Breaking down the Eagles’ 53-man roster projection as OTAs get underway

We’re breaking down and analyzing the Eagles Wire’s latest 53-man roster prediction entering OTAs

Following the 2023 NFL draft, rookie minicamp, and several phases of offseason workouts, the Eagles organized team activities will begin today, Tuesday, May 30.

The Eagles’ OTAs will be held May 30, June 1-2, June 5-6, and June 8 before the team breaks until the start of training camp.

GM Howie Roseman used the first wave of free agency and the draft to add a replacement for just about every player that departed. Throw in Nakobe Dean, Jordan Davis, and Cam Jurgens, and Philadelphia is stacked with depth at every critical position that suffered attrition.

The Eagles have almost 90 players on the offseason roster after adding seven draft picks and nine undrafted free agents.

With Phase Three of offseason workouts set to end and OTAs set to begin, here’s an updated 53-man roster prediction with breakdown and analysis.

Eagles vs. Seahawks inactives for Monday Night Football

The Philadelphia Eagles released their inactives list for Monday Night Football against the Seattle Seahawks and Jason Peters will indeed start at right guard for the Birds.

Peters will start in his 202nd career game on Monday night, his first career start at right guard.

Peters was questionable for tonight’s game with a toe injury, while Jordan Mailata will return to left tackle on a permanent basis.

For Seattle, Brandon Shell and Travis Homer were ruled out and Cedric Ogbuehi will start for Shell at right tackle against Brandon Graham.

Carson Wentz is day-to-day after being held out of Eagles scrimmage with a lower-body injury

Carson Wentz not taking part in Eagles scrimmage to close training camp

Carson Wentz is having the best training camp of his NFL career and with the Eagles set to face Washington on the road two-weeks from today, Philadelphia’s coaching staff wasn’t taking any chances.

The Eagles held a full squad scrimmage at Lincoln Financial Field to close out training camp and the Birds star quarterback appears to be a scratch with a lower-body injury.

Several players on the Eagles roster have been diagnosed with lower and upper body injuries during training camp and with the team suffering from soft tissue injuries over the past two seasons, team personnel didn’t want to risk any serious injury to Wentz in a meaningless scrimmage.

With the Eagles also trying to figure out who’ll replace Andre Dillard at left, it was best to protect Wentz and allow him to watch and Tudor the two young signal-callers.

Wentz sitting will allow Eagles coaches to fully evaluate Jalen Hurts and Nate Sudfeld as they work to name a backup quarterback.

Eagles’ QB Carson Wentz looking forward to more run-pass options with Rich Scangarello on the coaching staff

Carson Wentz looking forward to more run-pass options with Rich Scangarello on the coaching staff

The Eagles have a unique situation when it comes to managing Carson Wentz’s propensity for escaping the pocket.

Wentz is a really good athlete who can make things happen with his feet, but getting outside the pocket also puts the Eagles franchise signal-caller at risk of suffering an injury or a big hit.

In the offseason, the Eagles added new wrinkles to the offense when they promoted Press Taylor to passing game coordinator hired Rich Scangarello to the coaching staff as a senior offensive assistant. Scangarello has experience working with Kyle Shanahan and he was the offensive coordinator in Denver last season after previously working with Lamar Jackson during his rookie season in Baltimore.

The new wrinkles have made Carson Wentz excited and he told Dave Spadaro of the team’s official website that he’s looking forward to more run-pass options (RPO’s).

“I think some things will look a little different, but I’m really excited about it,” Wentz said Thursday afternoon during a video teleconference from the NovaCare Complex. “I think it’ll really complement what we (are) as an offense and who we are identity-wise.”

Wentz’s excitement stems from the Eagles likely incorporating more RPO’s, where the run game is mixed up with play-action and other facets to take advantage of Carson’s ability to make huge plays outside of the pocket.

Wentz made several of those big plays outside the pocket down the stretch, including his huge touchdown pass to Miles Sanders against Washington.

Former Bucs CB Vernon Hargreaves could be a player the Eagles have interest in claiming

Vernon Hargreaves could be a player the Eagles have interest in claiming

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers grew tired of Vernon Hargreaves and his antics, but could the former first-round pick be a player that the Eagles have interest in adding to the roster?

Two days after he was benched for lack of hustle, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers released starting cornerback Vernon Hargreaves on Tuesday morning.

“After thoughtful consideration over the past few weeks, Bruce and I came to the conclusion that we needed to make this change,” Buccaneer’s general manager Jason Licht said in a statement via ESPN.com. “
Hargreaves was the 11th overall pick in the 2016 draft out of the University of Florida.

Even with Cre’Von LeBlanc set to return to the roster, Hargreaves could be a good fit for an Eagles defense looking for a standout cornerback.

Hargreaves started all 16 games for the Buccaneers as a rookie, and had his best season as a pro, logging 76 tackles and two forced turnovers. The past two seasons have seen Hargreaves really struggle with injuries and inconsistency.

He missed half of his second season with a hamstring issue and all but one game last season after injuring his shoulder.

Hargreave would fit well in Jim Schwartz man to man defense, a style he was astute at coming out of college.

His physical play marvels Rasul Douglas’s style and he’s still playing on his rookie deal.

Because he was waived, Hargreaves will be subjected to the waiver process, meaning the other 31 NFL teams around the league will have an opportunity to place a claim before he can become an unrestricted free agent.

Still in his fourth-year, Hargreaves would carry a salary into 2020 of $9.954 million after the Buccaneers exercised his fifth-year option prior to the season.
