Quick Lane Bowl What Happened

New Mexico State got up 17-0 helped by two touchdown passes from Diego Pavia, but his legs closed it out. Bowling Green roared back in the fourth quarter with 12 points helped by a blocked field goal for a punt and a 19-yard touchdown catch from Tyrone Broden, but it couldn’t get the ball back. Pavia and the Aggie offense were able to grind down the final 6:27 minutes converting three third down tries.

Bowling Green lost starting quarterback Matt McDonald early in the game with an apparent head injury. The offense sputtered without him, but it finally got kickstarted with a kickoff return for a touchdown from Ta’ron Keith early in the second half coming off a field goal.

– The Falcons turned it over twice, but they were both killers. They had their chances, but stalled drives, failed third down stops, and those giveaways  kept them from every getting control of the game. That had almost everything to do with …

– In relief of Matt McDonald, Bowling Green QB Camden Orth completed 14-of-22 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown, and ran for times for 16 yards

Quick Lane Bowl What It All Means

How massive is this for New Mexico State? It’s the first ever bowl win for head coach Jerry Kill – he was 0-2 at Northern Illinois and 0-3 at Minnesota – the program goes off to Conference USA with a winning season – the first since 2017 and just the second since 2002. The Aggies won a bowl in 2017 – that was the first time it got one since 1960. Now they’re 3-0-1 all-time in bowls.

Bowling Green got to a bowl game. Start with that. Yeah, this was a losing season, but for a program that was so bad for so long – it didn’t win more than four games in a year from 2016 to 2021 – this was finally a step-forward season under Scot Loeffler in his fourth season at the helm.

Would it have been different if McDonald didn’t get knocked out of the game early? That’s not quite fair to either side – Bowling Green had its chances, but blew it. Now the program hasn’t won a bowl game since 2015 and is just 1-6 since taking down the 2004 GMAC.

Bowling Green vs New Mexico State Quick Lane Bowl 5 Things To Know

Quick Lane Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

So, you want a bowl game with two teams that are really, really going to care? These two programs came into the season ranked among the lowest teams in college football, no one expected either one to have a shot at a winning season, and bowls are special for them no matter what, especially New Mexico State.

The Aggies got a break from the NCAA because a tragedy at San Jose State forced a cancelation of a midseason game. The played a 12th game anyway to have a Senior Day, rolling Valparaiso 65-3 to get to six wins, even though that made it two of the six wins coming against FCS teams, and … whatever. Head coach Jerry Kill’s team is in a bowl, and it’s rolling offensively.

This is just the fifth bowl game for the New Mexico State program. It won the Arizona in 2017, but before that the previous bowl appearance was in the 1960 Sun. Bowling Green is 1-5 in its last six bowl games going back to 2004, with the last appearance a blowout loss to Georgia Southern in the 2015 GoDaddy.

Bowling Green started out the season 1-3 in what seemed like another lost year, and it closed rough losing two of its last three games. In between, though, it went on a nice midseason run, shocked eventual MAC champion Toledo on the road, and now it brings its fun passing game to Detroit.

The Quick Lane is a reboot of other Detroit bowl games, getting going in 2014 with a mixed bag of games. The 2020 version was canceled, four were ugly blowouts, and three were entertaining. Last year was the first time a Power Five team wasn’t playing in it. This keeps that going.

CFN Experts Dec 20-27 | CFP NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

Why Bowling Green Will Win The Quick Lane Bowl

The passing game has been fun.

The Falcons might not run all that well, and they offensive line is miserable in pass protection, but Matt McDonald is able to get the offense moving through the air when it gets on a little bit of a roll.

It’s a simple formula. When the offense gets to 247 passing yards it has a shot – it’s 4-2 when it gets there and 2-4 when it doesn’t.

The other side is hit or miss, but the pass rush was as strong as any in the MAC and should be disruptive enough to force a few mistakes. New Mexico State doesn’t have big problems giving the ball away, but the D isn’t great at generating mistakes.

However …

Why New Mexico State Will Win The Quick Lane Bowl

It’s a Jerry Kill team, so in a perfect world it would like to start running and get physical. The program isn’t there yet in its Kill’s first season, but his offense has been crushing it over the last month.

QB Diego Pavia was supposed to be questionable, but he’s expected to give it a go. The offense takes on a different look if he’s able to go. He might not wing it around too much, and he might not be consistent, but he threw seven touchdown passes in his last two games and 11 over the last five – and he can run a little bit, too.

Bowling Green will give up 200 yards through the air. It’s not awful against the run, and it has a great pass rush, but the New Mexico State offensive front is good in pass protection. The quarterbacks get time to take shots down the field, and in the perfect conditions indoors, the O will stretch the field.

Why Valparaiso Will Win

The Crusaders shouldn’t be just a speed bump.

They’ve got an efficient enough passing game and good enough run defense to give New Mexico State problems. There’s a set style that has to work.

The Angels have to control the game on the ground, they can’t rely on the passing attack to do much, and they can’t turn the ball over. They gave it up three times in the five wins and 12 times in the six losses – they have yet to win when turnover it over multiple times.

Valpo needs the takeaways, and they have the pass rush to help force them. Get the D into the backfield, the O needs Aaron Dawson and the ground attack to take over early, and …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why New Mexico State Will Win

This is a dangerous Valpo team, but it’s painfully inconsistent.

Dawson is a playmaker, and the combination of Sam Hafner and Kevin Spelman can get behind the line, but the offense has a problem keeping defense out to the backfield.

It’s not like New Mexico State has a big-time pass rush, but there’s enough to show up and be disruptive. The pass defense should hold on, and the offense might be able to carry over the balance from last week’s shocking 49-14 win over Liberty.

As long as there aren’t a ton of turnovers – the Aggies cleared them up for the most part of the second half of the season – they’ll be fine.

Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been a fun week for New Mexico State football.

Jerry Kill’s bench destroyed Liberty as part of a run of four wins in five games, it got this game schedule, and it found out that it received a special waiver to go bowling even at 5-6 – the San Jose State game was cancelled earlier in the year and couldn’t be rescheduled.

Win or lose, New Mexico State will be in a bowl game. It’ll be a win with the Aggie defensive line generating enough pressure to stall too many promising Valpo drives.

Why New Mexico State Will Win

Break up the Aggies.

All of a sudden, Jerry Kill’s team is playing well with a three game winning streak and with wins in four of the last five games.

No, the running game isn’t rolling like a Jerry Kill offense should, but there aren’t any turnovers – just one in the last four games – the defense hasn’t allowed more than 270 yards in any of the last three games, and it could be dangerous if Missouri isn’t taking this seriously.

This is the exhale game for the Tigers. They’re coming off a rough blowout loss to Tennessee, and they’re looking ahead to the Arkansas game to try getting bowl eligible, but …

Bowl Projections

Why Missouri Will Win

New Mexico, UMass, Lamar.

A win is a win is a win, but Missouri is just a wee bit stronger than the teams New Mexico State has been able to hang with.

It might not have seemed like it after allowing 724 yards of Tennessee offense, but the Mizzou D really is terrific. It allowed fewer than 300 yards in four straight SEC games before dealing with the Vols.

The front should live in the New Mexico State backfield, the run D will be a brick wall, and the O won’t turn the ball over enough – possibly not at all – to give New Mexico State any easy breaks.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Tigers will be a bit slow out of the gate, but a big second quarter will take over and the defense will deal with the rest.

The Aggies will come up with a few good drives, but a slew of penalties will stall too many good chances and there won’t be enough long marches to keep the Tiger offense off the field.

New Mexico State vs UMass Game Preview

Why New Mexico State Will Win

The team is rested.

It had two weeks off since coming up with a win over New Mexico to make it two wins in the last three games. How did the wins happen? The running game was great against Hawaii, the defense held up when needed against the Lobos, and it had plenty of time to prepare for what UMass can do.

UMass can’t throw – there’s no need to worry about getting hit through the air against an O with just one touchdown pass on the year. Hold up against the run, beat UMass.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why UMass Will Win

UMass had two weeks off to get ready, too.

No, the passing game doesn’t work – like, at all – and the running game isn’t great, but the team is fantastic at controlling the clock, it doesn’t turn the ball over, and it’s not like it has to come up with 50 points to win this.

New Mexico State doesn’t have a passing game, either. The offense sputters, it struggles on third downs, and it doesn’t make up for the problems on one side with takeaways on the other.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

UMass has a bit more of a running game, but New Mexico State is a bit more effective at it.

The difference will be a few turnovers. New Mexico State doesn’t take the ball away – just four on the year – and UMass does. It’ll be +1, and that will be enough.

San Jose State vs New Mexico State Game Preview

Why San Jose State Will Win

Stop New Mexico State from running the ball and you stop New Mexico State.

San Jose State is coming off a clunker of a 17-10 loss to Fresno State when nothing seemed to work other than the passing game, but the run D was great allowing just 98 yards.

New Mexico State only hits 44% of its passes with the second-least efficient attack in college football. The Spartan defensive front will tee off.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why New Mexico State Will Win

What did Fresno State do to stop the San Jose State momentum? It hit its midrange throws, but New Mexico State can’t do that.

The Bulldogs gave up a few big pass plays, but they kept QB Chevan Cordeiro from being consistent and keeping things moving in key moments. Think bend-but-don’t-break – that’s what the Aggies have to do.

They have enough of a defense to keep things close – Wisconsin and Minnesota were the only brutal blowouts – but they need several breaks to pull this off at home.

But …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

This is the third road date and fourth game in 21 days for the Spartans. There’s going to be a wee bit of a fatigue factor, but it won’t matter all that much.

The run defense will be solid, New Mexico State won’t throw well enough to matter, and San Jose State will turn the yards into points after not getting it done last week.

New Mexico vs New Mexico State Game Preview

Why New Mexico Will Win

The defense is playing well enough to keep the New Mexico State offense from doing much of anything.

The Lobos might not have a brick wall up front, but they’re great at getting to the quarterback at forcing takeaways. Biggest of all, they can stop the run.

New Mexico State hasn’t thrown for 140 yards since the opener against Nevada, and the running game that worked so well against Hawaii a few weeks ago didn’t work against a miserable FIU D.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why New Mexico State Will Win

It’s not like New Mexico’s offense is humming.

It hasn’t pushed past 170 yards so far, it hasn’t hit 200 rushing yards against an FBS team, and overall it’s averaging just 260 yards per game. The big problem is a line that can’t keep defenses out of the backfield and isn’t generating enough of a push for the ground game.

The Lobos also have a turnover problem with five in the last two games and multiple giveaways in four of the six games. However …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

New Mexico State doesn’t force enough mistakes to overcome the other problems.

Weird things sometimes happen in this in-state rivalry, but New Mexico has won three straight, the defense will be far better, and it’ll come up with a wee bit more offensive balance.

Points will be at a premium. Neither side can hit field goals, but New Mexico will get a few in the second half to get comfortable.

Florida International vs New Mexico State Game Preview

Why Florida International Will Win

Is there anything positive coming off a 73-0 loss to Western Kentucky?

The Panthers haven’t been bad overall in pass protection, and before last week they were getting just enough of a passing game to get going.

More than anything else, they’ve got to force takeaways to give the offense easy chances. They got two in each of the first two games and one against the Hilltoppers, and New Mexico State will have interception issues at times.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why New Mexico State Will Win

Florida International is having a nightmare of a time getting the offense working.

The scoring defense is the worst in the nation allowing over 50 points per game after the WKU debacle, and the O isn’t in place to keep up any sort of pace.

The running game isn’t tearing off big runs, and there isn’t any downfield passing attack. New Mexico State finally got the ground game going like head coach Jerry Kill would like, and the success from the 45-26 win over Hawaii should continue.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Aggies might not get the 326 yards on the ground like they did against the Rainbow Warriors, but they should be able to roll without too much of a problem.

As long as the passing attack doesn’t give up a slew of picks, the program will have its first two game winning streak since late 2019.

Hawaii vs New Mexico State Game Preview

Why Hawaii Will Win

The Rainbow Warriors were finally able to have some fun.

They have yet to throw a touchdown pass in four games, but they got a 24-14 win over Duquesne with three key takeaways, a good enough game from the defense, and a whole lot of big plays at the right moment.

New Mexico State can’t throw.

Actually, it can throw, but it can’t complete many of its passes – it hasn’t been able to hit better than a 34% completion rate over the last three games.

The Aggies have turned it over 12 times in the four games, and that’s what Hawaii needs. It has to be at least +2 in turnover margin because …

Wisconsin vs New Mexico State Game Preview

Why New Mexico State Will Win

Force turnovers and take your chances from there.

All teams have problems if they’re turning the ball over, but few over the years melt down harder than Wisconsin.

There’s a certain rhythm and control this programs needs to operate.

Normally it all works, but when the mistakes start flowing – like in the Notre Dame debacle last season, several times against Northwestern over the years, and last week against Washington State – the system breaks down.

The Badgers controlled the game against the Cougars, outgained them by almost 150 yards, and had plenty of opportunities in the 17-14 loss, but late mistakes and just two really strong plays from the Wazzu offense were enough.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Wisconsin Will Win

New Mexico State has forced two takeaways in three games, and it doesn’t have the ability to capitalize even if it generates the errors.

There won’t be anything happening on the ground. Wisconsin hasn’t looked quite right overall so far, but he’s allowing just 2.3 yards per carry.

There won’t be anything happening through the air, either.

New Mexico State is having an impossible time completing for forward pass, hitting just 42% of its throws in three games.

Wisconsin should be able to control the lines without any sort of a problem, and it should be able put this away with just a few early scores – as long as there aren’t a ton of turnovers along the way.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Aggie head coach Jerry Kill has been around the Madison block before, but he doesn’t have any semblance of talent compared to some of his former Minnesota teams.

New Mexico State will try hard. It has tough tacklers in a decent linebacking corps, but the lines are about to get destroyed, the Badger offense will come up with something strong, and all will be right with the world again for one week.

And then comes the trip to Ohio State. For now, just being 2-1 with an easy victory will be good enough.
