Georgia transfer turning heads early in spring practice

The Georgia Bulldogs added multiple receivers to their team this offseason, and reports indicate one has already made his presence felt.

The Georgia Bulldogs added multiple receivers to their team via the transfer portal this offseason, and early reports indicate that one has already made his presence felt this Spring.

According to On3, a great deal of positive feedback was given regarding the performance of Miami transfer Colbie Young, who caught multiple passes including a touchdown during the practice. Young, who played three years with the Hurricanes, recorded 47 catches for 563 yards and five touchdowns a year ago prior to transferring to the Bulldogs this offseason.

Young is listed at 6’5 and 215 pounds and has previously drawn comparisons to another well-known former Bulldog who transferred from Miami in Lawrence Cager, who was nearly the same size and shares a similar skillset as Young. Georgia has lacked a true jump ball threat at receiver over the past few years since Cager left, and if he continues to progress, Young could fit that role perfectly.

Georgia softball wins series vs. No. 14 Alabama

Georgia softball picked up a series win over No. 14 Alabama, plays in first road SEC series of the season this weekend

The Georgia Bulldogs softball team picked up an impressive opening SEC series win over the No. 14 Alabama Crimson Tide. Georgia went 3-1 over the past week against quality competition. The Dawgs nearly swept the Crimson Tide, but came up just short in a 5-4 loss on Sunday.

Georgia is now 23-4 on the season with wins over seven different ranked opponents. Georgia looks like one of the top softball teams in the SEC along with LSU, Tennessee and Florida.

Georgia outfielder Jayda Kearney has been outstanding this season. The senior has 12 home runs and 27 RBIs in 27 games played this year. Infielder Sara Mosley has also added nine home runs and 41 RBIs for the Bulldogs.

Georgia softball’s next game is at Turner Softball Stadium in Athens, Georgia. Georgia hosts Georgia Southern on Wednesday, March 20 at 6:00 p.m. ET in the Dawgs’ next game. Georgia plays in its first SEC road series this weekend at Ole Miss.

4-star receiver projected to commit to Georgia

Multiple experts have projected a top in-state receiver to commit to Georgia football over the past week.

Four-star receiver Travis Smith Jr. has been projected by multiple experts to commit to Georgia over the past week. Both 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong and Benjamin Wolk over the past week have predicted that the Dawgs will land the coveted 6-foot-4, 191-pound pass catcher, who is currently the 11th ranked player at the position in the class of 2025.

Smith is an Atlanta native who caught 843 yards on 53 receptions last season along with 11 touchdowns for Westlake High School in Atlanta, Georgia. He is a dual sport athlete, also playing for the Westlake basketball team. In addition to Georgia, he has made visits to Tennessee, Alabama, and Auburn.

Smith’s primary recruiter on the Georgia staff is receivers coach James Coley, who has quickly reacclimated back into his role as a recruiter for the Dawgs since being hired away from South Carolina to replace Bryan McClendon. The Dawgs’ 2025 class currently has five commitments, with none at the wide receiver position.

UGA softball drops to No. 6 in power rankings

Georgia softball falls three spots in the latest softball power rankings

The Georgia Bulldogs softball team fell to No. 6 in the NCAA’s softball power rankings. Georgia suffered two losses over the last week to No. 20 California and No. 11 Stanford. Georgia still managed to go 3-2 last week.

The Dawgs added a pair of ranked wins. UGA beat No. 2 California 4-2 in the first game of that series. Additionally, Georgia picked up an impressive 2-1 win over No. 8 Clemson. Stanford, who is No. 5 in the power rankings, broke Georgia’s heart with a 3-1 win in extra innings over the Bulldogs.

No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 2 Texas, No. 3 LSU and No. 4 Duke are the other teams ranked ahead of Georgia. The Bulldogs are 15-3 and look like contenders to win the SEC.

Michella Chester explained why she had Georgia as the sixth-ranked softback team in her top-10 power rankings.

Georgia notched two losses — one to Cal and the other to Stanford. The Bulldogs did win the mid-week against Clemson via a Jayda Kearney walk-off. This team can move right back up.

Georgia softball’s next games are all at Turner Softball Stadium in Athens, Georgia. Georgia hosts Miami (Ohio) on Friday, March 8 at 6:00 p.m. in the Dawgs’ next game.

UGA softball No. 3 in power rankings ahead of big weekend

Georgia softball is only ranked behind Oklahoma and Texas in the latest softball power rankings

The Georgia Bulldogs softball team is the third-ranked team in the NCAA’s softball power rankings. Only Oklahoma and Texas are ranked ahead of Georgia. The Bulldogs are 13-1 and have avenged their one loss of the season (to Virginia Tech).

Georgia softball’s recent 2-1 win over No. 8 Clemson is not factored into the most recent edition of the NCAA’s power rankings, but that result would only help the Bulldogs. Michella Chester explained why she had Georgia as the third-ranked softback team in her top-10 power rankings.

The Dawgs too picked up their first loss of the season at the hands of Virginia Tech. Lost by 1 run but followed it up with a 7-4 win over them the next day. Still a top 3 team.

Georgia softball’s next games are on March 1 against No. 20 California and Boise State. The Dawgs also face California (again) and No. 11 Stanford on March 2. Georgia finishes the weekend with another game against Stanford on March 3.

Charlie Condon homers three times in Georgia’s loss to Michigan State

Georgia’s Charlie Condon hits three home runs in Michigan State loss

On a night when the Bulldogs suffered their first loss of the 2024 season at home to Michigan State by a final score of 19-6, the talk around the SEC baseball world was still the performance of Georgia slugger Charlie Condon.

One of the conference’s top hitters, Condon continued his stellar start to the 2024 season Wednesday night, going three-for-four with three HR, four RBI, and three runs scored. Condon, who drew the start defensively in left field, also walked once, with his three home runs coming in the first, second, and fourth innings.

Not only was this certainly an impressive performance from the Georgia slugger, but it also continued what has been a truly stellar start to the year for Condon.

Across nine games, a span in which Georgia is 8-1, Condon is slashing a phenomenal .639/.696/1.417 with seven HR and 13 RBI, along with having drawn eight walks compared to only five strikeouts. Condon is also among the conference leaders in multiple statistical categories, as well as ranking top five in a few nationally.

Is Condon the early frontrunner for the 2024 SEC Player of the Year? He will have some stiff competition from Florida’s two-way star Jac Caglianone.

Georgia baseball remains undefeated with walk-off win vs Northern Kentucky

Georgia baseball moves to 7-0 on the season thanks to a walk-off HBP

Georgia baseball is off to a perfect start in the 2024 season, moving to 7-0 with a walk-off victory at home against Northern Kentucky on Sunday. Freshman Tre Phelps was hit by a pitch three times, the third coming with the bases loaded in the ninth inning, giving the Bulldogs a 12-11 win to sweep the three-game series.

It was a career day by Phelps, who also recorded his first-career hit — a home run — to put the Bulldogs up 8-5 in the fifth. That run helped propel Georgia’s 4-run fifth inning, which included homers by Phelps, Logan Jordan and Kolby Branch.

Branch led the Georgia offense, hitting 3-for-5 with 2 RBI and two runs. Charlie Condon had an efficient day at the plate, hitting 4-for-5 with an RBI, two runs and a walk.

The Bulldogs ultimately squandered a 9-5 lead due to inconsistency on the mound. UGA’s pitching staff allowed 16 hits and four walks combined. Starter Leighton Finley gave up five hits, two of which were home runs, for four runs in three innings. Reliever Josh Roberge was pulled after 2.2 innings with eight hits and four more runs.

Despite the play on the mound, the Bulldogs held Northern Kentucky back during the late charge by the Norse. Georgia’s power at the plate was once again on full display. UGA’s 22 home runs in seven games leads the SEC.

Georgia will face tougher tests soon with matchups against Presbyterian and Michigan State before a three-game series with Georgia Tech. The Bulldogs will face their first ranked opponent when No. 18 Iowa makes a trip to Athens on March 15.

Watch: Georgia track’s Christopher Morales Williams sets new world record

This incredible performance by Christopher Morales Williams set a new world record…

The University of Georgia took the national spotlight on Saturday thanks to an outstanding performance by UGA track star Christopher Morales Williams, who’s 44.49 400-meter set a new world record at the Southeastern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship.

Williams, a sophomore, set the school, meet, facility, collegiate and world records all in one race. He cleared second place, Florida’s JeVaughn Powell, by more than a second (45.61).

The SEC Network’s broadcast crew was shocked to learn that William’s run eclipsed the previous world record:

Williams’ performance notched UGA’s fifth men’s title in the event. The Bulldogs will train through the first weekend of March before traveling to Boston, Mass., for the NCAA Indoor Championships (March 8-9). Georgia will begin its outdoor season at the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta on March 15-16. The SEC Outdoor Championships will be held in Gainesville, Fla., on May 9-11.

Georgia reportedly losing top assistant coach to FBS program

Georgia losing top assistant coach to FBS program

According to reports from those like 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz, current Georgia running backs coach Dell McGee is expected to be named the new head football coach at Georgia State in the near future.

McGee will replace former Georgia State head coach Shawn Elliott, who was recently named the new tight ends coach at South Carolina.

One of the top recruiters in the SEC, McGee has been the Bulldogs running backs coach since 2016. Under McGee, Georgia has produced some of the SEC’s top running backs, a list that includes the likes of Nick Chubb, Sony Michel, D’Andre Swift, and Zamir White, among others.

If hired, McGee will be the second Georgia assistant coach to leave Athens in the last two weeks, as former wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon is now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the NFL.

McGee would take over a Georgia State program that went 7-6 overall and 3-5 in Sun Belt play a year ago.

Georgia softball ranked No. 2 in latest power rankings

Georgia softball is only ranked behind the defending national champions

The Georgia Bulldogs softball team is the second-ranked team in the NCAA’s softball power rankings. Only Oklahoma, who is the defending national champions, is ranked ahead of Georgia. The Bulldogs are 9-0 and have three straight wins over ranked opponents.

Georgia is coming off an impressive week where the Bulldogs defeated No. 5 Florida State, No. 20 UCLA and No. 8 Oklahoma State. UGA avenged their Super Regional round defeat in the NCAA Tournament to Florida State with a historic 20-10 demolition of the Seminoles. Georgia scored the most runs in program history against the Seminoles, but did allow a season-high 10 runs.

Michella Chester explained why she had Georgia as the second-ranked team in her power rankings.

The Dawgs and Texas feel interchangeable in the Nos. 2 and 3 spots, but I put Georgia up at two after a statement 20-10 win over Florida State, among four convincing wins at the Clearwater Invitational that included UCLA, Oklahoma State and Wisconsin. Georgia is looking good.

Georgia softball’s next game is on Feb. 23 against Virginia Tech as the Bulldogs host the Georgia Classic. The Dawgs play Virginia Tech again on Feb. 24. Additionally, Georgia plays Radford on Feb. 24.
