2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Virginia Tech Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Hokies miss from the ACC slate?

After a disastrous season, the Hokies could use a bit of a good break.

There’s no Clemson on the slate. That’s about as strong as it gets. There’s no Miami or North Carolina, too. Missing Georgia Tech isn’t a plus, but this year – don’t laugh – not having to play Duke is a good thing.

There are still plenty of nasty ACC games to deal with, but as long as there’s some improvement and some consistency after that rough 2022, there are conference wins to be had.

However …

Virginia Tech Football Schedule What Really Matters

Three road games in the four weeks of November is rough. Granted, one of them is at Virginia, but that’s still a tough way to close, especially considering the other road stretch.

It’s bad enough to have a three-road-game-in-four-week run, but the Hokies have two of them.

Rutgers and Marshall should be winnable games, but that’s hardly a guarantee on the road. That’s followed up by Pitt and then the trip to Florida State, and …

Virginia Tech Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

There’s a home game against Purdue. That has to be a win, and that goest for the road game at Rutgers, too. Do that, and it should be a strong 4-0 start. Lose to the two Big Ten teams, and it’s going to take something special to get to six wins and a bowl game.

On the plus side, there are just four ACC road games, but again, the problem is with the November timing. Again, though, if the Hokies can get hot early, though, this should be a decent season.

Virginia vs Virginia Tech Game Preview

Why Virginia Will Win

The Cavaliers have found their groove.

The offense has been cranking it up more than normal, the defense came through big in Syracuse to keep the winning streak going, and they’re not having problems making things happen on the road.

They’re a party at home with the O, but they’re business on the road with the D.

Expect this to be a lower scoring game than the 78-68 win over the Hokies in Charlottesville a few weeks ago. Not to go totally cliché with every point will come at a premium, but Virginia Tech isn’t just okay at coming up with free throws, and it’s not strong enough from the field to pay off.

The Hokies are 6-8 on when they don’t shoot 51%. and this is Virginia. It only allowed two teams to shoot better than 49% this year, and Syracuse was one of them.

But …

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

Not shockingly, this is a far different Hokie team at home.

How many true road games has Virginia Tech won? As many as you have. It’s 0-7 away from home, and 10-2 when it’s in the friendly confines. And why? It shoots far, far better.

It doesn’t come up with enough takeaways to crank up the transition points, but it doesn’t make mistakes and it’s not going to give away easy baskets.

Virginia is beatable. It’s going to come down to winning on the boards, managing every possession, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Can Virginia Tech get enough free throws to matter?

They don’t need to shoot a ton, but they need enough to at least play along in what should be a relatively low scoring fight. In the first meeting Virginia hit 12-of-13 free throws.

Virginia Tech made all of its free throws. All two of them.

It’ll be close throughout, Virginia Tech will have its chances to pull away, but it won’t be able to stop Virginia’s ball movement in clutch late situations.

Virginia Tech vs Miami Game Preview

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

Miami is struggling a bit.

It lost two out of its last three and three out of its last five, partly because it’s wearing down a wee bit. It’s coming off a run of four road games in the last five, there’s little to no help coming from the bench, and it’s showing in key moments in close late games.

The D isn’t forcing enough mistakes, and it’s not doing enough on the defensive glass. Virginia Tech moves the ball around way too well, it doesn’t turn the ball over, and it’s not going to make any big errors for fast break points.

However …

Why Miami Will Win

Miami’s bench doesn’t score. Virginia Tech’s bench really doesn’t score.

The team might be playing well over the last few games, but it’s a total disaster on the free throw line, there aren’t nearly enough takeaways, and doesn’t quite do enough on the offensive boards to take advantage of the Hurricane defense.

Miami is fine. It might be fighting a bit lately, but all three of the losses over the last few weeks were very, very close and could’ve gone the other way, the team is playing well, the shooting is okay, and it should be able to run the Hokies a bit with points on the move.

All that, and …

What’s Going To Happen

All three of the recent losses were on the road. At home the Hurricanes are a rock going 11-0 in Watsco. On the flip side, Virginia Tech’s big wins lately have come at home. Even worse, the team has yet to win true road game.

This will be a decent battle, but Miami will do too much on the move for the Hokies to keep up.

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

It’s not like the Hokies are getting wiped out.

They’re losing – seven in a row after starting the season 2-1 – but they were in most of the games with four of the losses by six points or fewer.

They’re failing to come up with the big plays at the right times to push through, but the defensive front hasn’t been bad against the run and the offense is getting its chances.

The Hokies haven’t allowed more than 28 points in over a month, and now they need a few breaks. That’s a problem because …

Bowl Projections

Why Liberty Will Win

The Hokies don’t create their own breaks.

They’ve managed just seven takeaways on the year with a mere four over the last eight games. The offense isn’t good at going on long drives, third down conversions are a struggle, and the team isn’t able to control the time of possession battle to settle everything down.

Liberty turns it over a lot, but it takes it away a ton, too – it cleans up its messes. It’s got the defensive front to be disruptive and force mistakes, the pass rush should dominate the Hokies offensive front, and the secondary should have a decent day.

Virginia Tech is 0-8 when it fails to complete 64% of its passes. Only UConn and UAB were able to hit that mark against the Liberty defense.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Virginia Tech will struggle to consistently score, but it’ll hang around in this just enough to make it interesting into the fourth quarter.

Liberty’s defense will clamp down in the fourth quarter, the running game will take over when it has to, and the loss to UConn last week will be put in the rearview mirror.

Georgia Tech vs Virginia Tech Game Preview

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

Jeff Sims should be back.

The star quarterback had foot issues and missed the Florida State game and most of the loss to Virginia. The O didn’t do much without him, and the team needs his rushing to crank things up.

It’s this simple for the Yellow Jackets – they’re 3-0 when the run for 180 yards or more, and ran for fewer than 125 yards in all five losses. The Virginia Tech run defense has been fine, but that’s partly because everyone is too busy throwing it.

However …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

Only West Virginia and Pitt were able to run for more than 180 yards on the Hokie defense.

The offense is sputtering, but the D has been able to hold up enough to keep the team in most games. Georgia Tech’s offense isn’t going to run away and hide with this.

Things have started to slip over the last few weeks, but North Carolina, West Virginia, and Pitt can all get the offense moving. Even with Sims, Georgia Tech is awful on third downs, doesn’t come up with enough points when the chances are there, and overall averages an ACC-low 306 yards per game.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Which team can make fewer mistakes and which one can take advantage of the errors on the other side? Georgia Tech is better at limiting the turnovers and penalties.

First one to 20 wins?

This should be interesting and tight, but look elsewhere if you want an offensive firefight.
