thursday as originally planned, the deadline will now fall on Saturday, March 14. There have been players to come out and publicly support the new labor deal, while others have voiced their displeasure for it, so the extended time will hopefully lead to some cohesion.

As pointed out by Pro Football Talk, this move makes sense with the players still deciding on how they will vote because a new CBA could change the rules for pending free-agents. A prime example is the situation unfolding with the Dallas Cowboys, who have two notable stars who want new deals in quarterback Dak Prescott and receiver Amari Cooper. Under the current CBA, teams have the ability to use both the franchise and transition tags in 2020 and that would be handy for Jerry Jones to keep both off the open market.

As many are aware, the Jags elected to use their franchise tag on defensive end Yannick Ngakoue, who came out to say he didn’t want a long-term deal with the Jags last week.

As mentioned above, the legal tampering period is scheduled to begin directly after the franchise tag deadline. The new league year and free-agency   will begin a few days later on Wednesday, March 18 at 4 p.m. ET.

NFLPA votes to extends voting deadline to weekend

With the ball now in their court, the NFL Players Association will be thoroughly going through the voting process for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. On Monday, they announced they would be extending the voting period from the original deadline of Thursday to Saturday March 14 at 11:59 p.m. EST.

The extension simply gives the players an extra two days to make a decision as it will be a huge one in which they will have to work under until 2030. So far, fans have seen a lot of notable players like Leonard Fournette, JJ Watt, and Michael Thomas voice their displeasure with the new proposed CBA. Others like Detroit Lions linebacker Devon Kennard, Atlanta Falcons long snapper Josh Harris, and New York Giants offensive lineman Nate Solder have come out to say they like the deal. That said, maybe the extension will provide some cohesion between the players, but ultimately time will tell.

The current CBA ends after the 2020 season, so if the players don’t accept it there is still time. However, some have come out to say the owners may be looking at the new proposed deal with a “take it or leave it” stance, so we may see the process get drawn out.

NFL accept new CBA proposal, now players must come to a decision

With the NFL’s current Collective Bargaining Agreement set to expire after 2020, the league’s owners have accepted the arranged terms of a new proposed CBA, which now puts the ball on the players court. The NFLPA has sent all players a fact sheet …

With the NFL’s current Collective Bargaining Agreement set to expire after 2020, the league’s owners have accepted the arranged terms of a new proposed CBA, which now puts the ball on the players court.

Per reports, all of the league’s owners met in New York City Thursday to go over the current proposal. While all of them weren’t unanimous on giving the new agreement an OK, enough votes went in favor of the new CBA to the point where the proposal was passed.

Now, the NFLPA’s team reps and its executive council will have a conference call Friday to discuss the new CBA and could potentially come to the decision to give the deal the nod or reject it. The initial plan was for both NFLPA parties to meet in Washington D.C., however, there was a change in plans.

So far, there have been several players to voice their displeasure with some of the terms of the new deal, including Jags running back Leonard Fournette, Houston Texans pass rusher JJ Watt, and New Orleans Saints receiver Michael Thomas.

As pointed out by Fournette, one of the biggest topics of the new agreement is the addition of another regular season game. The owners are also pushing for an additional playoff seed for each conference.

Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, players would get an additional game check if an additional regular season game was added, however, it would be capped at $250K, which means the highest paid players would make less than usual.

For the new CBA to move into the next step, the NFLPA will need two-thirds of the players reps to vote in favor of it, however, the final vote would require a majority for approval. Based on the reactions we’ve seen so far, it’s possible the players will want the owners to meet them a little closer to the middle though.
