August Sports Betting Calendar: NFL Preseason, US Open and WNBA Playoffs

Novak Djokovic goes for a second straight Grand Slam title. And football is back!

The wait is over for those starved of football. The August sports betting calendar is highlighted by the return of the NFL in the form of preseason play, though I personally wouldn’t wager on those wholly unpredictable games.

Besides, there’s so much more going on in August.

Novak Djokovic will go for a second straight Grand Slam title when the US Open gets underway near the end of the month. WNBA teams jockey for playoff position until the start of the playoffs in mid-August. And all three of the FedEx Cup Playoffs will determine a winner on the PGA Tour.

Here’s a look at all of that and more going on.

Lewis Hamilton gave an emotional speech, inside the car, after winning his 7th F1 title

“That’s for all the kids out there,” he said, “who dream the impossible.”

Lewis Hamilton captured his seventh F1 title on Sunday, after he won the Austrian Grand Prix in a classic display of racing.

The Mercedes driver is on an unprecedented run of dominance in the sport, and while you might think that winning these is becoming old hat to Hamilton, it still clearly means a lot.

On his cool down lap, Hamilton let the emotion pour out of him. You could hear him getting choked up, and then he gave a speech to the racing world, who was hanging on his every word.

“That’s for all the kids out there,” he said, “who dream the impossible.”

After the race, Hamilton also posted a note to social media, in which he talked about his real goal with the win, and his career writ large: a “desire to help push our sport, and our world to become more diverse and inclusive.”

The post came accompanied with a picture of his hand raised in a fist, while wearing a mask.

Grand Prix of Tuscany has wild start with two massive crashes in the opening six laps

Crash! Another crash! What is going on in the Tuscan Grand Prix?

The Grand Prix of Tuscany got off to a bizarre start on Sunday morning when a few races’ worth of crashes took place within the opening six laps.

By the eighth lap, nearly a third of the drivers in the race had retired due to wrecks — Verstappen and Gasly were done almost right away, with Latifi, Magnussen, Giovinazzi and Sainz all joining them.

The first wreck took place in an opening corner. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen struggled with power coming out, but found himself in the middle of the pack into the corner. A clip that took place behind him, however, sent Pierre Gasly’s car flying into Vertstappen, and sent them both spinning into the gravel.

The second wreck was even more bizarre. After the caution flag was out for the first wreck, the drivers were set to resume racing. But with the safety car gone and the pack approaching the start line, the drivers at the front of the pack — especially Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas — didn’t accelerate as quickly as those in the back. Bottas had steady speed but was continuing to warm up his tires … before accelerating as he crossed the line.

Multiple drivers at the back of the pack, however, saw the green light and slammed down on their accelerators … only to smash into the cars in front of them, who had not yet started going full bore.

Before the race could even get going again, the red flag was out and all the drivers headed to pit row.

Not sure how much more can happen this race. We’ve had so much in the opening six laps.

Charles Leclerc thankfully walks away from terrifying crash at Italian GP

Ferrari has a terrible day at Italian GP, with two DNFs following Charles Leclerc’s scary wreck.

Charles Leclerc thankfully was able to walk away from a truly scary crash at the Italian GP on Sunday.

The race was briefly suspended after the Ferrari team member lost control of his car at the Autodromo Nazionale in Monza, Italy. Leclerc, who won this race last year after starting in the pole position, started P13 in the race.

The 22-year-old driver had fought his way all the way up to fourth following a restart when he slammed into the wall.

It marked a disastrous day for Ferrari at their home track. Sebastian Vettel, who qualified in 17th (!) position, was forced to retire after sustaining brake failure.

Watch the crash below:
