2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Duke Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Blue Devils miss from the ACC slate?

The Blue Devils catch a few bad breaks, and one of them is who they miss from the ACC schedule. Every ACC team doesn’t play five other ACC teams, and not getting Boston College and Georgia Tech hurts.

Miami, Syracuse, and Virginia Tech are all going to be a bit better, but missing them means four teams that didn’t go bowling last year are off the slate.

Duke Football Schedule What Really Matters

Get rolling early.

Duke doesn’t catch any big breaks overall in the ACC schedule, and having to play Notre Dame doesn’t help. On the plus side, that’s at home, as it the ACC and season opener against Clemson.

The date at UConn is the only road game before late October, so again with the good – there are five home games in the first six. And then with the bad – again, Clemson and Notre Dame are among those dates, as is a tough game against NC State. That all leads to a stretch of four road games in five weeks in the second half.

Duke Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s a quirky slate. All the tough home games early will be trying, and none of the late road dates are a given. However, for what should be a strong Duke team returning, getting to six wins is more than possible.

It might take a late November win to get there, but the schedule is just manageable enough to expect a solid season.

Duke vs Miami Game Preview

Why Duke Will Win

Duke showed just how good it really might be.

It might have been an amped up home game against North Carolina, but it flexed its muscle on the boards and showed just how tough it could be at getting to the free throw line.

The best rebounding team in the ACC should be able to own a Miami team that’s great on the move, but struggles to come up with defensive boards – the Blue Devils will have their share of second chance points.

But …

Why Miami Will Win

Miami showed just how good it really might be.

Yeah, Duke beat North Carolina. Big deal – it was a home win over a ranked team.

Miami went on the road and took out No. 20 Clemson 78-74, doing a great job of getting to the free throw line and finishing +10 on the boards.

No, that’s not normal for the Canes, but they should be able to keep from getting too hammered on the glass – they were only outrebounded by three in the first meeting, a 68-66 Duke win.

That was in Durham, and this …

What’s Going To Happen

It’s in Coral Gables.

Miami is 12-0 at home, and Duke hasn’t been all that sharp away from Cameron Indoor going 2-4 in true road games.

The Hurricane offense will get on the move enough to take Duke out of its game a bit. It’ll turn into a wee bit of a track meet as Miami takes over for a key stretch in the second half to open it up.

North Carolina vs Duke Game Preview

Why North Carolina Will Win

The Tar Heels haven’t been consistent, but like always, they’re great on the boards and terrific at cranking up the points.

There are defensive issues, and the three point shooting is more about bulk than efficiency, but for the most part it’s all working well enough to keep on winning.

The rebounding is making up for the mediocre outside shooting, and Duke has a problem when it’s not dominating the boards.

The Blue Devils are 8-0 when coming up with 40 rebounds or more and 8-6 when they don’t. How many teams got 40 boards against North Carolina this year? One, and Alabama needed four overtimes to get them.

Why Duke Will Win

North Carolina’s defense doesn’t force enough mistakes and it’s just okay at guarding the three.

Duke has the scoring pop to keep up the pace from the outside – it has the shooting ability North Carolina doesn’t. As long as the offense is working the ball around consistently for the right shot, the production should be there.

Duke is 7-0 when making 40% or more of its threes – 14-2 when making 30% or more. North Carolina can find ways to manufacture points in a variety of ways, but …

What’s Going To Happen

North Carolina has to crank up the points. This isn’t a team that comes up big in defensive struggles, and it has massive problems away from home.

Just 2-4 outside of Chapel Hill – and 10-1 at home – it has to make this a firefight. North Carolina is 0-4 when scoring fewer than 69 points, and Duke is – who’s 11-0 at home – has only allowed more than that twice in Cameron Indoor.

It’ll be a fight in the first meeting of the two. The regular season finale will be bigger, but this will set a tone for the last few weeks.

Duke beat UCF to win the Military Bowl. What happened, who was the player of the game, and what does it all mean?

Military Bowl What Happened

Duke had no problems moving the ball on a depleted UCF defense. QB Riley Leonard ran for two touchdowns, Jaquez Moore starting the scoring with a 14-yard dash, and Todd Pelino hit three field goals. The Blue Devils were up 20-7 at halftime and 23-7 before UCF got back on the board.

Isaiah Bowser ran for two short touchdowns for the Knights – tying it at seven in the first quarter and closing out a long drive in the fourth – but the offense couldn’t stay on the field long enough. Two turnovers – especially a fumble by QB John Rhys Plumlee – turned the tide.

UCF fought the good fight. It was missing a slew of key players on both sides of the ball – especially on defense – and Duke had just about everyone available. It showed – the Blue Devils were far crispier offensively and looked like the regular season self on defense.

He completed 19-of-28 passes for 173 yards and ran ten times for a game-high 63 yards and two touchdowns.

Military Bowl Fun Stats

– John Rhys Plumlee was a bit questionable before the game, but he battled through hitting 21-of-34 passes for 182 yards with an interception and fumble and ran for 21 yards on 14 carries. Isaiah Bowser led the team with 39 rushing yards and two scores.

– Sacks: Duke 6 – UCF 0. Duke LB Cam Dillon led the team with nine gables and a game-high two sacks

– Time of Possession: Duke 34:28 – UCF 25:32

Military Bowl What It All Means

It might have been among the most underappreciated stories of the 2022 season – Duke was fantastic in Mike Elko’s first season. It only lost four games with three of them by three points or fewer, and the other a 35-27 fight against Kansas when it was rolling at the time.

This was the program’s first winning season since 2018 and the first nine-win campaign since 2014. It was also the first bowl appearance since 2018, and with the victory Duke has won four straight since 2015.

This wasn’t really a fair representation of UCF. It was missing way too many important parts on both sides of the ball, but it was still a good effort and is still closed out the program’s fifth season with nine wins or more in the last six. With the loss, though, that makes it five bowl losses in the last eight and took Gus Malzahn’s bowl record to 3-6.

UCF vs Duke Military Bowl Presented by Peraton 5 Things To Know

Military Bowl Presented by Peraton Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

It’s been a while since Duke has made any sort of football noise. After three losing seasons, it’s back in the bowl mix with a strong winning season under first year head man Mike Elko.

The offense has been balanced, the defense has been good enough, and the team comes into this winning four of its last five games. The team isn’t missing much of anything compared to the regular season version, unlike …

UCF is going to have to do some shuffling. The offense lost a slew of key receivers and parts from the defensive back seven, and QB John Rhys Plumlee is coming off a leg injury and is very, very questionable to go in this.

It was a good season for the Knights, but they came up short in the AAC Championship loss to Tulane and it wasn’t quite the dominant season to get back to a New Year’s Six game like they were hoping for. However, they’ve won nine games, they have a way of rising up in the moment, and …

It’s UCF in a bowl game. Gus Malzahn’s bunch took down Florida in last year’s Gasparilla, and over the last several years the program has been large in good post-season performances. Malzahn, though, has been just okay in bowl games going 2-5 at Auburn before getting last year’s win over the Gators.

Bowl games aren’t a regular thing for Duke. This is just the 15th in the program’s history, but after a rough start it’s been good when it gets to the post-season. It hasn’t been to a bowl since beating Temple in the 2018 Independence – the game that took Daniel Jones’ NFL stop up a few notches – but it won three straight after losing five in a row since the 1960 Cotton.

We’re finally getting a Military Bowl again after the last two were canceled with COVID issues. Before that it was a bit of a rough run for the game over the 12 versions with just two decided by seven points or fewer.

CFN Experts Dec 20-27 | CFP NY6, Dec 28-Jan 2

Why UCF Will Win The Military Bowl Presented by Peraton

The Knights might be taking a hit to the passing game with the lost parts, but the running attack should still be able to get going from the start.

John Rhys Plumlee was the team’s most dangerous runner when it tried to take off, but RB Isaiah Bowser is good enough to take over if he can get into a groove. He didn’t have any monster games, but he was steady throughout the year.

Now he has to be a workhorse against the Duke defensive front. It’s been good against the run, but it has a rough time on third downs and has a bigger issue against teams that can throw.

Again, UCF probably isn’t going to get moving much through the air, but as long as it’s able to connect on the midrange throws – and get Bowser and the rotation of backs moving – the offense might be okay.

Against FBS teams, Duke is 0-4 when allowing more than 106 yards and 7-0 when allowing fewer. UCF ran for fewer than 130 just one in the loss to Navy, but …

Top 100 Bowl Players | Ranking Bowl Games So Far

Why Duke Will Win The Military Bowl Presented by Peraton

UCF really does have to get going on the ground, or else.

On the flip side of what happens when the Duke run defense doesn’t hold up against the running game is what happens when USC doesn’t run wild. It’s 0-3 when it doesn’t get to 160 yards and is 2-3 when it doesn’t come up with at least 250 yards – and 7-0 when it does.

Duke hasn’t allowed more than 217 all year.

The Blue Devils get the job done by controlling the clock, owning third downs, and dominating in the turnover battle. That’s going to be an issue for the other side.

UCF might have had the best offense in the American Athletic Conference, but it also had a big problem with turnovers with two or more in six of the last 11 games and seven in the last three.

Duke turned it over just ten times all season and was +14 on the year in turnover margin going 5-2 when coming up with two or more takeaways.

Why Wake Forest Will Win

The Blue Devil pass defense is about to have a bad day.

It’s been okay for the most part all year, but it allows 255 yards per game and doesn’t generate enough third down stops. Now it has to deal with the steady Wake Forest air show.

There might have been issues over the last month with three straight losses before finally getting back on track with a win over Syracuse, but even when things weren’t going right Sam Hartman and the passing attack rolled for over 300 yards.

Duke is used to giving up big yards through the air, but it’s the completion percentage that should be a problem. Duke is 0-3 against teams that hit 65% or more of their passes. Hartman should be able to do that, which is why …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Duke Will Win

Duke has to come up with multiple takeaways.

It’s been able to do it in four of the last five games, and that’s usually the antidote for the Demon Deacon attack. Wake Forest doesn’t normally have giveaway issues, but the eight against Louisville and three against NC State were a killer.

Duke is one of the best teams in the country in turnover margin. It’s not going to be able to hang yard-for-yard, but as long as it comes up with a few big plays here and there the offense should be able to crank up its own offense and keep up.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not like Wallace Wade is Death Valley or anything, but Duke has been fantastic at home and struggled on the road. However, it hasn’t beaten anyone  anywhere who’s going bowling – this would be the team’s best win of the season by far.

The Demon Deacon offense will be a bit steadier and more explosive. It’ll be dominant on third downs to go along with the big downfield shots.
