Iowa to Play in Front of Capacity Crowds? Not So Fast

Are the Iowa Hawkeyes about to play football in front of full home stadiums or are they just not committing to cutting ticket sales yet?

We’ve heard from most different levels when it comes to the amount of fans in the stands for college football games in 2020.

Early on we were going to be lucky to get college football played at all in 2020, something that we’re certainly not out of the woods on yet.

Then it was very limited crowds reserved for perhaps the closest family members only.

Then it was said to include at least students.

Then it was Iowa State unveiling a plan to sell roughly 30,000 season tickets and no single game sales for their 61,000 seat stadium.

Now the state of Iowa has a university that isn’t ruling out playing in front of a full house just yet as University of Iowa Gary Barta met with reporters this week and says they’re planning on opening up Kinnick Stadium this fall.

“We have 100 more days (until Iowa kick off) and by then, my guess is we’re going to learn a lot between now and then,” Barta said. “My staff and I are still planning for several different scenarios and the scenarios we plan for, can change by the day, by the hour, by the week, but as of today, we are still planning to open Kinnick up and have as many fans that want to join us, join us.” – Iowa AD Gary Barta

It sounds great and optimistic but the more Barta spoke the less likely it seemed that Iowa will actually be playing in front of capacity crowds, either.

“We’re having to plan for something less that that,” Barta said. “Whether it’s 75 percent or 50 percent or something less than 100. We haven’t at all let go the possibility of 100 percent. We’re realistic. We’re not expecting to have sellouts for every game by any stretch. But as of right now, that’s still one of the models that we’re planning. It’s all going to be based on health and safety of our student athletes, coaches and our staff that will be working the game or playing the game. We’ll make sure that they’re ready to go from a safety standpoint and then for our fans.” – Barta

So there, the University of Iowa isn’t ruling out playing in front of a capacity crowd at some point this season.

They just don’t exactly sound very optimistic about the possibilities of it, either.

Stay tuned, the only sure thing I know about anything this year is that it will probably only get crazier and more confusing before we get any actual resolution.

Boston Celtics release statement on George Floyd death, protests

The Boston Celtics released a statement on the George Floyd death and subsequent protests Sunday.

The Boston Celtics released a statement on the nationwide protests over the death of George Floyd.

With several Celtics players taking on active roles in participating and even helping organize peaceful protests, and the NBA and its wider community having an ongoing conversation on the matter, it was the right moment to address the events behind the protests.

The team released the following statement:

Like many others across the country, the heartbreaking and senseless deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, along with other recent events, have left the entire Celtics organization struggling with grief and anger.

During a time in which the phrase “new normal” has often been used as our nation has struggled with the devastation of a pandemic, we imagine and hope for a “new normal” where every citizen is afforded the same rights, has the same opportunities, receives the same treatment, and can peacefully enjoy every freedom promised to all of us.

The Boston Celtics have always stood for the ideals of equality, understanding, and respect. We can’t simply hope and pray for these things, we need to lead through our actions. We stand with our players, employees, partners, and fans in being committed to championing the change we need. We need to be honest about confronting racism and abuse of power. We can and must demand equality for everyone. We can and will respond by committing to being part of the solution.

Jaylon Smith Helping Notre Dame on Recruiting Trail?

Is a former Notre Dame star trying to help the Irish keep a commitment committed to ND?

Jaylon Smith is as talented of player as we’ve seen at Notre Dame at any position in recent memory.

The former Butkus Award winner as the nation’s top linebacker is now a Dallas Cowboy but hasn’t forgotten about his college whatsoever as he seems to be trying to help Notre Dame’s case for a current commitment.

David Abiara is a senior to be from Texas and a current Notre Dame commit.  He did however have reports circulate that he was nearing flipping that commitment to Oklahoma recently.

Smith took to Twitter to try and at least work some magic in the pursuit of Abira it would appear.

So maybe it wasn’t the most earth-shattering of tweets but it was compelling nonetheless to see one of Notre Dame’s biggest stars in recent memory reach out to a potential future Irish defender.

Will it help?

Who the heck knows but I’m certain at this point it won’t hurt.

Oklahoma athletics gives season ticket holders options in case of altered season

One of the main concerns about having a college football season in 2020 is if games cannot take place or the season is shortened entirely.

One of the main concerns about having a college football season in 2020 is if games cannot take place or the season is shortened entirely.

The money involved in college football is large. Major power-five conference stadiums seat north of 80,000 fans that spend money on tickets, food, beer and donate thousands and hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Oklahoma athletics sent an email to season ticket holders outlining options in case of an altered or reduced season, according to an email obtained by the OU Daily.

“We are hopeful that our 2020 football season will occur as scheduled,” the email said. “However, if the number of games are reduced, we will act in good faith by providing options for you to reallocate payments earmarked toward priority seating donations and season tickets.”

The OU Daily reports that the athletic department gave season ticket holders three options:

  • The first option for season ticket holders is to reallocate their ticket payment as “tax-deductible gifts for OU Athletics’ emergent needs.”
  • The second allows stakeholders to transfer their payment to the 2021 season or Sooner Club membership year.
  • Lastly, the third option for season ticket holders is to “request a refund as an exception to our refund policy.”

Oklahoma is still scheduled to begin the 2020 college football season on Sept. 5 against Missouri State.
