UNLV vs Utah State Game Preview

Why UNLV Will Win

Is UNLV … good?

It pushed Cal way too hard, and then it ripped up North Texas 58-27 with a great day from the ground game to put the dream of a bowl game on the table.

All of a sudden, the Rebel pass rush is great, there aren’t the big mistakes there’ve been in the past – just one turnover so far – and the defensive front is holding up just fine.

Utah State can’t keep the chains moving, the passing game isn’t doing enough, and it can’t close out drives with points scoring just 43% of the time in the red zone.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Utah State Will Win

The Aggies are having a slew of issues, but the line is coming up with plenty of tackles for loss and they’re not having too many problems with turnovers – the D is keeping things neutral.

UNLV might not be screwing up, but there are a few too many penalty yards – it’s getting hit with the big kind for lots of yards per flag – and defensively it has to hold up against the pass a bit more.

North Texas and Cal were each able to throw well – Cal connected on the midrange throws and UNT bombed away – and Utah State could use the help.

The Aggies threw against UConn in the season opening win, forget about the Alabama game, and nothing worked in the loss to Weber State.

With two weeks off, there’s been time to work out the kinks.

10 Best Predictions Against the Spread

What’s Going To Happen

Utah State will be better offensively than it’s been ver the last few games, but the defense won’t be able to help the cause.

The run defense will give up over 200 yards, UNLV will do a good job of limiting the mistakes, and one of the rising stories in college football will continue.

The Rebel defensive front will be good enough when it has to.

Washington vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

The Cardinal running game worked against USC.

It ripped apart Colgate, but that was expected. Against the Trojan D it kept bashing away with 221 yards and three scores – the offensive line looked better than it had in years.

The pass rush was solid in the first two games, Tanner McKee is an accurate enough passer to take advantage of a Washington defense that’s going to concentrate on EJ Smith and the running game, and the overall parts are in place to grind.

The team has only played two games, but the penalties haven’t been there – just seven in the two games – the kicking game has been solid, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Washington Will Win

Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers.

Stanford fumbled it away six times in the first two games and gave up nine turnovers in all. Washington’s defense isn’t doing enough to take the ball away over three weeks, but if it can get a few turnovers it might be lights out.

Caleb Williams and USC ended up throwing for close to 350 yards and four touchdowns against the Cardinal, and now it’s Michael Penix Jr’s turn.

The former Indiana Hoosier has been unstoppable with close to 1,100 passing yards and ten touchdowns with one pick in the first three games. The O is fourth in the nation in yards, sixth in scoring, and everything is operating in midseason form.

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

The Husky win over Michigan State was almost perfect. It was a dominant performance, Penix Jr. continues to bomb away in Kalen DeBoer’s offense, and yet the team let up enough to get pushed this week to play a full four quarters.

Stanford won’t turn it over like it did in the first few games, and it’ll run just well enough to keep this from getting out of hand in the first half. However, Penix will be fantastic, the UW offense will be more balanced than it was against Michigan State, and the fantastic start will continue.

USC vs Oregon State Game Preview

Why USC Will Win

Nothing is slowing down this offense.

Caleb Williams is in total command, the running game stepped up against Fresno State – the balance was great in the 45-17 win – and so far it seems like the faucet gets turned on whenever it needs to.

It doesn’t always work this easily, but the Trojans rolled at will against the Bulldogs. Oregon State needed a late score to survive at Fresno 35-32.

The Beavers have a good enough offense to hit the USC defensive front hard, but the pass rush isn’t there. Don’t get any pressure on Williams, and he’ll do whatever he wants.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Oregon State Will Win

The offense is rolling.

There’s good balance, the running game is averaging five yards per carry, and Chance Nolan is connecting on the downfield passing game enough to open it up.

It’s going to be the ground attack, though, that has to take over.

USC is giving up 4.8 yards per carry and allowed Rice, Stanford, and Fresno State to rumble, but all three had to abandon what worked to try keeping up the pace.

Oregon State has to get the 1-2 punch of Deshaun Fenwick and Damien Martinez going early, it needs to keep Williams and company on the sidelines, and …

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

USC’s defensive front might be having big problems against the run, but there’s no issue with the pass rush.

Oregon State’s offensive front has been great in pass protection, strong for the running game, and it’s going to have a terrific game. It’s not going to be enough.

The energy will be amazing, the team will be jacked, and it’ll be a fun first half. Then USC’s offense will wake up and take over halfway through the third quarter.

The defense that will get hit hard will make up for it with two late takeaways.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 3

Oklahoma vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Kansas State Will Win

What the heck was that?

Where was the Kansas State that dominated Missouri and looked like it was about to make a big run in the Big 12? That could still happen – it was a 17-10 loss to Tulane that obviously doesn’t matter in Big 12 play – and now the running game has to get working again.

The offense isn’t screwing up with just two turnovers and minimal penalties so far, the defense has been terrific on third downs – it’s third in the nation in passing efficiency defense – and overall the team is +5 in turnover margin.

Yes, Oklahoma has been great over the first three weeks, but it hasn’t actually played anyone with a pulse.

UTEP, Kent State, and yeah, Nebraska. Kansas State represents a massive step up in competition, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Oklahoma Will Win

What do you do against inferior competition? You drill them in easy games that get everything sharpened up for what’s coming.

Oklahoma has been close to flawless to start the Brent Venables era. It’s not the flashy team of the Lincoln Riley era, but the defense has been nasty and there hasn’t been a hint of drama so far.

One turnover. The Sooners lost a fumble against Nebraska, and like Kansas State, penalties aren’t an issue.

The pass rush and defensive front should be able to live in the Wildcat backfield, the run defense that’s allowing 2.8 yards per carry should be solid, and considering there’s little to no passing game to worry about, the secondary should be able to cheat up enough to make a difference.

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas State has a funky style that could make this interesting.

It’s not going to screw up, and it’s going to hold the ball for over 35 minutes. However, the OU defense is playing well, there’s absolutely no downfield passing attack coming from Martinez, and the balance of the Sooner offensive O should be too much to overcome.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 3

Oklahoma vs Kansas State Prediction, Line

Oklahoma 34, Kansas State 17

Arizona vs Cal Game Preview

Why Arizona Will Win

The win over North Dakota State was massive.

That’s not just any old FCS team that Arizona took down. That’s probably the eventual national champion that made its name by taking out FBS teams to go along with all of the playoff success.

The Wildcats held up. They didn’t turn the ball over, they got hit with one penalties – flags haven’t been a problem – and the passing game was effective enough to keep things moving in the 31-28 win.

Even with the loss to a high-powered Mississippi State team and it’s passing game, the secondary has been great, there’s no real worry about the Cal ground game, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Cal Will Win

Cal was within a bobbled ball away from possibly being 3-0.

Granted, it would’ve taken overtime against Notre Dame if the last gasp Hail Mary was answered, but the team held up well, the defense was solid, and now it has a chance to get off to a good start in the Pac-12 with a home game it must win.

The Cal offense has yet to lose a fumble, there aren’t enough penalties to matter, and the two interceptions didn’t make a difference. Arizona might be good, but it needs help with a few breaks, and it’s not going to get them.

In an even game, it might be as simple as this – who has the better field position?

Arizona has one of the worst punting games in the Pac-12 so far, Cal leads all conference teams averaging 42.6 yards per boot, and …

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Does Cal have enough offense to push through?

Mississippi State has one of the nation’s best passing games – that got it done against the Wildcats. North Dakota State has one of the best offenses in the FCS – that made it interesting with close to 300 rushing yards. Cal was able to throw well on UC Davis and UNLV, but Arizona is a bit more efficient than those two.

Don’t expect fireworks. Neither offense will be able to open it up, the Cal defense will be just a wee bit better at getting off the field, and special teams will make a big difference.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 3

Results So Far: 28-12-1

1) We’re FINALLY done with most of the FCS vs FBS games. The silly season is over and conference plays kicks in full force, which means …

2) Now we settle in.

Everyone overreacts after Week 1, and then everything is skewed a bit after Week 2. After Week 3 we can pretty much figure out how things are going, and that’s why the theme of the week is this …

Go with what you know until proven otherwise.

For example, I misfired last week by not going with Oklahoma -10.5 over Nebraska. We know Nebraska is bad, and until proven otherwise, the idea is to go against it when the spread is reasonable, like it was against the Sooners. Of course OU won in a walk.

You’ll see what I mean, starting with …

Click on each game for the preview

10. UMass at Temple

POINT TOTAL 43.5
ATS PICK UNDER

Fair warning: there’s a spiteful aspect to this pick.

Rutgers -17 over Temple was my No. 1 call of last week, and it wasn’t even close. Now the Owls owe me.

What do we know, and what did we learn from that disaster? The Temple defense is pretty good.

The offense didn’t do much of anything, but the defense held Rutgers to just over 200 yards, and that was after stuffing Lafayette.

Is there any concern that the Owl O could go off on a UMass defense that gave up 42 to Tulane and 55 to Toledo? Not really, and if it does, it’s not likely to get up to 40 and the defense might be able to take care of the rest.

UMass will score, but it should hang around 10-to-14. This will get dicey late, but this should come in around the high 30s.

Okay, now deep breath as I ditch the theme for this next pick, and we shall never speak of it again …

9. Iowa at Rutgers

POINT TOTAL 33.5
ATS PICK Over

I hate this pick.

I hate picking this game, I hate that I feel compelled to add this to the list, and I hate that I’m feeding this to a trusting public that might actually watch this abomination if it invests in it one way or another.

I know, I know, I’ve hammered Iowa unders HARD so far this year, and it’s been a breeze.

How obnoxious have Iowa games been? The total points scored in the three games is 54. You know how hard that is to do?

As my standard line has been this season, you could set the total for an Iowa game at 1.5 and I’d still go under. Ha, ha – we all had a good laugh, killed some time, and …

If the final score in this is 3-2, fine.

A point total of 33.5 is just too obscene. If you take the over and it doesn’t work, it’s not your fault.

Now that I’ve gone off the rails …

8. Virginia at Syracuse

POINT TOTAL 55
ATS PICK Under

I don’t like this pick either, but for an entirely different reason …

Friday night games are weird.

Everyone’s rhythm is off, there’s a strange vibe, crazy things happen, and they generally fail to follow any logic or reason.

And I know, I don’t have to add this game to the list – just like I didn’t have to put Iowa vs Rutgers on here – but if things go to form and we go with what we know, including it is a moral imperative.

Virginia just doesn’t score.

The Illinois loss got to a total of 27, and the win over Old Dominion last week ended up at 30.

Could the Cavaliers find their mojo and start winging it around like they did in 2021? Yeah, but they haven’t done it yet.

Syracuse hung 48 on the board against UConn, but that’s UConn – Virginia’s D is okay. The Purdue game was a relative shootout that went back-and-forth late, and that only got to 61 and went over on the late TD pass.

This has a far better chance of hanging around the 20s for each team than the 30s.

[lawrence-related id=551302]

7. Tulsa at Ole Miss

POINT TOTAL 65.5
ATS PICK Over

I keep waiting for Tulsa’s offensive fever to break, but it’s not happening.

It’s been one of he biggest stunners of the year so far – Tulsa leads the nation in passing after three games.

It’s averaging 413 yards per outing after bombing away on Wyoming, Northern Illinois, and Jacksonville State to get there – no one else is averaging more than 389. The O has needed to crank it up in shootout after shootout, and to be warned, there’s one big concern here.

The Old Miss defense has been outstanding.

It allowed just 13 points in three games, but it hasn’t faced a strong passing game since the 28-10 win over Troy to kick things off.

This has a few things to like. It starts with the Rebel offense finding its groove – it should handle most of the 65.5 on its own. That means Tulsa will keep firing to keep up, there should be a few late points, and something very doable like 40+ish to 20ish should combine to get to 66.

There are more point total picks to come, but until then, going with what we know …

6. Florida Atlantic at Purdue

LINE Purdue -17
ATS PICK Purdue

It’s scary when things seem this simple.

Florida Atlantic’s defense has been awful against the two decent teams it faced, and it hasn’t dealt with anyone like Purdue yet.

The Owls have a slew of decent things going their way, but they’ve been abysmal against anyone who can throw a forward pass – they were ripped to shreds in the 41-38 loss to Ohio, and were hit for 339 passing yards by UCF in the 40-14 loss.

By the way, Purdue likes to throw.

Everyone is on FAU, and I’m not entirely sure why other than Aidan O’Connell is iffy. Even so, Purdue will throw for 400 yards and score in the 40s.

If you think the Owls have 24ish points in them on the road against a 1-2 Big Ten team that desperately needs a good performance thanks to last second losses to Penn State and Syracuse, okay.

Utah vs Arizona State Game Preview

Why Utah Will Win

Anything interesting happening at Arizona State?

Yeah, the storyline is the firing of head coach Herm Edwards, but if the team doesn’t get trucked by Eastern Michigan the change isn’t made.

Basically, the team isn’t playing well enough.

The Sun Devils have been a disaster on third downs with the lack of a consistent passing game a big issue. The pass rush isn’t helping the cause, there aren’t enough big stops from the D, and here comes the brutish Utah offense that’s not going to do anything too crazy.

The Ute passing game is more than fine, but it’ll be the pounding running game that should take over. How did Eastern Michigan win last week? It powered away for over 300 rushing yards and two scores.

Firing Edwards isn’t going to change the run D right away. However …

Why Arizona State Will Win

Can interim head coach Shaun Aguano make any sort of difference right away?

The Sun Devils have playmakers. Emory Jones is a solid all-around quarterback, Xazavian Valladay is a good back, and the defensive front has the ability and talent to be much, much better than it showed against Eastern Michigan.

For all of the issues over the first three games, the offensive line hasn’t been awful, the secondary is okay, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, there’s a problem.

Utah isn’t going to get cute. Cameron Rising and the passing game might be playing well, but the offense is going to power away behind its terrific offensive line, it’ll control the clock, and it’ll grind its way to the win.

Arizona State will come out with a good effort, and it’ll give it a good push, but it won’t be able to hold up against the Ute lines.

Texas vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

That was a dangerous landmine Texas just sidestepped.

UTSA is a solid team, the Longhorns were banged up and coming off the heartbreaking loss to Alabama, and everything appeared set up for a massive letdown. Instead, this team showed it might really be different.

Hudson Card was fine with Quinn Ewers out, Bijan Robinson went off – 183 yards and three touchdowns on a hurt ankle – and everything went fine in the 41-20 win. And why?

The defense.

The running game rolled for almost 300 yards, but the biggest difference this year is a Texas D that’s actually tackling people. The overall stats might not be great, but it’s only allowing 17 points per game, the pass defense has been good enough, and yeah, the offense has been good through the injuries.

Texas Tech’s offense hasn’t kicked in yet. The line hasn’t been great, the seven turnovers in the last two games are too many, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Texas Tech Will Win

There’s going to be a learning curve, but eventually the O will work.

It hasn’t been the Western Kentucky high-octane attack of 2021 – that’s what it’s supposed to be under offensive coordinator Zach Kittley – but the passing game has been okay, there’s just enough of a running game to do something, and things should be far better once the turnovers slow down.

The biggest difference, though, is the defense. It shut down the Houston running game and kept NC State to just 270 yards in last week’s 27-14 loss – the four turnovers by the O did the team in.

The run D is the second best in the Big 12, the passing attack leads the conference – even if, again, it’s not going ballistic – and Texas is going to have to work in more of a grind than it might like.

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech has enough of a pass rush to be a bother, and the run defense so far has been terrific. That might be enough to keep this close. It also helps that the Texas D doesn’t take the ball away in bunches.

Quinn Ewers is at least expected to dress for the game, but Texas will win on another solid day from Robinson and a great performance from a pass defense that will hold up throughout.

It’ll be a fight, though.
