Notre Dame: Fighting Irish Wire Daily Recap (Edition 6)

Brian Kelly spoke about the latest on all things Notre Dame. Find out the headlines from all things related to Notre Dame sports here!

Brian Kelly met the media on Wednesday afternoon in a very non-traditional way.  That meant for quite a bit of football news. If interested you can hear what Kelly said in his entire 30+ minute press conference held through Zoom.  Or you can check out the latest on where things stand with the Navy/Ireland game this August.

Otherwise in football news we saw Cole Kmet get graded the best tight end by another draft outlet.  Jeff Feyerer has all of the information on that and offers his thoughts on the good and bad of Kmet as a draft prospect.

Jeff is also looking forward to Saturday night as ND Replay this weekend will feature an epic-finish to cap off the home Notre Dame careers of Mirer, Bettis and Brooks.  Jeff speaks for many around my age in saying how important “The Snow Bowl” was in forming a fandom.

In other news, some athletic directors are looking to expand the College Football Playoff and former Notre Dame star Jaylon Smith drew praise for his high school days as he was named a top-100 recruit of the last decade.

And finally – Geoffrey Clark has started a fun way in determining the best Mike Brey coached team of the last 15 years in basketball.  He’s using a simulation system to run his tournament and he began profiling the 15 teams in it Wednesday.  Follow everything related to that simulated tournament here over the next couple weeks.

Notre Dame: Fighting Irish Wire Daily Recap (Edition 5)

Much went on in the land of Notre Dame athletics even with no games being played. Find out all the latest in all things Fighting Irish.

Tuesday’s gone with the wind and we hope it was a good enough Tuesday for you.  We stayed busy at Fighting Irish Wire with some various different pieces of news that came out, some ranking videos to make sure and enjoy and a second day in a row of a dream scenario for Notre Dame fans to see their team play somewhere.

We start with the football team who the university’s video team put together a top ten for in regards to “Best Catches by a Notre Dame Tight End”.  It was a fun list an we discuss the impact over impressiveness of some of the catches and how we had trouble really arguing with much of it.  Continuing on the video front, Kyren Williams posted a workout video that recently got a lot of the Notre Dame fan base excited for his potential.  And finally, a new Notre Dame assistant coach helped get Ian Book and the other Irish quarterbacks a meeting with a Hall of Famer.

In the recruiting world, Rivals discussed where Notre Dame stands in their efforts to land a commitment from mega-recruit, running back Will Shipley.  We also got word of a mauler from Illinois who will be making an official visit in June.

In basketball, reports surfaced that Notre Dame will be one the eight teams to participate in the 2021 Maui Invitational if you’re looking for a reason to take a trip to Hawaii.  Our guy Geoffrey Clark found a unique way to determine Notre Dame’s best basketball team of the last 15 years and we came across the #NDTop10 video that is worth your time if you’re a sports fan at all as they count down the “Best Notre Women’s Basketball NCAA Tournament Moments”

And finally, a recent Notre Dame All-American and record holder is changing his NFL number.  Sorry if you bought a jersey last year, looks like you’ll just have to get another.

Notre Dame: Fighting Irish Wire Daily Recap (Edition 4)

What did you miss on Monday in regards to Notre Dame athletics? Get filled in right here, right now!

Good morning and welcome to Tuesday.  At least we think it’s Tuesday.  This whole working at home thing has made me really wonder lately though because every day is turning into Groundhog’s Day.

Here’s what was happening at Fighting Irish Wire in case you missed it yesterday:

Ever wondered what it’s like to live a day as Notre Dame’s starting quarterback?  Ian Book took you behind the scenes to find out.

The NFL released it’s All-Decade team and one Notre Dame product made the team.  It got us wondering if any player has dominated their position quite like Zack Martin since he came into the league.  We also share a Notre Dame player who should have gotten more consideration.

The news of the day nationally was the fact that The Masters is being moved to November.  That means a once-in-a-lifetime road trip possibility for Notre Dame fans.

That is of course if there is football in 2020, something Brian Kelly and several other college coaches commented on recently and Jack Swarbrick spoke to Paul Finebaum about on Monday.

Also, Notre Dame was in the news a bit again on the recruiting trail as they made the cut for one of the nation’s best corners and we found out more about where the Irish stand on a highly coveted receiver.

And finally – if you forgot to wish Notre Dame legend and 1964 Heisman Trophy Winner John Huarte a birthday then shame on you!  He was as responsible as any player for saving Notre Dame football in the mid-sixties.  The least you could have done was read our piece about his shocking Heisman winning season.

Have a great Tuesday (that is what day we decided it is, right?) and stay tuned for a ton more to come all day on Fighting Irish Wire.

Notre Dame: Fighting Irish Wire Daily/Weekend Recap (Edition 3)

Miss any Notre Dame news over the weekend? Catch up with the latest on all of it right here, right now!

In case you missed anything that happened with Notre Dame athletics this weekend then you’ve come to the right place as we recap you as quickly as possible right here.

There were no actual games played but the Notre Dame Athletics Page on YouTube live-streamed a replay of the 1993 win over Florida State while some heroes from that day offered commentary.  It brought back some great memories which I shared here.  If you’re interested, Notre Dame has released the entire 1993 home season as well, so if you’re bored just pull up this site and whatever you do, just make sure you don’t click on the Boston College game.

Is it still “too early” to give your pre-season rankings?  We found one outlet who officially declared it “Not Too Early” so we examined them, their formula and were surprised by how far another mid-west team ranked ahead of everyone else.

There was some recruiting news of note over the weekend as a pair of players included Notre Dame in their lists after making cuts of perspective schools.  Brock Bowers and Dont’e Thornton both did just that, click their names to learn more about each.  In basketball, a key transfer has Notre Dame on his remaining schools list after cutting things down on Friday.

Rivals updated their rankings for the 2022 class over the weekend and you can check out where some Notre Dame targets rank in those.

And finally for fun – our inagural FIW Tournament has come and gone as we’ve crowned the best Notre Dame football game since 1986.  The winner isn’t a surprise but the guy you see throw out the first pitch in the video included may be.

Plenty to come on Monday so keep checking out FIW throughout the day.  I hope everyone had a great weekend.

Notre Dame: Fighting Irish Wire Daily Recap (Edition 2)

We’re in a giving mood so we’ll give you the cliff notes version.  We here at Fighting Irish Wire have decided to give you a recap each morning of whatever the events of the day were involving Notre Dame.  If you need a description of the work we did yesterday you’ll find it here and if you just want all your links centralized with a little more description and organization with them, that should work here, too.

If you missed it Thursday morning then what is your problem?

OK, fine.

Thursday started on a sour note for me, personally.  Ed Farmer, the play-by-play voice of the Chicago White Sox became a friend of mine through work.  “Farmio” passed away Wednesday night and I wrote about how our mutual love for Notre Dame football helped us form a bond that lasted even after we’d stopped working together regularly.

If you’re looking for news related to recruiting, our guy Michael Chen was on top of that.  Check out his pieces on the expectations for a future Notre Dame signal caller and which ’21 recruit some experts think may flip his commitment from Notre Dame.

Geoffrey Clark was gifted a book about the history of Notre Dame football from decades ago.  He finally opened it and found out some interesting information regarding one of the strangest and most lopsided contests in Notre Dame history.

Finally, in regards to news we heard the latest on Notre Dame/Navy in Ireland from Brian Kelly, saw a report on the NCAA starting to wonder about the 2020 college football plan and if you’re looking for good news, Notre Dame was officially declared “Offensive Line U”by one of the most-respected media groups in all of sports.

And finally – ’88 Miami and ’93 Florida State rolled in our best games tournament and will meet in the championship. Which game are you voting for?  Cast your ballot before voting closes at midnight ET, Sunday.

Good morning (or afternoon if you’re getting here late) and happy Thursday.  I hope you’re all hanging in there in these strange and uncomfortable times that none of us have ever seen or lived through before.  Keep staying smart and staying safe and hopefully this thing will be over sooner than later so we can perhaps lose some of the additional anxiety we’ve all been handed for various different reasons the last few weeks.

The team here at Fighting Irish Wire will continue to be here putting in work even if sports aren’t being played.  Today we’re also excited to offer you the first in what will become a daily offering of the “Fighting Irish Wire Daily Recap”.

Each morning we’ll put out a post designed for those of you on the go as we’ll have a quick post updating you on anything you may have missed and share links to that content.

Here you go for the first edition:

April 1, 2020 provided plenty of news for college sports and Notre Dame fans alike even with the lack of games being played.  In what have been some dark days nationally, Lou Holtz was there to help rally the team we’re all a part of these days.  Meanwhile, on the anniversary of two Notre Dame national championships the football team made plenty of news in a variety of different ways.

The big story of the day was Brian Kelly who spoke to WSBT in South Bend for 20 or so minutes.  His thoughts on Kirk Herbstreit’s recent comments have begun gaining steam as a national story.

In the recruiting world no commitments or scholarship offers were made but the NCAA extended the recruiting dead period and news came out of a star, uncommitted football recruit sending a Notre Dame commit something very special for his birthday.

Will college football be played as we know it in 2020?  Brian Kelly wasn’t the only Notre Dame name making headlines as Jack Swarbrick offered his thoughts to Yahoo!

If you’re into NFL Draft coverage one outlet continued their love-fest of a specific Notre Dame prospect while it’s never too early for some to start looking ahead to the 2021 NFL Draft in which Notre Dame will likely have a big-time presence.

For fun – if you want to help Pete Sampson of The Athletic with a Notre Dame survey he’s conducting, go right ahead.  We’ve also gotten a list of bowl projections that are one – absurd to even think about in April but two – also a lot of fun to think about in April.

We have our Final Four in the 2020 FIW Tournament finishing up tonight. The favorites are running away with things but you have until 10 p.m. ET Thursday night to get your votes in.

Thursday at Fighting Irish Wire will bring information from a complete seven round mock draft that was recently released.  Just how many Notre Dame players get selected?  We’ll share and discuss.  We’ll also give a look back at those four games that made our tournament’s final four and share our memories from each.

As always – breaking news will come and things will pop up out of nowhere.  We’ll have you covered for all of it at FIW.  Have a great day and talk soon.
