NFL draft: Why beefing up Steelers offensive line is critical for Russell Wilson

That trademark mobility that Russell Wilson displayed early in his career, allowing him to maneuver around in the pocket, is no longer prevalent.

Like you and me, Russell Wilson isn’t getting any younger. That trademark mobility that Wilson displayed early in his career, allowing him to maneuver around in the pocket, is no longer prevalent.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are without a starting-caliber center and have a subpar tackle in Dan Moore Jr.

These issues need to be addressed in the draft this week or it could be a rough season for the 12-year veteran.

Wilson has absorbed 100 sacks over the last two years. With 527 career sacks, Wilson is fourth behind Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger and Aaron Rodgers. Considering the beating he’s taken over his career, he was impressively durable. Wilson went nine seasons without missing a game. Since then, he’s missed five games due to injury, the latest being a concussion in 2022.

Let’s hope for Wilson’s sake that the Steelers don’t delay drafting a center and tackle.

Can Steelers HC Mike Tomlin keep Russell Wilson in check?

Russell Wilson came to the Steelers with a diva quarterback moniker.

Quarterback Russell Wilson came to the Pittsburgh Steelers last month with some baggage. He was no longer the team-first kind of guy that the Seattle Seahawks drafted a dozen years ago.

Wilson changed after his marriage to pop star Ciara, as evidenced by his contractural demand for a personal office (on the second floor with coaches and executives) and the use of his own private quarterbacks coach. There was even a report, which Wilson has denied, that he tried to get future Hall of Fame head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider fired in 2022.

All of this is old news but perhaps new to Steelers fans, who are exclusive to their team and were unaware of Wilson’s diva-like tendencies.

“There’s a lot to Russ,” Ian Furness of KJR Radio and Fox-13 in Seattle told TribLive’s Tim Benz in March. Furness covered Wilson for his decade-long career with the Seahawks.

“A lot of things started to change when that happened,” Furness said when referencing Wilson’s 2016 marriage to Ciara. “He kind of became a ‘Look at me guy.’ We used to joke out here, it used to be their saying was, ‘Why not us?’ Then it became ‘Look at me,’ for Russ. He just changed, and he became a problem inside the facility, with the front office and with the staff. It just snowballed from there before they traded him.”

“He operated on his own agenda. And it was about Russ. In the ultimate team sport, it was all about Russ — to the point the ‘diva quarterback’ moniker was placed on him. And for good reason.”

Perhaps his ill-fated seasons in Denver humbled him, and it’ll be new city, new Russell. If not, though, how will Mike Tomlin handle him? Can Tomlin keep him in check?

Tomlin has juggled his fair share of strong personalities in Pittsburgh. While they are different scenarios, he somehow kept Antonio Brown‘s extreme ways under wraps until it all came crashing to the surface. Most recently, George Pickens‘ character issues have come into question.

Tomlin has an innate ability to connect with his players and that process has begun with Wilson. Let’s hope, for the sake of the Steelers, that he doesn’t become a bigger-than-the-team nuisance.

First look at Russell Wilson training as Steelers QB

This should tide Steelers fans over until OTAs.

Here’s the first look at quarterback Russell Wilson training as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“Love the Work. The Best Is Ahead,” Wilson posted on X (formerly Twitter).

He’s looking mighty fit as he practices footwork and throwing drills in a pair of Steelers logo shorts.

No question there will be more footage where this came from, along with a trip with Wilson and his receivers (ahem, now is a good time to get Brandon Aiyuk) as they prepare for May organized team activities (OTAs).

Deshaun Watson issues ‘spooky’ warning to Steelers QB Russell Wilson

Browns QB Deshaun Watson warned Steelers QB Russell Wilson about the AFC North.

The AFC North just got a whole lot more interesting after the Pittsburgh Steelers signed free agent quarterback Russell Wilson. While they somehow managed to still make the playoffs with third-string quarterback Mason Rudolph under center, having a veteran winner like Wilson makes them a real contender.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson welcomed his counterpart to the division with a bit of a warning to him.

“Welcome to the AFC North, where things can get real spooky,” Watson said on the March 15 episode of his QB Unplugged podcast.

Watson followed the strange comment with some much due respect for the Steelers and how Mike Tomlin runs things.

“Pittsburgh is a good organization. It’s crazy for me to say it because I’m a Brown. I’m just keeping it 100,” Watson said. “At the end of the day, you have to give respect where respect is due. Tomlin is going to have them boys right. It made sense for [Wilson] to go there. They are going to compete.”

With the overhaul of the quarterback room and an offensive coordinator who knows what he’s doing, Pittsburgh has its first real chance since Ben Roethlisberger retired to bring fear to their opponents. The Steelers were a laughingstock with Kenny Pickett and Mitch Trubisky under center and Matt Canada calling a predictable offense.

Steelers QB Russell Wilson welcomes Justin Fields to Pittsburgh

Steelers QB Russell Wilson sent a warm welcome to Justin Fields on X.

What a difference a month makes. In February, the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback room was comprised of Kenny Pickett, Mitch Trubisky, and Mason Rudolph.

After the overhaul, it’s Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. It’s been a wild turn of events.

Who knows what Wilson knew about the Steelers’ plans to trade for Fields, but nevertheless, he’s amped.

“Let’s get it @justnfields! QB room bout to be (fire emojis),” Wilson posted on X.

Wilson has to be relieved he’s no longer the lone quarterback on Pittsburgh’s roster. And no matter how Fields truly feels about being traded from Chicago, he couldn’t be in a better situation. After being burned by the Chicago fire, he’ll have an opportunity to learn behind a veteran Super Bowl-winning quarterback.

Fields is a competitor and no question disappointed with how his first two seasons played out, but he gets a fresh start in a far better situation for a young quarterback.

Report: Steelers envision Russell Wilson, not Justin Fields, as long-term answer at QB

Before you get too excited about the having their future franchise QB in Justin Fields, hold your horses.

Before you get too excited about the Pittsburgh Steelers potentially having their future franchise quarterback in Justin Fields, hold your horses.

If you can believe a word from Gerry Dulac, the Pittsburgh Steelers intend to extend quarterback Russell Wilson through the 2024 season.

“Russell Wilson signed a one-year contract with the Steelers for the vet minimum because the Broncos were paying him $39 million in 2024. But Wilson and the Steelers intend to do a longer deal at the end of the season, per sources,” Steelers insider Gerry Dulac posted on X.

That’s a conundrum, given that Pittsburgh has just acquired Justin Fields in a trade. We all got the feeling that Wilson was merely a bridge QB.

Former Steelers Wire managing editor Neal Coolong predicts Fields will explore free agency in 2025, provided Wilson is “healthy and capable.”

The Steelers now own the fifth-year option rights to the former 11th-overall draft pick, which they must decide on by May 2. The cost to exercise that option is a cool $25.664 million, which Pittsburgh would be insane to do.

For now, though, Fields is playing on the final year of his rookie deal at a much more affordable rate of $3.233 million. The Steelers are likely to decline the option and perhaps offer a team-friendly extension if Wilson doesn’t work out and wants to test free agency.

The good thing is that the Steelers have options where things looked pretty bleak two weeks ago.

QB Russell Wilson taking the long view on career with Steelers

In Russell Wilson’s eyes, it’s more than just a one-year contract with the Steelers.

Russell Wilson came to the Pittsburgh Steelers on a one-year contract, but that’s not how the quarterback views it. He’s in it for the long haul.

“I see it as a long-term goal,” Wilson told Missi Matthews of Steelers.com on how he characterizes his contract. “I want to be part of the Pittsburgh community for a really long time and I’m really excited about that. Hopefully we can add some more championships.”

Prior to his interview with Matthews, Wilson held his introductory press conference and shared how much longer he wanted to play.

“I’ve got five to seven more years of ball that I really want to be the best that I can be,” Wilson said. “Who you marry up with matters.”

Wilson landed him a great partner in the Pittsburgh Steelers. Let’s hope it’s a long and happy marriage.

Steelers free agency: QB Russell Wilson officially signs deal

It’s officially official. The Steelers have their new QB under contract.

It’s officially official. The Pittsburgh Steelers have their new quarterback signed. Even as recently as last season, no one would’ve believed Russell Wilson would be donning the black and gold.

Wilson is expected to compete with Kenny Pickett for the QB1 gig this offseason, but we all know who will win that — and it’s not Pickett.

Wilson, who threw for 26 touchdowns to just eight interceptions in 2023, now has a defense that can help him win games. During Wilson’s tenure with the Broncos, their defense allowed a staggering 78 touchdowns (to the Steelers’ 68 in same span).

Exactly who Wilson will be throwing to in 2024 is still a work in progress. Pittsburgh traded WR1 Diontae Johnson on Tuesday, leaving a substantial void.

93.7 The Fan’s Jeff Hathhorn reported that Cincinnati Bengals free agent Tyler Boyd wants to “come home” to Pittsburgh, but Steelers fans have been waiting patiently for that to happen. Otherwise, the team could draft a top-tier receiver high and move George Pickens into the WR1 role.

Patrick Queen to Russell Wilson: ‘Let’s do it my boy’

Ravens FA Patrick Queen is amped about joining Russell Wilson and the Steelers this season.

Patrick Queen is amped about joining Russell Wilson and the Pittsburgh Steelers this season.

Moments after the news broke and Wilson posted to X, the Pro Bowler responded to his new quarterback: “Let’s do it my boy.”

Wilson will love having a guy like Queen on the field when the Steelers need a stop.

Queen has started all 67 games since being selected No. 28 overall in 2020, amassing four interceptions, 15 passes defended, five forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries for 58 yards and a score, 13.5 sacks, 454 tackles (37 for loss) and 33 quarterback hits.

Russell Wilson has perfect one-word reaction to Steelers inking LB Patrick Queen

Pending Steelers QB Russell Wilson reacted on X to the signing of Ravens FA ILB Patrick Queen.

DangerRuss, meet Patrick Queen. Somebody’s amped, and it’s not just the Pittsburgh Steelers defense.

Moments after the news came down that the Steelers are planning to ink Pro Bowl inside linebacker Patrick Queen, Russell Wilson took to X to share his approval.

“QUEEEEENNN!” Wilson posted.

Yes, Russ, we’re equally as excited. And what’s there not to be excited about?

Queen has started all 67 games, amassing four interceptions, 15 passes defended, five forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries for 58 yards and a score, 13.5 sacks, 454 tackles (37 for loss) and 33 quarterback hits.
