3 things the loss of Bud Dupree means for the Steelers

Steelers Wire takes a look at the potential impact of Bud Dupree being lost for the season.

We should know in the next day or two if the Pittsburgh Steelers worst fears are real. Early reports out Wednesday’s game with the Baltimore Ravens is that linebacker Bud Dupree is he tore his ACL late in the game and is lost for the season. If Dupree is out for the year here are the three big things it will mean going forward.

Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster credits defense for redeeming ‘sluggish’ offense vs. Ravens

Thanks to their defensive effort, the Pittsburgh Steelers managed a “W” versus the Baltimore Ravens.

Like a broken record, it’s been said week after week: A win is a win, no matter how ugly.

The Pittsburgh Steelers were visibly disappointed in their performance against the depleted Baltimore Ravens, and for good reason.

The game should’ve been a blowout, but instead it came down to the wire.

“We played sluggish, we had a bad start. Our defense saved our [expletive] again,” said a frustrated JuJu Smith-Schuster in a postgame press conference. “… In the next 12 days we got three games, and it is what it is. We just got to go out there and play.”

Tremendous defensive plays in the first half — a pick-six from cornerback Joe Haden and a pass breakup in the end zone by Minkah Fitzpatrick on the final play before halftime — are what won the game for Pittsburgh.

The Steelers offense, which has been solid for most of the season, played uninspired football.

“Wide receivers not catching balls, not making plays when they’re supposed to be made, going down in the red zone not putting points on the board,” Smith-Schuster said when asked about their deficiencies.

The offense will have a chance to redeem itself in just four days when Pittsburgh hosts the Washington Football Team on Monday.

Initial reports on Steelers LB Bud Dupree’s knee injury is a torn ACL

The news isn’t good for Bud Dupree and his knee injury.

If reports are true, the Pittsburgh Steelers were dealt a serious blow on Wednesday in their win over the Baltimore Ravens. According to multiple sources, the knee injury suffered by Steelers linebacker Bud Dupree at the end of the game is believed to be a torn ACL.

Dupree was having a huge season and paired with T.J. Watt to form the most formidable pass-rushing tandem in the NFL.

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin pulls no punches team’s performance: ‘It was junior varsity’

The Steelers had problems in all three phases on Wednesday’s win and Mike Tomlin wasn’t happy about it.

It was clear in his post-game press conference how disappointed Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was in his team’s performance on Wednesday against the Baltimore Ravens. Right out of the gate, Tomlin made it clear he was, as he put it, “really disappointed in our performance tonight.”

Tomlin even went so far as to call the team’s performance junior varsity and he isn’t wrong. Pittsburgh struggled in all three phases and nearly found themselves on the wrong side of a game that shouldn’t have been this close.

Tomlin made a point to note that even the defense didn’t play up to par. The Steelers gave up a long fourth-down run by backup quarterback Trace McSorley late in the game and then gave up a long touchdown to give the Ravens new life as time was running out.

The good news is, as Tomlin pointed out is these problems don’t require radical changes to improve. This is fortunate when you consider the Steelers have to turn around and play again in just five days.

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin’s analysis of the red zone problems: ‘Us sucking’

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin made it clear he wasn’t happy with how the receivers and tight ends played on Wednesday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers were fortunate to get out of Wednesday’s game with a win. Pittsburgh beat the Baltimore Ravens 19-14 in spite of a miserable effort by the Steelers in all three phases.

One area that really stood out was how poorly the Steelers played in the red zone. Drops were especially problematic for the Steelers’ receivers and tight ends which forced the Steelers to trade touchdowns for field goals and keep the Ravens in the game.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was visibly upset after the game and he held nothing back when talking about his concerns. When asked specifically about what he attributed the red-zone struggles to, he simply said, “us sucking.”

Harsh but true. You don’t expect to see guys like Diontae Johnson and Eric Ebron drop so many catchable passes. A win is great but Tomlin understands this is not the type of thing they can sustain if their goal is to continue to win football games. The Steelers got very lucky tonight to play against a struggling, shorthanded Ravens team.

Despite all the distractions, Steelers squeak out win over Ravens

The game we thought would never get here is finally over and the Pittsburgh Steelers come out perfect at 11-0. The game wasn’t exactly quality football on any front but given the circumstances, no one expected it. Pittsburgh was able to put the game away late and pull off a close 19-14 win.

Rust from a week off was evident and the Steelers never really shook it off on offense. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger might not need the practice to play well but clearly, his wide receivers do. By my count Steelers wide receivers had seven drops in the game and overall there were around 10 drops by Steelers skill position players.

Defensively, the Steelers stepped up when they needed to and even had to overcome some of their own lapses to hold off the Ravens. Pittsburgh sacked Ravens quarterbacks three times and got one interception cornerback Joe Haden returned for a touchdown.

The Steelers have very little time to waste as they now have to turn around and play the Washington Football Team on Monday afternoon.

Steelers LB Bud Dupree questionable to return with knee injury

The Steelers will be without Bud Dupree for the rest of the game.

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Bud Dupree left the game with around four minutes left to play with an apparent knee injury. He left under his own power but it was clear he was in pain. According to the team, Dupree is questionable to return.
