Yeah, the Marshall run defense has been special lately. It’s about to see something different with the Appalachian State ground game.

That doesn’t mean the Mountaineers can’t stall – they sure did in the loss to Coastal Carolina – but when they’re on, forget it.

5-1 when they run for more than 90 yards, they’re going to keep forcing the issue against a Marshall defensive front that’s totally dominant against good ground attacks.

Yeah, the Marshall run defense has been incredible at home, but two of the best performances came at home against FCS teams. Louisiana and Coastal Carolina were able to win even though they stalled.

Why Appalachian State Will Win

The running game has been rolling again.

When this thing works, Appalachian State starts running, keeps running, and it comes up with 200 yards with gashing runs helped with a slew of dangerous backs getting in some work.

It ran over Georgia State for over 400 yards, kept the momentum going against Robert Morris in a scrimmage last week, and now it gets a Coastal Carolina defense that’s been great overall but got hammered by Old Dominion for 320 rushing yards in a loss a few weeks ago.

The Mountaineers have to own the narrative. Coastal Carolina wins when it dominates on third downs, wins the time of possession battle in lopsided fashion, and takes over the turnover battle.

Appalachian State has the talent to win in all three of those phases.

There are problems when Appalachian State isn’t running wild.

It’s got the ability to throw, but that’s not how this all works. The 63-61 opener against North Carolina was a crazy outlier. The other two losses this season to James Madison and Texas State came when the ground game failed to get to 100 yards. Those happened to be the only two games all year the Mountaineers turned it over multiple times.

Coastal Carolina turned it over four times against Buffalo and twice against Gardner-Webb – and won both games. It gave the ball away just three times in the other five games and has forced multiple takeaways five times.

Appalachian State was supposed to be the Sun Belt’s killer running team this year, and it’s turning out to be Georgia State.

The Panthers can throw a little bit when they have to, but the veteran combination of backs and quarterback Darren Grainger are starting to take over.

Army ran for more yards, but Georgia State was more effective on the ground in the 31-14 win. It ripped through Georgia Southern for 336 yards, and they’re combining it with a defense that takes the ball away by the truckload.

Why Arkansas State Will Win

That wasn’t exactly the Ohio State we were expecting to kickoff the season.

Superstar WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba was hurt, the offense sputtered, and it took a whole lot to put away Notre Dame in the 21-10 win. The Arkansas State defense isn’t anywhere near as strong as the Irish version – and Grambling State isn’t Ohio State – but it allowed just 102 yards of total offense in the 58-3 win to get things going.

QB James Blackman is a former Florida State transfer who isn’t going to be fazed by the big stage against the great team, the offense as a whole should be able to do even more than the Irish were able to – it’ll open it up and take some more chances – and there’s enough of a running game to catch a Buckeye team relaxing after the massive victory against the Irish.

Yeah, again, Grambling State isn’t Ohio State.

The Buckeye offense was fine. It wasn’t cranking up the gajillion yards right away that everyone expected, but that was the No. 5 team in the country on the other side.

Forget the O – there’s no worry there. The defense that spent all offseason tweaking and looking to improve came out smoking. Notre Dame didn’t exactly take any big chances, but the Buckeyes didn’t allow anything against the run, kept Tyler Buchner from hitting the downfield throws, and it pitched a shutout in the second half.

The A&M lines are a wee bit different than what Appalachian State saw against North Carolina.

The Aggies came up with an efficient 31-0 win over Sam Houston to start the campaign, starting with a defense that held the high-octane attack to fewer than 200 yards and coming up big on third down after third down.

The defensive front was great at getting into the backfield and stuffing everything before it could get going. The Aggies have the tacklers that North Carolina doesn’t, and they’re going to make Brice try to win this.

What’s Going To Happen

Texas A&M will never give up the ball.

Appalachian State isn’t going to hit the explosive plays it came up with against North Carolina as it tries grinding it out a bit more than it might like. It’s able to control the clock at times, but it’s going to press a bit with A&M having the offensive on the field for long stretches of time.

The deliberate style of A&M will take over the game in the third quarter as QB Haynes King has a sharp performance on third downs and the defense takes care of the rest.
