TaxAct Texas Bowl What Happened

Tyler Shough ran for two touchdowns and threw a scoring pass as Texas Tech took advantage of a whole slew of Ole Miss mistakes – five turnovers – to be up 35-13 midway through the fourth quarter. The Rebels fought back with Jaxson Dart running for a touchdown and throwing another to pull within ten, but the Red Raiders ended any drama returning an onside kick try for a touchdown with just over three minutes to play.

Again, the mistakes. Dart threw three picks and lost a fumble, Ole Miss had a few penalty issues, and there wasn’t any answer whatsoever for the Texas Tech offensive balance. 242 Red Raider passing yards, 242 Red Raider rushing yards.

It was close deep into the first quarter. Zach Evans ran for a touchdown for the Rebels, Shough ran for a score, and then Texas Tech took over. Ole Miss moved the ball – it outgained Texas Tech 558 yards to 484 – and the D came up with three takeaways, but it was hill was too steep to climb in the second half.

Tyler Shough, QB Texas Tech
Injured throughout his career, the former Oregon Duck showed what all the fuss is about hitting 24-of-39 passes for 242 yards and a touchdown with a pick, and ran for a game-high 111 yards and two scores.

CFN Experts Picks CFP NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

TaxAct Texas Bowl Fun Stats

– Jaxson Dart had problems with turnovers, but he also threw for 361 yards and two scores and ran for 66 yards and a touchdown. Quinshon Judkins ran 23 times for 91 yards.

– Fourth Down Conversions: Texas Tech 5-of-6 – Ole Miss 2-of-7

– Texas Tech was only flagged three times. One of them was on a delay of game penalty early to honor the late Mike Leach – it was declined by Ole Miss.

TaxAct Texas Bowl What It All Means

Texas Tech just gave head coach Joey McGuire a huge contract extension, and his team played like it’s going to be a fun time in Lubbock for years to come.

With this win, the Red Raiders closed out on a four-game winning streak, beat Oklahoma and Ole Miss along the way, and it came up with its first eight-win season since 2013.

Texas Tech has now won two straight bowl games and is 11-4 in its last 15. On the flip side …

Uhhhhhh Ole Miss? Lane Kiffin is a whale of a head coach and an elite offensive mind, but his team dropped four straight and five of its last six after starting out 7-0.

Last year’s team didn’t have any ideas after then-QB Matt Corral got hurt early in a dud of a Sugar Bowl loss to Baylor, and now this makes it two straight rough bowl performances after taking home the Outback in 2020. This is the first time the program lost back-to-back bowl games since 1967-1968.

Ole Miss vs Texas Tech TaxAct Texas Bowl 5 Things To Know

TaxAct Texas Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

It seems like it’s all just starting for Texas Tech. Head coach Joey McGuire came up with a good first run, the team got on a roll in the final three games to get here – beating Oklahoma in the regular season finale was fun – and now it’s got a chance to make a big statement going into what should be an interesting offseason.

The offense should crank up even more, the weapons are still around, and the team should put a giant number on the board against a questionable Ole Miss defense.

Talk about transitional phases, Ole Miss is undergoing some massive changes when it comes to the depth, but considering all of the players who jumped into the transfer portal, there aren’t many killer departures.

The team comes in on a rough three game losing streak and with the seven game winning run to start the season well in the rearview mirror. Whatever – the offense is a blast, the ground game is among the best in America, and the will should be there because …

Ole Miss was a dud in last year’s Sugar Bowl loss to Baylor after then-QB Matt Corral got hurt. The 21-7 loss was a bit for one of the best bowl programs going over the last 30 years, going 14-4 since losing the 1990 Gator to Michigan. Since 1968, Ole Miss is 19-6 in bowls.

– Going back to the run under the late Mike Leach, Texas Tech is also fantastic in these things. going 10-4 since taking down Clemson in the 2002 Tangerine. Last year’s team crushed Leach’s Mississippi State squad in a 34-7 Liberty Bowl win, but this is the first time up for McGuire. Win, and it’ll be the program’s first eight-win season since 2013 under Kliff Kingsbury.

The Texas Bowl is relatively new, starting out in 2006, and it needs a good one. Terrific for a few years – with three of the four from 2016 to 2019 decided by a touchdown or less. The 2020 version was sacked thanks to COVID, and last year’s game was a total disaster with players wearing LSU uniforms – but hardly the team that played through the season – getting destroyed by Kansas State 42-20.

CFN Experts CFP NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

Why Ole Miss Will Win The TaxAct Texas Bowl

Run, run, and run some more.

Quinshon Johnson came up with a massive freshman season with close to 1,500 yards and 16 scores, and with QB Jaxson Dart adding some pop on the ground. The Rebels lost to Arkansas even though it ripped off 463 rushing yards, but they’re 6-1 overall when running for 200 yards or more.

The Texas Tech run defense isn’t bad – the D generates a whole lot of plays behind the line – but there’s a problem when it struggles. The team is 1-3 when giving up more than 210 rushing yards – Ole Miss should get there.

On the other side, there’s just enough of a pass rush to keep Texas Tech QB Tyler Shough from getting comfortable. The Rebels are used to getting thrown on and it usually doesn’t matter – it’s the cost of doing business for this team to give up yards against teams trying to keep up.

But …

Top 100 Bowl Players | Ranking Bowl Games So Far

Why Texas Tech Will Win The TaxAct Texas Bowl

Here comes the Texas Tech passing game.

Tyler Shough has all the NFL pro passing talent the offense could want, but he hasn’t been able to stay healthy. It’s his show now with Donovan Smith transferring and Behren Morton hurt, and he showed what he could do with 436 yards and two scores in the shootout win over Oklahoma.

The Red Raiders don’t have to throw to win, but it certainly helps. They don’t necessarily care about the time of possession battle, but they don’t operate at warp speed.

Ole Miss – even with its running game – wants to go fast, fast, fast, but in this, the Red Raiders should be able to maintain control throughout. That’s going to matter.

There’s one big problem, though.

Why Mississippi State Will Win

The Ole Miss defense fell off the map over the second half of the season.

LSU ran all over it, Texas A&M was able to throw against it, and Arkansas did whatever it wanted against Rebel front that couldn’t hold up against the run and couldn’t stop the midrange passes.

Mississippi State has hardly been perfect, and it hasn’t been able to impose its will through the air like it’s supposed to, but QB Will Rogers should get plenty of time to work, the short throws will be there, and the running game might contribute to the effort, too.

The Bulldog ground game might be the second-worst in the country yardage-wise, but the team is 5-0 when averaging at least four yards per carry.

Ole Miss allows 4.3 yards per pop, but …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Ole Miss Will Win

Here comes the Rebel running game.

The Mississippi State defensive front has been decent. but it’s about to deal with a backfield that rips off yards in big, giant chunks. Turnovers were the problem against Arkansas, but the offense averaged almost nine yards per carry on the way to 463 yards on the ground.

Clock control isn’t part of the plan for the Ole Miss attack, but it’ll move fast, average over five yards per carry, and it’ll make Mississippi State press a bit. That’s when the mistakes have to be forced.

Because of its style, every possession without a mistake matters for the Rebels. They’ve only turned it over more than once in three games – the Arkansas loss being one of them – and on the other side Mississippi State is 3-0 when coming up with three or more takeaways and 5-2 when generating two or more.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The Mississippi State defense held up reasonably well in the 31-21 loss in last year’s Egg Bowl, but it couldn’t come up with enough good third down stops. That’s about to be the problem again.

The Ole Miss running style isn’t just about coming up with big yards; it’s about setting up easy chances to move the chains.

The Ole Miss offense is great on third downs. The Mississippi State offense – stunningly, considering what it does – isn’t.

Mississippi State is 6-1 at home – the one loss coming to Georgia – and 1-3 on the road. Ole Miss is 5-1 at home – the one loss coming to Alabama – and 3-2 on the road.

The Rebels make it three in a row in the series.

Why Ole Miss Will Win

What happened to Arkansas?

Star QB KJ Jefferson is expected to be back, but he’s been banged up and in and out of the lineup over the last few weeks, but the offense has generally been okay …

Until last week. The Hogs couldn’t get going in the touch 13-10 loss to LSU, but again, Jefferson is supposed to be back. Even so, even with the main man under center – assuming he’s back – the offense has to be really, really strong to pull this off.

Arkansas is 5-1 when it comes up with over 430 yards and 0-4 when it doesn’t. Ole Miss has only allowed over 430 yards four times, and it won three of the four.

Even if the Arkansas O rolls, it has to keep up with the Rebel attack that’s great on the ground, versatile enough to find other ways to keep moving, and it’s very, very good on third downs.

The Arkansas D is awful on third downs, but …

Bowl Projections

Why Arkansas Will Win

The Hog defensive front has to get into the Ole Miss backfield, and it should be able to.

Arkansas is one of the best in the nation at generating sacks, it’s solid at coming up with tackles for loss, and it has to keep QB Jaxson Dart and the great backs from getting comfortable.

The defense might not be able to stop the Ole Miss offense cold, but it has enough of an attack to keep up the pace. The running game has to control the clock – Ole Miss doesn’t care about the time of possession battle – and just assume 200 yards on the ground. That, and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Assuming Jefferson is going, how accurate can he be?

The running game pays the bills, but this is a far more devastating team when the passing game hits the throws – it’s 4-0 when connecting on more than 64% of the tries.

This will be a back-and-forth fight with all the key skill parts on both sides having big days, but the Rebels will have a little more pop when needed in the final ten minutes.

The amazing Ole Miss running game will do just a little bit more.
