Deion Sanders says that college football needs this major change

Deion Sanders talks to RG3 about a change in college football that he thinks needs to happen immediately.

On the most recent episode of Robert Griffin III’s podcast RG3 and The Ones, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders asserted his biggest complaint with college football today.

Deion tells Griffin of a rather disingenuous strategy that he has seen other programs use, calling it “negative recruiting.” Sanders says that multiple recruits have told him that schools will try to sway a recruit by talking harmfully about other schools the recruit is considering, including Deion’s Buffaloes.

“Now, kids have recorded conversations with head coaches — not just assistants — head coaches, downing us and selling us out and just talking about us like a dog,” Sanders said. Coach Prime goes on to tell Griffin that there should be no place for this in the sport.

“I don’t allow our coaching staff to ever comment on another school… You don’t have to put another school down to put us up. I don’t play that.” Sanders made it very clear to his staff that if he found one of them doing this, they would be fired immediately.

As many know, Sanders has never been one to shy away from confrontation, and it appears that he has not been letting this “negative recruiting” slide. “I just politely call the head coach and say ‘Look here man, I don’t really know you, I wish the best for you, but be careful, because when these kids bring phones into your meetings, you are exposed to certain things. I’m not going to put you out there, but just keep my name out of your mouth,’” Sanders tells Griffin.

After going 4-8 in his first year as head coach, it appears that Sanders might have some additional motivation going into the 2024 season.

Deion Sanders has been receiving calls from players at Alabama, among others

With the retirement of Nick Saban, multiple programs have been affected, and Colorado is looking to take advantage.

It was inevitable that Nick Saban’s retirement from Alabama would lead to a domino effect that the college football world was not ready for. However, it may already be going further than most thought.

A week after the announcement of his retirement, programs across the nation are feeling the impact of the sudden news. The uncertainty of programs moving forward has led to players opting to transfer.

On the most recent episode of Robert Griffin III’s podcast RG3 and The Ones, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders said that the sudden retirement of Saban has led to an influx of players from the affected schools calling Colorado as a potential transfer destination.

In the interview, Coach Prime says “[Saban] is so powerful and so strong that he is affecting three programs… And guess what, all of those kids are calling us right now.”

Sanders refers to the programs Alabama, Washington, and Arizona. After Nick Saban retired, the Crimson Tide chose Washington coach Kalen DeBoer as Saban’s successor. That led to Arizona’s coach, Jedd Fisch, replacing DeBoer at Washington. This is what Deion was referring to, as it appears players from these schools are looking for new locations to play.

The transfer portal is in full effect and does not appear to be slowing down anytime soon.

Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders out against Utah

The Buffaloes quarterback finishes the 2023 season with 3,230 passing yards and 27 touchdowns.

Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders will miss the Buffaloes’ game against Utah.

The junior quarterback left last week’s game against Washington State with numbness in his hand, and he did not return.

Sanders’ 2023 season comes to a close with 3,230 passing yards and 27 touchdowns, inside the top 10 in the nation in both metrics entering the week. He’s completed 69.3% of his passes for 7.5 yards per attempt, and he threw just three interceptions this season.

Sanders is eligible for the 2024 NFL Draft, so it is possible he has played his final game of college football if he chooses to declare

Colorado wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who leads the team with 908 receiving yards, also will not play against the Utes.

Warren Sapp to join Colorado coaching staff next season

The Hall of Fame defensive tackle has not officially been announced by the school, but coach Deion Sanders brought up the hire on Wednesday.

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders won’t be the only Pro Football Hall of Famer on the Buffaloes coaching staff in 2024.

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Warren Sapp will join the Colorado staff next season, Sanders said Wednesday. The move hasn’t been officially announced by the school yet, but the head coach talked about Sapp during his coach’s show.

“I’m excited about Coach Sapp,” Sanders said. “He’s going to be invaluable… the recruits as well, they’re going to love him.”

Sapp has been around the program unofficially in the 2023 season, and Sanders said he’s already made a big impact on the program. He will likely coach the defensive line in some capacity.

Deion Sanders maintains positive tune about Colorado’s future

After the Buffaloes were eliminated from bowl eligibility with a seventh loss, the first-year Colorado coach said his team is on schedule.

The last few months haven’t gone as some people expected for Deion Sanders and Colorado. The Buffaloes have lost seven of their past eight games, and the first-year coach lost eight pounds recently after he battled flu-like symptoms.

Regardless of the 4-7 record, Sanders insisted his program is on the pace he wants on Tuesday.

“Did we sell out every game? Did this team get better? Is hope instilled?” he said. “What’s the problem? Somebody tell me what’s the problem. So what you’re trying to say is we didn’t live up to whose expectations? Because I know this team. I know what this team is capable of doing. So what didn’t we do?”

Sanders also said he encouraged his players to be confident despite outside noise, questioning if humility and silence truly go hand in hand.

“What does humility really mean? So if I’m sitting up here, talking about a program, positively with energy and life and aspiration and passion, that means I’m not humble?” the coach asked.

Sanders rounded out his comments by saying the Buffaloes would win again the way they had early in the season, promising the college football world would never be the same after the final product in Boulder.

Colorado State head coach Jay Norvell fires shots at Deion Sanders

Colorado State head coach Jay Norvell fired shots at Colorado’s Deion Sanders ahead of their week 3 matchup

On Saturday afternoon, the Colorado State Rams and Colorado Buffaloes will faceoff in their rivalry matchup, the Rocky Mountain Showdown, at Folsom Stadium in Boulder.

The Saturday night showdown will be the first matchup in the rivalry since 2019. Since that last meeting, both schools have seen new head coaches take over their respective programs. With that, Colorado State head coach Jay Norvell has decided to ensure the fire in the rivalry hasn’t smoldered despite the recent struggles and coaching changes for both programs.

On Wednesday night, Norvell fired shots at Colorado head coach Deion Sanders during his weekly coaches show.

“I sat down with ESPN today, and I don’t care if they hear it in Boulder, I told them, I took my hat off, and I took my glasses off, and I said, ‘When I talk to grownups, I take my hat and my glasses off. That’s what my mother taught me,” Norvell said in reference to Sanders’ frequent attire of wearing a baseball cap and a pair of sunglasses during his interviews and press conferences.

Sanders would appear to respond to Norvell’s comments on Thursday morning via X.

“Forget what they think or say about u because the only that matters is what you think & say about yourself,” he posted. “I need u to stay Positive & persistent. Today will be better than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow. Believe that!”

Considering the circumstances, Norvell’s willingness to stoke the fire is bold.

The Rams are in their second season under Norvell after going 3-9 in 2022, thanks mainly to having the country’s 129-ranked offense that averaged just 13.2 points per game last season. The Rams fell to Washington State 50-24 in week one before having off week two.

On the other hand, despite going 1-11 in 2022, Colorado has been very impressive in Deion Sanders’ first season with the program. In week one, the Buffaloes upset last year’s national championship runner-ups, the TCU Horned Frogs, 45-42 before thrashing Nebraska in week two, 36-14. With the back-to-back victories, the Buffaloes find themselves within both the US LBM Coaches Poll and AP Poll’s top 25.

The Buffaloes’ offense has posted over 450 total yards of offense in each of their first two games, including 906 passing yards as quarterback Shedeur Sanders, son of Deion, has been spectacular, completing 69-of-89 passing attempts for 903 yards and six touchdowns.

Entering the matchup on Saturday, the Buffaloes are considered more than a three-touchdown favorite over the Rams. In a game that was already anticipated to be a blowout, could Norvell’s comments backfire for Colorado State?

If Saturday’s game does end up being a blowout, don’t be surprised if Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes’ keep their foot on the pedal. This past weekend, Shedeur Sanders called Colorado’s win over Nebraska “extremely personal” after he believed the Cornhuskers disrespected Colorado by meeting on the Colorado logo at midfield before the game. The younger Sanders also referred to comments made by Rhule in the offseason about how Deion Sanders was rebuilding the Colorado program.

It’s already clear that Sheduer doesn’t take disrespect to his team or his father lightly, which will surely make his performance on Saturday all the more intriguing to watch.

With Colorado being the media darling of the college football season thus far, Norvell’s comments will surely become another layer of storylines discussed ahead of Saturday night’s kickoff in Boulder.

Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. MT in Boulder and will be televised nationally on ESPN, while Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff show will be live from Boulder on Saturday morning for the second straight week.

Shedeur Sanders shines in Colorado’s upset of TCU

The Shedeur Sanders show has arrived in the FBS.

The Deion Sanders era of Colorado Buffaloes football started off with a bang on Saturday afternoon. The Buffaloes, expected to be among the worst teams in the Pac-12, went into Amon G. Carter Stadium and delivered a stunning 45-42 upset of the No. 17 TCU Horned Frogs.

The star of the game was Deion Sanders’s own son, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who was making his FBS debut.  The 2022 SWAC Offensive Player of the Year completed 38-of-47 passing attempts in the win, passing for 510 yards and four touchdowns. The 510 yards was a Colorado school record.

With Sanders under center, Colorado totaled 565 total yards and scored 28 points in the second half to hold and defeat the Horned Frogs after taking a 17-14 lead into halftime.

The Texas native could not do it on his own. Also with impressive performances was two-way star transfer Travis Hunter as well as true freshman running back Dylan Edwards.

Hunter, the former No.1 recruit in the country in the 2022 recruiting cycle, who committed and ultimately signed with Deion Sanders and Jackson State out of high school, played both ways the entire game for Colorado. On the offensive side of the ball, he totaled 11 receptions for 119 yards, while defensively, he recorded three tackles and one pass deflection.

Edwards, a freshman out of Derby, Kansas, recorded 159 yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns, including five receptions for 135 yards. His incredible debut included touchdown receptions of 46 and 75 yards.

All in all, the first game of the Deion Sanders era at Colorado could not have gone much better for the Buffaloes. While they will have to clean up defensively, allowing 541 total yards, including 262 on the ground, Sanders and the Buffaloes couldn’t ask for a better start to their 2023 season.

The Buffaloes will look to improve to 2-0 next Saturday against a former Big 12 rival, Nebraska.
