Washington State vs Cal Game Preview

Why Cal Will Win

Everyone saw the Bears come up just short in the loss to Notre Dame, but they’ve been very quietly playing very, very well.

The 20-14 win over UNLV seemed like too close of a call against a mediocre team, but as it turns out, it was a strong defensive performance against a breakthrough offensive team.

Arizona was coming in off a big win over North Dakota State, and it couldn’t stop anything the Cal tried to do on the ground.

The team has been relatively adaptable. It got a good defensive performance against the Irish, got Jack Plummer and the passing game going in then first few weeks, and last week Jayden Ott ran for 274 yards and four scores against the Wildcats.

Control the clock, win the turnover battle – it can and should do both in this, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Washington State Will Win

The Cougars have been great.

They survived Wisconsin with a few key takeaways in a gut check performance when the offense wasn’t going well, they got into a wild fourth quarter shootout in the loss last week to Oregon, and all along they’ve been solid up front.

The pass rush has been among the best in the nation so far, the running game has had its moments – even if that’s not the team’s mode of transportation – and transfer QB Cameron Ward has shown his experience and ability through  tight moments and a few mistakes.

The team should be able to pull this off at home, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Can Cal with the turnover battle?

The Bears have been air tight with the ball so far with just two turnovers, and Washington has had issues with mistakes.

The Cougars have turned if over ten times in four games with at least two giveaways in each. They’ve been able to survive the problems, but the giveaways will keep Cal in this.

And then Ward and the passing attack will overcome the errors.

Oregon vs Washington State Game Preview

Why Oregon Will Win

That’s the Oregon we all thought we were getting going into the season.

Getting rocked by Georgia – as it turns out – isn’t any big deal this season, but everyone abandoned the idea of the Ducks being good after the ugly 49-3 loss.

The 70-14 win over a not-bad Eastern Washington team from the FCS was good, the dominant 41-20 win over BYU last week was terrific.

The offense has been balanced over the last two weeks, Bo Nix has been solid, and the running backs are ripping off yards in chunks as the lines are taking over.

The offensive front has yet to allow a sack, it blasted away on the strong BYU defensive front, and it’s going to grind away on the Cougars.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Washington State Will Win

Oregon’s running game is good, and the offensive line is fantastic. Are either as tough or as nasty as the Wisconsin ground attack behind that offensive front? Close, but not really.

Washington State was able to hold up just fine against the bully, beating Wisconsin and it’s tough offense and great defense 17-14. It wasn’t pretty, but it found a way.

In this, Wazzu can pull this off by keeping everything moving. As good as the Oregon defense might be, it’s not able to come up with enough third down stops.

Georgia hit 9-of-10 third down tries, and Eastern Washington and BYU were able to connect on the money downs a bit too easily.

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Washington State has been tough enough on defense, and Cameron Ward is a good enough quarterback, to pull this off, but …

Oregon is the real deal.

That’s not to say Wazzu isn’t, but the Ducks have settled in, the talent is in place to make a big run, and they’ll overcome the great atmosphere and energy to get out alive thanks to a few key takeaways and a good offensive balance.

Washington State vs Colorado State Game Preview

Why Colorado State Will Win

It has been a rough start for the Rams, but parts of this are quickly fixable.

The six turnovers in two games have been devastating. Be far more careful, and all of a sudden the offense that has decent parts should perk up.

No, the passing game hasn’t been great, but the midrange accuracy is there, it’s an efficient passing game, and on the other side, the defense doesn’t have to worry too much about the downfield passing game.

The Washington State offense has been fine, but nothing special so far. The Rams should be able to keep the big plays to a minimum, but ..

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Washington State Will Win

Yeah, there’s a reason the Wazzu passing game hasn’t gone off so far …

It had to deal with a Wisconsin defense that’s one of the best in college football.

The O sputtered, there were three turnovers, and … win. The Cougars got the job done.

The offense is and will be just fine as the season goes on, but it’s been the defense that’s been the star in the 2-0 start. It’s forcing takeaways, it’s great at generating a pass rush, and it shouldn’t have a problem this week against a Colorado State offense that’s miserable on third downs.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

The Washington State offense will come around, and it’ll start this week.

This hasn’t been the high-flying fun show it’s supposed to be, but QB Cameron Ward has been solid, the running game will be great this week now that it doesn’t have to deal with the Badger D – it won’t run much, but the yards per carry will be there – and Colorado State’s O will stall too often.

Wisconsin vs Washington State Game Preview

Why Washington State Will Win

Yeah, Wisconsin beat Illinois State 38-0, and yeah, the overall final defensive stats were just fine, but the secondary is still a work in progress.

The Redbirds marched down the field on the first drive, but the UW D came though with a 100-yard pick six to all but end the game in the first quarter.

Now the Badgers get to deal with Cameron Ward.

The Incarnate Word transfer quarterback didn’t set the world on fire in Wazzu’s 24-17 win over Idaho, but the running game was okay – helped by former Badger Nakia Watson’s 117 yards – and the passing game was hardly awful.

Now it’s time for Ward to turn it loose.

On the other side, the Cougar defense that came up with seven sacks and lived in the Vandal backfield should apply consistent pressure, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Wisconsin got its tune-up in.

It wasn’t quite as dominant as it should’ve been on the ground – a 96-yard Braelon Allen touchdown run made the overall stats better than the running game was – but Graham Mertz was terrific. He threw with confidence, was poised, and he looked like he’s ready to finally breakthrough.

Granted, that was against Illinois State, but it was a good first tune-up. Meanwhile, Idaho stayed alive against the Cougars with enough big plays through the air to make it interesting.

The Badger D, though, will be the backstop. It’ll get consistent pressure on Ward, and …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Be careful here. Wisconsin and its great defense traditionally has issues with the sharper, more sophisticated passing teams that test the secondary midrange to deep. Ward will get his shots in.

The problem will be the Badger power on the offensive front. It wasn’t quite there against Illinois State – again, despite the stats – but it’ll take over in the second half here.

There will be a few scary moments, but Wisconsin will have the ball for well over 35 minutes as it wears down the Cougars.

Washington State vs Idaho Game Preview

Why Idaho Will Win

The Vandals have to get the pass rush going early and keep it rolling. That’s hard to do considering how the Washington State passing game works, but the pressure has to be there from the start.

Top pass rusher Charles Akanno might be done, but the Vandals have parts from several spots that can get into the backfield.

Get the pass rush working, use the rotation of running backs to work the clock a little bit – averaging 4.5 yards per carry like the O did last year would be wonderful – and …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Washington State Will Win

Settle in for the Cameron Ward show.

Washington State was able to get the former Incarnate Word star quarterback to come in and run the attack, and now, look out.

Idaho might have a pass rush, but it won’t be consistent enough to bother Ward.

Idaho might have a running game, but it almost certainly won’t be enough to control the tempo.

The Vandal secondary will be iffy – to be nice about it – and after a quarter or so to get the timing down, Wazzu’s offense should get into a nice groove.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Idaho won’t be a total pushover.

It doesn’t have the talent or personnel to pull this off, but this is one of those neighborhood games – the two schools are only about ten miles apart – that brings out a little more fight than normal.

But Washington State usually annihilates that team to the east.

That will last about ten minutes, and then the Washington State will pick apart the Vandal secondary clean. A few Idaho turnovers will turn this into a rout in the second half.

Washington State Cougars Preview 2022

Washington State has been to six bowl games in the last seven seasons, with 2020 and that weird four-game campaign the lone outlier.

Cal can’t boast that. Stanford can’t make that claim. Oregon State can’t, either, and neither can USC or UCLA.

Washington hasn’t been to a bowl game in the last two seasons – granted, 2020 had something to do with that – but Washington State also had its share of adversity last year and figured it out.

Washington State hasn’t been a Pac-12 powerhouse, but it’s been solid, it finds ways to come up with enough wins to have successful seasons, and it only looks to get better with an upgraded offense to go along with some sneaky-good parts on D.

The Pac-12 is far better when Washington State is doing Washington State things with a high-powered offense rolling in high-scoring games, and that’s exactly what’s going to happen this year.

The conference needs a good Wazzu in this current expansion climate, and it’s about to get it.

Washington State Cougars Preview 2022: Offense

Last year Western Kentucky went from meh to magnificent offensively by getting all of the key parts from the Houston Baptist attack. Washington State’s 2021 offense was mediocre – even with the Pac-12’s second-best passing game, and now it’s about to be jump-started.

Welcome to the Incarnate Word attack.

Former UIW head coach Eric Morris comes in as the new offensive coordinator after his team finished sixth in the FCS in total offense, second in scoring, and averaged 360 passing yards per game. He’s bringing along …

Cameron Ward. He’s a good pro prospect passer who threw for 4,648 yards and 47 touchdowns last year for UIW and ran for a score. It’s his offense to run now with former starting quarterback Jayden de Laura going to Arizona.

Ward also gets one of his key targets to throw to. Robert Ferrel caught 74 passes for 815 yards and nine scores last year. He’ll join the mix with De’Zhaun Stribling back after catching 44 passes and and Donovan Ollie returning after a 26-catch season – those two are 6-2ish big targets who can work in a variety of ways.

The passing game will control the offense – it’s Washington State – but the ground game should be effective. Longtime all-around playmaker Max Borghi is done, but former Wisconsin Badger Nakia Watson should take on a bigger role along with good-looking freshman Jaylen Jenkins.

The line will do some shuffling. It struggled to keep defenses out of the backfield, and it didn’t do enough for the ground game when the O gave it a shot.

Center Brian Greene left for Michigan State, but Konner Gomness is a veteran who can step in. Guard Jarrett Kingston will likely move to tackle, and Northern Colorado transfer Grant Stephens will try to step in for all-star Abraham Lucas.

Washington State Cougars Preview 2022: Defense

The defense was good at not breaking after bending. It was the best in the Pac-12 in red zone defense, it wasn’t bad in the secondary, and it was solid on third downs, What it was really, really good at was taking the ball away, coming up with a Pac-12 high 29 takeaways.

The secondary is undergoing an overhaul, but the Cougars are set on …

The defensive line. The Wazzu front four has a First Team All-Pac-12 end in Ron Stone, a fellow all-star in Brennan Jackson on the other side, and a good rotation in the interior. The pass rush has to be stronger, but the experience and options should make this one of the team’s improved strengths.

The linebacking corps loses longtime star Jahad Woods and running mate Justus Rogers, but Daiyan Henley is coming in from Nevada after a 94-tackle, four-interception season at Nevada, and Travion Brown is a 230-pound veteran who can handle the middle.

The secondary isn’t starting over, but it’s getting a slew of new parts around third-leading tackler and All-Pac-12 nickel back Armani Marsh.

Jordan Lee made 142 tackles with a whole lot of big plays for Nevada over the last three seasons. He’ll step in at one safety job, and former Utah State Aggie Sam Lockett comes in from the JUCO ranks to make a push for the other spot.

Cam Lampkin made 72 tackles with ten broken up passes as a corner for Utah State. He’ll combine with 6-3 veteran Derrick Langford at corner.
