4 interesting stats from Steelers vs Browns

Here is a closer look at some of the Steelers numbers from last week.

Now that we’ve had some time to fully digest the Pittsburgh Steelers loss to the Cleveland Browns let’s dig into four interesting numbers from the game to think about as the team gets ready to start preparing for next week’s game against the New York Jets.

Steelers vs Browns: Grading the defensive positional units

The Steelers defense was a letdown on Thursday.

On Thursday night, we watched the once-proud Pittsburgh Steelers defense get run on by the Cleveland Browns. Cleveland had a plan and they stuck to it, not concerned about the Steelers vaunted pass rush or big-name stars. With what Pittsburgh has spent on this side of the football, the performance was concerning. Let’s hand out some grades for the defensive positional units.

Top 5 highest-graded Steelers from Thursday night’s loss

Quarterback Mitch Trubisky was the highest-graded Steelers on Thursday night.

Despite a strong first half, the Pittsburgh Steelers couldn’t pull out a win over the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night. This doesn’t mean all of it was bad. Pro Football Focus handed out grades for Thurday’s loss and you might be shocked at the top five.

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin says no quarterback change coming

HC Mike Tomlin was clear he’s making no big changes during this mini bye.

The Pittsburgh Steelers lost 29-17 on Thursday night but can now look forward to something of a mini bye week before they take on the New York Jets on October 2. If the team had any plans to make any changes to say quarterback, now would be the time to do it.

But head coach Mike Tomlin put any thought of that to rest in his postgame press conference on Thursday night. When asked if he would use this time to change at quarterback or even offensive playcalling, his response was “definitely no.”

Now that’s not to say between now and next week something couldn’t change but at least for now, quarterback Mitch Trubisky and offensive coordinator Matt Canada are safe.

Pittsburgh’s offense actually got off to a hot start on Thursday night before fizzling out at the end of the first half and never getting on track after halftime. This was in spite of a solid effort by an offensive line showing real growth.

Do you think Trubiksy will start against the Jets or will the team go with rookie Kenny Pickett? Let us know in the comments below.

Check out Steelers WR George Pickens’ ridiculous catch

Through the first two games of the season, Pittsburgh Steelers rookie wide receiver George Pickens had mainly been a decoy in the passing game. But it didn’t take long on Thursday night for quarterback Mitch Trubisky to get Pickens the football and Pickens made it count.

Check out the video below from the team’s Twitter account of Pickens hauling in a 36-yard one-handed catch with excellent coverage on him.

If the Steelers offense is going to be successful, Trubisky and Pickens need to keep making connections like this. The Steelers and Browns are tied at 7-7 early in the second quarter.

This week the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Cleveland Browns in their second division game in the first three weeks of the season. Both teams are 1-1 and desperate to stay at the top of the AFC North.

Cleveland’s offense is powered by a two-headed rushing attack and thier defense is always physical and athletic. Meanwhile the Steelers are still trying to find an identity on offense with new starting quarterback Mitch Trubisky and the defense is struggling without star linebacker T.J. Watt.

Cast your vote and tell us who you think pulls on the win in prime time. The short week really hurts the Steelers, moreso than the Brown. Cleveland knows what it wants to do and found a way to score 30 points. On the other side, Pittsburgh is scramblling to figure out what they want to do on offense and how to get in the end zone and the defense forgot how to rush the passer.

This one stings but the Browns find a way to beat the Steelers in Cleveland and Pittsburgh has some extra time off to think about the rest of the season and possible personnel changes. Browns 28, Steelers 17.
