The league includes Washington State and Oregon State which are quasi-members of the Mountain West.

Those two schools will play seven games against the Mountain West but they are not eligible to win the conference title.

Mountain West Football’s Updated 2024 Matchups Released

The Mountain West revised its college football schedule to include games against wayward Oregon State and Washington State.

What’s new?

The vagaries of college football realignment didn’t directly impact the Mountain West Conference over the last calendar year, but the shockwaves of moves across the country resulted today in a revised slate of matchups that includes the Oregon State Beavers and Washington State Cougars, the two Pac-12 programs left behind by their conference mates’ exodus.

When it was announced that the conference would do away with the Mountain and West divisions in 2022, the conference announced a rotation that would protect two games for each team and extend through the 2025 season. A multitude of Power 5 programs had other plans, however, and when the Big 12, Big Ten, and ACC raided the Pac-12 for ten of its teams throughout 2023, it left Oregon State and Washington State standing alone.

Here are the home and away games that the Mountain West had previously unveiled for 2024:

Air Force, Nevada, and San Diego State will host the Beavers while Boise State, Fresno State, and New Mexico will do the same for the Cougars. Conversely, Colorado State, San Jose State, and UNLV will travel to Corvallis; Hawaii, Utah State, and Wyoming will head to Pullman. None of the games will count as part of the conference standings, however, meaning that each Mountain West team will have seven conference games rather than the usual eight.

The changes, as you might expect, have differing impacts on every Mountain West team’s pre-existing schedule. Air Force, for instance, will get to face Oregon State at home instead of Hawaii, but Colorado State now travels to Oregon State and Nevada rather than Boise and San Diego. As DNVR Sports’s Justin Michael noted, it will be the first time since 2010 that the Rams and Broncos do not face each other. Similarly, Wyoming will now host San Diego State and Utah State rather than Nevada and UNLV.

One interesting twist is that the two teams who played in the Mountain West championship game this month, Boise State and UNLV, are now set to square off at Allegiant Stadium rather than Albertsons Stadium next year. Exact dates for the Mountain West schedule will be released at a later time, but next year’s title game is slated for Saturday, December 7, 2024.

Washington State vs UCLA Game Preview

Why Washington State Will Win

The Cougars can play just enough defense to keep this close.

They were able to do it the first time in a tough 67-66 loss to UCLA up in Pullman, and that D can travel. It’s able to keep scores low and the games in range, the offense will keep cranking it up from three and hope to generate points in bunches, and everything has to work.

UCLA does a lot of things right, but it doesn’t do much from three, it doesn’t get to the line, and there’s a problem if Wazzu can get hot from the outside.

But …

Why UCLA Will Win

Washington State has a wee bit of a problem on the road.

It was able to get by Arizona in a stunner a month ago in Tucson, but it’s 2-7 overall in true road games.

The defense is able to keep the team in games, but the offense just doesn’t have the firepower to get on the move and generate easy points when the threes aren’t dropping. It’s a struggle for the O to get to 70 home, and it’s like pulling teeth for the attack to get there on the road.

UCLA will force way too many turnovers, it’ll get it’s own offense rolling, and …

What’s Going To Happen

20 in a row.

UCLA has yet to lose at home this year and it’s been amazing in Pauley going back to last season.

No, this won’t be any sort of a shootout, and that’s just fine with the Bruins. They do defense better, they’ll dominate the turnover battle, and they’ll push through in a wee bit of a grind.

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Washington State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Cougars miss from the Pac-12 slate?

Washington got to miss USC and Utah last year, and now it’s Washington State’s turn to catch the mammoth break. The Trojans rolled Wazzu 30-14, the Utes won a 21-17 fight, and now they’re been replaced with Colorado and UCLA being left off the Pac-12 schedule. That’s a solid deal.

Not all is perfect with the Cougar slate, though.

Washington State Football Schedule What Really Matters

Washington State gets five Pac-12 road games. One of them is Washington, but that counts. That also means four of the last six games are away from home, and it gets even worse than that.

The Arizona State game is on the road on October 28th. The only thing that matters about that – besides the travel – is Tempe, Arizona is probably going to be nicer weather-wise than Pullman.

Arizona? That’s a home game, but the weather probably won’t be that bad on October 14th. Colorado is used to playing in snow and cold – if that happens – meaning Stanford on November 4th is likely the only team to potentially be affected by the surroundings.

Washington State Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

The Cougars were able to win seven games last year even with USC and Utah to deal with. This schedule is just workable enough to hope to at least his the 2022 mark.

Wisconsin is a home game, but this should be a far more dangerous Badger team. Going to Colorado State and dealing with Northern Colorado shouldn’t be a problem.

Stanford, Arizona, Colorado. None of them went bowling, and all three are home dates. Take care of at least two of the non-conference games, handle the winnable home dates, and pull off a win at, say, Cal and/or Arizona State, and all should be okay.

Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl Presented by Stifel What Happened

Jake Haener threw two touchdown passes and Jordan Mims ran wild as Fresno State got up 16-0 in the first half and coasted from there. Washington State managed a one-yard Nakia Watson touchdown run late in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs answered with a touchdown drive of their own on the way to 13 unanswered points.

Washington State couldn’t get the offense consistently moving. QB Cameron Ward was held to just 137 passing yards, the ground game ran for 45 yards, and overall, the lines couldn’t hold up against the Fresno State fronts.

Fresno State controlled the clock and the game, coming up with third down stop after third down stop with a steady pass rush that kept pressuring Ward. On other side, Washington State was missing a slew of key parts – especially at linebacker and receiver – and it showed. The Cougars struggled way too much against Mims once he had a little space.

Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl Presented by Stifel Player of the Game

Jordan Mims, RB Fresno State
He ran 18 times for 209 yards and two touchdowns and caught two passes for 27 yards.

Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl Presented by Stifel Fun Stats

– Total Yards: Fresno State 501. – Washington State 182

– Fresno State QB Jake Haener completed 24-of-36 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns with no picks.

– Average Yards Per Carry: Fresno State 6.8 – Washington State 1.6

Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl Presented by Stifel What It All Means

Washington State might have been missing several important players, but it was still ugly. The offense couldn’t move, the normally nasty defense couldn’t make up for it – not having a slew of good linebackers certainly didn’t help – and it was a rough way to finish.

For all of the good things the program did this season, it closed out with a blowout loss to rival Washington and then this. It’s the third bowl loss in a row for the program – the last win was in the 2018 Alamo under the late Mike Leach – and now it’s 2-6 in bowls since 2003.

Fresno State won its fourth bowl game in a row. It took six seasons to do it, but technically, it hasn’t lost a bowl since 2014.

With this, and with the way the program roared back after a rough start, it closed with a Mountain West title and a bowl win to make it a second straight ten-win season and the fourth double-digit victory campaign in six years. Three of those seasons came under head coach Jeff Tedford.

Why Washington Will Win

The offense continues to be dominant.

It’s No. 1 in the nation in passing, No. 1 in third down conversions, and it’s all starting from an offensive line that’s giving Michael Penix Jr. time to operate.

It’s the design of the offense to get the ball out of his hands in a hurry, but the offensive line is also getting the job done. Washington State has a pass rush and can get behind the line, but it’s going to struggle to do enough to be a bother. Even when it does get to the quarterback the secondary gives up yards.

The Cougars might have won last week, but Arizona’s Jayden de Laure threw for 357 yards, and Penix should push for at least that many.

Washington is 6-0 when throwing for over 350 yards, but …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Washington State Will Win

The Washington State defense has been terrific.

Ie might give up yards and do a lot of bending, but it holds up well. It’s strong against the run – that’s not going to be too much of a concern in this – and while it won’t come up with a ton of sacks or tackles for loss in this, it’ll bring enough pressure to hustle things up a bit.

Offensively, it goes against type, but Wazzu is at its best when it’s running. It’s 6-1 when it runs for over 55 yards and 1-3 when it doesn’t, and that shouldn’t be a problem against the Washington defense – only Michigan State was held to under 60.

No, it’s not like the running game has to rumble for a gajillion yards, but as long as it’s effective enough to add a little balance to the short range passing game, it’ll keep the chains moving against a defense that’s awful at coming up with third down stops.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can Washington hold up against the Washington State defense needs to keep the score low?

The Cougars might be known for their passing offense, but they’re not quite built to keep up in a back-and-forth firefight with the Husky offense.

And that’s the problem. Wazzu is 7-0 when holding teams to under 21 points and 0-4 when allowing 21 or more.

Washington has yet to score fewer than 24. Penix will be too good at keeping the chains moving in the second half.

Why Washington State Will Win

The Cougars got the two wins they needed to get bowling.

It was a good season with a few nice early wins, a power outage was a problem on a three-game losing streak, and then everything perked back up against Stanford and Arizona State to get there.

This isn’t the most consistent team, but it’s finding ways to beat the mediocre teams with a great presence in the backfield thanks to one of the league’s best pass rushes. That and the run defense are the keys to a program that’s used to winning with a high-powered passing game.

What’s Going To Happen

The Wazzu defense has only come up with multiple takeaways once in the last six games.

The first part of the equation will happen in an interesting afternoon game with the Wildcat offense pushing through in the fourth quarter with a late scoring drive to finally break through.
