R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl What Happened

WKU got hot early, put the game away, and South Alabama wasn’t able to do much to respond until it was way too late. Austin Reed threw three touchdown passes – four for the game – and receiver Dalvin Smith threw a trick play touchdown pass on the way to a 31- 3 halftime lead.

It was 41-10 WKU late in the third, but South Alabama’s Carter Bradley threw three touchdown passes including two int he last 19 minutes. It didn’t matter. WKU got enough points less than 20 minutes in.

That wasn’t the normal South Alabama team. It was brilliant all season and tight defensively, but WKU and Reed were too sharp and too good in the first half. It wasn’t a sloppy game, but two USA turnovers didn’t help and the inability to keep drives going early on was a killer.

Austin Reed, QB WKU
He was supposed to have transferred to Louisville, but came back and decided to stay. He completed 36-of-55 passes for 497 yards with four touchdowns and a pick. He also ran for 25 yards.

R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl Fun Stats

– WKU WR Dalvin Smith caught six passes for 145 yards and a score, and he completed his only throw for a 25-yard score. Jaylin Hall (138 yards) and Malachi Corley (114 yards) also hit the 100-yard mark.

– South Alabama WR Devin Voisin came up with a game high 11 catches for 154 yards and a score. QB Carter Bradley threw for 360 yards and three touchdowns with two picks.

– Total Yards: WKU 677 – South Alabama 421

R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl What It All Means

Wow. WKU came into this a bit undermanned, but Austin Reed was there slinging it around and running the offense, and that was it. For a team that had a bit of an inconsistent season, Reed was brilliant from the start, the passing game clicked like it was supposed, and this was over fast.

Give the WKU defense a little credit, too. It held up early, got the ball back to Reed, and boom. Now that’s two straight bowl wins under head coach Tyson Helton, and he’s 3-1 in the last four years. The program has won six of its last eight since losing its first ever bowl appearance in 2012.

What was that, South Alabama? Against UCLA in a tough loss against Troy in a 10-6 battle of a loss, and in game after game, the offense found ways to keep moving early on and the defense was good at holding up in a 10-2 season. This loss doesn’t ruin a great season, but it sours it a bit.

The program still hasn’t won a bowl game – it’s 0-3 – but this was the first winning season since moving up to the FBS level in 2012. It was the first time it got past six wins. This was a special year, but the first 20 minutes of this were shocking.

South Alabama vs WKU R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl 5 Things To Know

R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

South Alabama might be the best Power Five team you didn’t pay any attention to this season. You probably didn’t notice it came this close to beating UCLA, and you probably didn’t notice that it was that 32-31 loss and a 10-6 battle with Troy away from being perfect. It didn’t exactly roll a slew of killers, but it has a solid offense, it controls the clock, and it brings one of the best run defenses in the country.

WKU brings the fun. No, it doesn’t care about time of possession, and it’ll see your solid offense with a high-octane passing attack. It lost star QB Austin Reed to the transfer portal – he was supposedly headed to Louisville – but he changed his mind and came back. Here comes the offensive show.

The Hilltoppers have played in eight FBS-level bowl games and won five of them. Head man Tyson Helton won two of his three – including the 2021 Boca Raton with a 59-38 explosion over Appalachian State.

This is just the third bowl game for South Alabama and the first under head coach Kane Wommack. It’s a showcase moment for him and the program that lost its first two bowl tries and hasn’t been in one since losing to Air Force in the 2016 Arizona.

The New Orleans Bowl always seems like it should be fun – the matchups are always strong – but the last five have been relative blowouts and seven of the last eight were decided by 13 or more. It’s been the Sun Belt’s world winning the last four.

CFN Bowl Expert Picks: Dec 16-19 | Dec 20-27

Why South Alabama Will Win The R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl

How did South Alabama get it done this year?

It’s been a rock defensively, it doesn’t make a slew of mistakes or turnovers, and the ground game was one of the best in the nation. La’Damian Webb ran for over 1,000 yards and 13 scores, but he’s not alone in the rotation of runners including QB Carter Bradley.

Run well, rely on the defense, limit the turnovers – which, to be fair, come in bunches, but the team overcomes them. But against WKU it’s about holding up against a ton of midrange passes.

The Jaguars haven’t had too many problems surviving the games against teams that throw a ton. The wins haven’t been easy, but they can handle WKU thanks to a strong-tackling back-seven.

However …

Why WKU Will Win The R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl

Getting back Austin Reed changes the game.

He’s a veteran passer who’s been around the block as a big bomber for West Florida at the D-II level before fitting right in at WKU. The South Alabama defense might be terrific, but it’s about to get thrown on 50 times for at least 300 yards.

But it’s not just about Reed and the air show. The WKU offense can run well enough to mix it up, and the defense isn’t just along for the ride. It might have had a bumpy finish in a blowout loss to Auburn and a tough 32-31 fight with Florida Atlantic, but few teams in the country do more to take the ball away.

WKU’s defense is high-risk/high-reward. It can get run over, but it makes up for it with a ton of forced fumbles. It’ll give up big plays through the air, but it also generates a bunch of picks.

It’s just this simple. For all the good things the offense does, and as good as Reed is, WKU is 7-0 when coming up with two or more takeaways, and 1-5 when it doesn’t.

But …

Texas State vs South Alabama Game Preview

Why Texas State Will Win

The Bobcats showed they can get the offense moving through the air from time to time, and they’ll have to keep firing away with no prayer of getting the ground game working.

They’ve been close in a slew of losses – the last three games were all losses decided by a total of ten points – but their own run defense has been good and they’re taking the ball away in bunches.

They have to make it five games in the last six with multiple takeaways, they have to keep the chains moving to force the Jaguars to press a bit, and …

10 Best Picks Against The Spread

Why South Alabama Will Win

The formula in this is simple.

Score early, rely on the defense, and assume Texas Tech won’t have any shot of doing anything on the ground.

South Alabama is 6-0 when allowing fewer than 100 rushing yards, Texas State hasn’t been able to get to 90 rushing yards in five games, and they don’t have a big enough passing game to make up for it.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Texas State can’t stretch the field enough to loosen up a South Alabama defense that will do a decent job of getting off the field to let the offense control the clock.

It won’t be the smoothest of wins, but it’ll be effective. It’ll take a little while for the USA running game to take over, but it will.

South Alabama vs Arkansas State Game Preview

Why South Alabama Will Win

The defense continues to be fantastic.

Troy’s was a wee bit better last week in the 10-6 Jaguar loss, but this bunch should be a rock against an Arkansas State team that can’t run and has a hard time putting points on the board.

The South Alabama passing game is accurate and effective, and the Red Wolves can’t top any of it. It’s the other side, though, that should take over as the game goes on against an ASU offensive line that can’t keep anyone out of the backfield.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Arkansas State Will Win

The Red Wolves can sling it around a little bit – but it’s going to need to get creative considering the injuries in the backfield.

No, the ground game isn’t all that great because the offensive line doesn’t generate a push, but the defense hasn’t been totally miserable at times against the run. As long as it can get off the field once in a while, there will be plenty of chances to fire away and keep pressing.

The offense will have to open it up a bit no matter what. That might be a problem because …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

ASU QB James Blackman didn’t go against Louisiana and the offense stalled.  He’s hardly the only injury problem for the Red Wolves as they battle hard, but just don’t have the parts to make up for the problems on defense.

South Alabama will keep this conservative. It doesn’t turn the ball over on a regular basis, and it won’t do that this week as it grinds a bit, gets the passing attack going with a slew of productive midrange throws, and it should all work.

The D will be the backstop if the Jaguar O isn’t connecting.

Troy vs South Alabama Game Preview

Why Troy Will Win

The Trojans have been terrific over the last month, and there but for a wild finish against Appalachian State they’d by on a six-game winning streak and the star of the Sun Belt.

It’s not like they’re playing a bunch of weak teams with wins over Marshall, WKU, and Southern Miss along the way. What’s working?

The offense is struggling and there are big problems on third downs, but the run defense is dominant. It’s a statistical thing, but it’s also indicative of how the team controls games – it’s 0-2 when allowing 100 rushing yards, and 5-0 when it gives up fewer.

That’s a problem because …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why South Alabama Will Win

South Alabama runs for 165 yards per game. It’s not a dominant ground game, but it hasn’t been close in any game to being under 100 yards.

Troy might be on a great run, but South Alabama is a botched moment against UCLA away from being 6-0.

It’s own run defense has been great – it only allowed more than 100 yards twice – unlike Troy the team is fantastic on both sides of the ball on third downs, and then there are the takeaways.

South Alabama has only turned it over multiple times twice – once was in the loss to UCLA – and is +8 overall. Troy is -1.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams are playing well. Troy finds a way, South Alabama is just that good.

Neither team will run well, but both can throw well enough to keep things moving. Turnovers won’t be a big deal, but South Alabama will be on the right side of that. Penalties won’t be a big deal, but Troy will be on the right side of that.

The difference will be on third downs. South Alabama will be far better and will do a better job of controlling a fantastic must-watch game that will go a long way to deciding the Sun Belt race.

ULM vs South Alabama Game Preview

Why ULM Will Win

Can the passing game stay sharp?

The Warhawks might have lost to Coastal Carolina 28-21 last week, but Chandler Rogers went off hitting 27-of-30 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns.

This isn’t a high-powered Warhawk passing team, but South Alabama can be thrown on with quick midrange throws. There isn’t enough of a pass rush from the USA defensive front to matter, and on the other side there’s no downfield passing on a consistent basis to take advantage of the shaky ULM secondary.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why South Alabama Will Win

The Jaguars just keep getting it done.

There’s nothing flashy about what they do. They’ll come up with 200 passing yards 150ish running yards, and they’ll find ways to come through when needed.

They’re just one weird play against UCLA away from being 5-0 and a national big thing. As long as the takeaways keep coming, that will continue.

ULM doesn’t turn the ball over all that much, but it gave it away five times in the last three games. USA is red hot at forcing mistakes with ten takeaways in the last three games.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The fun will continue.

South Alabama will be consistent against the ULM defense with the balanced attack keeping control of the game throughout.

ULM will stay in it and have its chances, but two turnovers early and no takeaways will make it too hard high a hill to climb on the road.

Louisiana vs South Alabama Game Preview

Why South Alabama Will Win

Is Louisiana sort of mediocre now?

It lost two straight on the road to Rice and ULM with the running game getting stuffed in both and the defense getting rumbled over too easily.

Is South Alabama sort of great now?

It should’ve beaten UCLA – everything went wrong late in a 32-31 loss – and it came back to roll a not-bad Louisiana Tech last week. What’s going right?

The Jaguars are doing a nice job of controlling the clock, there aren’t enough turnovers to matter, and the run defense has been a brick wall.

Again, over the last two weeks the Ragin’ Cajun ground game hasn’t done enough, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Louisiana Will Win

Louisiana is fine. It’s not the killer it’s been over the last few seasons, but it’s back home, the offensive line should be okay, and the takeaways need to come.

South Alabama might not give the ball away in bunches, but it turned it over twice against UCLA. Louisiana has only turned it over three times – the two last week against ULM were a killer – and the D has come up with 12 takeaways so far.

If they can force a few mistakes, and if the Jaguars can continue to have huge issues with penalties, that might all be just enough for Louisiana to slip on by. But …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

South Alabama is playing too well – outside of the flags.

The front should be able to hold up against the run, the offense will be balanced, and in a year when the Sun Belt is coming up with big surprises week after week, the college football world will start to pick up this might be one of the league’s stars to watch out for.

Louisiana Tech vs South Alabama Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

The Bulldogs battled well against Clemson in a 48-20 loss, the passing attack was fine against Missouri, and the ground game rolled in the win over Stephen F. Austin. This is the first game against someone who’s truly their own size.

Even with the 1-2 start, the offense has been scoring, the passing attack under Sonny Cumbie is doing Sonny Cumbie passing attack things, and now it gets to go against a South Alabama defense that doesn’t generate enough of a pass rush and doesn’t get behind the line.

Give the Bulldog quarterbacks time and they’ll roll. But …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why South Alabama Will Win

Louisiana Tech turns it over way too much, giving the ball aways eight times with seven picks.

No, the Jaguars don’t generate a pass rush, but quarterbacks are only hitting 55% of their passes so far and they’re not consistent enough.

For all of the good things the Louisiana Tech passing game has done, it’s only connecting on 55% of its throws with seven touchdowns to go along with the seven picks.

The Jaguars have a nice mix of offensive things happening. The ground game is enough for the Bulldogs to worry about, QB Carter Bradley and the passing game have been great over the first few games, and …

10 Best Predictions Against the Spread

What’s Going To Happen

South Alabama doesn’t have the turnover issues Louisiana Tech does. The Jaguar defense hasn’t done much to take it away, and it needs to be more disruptive, but it’ll control the game.

It’ll be the USA running game that takes over and helps the O keep the ball for well over 35 minutes.

Marshall vs Troy Game Preview

Why Marshall Will Win

What was that?

Marshall pulled off the stunner against Notre Dame, everyone was fired up, and then came the three giveaways and the total meltdown in the secondary in a strange loss at Bowling Green.

The team is still strong.

The running game continues to be fantastic, the defense is better than it showed against the Falcons, and the team has the right mix to get out of a tough road game like this alive.

The Troy defense is awful on third downs, it doesn’t run the ball a lick, and it’s about to get pounded on by the Herd backs.

But …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Troy Will Win

Bowling Green has a good passing game, but should it have hit the Herd for 300 yards and four scores? Maybe.

Gunnar Watson is about to find out.

The Troy offense did enough to beat Appalachian State, and so did the D up until the final play in the brutal 32-28 last second loss.

Appalachian State has a great ground game, and it was kept from going off. The Troy defensive front should be able to hold up against the Herd, Watson and the passing game will push for 300 yards, and …

10 Best Predictions Against the Spread

Will the lack of a Trojan running game matter? It won’t help, but the defense will come up with a strong performance at home with two takeaways and a good game against the Marshall rushing attack.

Troy’s heart will get broken for the second week in a row, but this time it’ll be on a field goal.
