In the end, the Pittsburgh Steelers couldn’t hold off the New York Jets but there is cause for hope despite falling to 1-3. Here are our big takeaways from the Steelers’ 24-20 loss to the Jets.

It seemed the Pittsburgh Steelers had guys going on and off the field all game long with one injury or another on Sunday. After the game, head coach Mike Tomlin offered updates on the various injuries suffered by the Steelers.

Safety Terrell Edmunds left the game early after a big collision and is currently in the concussion protocol. Defensive tackle Cam Heyward left the game on multiple occasions and even got an x-ray at halftime and is currently dealing with elbow and ankle injuries. Cornerback Cameron Sutton is being evaluated for a hamstring injury and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick has a knee injury.

Pittsburgh fell to the New York Jets 24-20 on Sunday dropping their record to 1-3 on the season. Pittsburgh now has to turn around and get healthy in time to travel to Buffalo next week to go against the Buffalo Bills.

Pickett-led Steelers lose thriller at home to fall to 1-3

Kenny Pickett almost saved the Steelers on Sunday.

There was a lot to be excited about on Sunday for the Pittsburgh Steelers but the outcome wasn’t one of them. Pittsburgh fell 24-20 to the New York Jets to drop to 1-3 on the season. However, it was the debut of rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett that should have fans excited for the future.

After a lackluster first half by Mitch Trubisky, head coach Mike Tomlin opted to bench him in favor of Pickett. In a half of football, Pickett rushed for two touchdowns, had three tipped passes intercepted and finished with 135 yards of offense.

Pittsburgh had the lead late but Jets quarterback Zach Wilson marched the New York offense down the field for the game-winning touchdown with very little resistance from an inconsistent Steelers defense.

Pittsburgh now has to start preparing for a brutal four-game stretch starting with the Buffalo Bills and decide if the starting job now belongs to Pickett.

Kenny Pickett in at QB for Steelers in second half

The Steelers have made a change at quarterback.

After another shaky half by Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mitch Trubisky, head coach Mike Tomlin made a change. The Steelers replaced Trubisky with rookie Kenny Pickett who the fans have been clamoring for the past several weeks.

Pickett was the Steelers first-round pick in 2022 and is expected to be the future of the position. But things didn’t get off to a great start as Pickett threw an interception on a deep pass to Chase Claypool on his first regular-season pass attempt.

Steelers K Chris Boswell breaks record with long field goal

Chris Boswell gets record-breaking field goal in first half.

After a bizarre series of events at the end of the first half between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets, Pittsburgh lined up for a field goal with no time on the clock. A really long field goal.

Steelers kicker Chris Boswell hit a 59-yard field goal with room to spare, breaking his own record for Acrisure Stadium by two yards.

Boswell has been the only scoring threat for the Steelers in the first half as they trail the Jets 10-6.

The Jets allowed the Steelers to hit that record-breaking field goal after a late hit on quarterback Mitch Trubisky by Jets edge rusher Carl Lawson negated an interception and long return.

Steelers elevate 2 defenders from PS to active roster

Pittsburgh shuffles their roster on Saturday.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbydbzmnr1bhxef player_id=none image=https://steelerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

On Saturday, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced they had elevated two players to the 53-man roster from the practice squad for their game against the New York Jets on Sunday.

The Steelers elevated cornerback Josh Jackson to fill the roster in the absence of cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon. Witherspoon has been ruled out for this game with a hamstring injury. Levi Wallace will start in place of Witherspoon versus the Jets.

Pittsburgh also elevated outside linebacker Ryan Anderson to the active roster. Should Anderson dress for the game, he could add some punch to a pass rush that has struggled since the injury to T.J. Watt.

A 1-2 team coming to Pittsburgh shouldn’t be a cause for concern for the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, 2022 is different as the Steelers also sit at 1-2 and need to stop the New York Jets this week to hold onto any hope of making the playoffs.

For the Jets, they get Zach Wilson back at quarterback but will be very thin at linebacker. The Steelers continue to be without linebacker T.J. Watt and will also be minus cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon this week. The Steelers offense continues to struggle while it finds its identity and a quarterback change could be coming.
