Why Army Will Win

Both teams do the same thing, but Army does it better, at least on offense.

The Air Force version of the ground game is the strongest among the military academies, but Army’s isn’t all that far off as it stepped up over the second half of the season. It might not be quite as dominant as it’s been over the last few years, but it hit 300 yards in four of the last six games and 400 in two of those, winning them all.

It’s Army, it’s not going to wing it around the yard, but it leads the nation in yards per completion – hitting over 22 yards on the few a game it completes – and that might be just enough.

It’s Army-Navy. It’s going to be low scoring and it’s going to be close. That one play through the air against one of the nation’s worst pass defense might be enough.

However …

2022-2023 Bowl Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

Why Navy Will Win

Navy can hit the big play, too, and it’s much, much stronger and more consistent against the run.

The Midshipmen haven’t allow 100 yards rushing in any of the last four games, and it’s not like it’s done it against a slew of lightweights stuffing Notre Dame, Cincinnati, and UCF over the last three games.

Army doesn’t just have to run to win, it has to explode. It’s been able to get past 200 yards without a problem – that’s great for anyone else – but it needs to get to 320. It’s 5-1 when it does and 0-5 when it doesn’t.

Navy allowed 200 rushing yards in the 13-10 loss to Air Force, and that’s been about it. Houston ran well, and East Carolina and SMU had a few yards, but that’s been about it against the nation’s fourth-best run defense.

But of course …

CFN Freshman All-America Team

What’s Going To Happen

It’s Army-Navy. Every Army-Navy game is close and low scoring, and it almost always defies any logic or analysis – a bad Navy team beat a great Army squad 17-13 last year.

2013 was the last time the game pushed past 38 points, and even then it was a 34-7 Army win. 2005 was the last time the two teams combined for 50.

It’s going to be low scoring, and as always it’s going to be as intense and fun as any game of the season. Navy’s defense will be a bit stronger, the offense will hold the ball a bit longer, and it’ll make it two in a row.

How To Watch: ESPN+

Why Army Will Win

The running game should work again.

It was stopped by Air Force and didn’t do enough against Troy in the 10-9 loss, and then it popped back up again against a bowl-bound UConn team. The Knights ripped off 5.5 yards per carry, controlled the game when they had to, and all was right with the world.

Can UMass stop the run? No.

It allowed 154 yards per game, but that’s partly because everyone is able to balance out the attack against this bunch. It allows close to five yards per carry and gave up more than 5.2 yards per pop five times.

Army is 4-0 when averaging more than 5.2 yards per carry and …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why UMass Will Win

Army is 0-6 when running for 5.2 yards or fewer.

The UMass defense might not be anything special, but it hasn’t been roasted too badly. It’ll give up 200 yards to the Knights, but it likely won’t allow the 300 or so to take over the game.

The third down defense is strong, the offense is great at controlling the clock, and there’s a shot it’s able to beat Army a wee bit at its own game.

The Army D doesn’t get behind the line enough, it’s not good at stopping third down tries, and the run defense allows over 200 yards per game. Along with that …

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Army has yet to win a game away from home this season.

It’s 4-2 at West Point and 0-4 on the road or in neutral site games. UMass hasn’t been able to win anywhere – it doesn’t have a victory over an FBS program – but at least it’s finally back in Amherst after not playing a home game since late October.

This game will be FAST – the two running games will keep the clock moving. UMass will keep it close for three quarters, but the Army ground attack will be a wee bit better.

Why UConn Will Win

Guess who’s going bowling?

With a running game that’s taking over games and a defense that’s taking the ball away, UConn is on a wonderful run of three straight wins with five victories in the last six games.

For the most part, the defense has problems against passing teams – not a problem this week. The defensive front got ripped through by Liberty, but the two takeaways helped make up for it.

UConn has forced multiple turnovers in five of the last six games – it won all five.

However …

Bowl Projections | 10 Best Picks Against the Spread

Why Army Will Win

Army doesn’t have a big issue with turning it over.

The running game hasn’t been as dominant as it needs to be, and the defense hasn’t quite showed up as expected, but the mistakes aren’t there.

Penalties are never a part of the picture, and while two fumbles against Troy proved costly, they weren’t the reason for the loss. The running game was able to move through the great D enough to make it a battle in a 10-9 loss, and now it has to get moving.

Army has the potential to beat UConn at its own game. Run, control the clock, get the defense off the field – that’s what the Knights do.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Army hasn’t had a whole lot of luck in a wildly disappointing year, but all three of the wins – and a good performance against UTSA – came at home. It’s 0-4 away from Michie.

On the flip side, UConn is 5-1 at home and 1-4 on the road. Granted, the competition has been a whole lot tougher outside of East Hartford, but in a low scoring game the home side’s ground game will be just a wee bit more effective.

Army vs Troy Game Preview

Why Army Will Win

The running game still works.

The Knights might have struggled against Air Force, but that always happens when the service academies meet up. Before that the O rolled for well over 400 yards in the previous few games, it’s amazing on third downs, averages over 300 yards per game and it’s going to control the clock.

Troy’s offense sputters to keep things moving, has a hard time in the red zone, and the line can’t generate a push. It’s awful in pass protection and doesn’t run, but …

10 Best Picks Against The Spread

Why Troy Will Win

The defense is a rock, especially against he run.

That’s sort of a plus against Army.

The team makes up for a slew of issues by keeping just about everyone to under 100 rushing yards – Ole Miss and Appalachian State, Louisiana, and Appalachian State were the only ones to get over that.

The defensive front is great at getting into the backfield and should be able to stop the Army offense before it gets started.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

It’s all fun and games until you see the Army offense up close.

But Troy will be able to handle it.

The defense mostly has problems against teams that can throw well, and that’s not Army. The Trojans will be able to sell out and keep the Army O from going off.

Army is 4-0 when generating over 410 yards and 0-4 when it doesn’t. Troy is 6-0 when it allowed under 400 yards.

Army vs Air Force Game Preview

Why Army Will Win

The ground attack is still the Army ground attack.

In the category of game recognizes game, Navy was able to do a decent job of holding down the Air Force offense in the 13-10 Falcon win, and vice versa. Neither team could run well and neither side could take over. The same applies to Army.

Air Force is having the better year and is stronger overall, but the turnover battle should be even, penalties shouldn’t be that much of a difference, and again, the ground game should be fine. After a lull against Wake Forest the Knights ran for well over 400 yards in wins over Colgate and ULM.

The defense has been rocky and there aren’t any tackles for loss, but injured star pass rusher Andre Carter is expected to be back, and …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Air Force Will Win

It’s all about the ground game, and Air Force does it better.

Neither team cares about the passing attack and both teams need to connect on the two to five throws it takes, but it’s all about the run.

Army has to run for 400 yards to win – it’s 3-0 when it does and 0-4 when it doesn’t, even when the ground attack works for over 200 yards or more. Yeah, Air Force is 4-0 when running for over 400 yards, but it also beat Navy when it ran or 200.

Army gives up 5.4 yards per carry and allowed 220 yards or more three times. Air Force allows 4.2 yards per carry and has yet to give up 200 yards, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The last four meetings between the two were low scoring and decided by one score. This won’t be any different.

Neither side will go off against the other – everyone knows what they’re doing – but Air Force will be just a wee bit sharper with its running game, the defense will be a little bit better, and Army will commit that one extra penalty.

It’ll be tight, but Air Force will break the two game losing streak to take the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy.

Army vs ULM Game Preview

Why ULM Will Win

This isn’t the Army we were all expecting.

It’s 2-4 and hasn’t beaten an FBS team – only taking out Villanova and Colgate – with the ground game not quite as dominant as it needs to be and the defense a massive disappointment overall.

The pass rush hasn’t been able to generate a thing, which is partly because the offense isn’t owning the time of possession battle like it needs to.

ULM is hardly perfect, but it’s able to own the clock enough to be a problem. The run defense hasn’t been bad – Alabama is the only offense to crush the Warhawk defensive front – and the biggest issue is a secondary that’s a lock to get hit for 230ish or more yards per game.

That’s not really a concern with Army.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Army Will Win

Just how bad is Army, really?

There’s no dogging the close loss to UTSA, the good road fight against Coastal Carolina, or the loss to Wake Forest, but the turnovers and inability to stop the run were a killer in the loss to Georgia State.

ULM doesn’t do anything particularly well offensively.

It can run a little bit, but it’s not going to gouge the Knight defensive front. It can throw, but it’s not going to crank up 371 yards like it did in the shootout against South Alabama.

– Predictions, Schedule CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

ULM will do more than just hang around, but it’ll never get control.

It has just enough ability to get into the backfield to keep Army from going off, but it won’t force turnovers and it won’t generate enough third down stops. It’ll go on a few scoring drives to keep this close, but the Knight offense and ground attack will take over when it has to in the second half.

Army vs Colgate Game Preview

Why Colgate Will Win

The Raiders have a whole slew of problems, but the run defense isn’t too bad.

There’s no pass rush, but that doesn’t matter against Army. Colgate’s offense doesn’t have a turnover problem and it doesn’t beat itself with a ton of penalties.

Army’s offense has been awful, but it’s not operating at peak efficiency. The running game isn’t quite as dominant as it should be and the defense isn’t holding up like it needs to, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Army Will Win

The Knights are catching a break against a Colgate team that’s not going put a ton of points up on the board.

The running game is okay, but the passing attack doesn’t rip off yards in chunks. Worst of all, it doesn’t hit its third down tries and doesn’t control the clock.

No, Army’s offense isn’t operating like it should, but it should be able to keep the ball for well over 35 minutes.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Army is overdue for a strong performance.

It couldn’t stop screwing up in the loss to Georgia State, and is never had much of a chance against Wake Forest. This week it’ll go on two early scoring drives and crank down the clock from there. Colgate won’t have the O to keep up.

Army vs Wake Forest Game Preview

Why Army Will Win

The running game still works.

There might be a slew of problems on the other side of the ball, and it’s not as smooth or as efficient as it should be, but the Army offense is still the Army offense. It had problems on the ground in the loss to UTSA, but it bounced back with 826 rushing yards and eight touchdowns over the last two weeks.

As always, the Knights are great on third downs, they’re hitting on the deep shots when they choose to throw, and they’re second in the nation behind Air Force in rushing.

On the other side, the Wake Forest run defense is okay, but it hasn’t dealt with anything like this.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Wake Forest Will Win

The Army running game still works, but this isn’t the Army team it’s supposed to be.

It’s having massive turnover problems – the style of play can’t handle a slew of mistakes – it’s not controlling the clock like it needs to, and it’s getting hammered by teams that can throw.

No, Wake Forest hasn’t seen a running game like Army’s, but Army hasn’t dealt with a high-powered passing attack like it’s about to see.

Coastal Carolina is brutally efficient through the air, and UTSA’s Frank Harris is a terrific passer, but Sam Hartman and the Wake Forest attack will stretch the field and keep it going.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Please, college football gods, can there be a repeat of the 2021 70-56 Wake Forest win – at least in the offensive fun show that it was?

Army ran for 416 yards and five scores, Wake Forest threw for 458 yards and five touchdowns and ran for four more, and it was one of the season’s wildest games.

Wake Forest has more of a defense this time around. It’s not going to be a rock against the Army running game, but it’ll force a few turnovers to go along with a typically great day from Hartman – he won’t be pressured enough.

Army vs Georgia State Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

The Panthers are better than their record.

Okay, you are what your record says you are, and the 42-41 home loss to Charlotte was inexcusable, but losses to South Carolina, North Carolina, and Coastal Carolina were all decent, forgivable, and somewhat competitive.

The downfield passing game has been there. and it’s working partly because the line is giving Darren Grainger time to operate. The running game was stuffed by Coastal Carolina, but it was strong in the other three games, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Army Will Win

Blah, blah, blah … can Georgia State stop the Army running game?

Sort of, but not really.

The Panthers don’t generate much pressure, and while that’s not the worst thing in the world against the Army style of offense, they give up rushing yards in chunks.

Coastal Carolina was able to run well, and now it’s Army’s turn to be Army.

Navy was able to beat East Carolina by connecting on a few downfield throws, and Air Force can wing it when needed. Army threw it 18 times against UTSA when the ground attack didn’t roll like normal, but against Villanova …

Time of possession.

That’s the problem.

Georgia State might be playing better, but it doesn’t do much to run the clock and grind in any way. That’s partly why it’s the worst team in the country in time of possession, holding the ball for just under 24 minutes per game.

Army? It’s not nearly the ball control powerhouse it normally is, but it will be this Saturday.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Army Will Win

A passing attack? Army?

It’s been a tough start with losses to Coastal Carolina and UTSA, but the Knights have the nation’s most efficient passing game with Cade Ballard hitting 70% of is 20 throws for 309 yards and two scores, and Tyhier Tyler throwing for two touchdowns on his five attempts averaging over 26 yards per pop.

But it’s the running game that has to take over.

Coastal Carolina is brilliant at controlling the clock, and UTSA has enough of a defense to hold up against what the Knight brought. Army should be able to run the clock for close to 35 minutes like it normally does.

What’s Going To Happen

Villanova’s defense hasn’t been anything special against he run so far, and now is when Army should be able to do things like it normally does – and with a hint of a passing game to go along with it.
