Auburn vs Alabama Game Preview

Why Auburn Will Win

Auburn will get on the move and it’ll guard hard from three.

It wasn’t able to stop anything Kentucky wanted to do inside in a blowout loss, but when the defense is working and the offense is able to get on the move, the team is dangerous.

Alabama dominates on runs. Once the offense gets on the move and starts getting into a groove, forget it.

Auburn has the ability to force Bama to keep going inside, it’s good at cleaning up on the boards and keep this from getting out of hand early – like it did in the first meeting in a 77-69 loss – and it’ll ramp up the defensive intensity.

Auburn is a near-lock when keeping teams under 45% from the field, Alabama averages 45% shooting, and …

Why Alabama Will Win

Alabama doesn’t lose at home.

It’s not like it’s through the storm as a program, but it got through two nasty games against South Carolina and Arkansas, all four losses were away from Coleman.

Auburn’s problem isn’t the defense – it’s doing okay – it’s the lack of pop to keep up the pace when the games get rolling.

It lost seven of the last ten games mostly because the shooting from the outside hasn’t consistently been there, and the fast break points aren’t making up for it.

To be totally simplistic about it …

What’s Going To Happen

Auburn won’t be able to score enough.

It’s Alabama vs Auburn, so both sides will play at another level from the start, the defenses will be great, and it’ll all come down to one big Bama explosion to pull away.

Auburn vs Tennessee Game Preview

Why Auburn Will Win

The defense continues to be terrific from the outside, and overall the team is built to hold up in defensive fights.

It’s great on the offensive boards, the D is aggressive enough to force just enough mistakes to get on the move, and stopping the Vols from getting the offense going shouldn’t be a problem.

Auburn is 12-0 when teams fail to hit 30% from three, and 15-1 when keeping teams to 36% or under. Tennessee has only gone past that eight times and it’s going to struggle to get the O going here, but …

Why Tennessee Will Win

The Vol defense is a killer.

It’s second in the nation in scoring defense and No. 1 in field goal percentage D. For all of the good things Auburn does, it’s not great at coming up with points from the outside and it’s not anything special on the free throw line.

In a game where scoring every point will be like pulling teeth, the little things will matter.

The defense is the star, but the offense is a huge help by not giving it up in bunches. Auburn is 13-1 when forcing 12 or more takeaways, and the Vols haven’t been that sloppy all that often at home.

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t expect a whole slew of points.

Auburn will be great on the boards and will hang with Tennessee punch for punch, but it’ll come down to hitting that key three to push ahead. The home side will get that – and hit a few more free throws – to get out in a fun one.

Georgia vs Auburn Game Preview

Why Georgia Will Win

The Dawgs got them the first time around.

Georgia can D up from three, it’s good on the glass, and it’s just deep enough to keep everyone fresh. That, and it’s great on the free throw line, which turned out to be a big deal in the 76-64 win over the Tigers in early January.

Auburn couldn’t hit anything from three, it was a mess defensively with way too many fouls, and Georgia was uncharacteristically great at forcing turnovers. That all has to happen again.

Expect a whole lot of Auburn fouls – that’s what it does. Expect Auburn to not do much from three – it has to get on the move. Both of those things should work for Georgia, but …

Why Auburn Will Win

Georgia has hit a snag.

Just when it seemed like it was about to be a factor, it fell into a rut. That’s partly because it’s been on the road a bunch lately.

The team has been fantastic at home so far going 11-1, but that one loss was two weeks ago against Vanderbilt, and then it struggled to get by South Carolina. On the road it has been a disaster going 1-5.

The Dawg offense screws up way too much, and it won’t get anything from three against an attacking Auburn defense that doesn’t let anyone get a free look.

Along with all of the fouls, Auburn will generate a ton of takeaways.

What’s Going To Happen

This is big.

It’s not like a loss would mean things are slipping away for Auburn, but it lost two in a row, the defense hasn’t been amazing lately, and it could use a big outing to stop the slide now.

Auburn is 16-0 when allowing fewer than 74 points and 0-6 when allowing that many or more. Georgia will be held just under that in a great effort from the Tiger D over the first ten minutes and the last five.

Why Auburn Will Win

Is Lane Kiffin there yet?

Is he or isn’t he going to be the next Auburn head coach? At the very least that has turned into a nice distraction for an Auburn team that should be able to play loose and free in this.

No matter what, there’s going to be a big change after this. Either Auburn loses and the program’s new direction is underway, or it pulls this off and 1) it’s going bowling and 2) it means it beat Alabama.

The Tigers have been solid under interim head man and Tiger running back legend Cadillac Williams. They beat Texas A&M, held down the WKU high-powered passing attack in a 41-17 win, and they came into this with a rolling ground game that should be able to move a bit.

Tank Bigsby and Jarquez Hunter each hit the 100-yard mark against the Hilltoppers making it three straight games – and four in the last five – with 250 rushing yards or more.

The Alabama run defense has been solid overall, but LSU, Ole Miss, and Tennessee were all able to crank up the production against it. Now it’s Auburn’s turn.

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Alabama Will Win

It’s still crazy possible.

It would take a whole slew of things to happen, but Alabama still has a teeny tiny little bit of a shot at making the College Football Playo…

Okay, so that’s almost certainly not going to happen, but by any normal measure going 10-2 with a win over the arch-rival on the way to a New Year’s Six bowl is a great year. Of course, Alabama always expects more, but there’s still plenty to play for.

The offense should steadily be able to keep things moving. Auburn is bad on both sides of the line on third downs, the Tide defensive front should live in the backfield, and there isn’t enough coming from the Tiger passing game to be too worried about.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Throw out the Austin Peay scrimmage of last week, and for the most part Alabama doesn’t have a problem with turnovers. It’s not going to give up enough mistakes for Auburn to take over and win this.

Even so, the Tigers will be strong for about 20 minutes as they hang around and make it a battle. The Alabama offense will take over with a few quick scoring drives and will coast from there.

It might not be a total wipeout – the Tide will pull away late – but it’ll be a strong, efficient finish to a rough regular season.

Why WKU Will Win

The passing game is going to make this interesting.

The Hilltoppers are fourth in the nation through the air averaging 336 yards per game with a whole lot of midrange completions. Auburn has a decent pass rush, but that’s negated a bit by the style and quickness of the WKU attack.

Mississippi State has a slightly different offensive flow, but it was able to hit Auburn for 357 passing yards, Georgia was effective when it decided to throw, and Penn State’s Sean Clifford was deadly accurate.

The Tigers are 1-4 when allowing over 200 yards through the air. WKU has failed to hit 270 just once, but …

Bowl Projections

Why Auburn Will Win

The program perked up with Carnell Williams in as the interim head coach.

Things might have started with a loss to Mississippi State, but it was a good fight with the running game rolling. Last week it ran for 270 yards and the defense pitched its best game of the season in the 13-10 win over Texas A&M.

So how does AU deal with the WKU passing game? It runs and keeps on running.

Time of possession doesn’t matter to the Hilltoppers, so the Tigers should take advantage by grinding, keeping Austin Reed and that dangerous O on the sidelines, and more than anything else, getting good tackles out of the secondary to keep the short throws from becoming big plays.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Indiana had to hang on for dear life in the 33-30 win over WKU, but it came up with the win. That was the only time the Hilltoppers dealt with a Power Five program.

Auburn can’t turn it over like it has over the last few weeks – five in the two games under Williams – and WKU takes the ball away, but the SEC running game will make up for a slew of mistakes by pounding away for 250 yards.

WKU will get its passing yards, but a few late drives won’t finish with points.

Texas A&M vs Auburn Game Preview

Why Texas A&M Will Win

Devon Achane is going off.

There are a slew of issues on both sides of the ball in this hopelessly lost season, but the veteran running back has been a bright spot with 138 yards against Ole Miss followed up by a 122-yard day last week against Florida.

The A&M offense overall hasn’t been all that bad – over 400 yards in each of the last two weeks – and Auburn’s run defense has struggled.

The Tigers are 1-5 against teams that ran for over 130 yards, and they’d be 0-6 if they didn’t catch the epic overtime break against Missouri – a dropped ball for a fumble that would’ve been a game-winning score for the other Tigers.

Why Auburn Will Win

Running well isn’t guaranteeing anything with the Aggies.

They’re 1-4 when they get close to 130 yards or more, and the one win was saved by an Arkansas missed late field goal.

Auburn has its own running game moving, ripping up Mississippi State for 256 yards and four scores in the overtime loss last week, hitting Ole Miss for over 300 yards, and getting to 180 yards in five games so far, willing two of them.

A slew of parts are making it all happen, and it should all work against a stunningly mediocre Texas A&M defensive front that’s the worst in the SEC allowing 215 yards per game and close to five yards per carry. And you know …

What’s Going To Happen

A Cadillac Williams-coached team is going to want to run the ball.

The Tigers ran 46 times last week against Mississippi State, and they’re going to keep on grinding it out with an offense that’s doing a bit more on the ground than Texas A&M is.

As always, the Aggies will try to grind things down a little bit, and Auburn won’t have any issues with that.

Which team will break the gloom for the first time since late September? Auburn will be just a wee bit more effective at home.
