Aaron Rodgers earns PFWA NFL MVP honors

Aaron Rodgers, Aaron Donald and Derrick Henry have been honored by the PFWA

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was selected as the NFL MVP for the 2020 season by the Professional Football Writers of America it was announced Wednesday.

Rodgers, who will lead the Packers against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game, earned the honor for the third time. He has previously won in 2011 and ’14.

Rodgers completed 372-of-526 passes (NFL-leading and club-record 70.7 completion percentage) for 4,299 yards with a league-leading and club-record 48 TD passes and only five interceptions

The Offensive Player of the Year goes to Derrick Henry of the Tennessee Titans. Henry led the league in rushing for the second straight season and led the NFL in touchdowns.

Henry is the 12th running back to earn the award and the first since the Rams’ Todd Gurley in 2017.

Henry rushed 378 times for a league-leading and franchise-record 2,027 yards and an NFL-best 17 touchdowns. He became the eighth player in NFL history to rush for more than 2,000 yards.

Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Donald, in his seventh season, is the PFWA’s Defensive Player of the Year for the second time in three seasons (2018 and ’20).

Donald started all 16 games and had 45 total tackles (27 solo), 14 tackles for loss, a team-leading 13.5 sacks for minus-86 yards, 26 quarterback hits, four forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

Four reasons why Deshaun Watson remains must-watch football

The Houston Texans are limping to a losing record, but Deshaun Watson remains a must-watch. These four throws are some of the reasons why.

The next two assignments on my “to-do” list are for next week. I am to put together the list of the most attractive general manager and head coaching spots that either are, or are likely to be, available next season. When it comes to the Houston Texans, you are talking about a team with minimal draft capital, decisions to be made about the salary cap, and holes to fill on both sides of the football. That does not sound enticing. But they still might be the best landing spot for both a head coach and a general manager for one reason:

Deshaun Watson.

It is flying under the radar because of their record, but Watson is playing at an extremely high level this season. He remains must-watch football each and every week, and last week’s game against the Indianapolis Colts was no different. In another heart-breaking loss Watson was fantastic, completing 33 of 41 passes for 373 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. In this quick video breakdown you’ll see four of the many reasons Watson remains a priority of mine to study every Monday:

Watch: Justin Herbert with the back-shoulder strike for a TD

A well-executed back-shoulder throw is almost impossible to defend. Tampa Bay saw that on Justin Herbert’s TD strike to Donald Parham Jr.

One of the toughest plays to defend in football today is the back-shoulder throw. A defensive back can be in perfect position against his receiver, but a well-placed throw to his receiver can still result in a completion. Or, on this throw from Justin Herbert to Donald Parham Jr., a touchdown:

That is the situation that cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting finds himself in on this play. He employs inside leverage on this snap, forcing Parham to the outside, and when Herbert lets this pass go, the cornerback is draped all over the receiver, in almost textbook technique.

But Herbert puts the throw on the back shoulder of Parham, and the receiver adjusts perfectly. The defender does not have a chance, if he tries to get to the football he’ll have to go through Parham, which likely draws a defensive pass interference call. Instead, Herbert’s perfect throw and Parham’s great adjustment leads to six.

Watch: Myles Garrett gets to Dak Prescott for the strip-sack

The Cleveland Browns pass rusher shows off many critical traits on a single play as he forces the Dak Prescott fumble.

Aaron Donald has a reputation as the “destroyer of worlds” along the defensive line, but Cleveland Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett is making a case this season to earn a similar reputation. After sacking Dak Prescott earlier in this game, Garrett got to the Dallas Cowboys passer a second time, this time forcing a fumble:

Garrett blows past right tackle Tyron Smith on this play, getting to Prescott and forcing the loose football, which the Browns recover. When evaluating pass rushers, many people focus on the raw measurables, such as speed off the edge. But technique is also a critical component of putting pressure on opposing passers. When you see the replay angle of this sack, pay attention to Garrett’s hands. He is so quick with his hands, using a ferocious hand-over move the avoid the punch from Smith. From there, Garrett bends his angle towards the passer, getting to him to force the turnover.

Watch: Gardner Minshew connects with D.J. Chark for a toe-tapper of a touchdown

Play-action is said to be a cheat code. It sure looked like it on this touchdown from Minshew to Chark.

Two Thursday nights ago, the vaunted Jacksonville Jaguars offense struggled in a loss to the Miami Dolphins. Many thought that the offensive woes, along with those of quarterback Gardner Minshew, were due in part to missing wide receiver D.J. Chark, who was out with an injury.

Proponents of that position were given a boost when Chark caught a scoring pass early from Minshew in Jacksonville’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals:

This is a well-executed throw for the touchdown. Jacksonville uses play-action here, and Chark runs a perfect post-corner route. The receiver starts inside, showing the secondary potentially an in-breaking route, something you often see on play-action designs. But as the safety bites down to the inside, Chark cuts off his route and angles back towards the corner of the end zone. Minshew drops in the throw, Chark taps his feet, and the Jaguars are on the board again.

Perhaps this Jaguars offense is back to form with Chark in the lineup.
