Budda Baker is Cardinals’ only 90-rated player in ‘Madden 24’

Baker is the seventh-highest rated safety in the game and the only Cardinals player to have a rating in the 90s.

EA Sports released player ratings for the upcoming “Madden NFL 24” video game on Monday. As the Arizona Cardinals are not expected to be very good in 2023, it is reasonable to not expect super high ratings on their players.

Only one, safety Budda Baker, had a rating in the 90s. His rating was…exactly 90.

This wasn’t received well by many, although that rating put him seventh among all safeties. The highest-rated safety is Derwin James of the Los Angeles Chargers at 95.

The others?

The Steelers’ Minkah Fitzpatrick is a 93, the Broncos’ Justin Simmons and the Titans’ Kevin Byard are both 92, while the Falcons’ Jessie Bates and the Saints’ Tyrann Mathieu are both a 91.

WATCH: Jaguars players react to their Madden ratings

Jaguars players weren’t pleased with their ratings in the new Madden game.

With the NFL season just around the corner, another time-honored tradition is also about to arrive: the annual release of EA Sports’ Madden NFL video game. And as reliably as you can count on sports games releasing every year, you can believe that players will be unhappy with their Madden rankings.

Jacksonville safety Rayshawn Jenkins is one of those players.

“Madden obviously don’t watch film,” Jenkins said in a video tweeted by the official Jags account. “How I been the same overall for the past four years? Come on, bro… go watch the film, go look at my stats. Do that for me.”

Not everyone feels the same way, though. Defensive end Dawuane Smoot, a 71 overall, said he was just happy to be rated higher than he was last year. Receiver Phillip Dorsett II, who is a 75 overall but possesses 93 speed, said he just wants his speed to be higher.

Tight end Chris Manhertz, who just joined the team from Carolina as a free agent, wasn’t happy to hear he had a 70 overall.

“That’s average,” he sighed.

Rookie running back Travis Etienne has a surprisingly high rating for a rookie, even one taken in the first round, at 76 overall. However, he wasn’t pleased with this either.

“It’s going to be up definitely after Week 1,” he said. “Don’t feel too good about that.”

He wasn’t the only rookie unhappy with a rating in the 70s. Cornerback Tyson Campbell (71 overall) said he should be much higher.

“I’m going to prove myself, it should be in the 90s, though,” he said.

Defensive end Josh Allen didn’t even want to talk about it.

“I already know mine, it’s disrespectful,” Allen said, though he wouldn’t elaborate. “I don’t really want to say, it’s not for TV purposes.”

If there’s anyone on the team who should be happy with their rating, it’s cornerback Shaquill Griffin, whose 85 overall is the third-highest on the team. But the free-agent acquisition from Seattle said he wants to be in the 90s.

“Madden, after this year I better be over a 90,” he said. “I ain’t playing with y’all.”

The Jaguars are certainly a team with a lot to prove this season, and perhaps the Madden ratings will provide yet another chip on the shoulder of a team that’s coming off a 1-15 season.

Watch: Jags QB Trevor Lawrence appears in ‘Madden NFL 22’ trailer

‘Madden NFL 22’ released it’s trailer on Thursday and Jags QB Trevor Lawrence was briefly shown in it.

Electronic Arts started their day by giving the football community another thing to look forward to on Thursday morning by unveiling a trailer for ‘Madden NFL 22.’ The footage came as the company also revealed the players who would be on the cover in former league MVPs Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes.

Many players were featured in the trailer around the league, including Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who was taken with the No. 1 overall pick.

It will be interesting to see what rating Lawrence (and the Jags) receive in this year’s game. Last year Joe Burrow was initially a 76, but Lawrence is a prospect most pundits feel is the highest-rated quarterback since Andrew Luck. As for the Jags, they were a 74 during the initial launch of ‘Madden NFL 21,’ which was the lowest rating in the game.

However, the Jags added some veteran help during the offseason, and on paper, their roster seems to have surpassed the Houston Texans’ with Deshaun Watson battling legal issues. With that being the case, the Jags could avoid being the worst overall team, but ultimately time will tell.

Yahoo’s ‘Madden NFL 21’ simulation says Jags traded away Super Bowl LV’s MVP

Yahoo Sport’s Madden simulation for the NFL’s upcoming season had some interesting things happen, including a former Jags being successful.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had a busy offseason in 2020 and a lot of the transactions made were to reallocate money as they entered the season with a questionable cap situation. On defense, that included the trades of A.J. Bouye and Calais Campbell, two players who were Pro Bowlers at least once with the team.

On offense, the Jags were able to put Nick Foles’ contract off on the Chicago Bears at the cost of taking a massive $18.7 million cap hit on the season, of course. This was doable because of the 2019 performance and extremely inexpensive contract Gardner Minshew II provided the team with, leaving them eager to see what they had in the sixth-round pick.

While in the real world the Jags got future cap relief from the decision to trade Foles, in the virtual world of ‘Madden NFL 21’ they may have made another mistake — at least according to Yahoo Sports. In their annual NFL season simulation, the Chicago Bears ended up winning Super Bowl LV and the MVP of the games was, you guessed it — Foles.

Here is what writer Anthony Sulla-Heffinger had to say about Foles in his 20 takeaways for the 2020 season simulation.

16. Nick Foles(yes, Nick Foles)wins NFL MVP. If you’ve made it this far, congrats, because you’re about to enter the “Madden” Twilight Zone. Foles finished with a league-best 4,801 yards, 44 TDs, 5 interceptions and 70 percent completion rate. If this was “Madden 2014,” I might buy this since Foles was coming off his 27-touchdown breakout with the Eagles. In 2020, I’d be hard pressed to find something less likely to happen.

In addition to Foles’ solid year and showing in the Super Bowl, the Bears also registered a 14-2 season before heading to the playoffs and beating the Kansas City Chiefs for the Lombardi Trophy by a score of 42-24.

17. Oh wait, I spoke too soon! The Bears had the league’s best record, finishing 14-2 before eventually advancing to Super Bowl LV against Kansas City.

18. Which of course … They won. The Chicago Bears won Super Bowl LV 42-24, with Nick Foles throwing for six touchdown passes and tying Steve Young’s record from Super Bowl XXIX.

Simply put, this could be a long shot in reality, but if it happens, it feels like the Bears elite defense would have to pull the weight. Basically, this would point to the Bears being a similar team to the 2017 Jags where the defense was a very good unit, but the quarterback play was sporadic.

Podcast: Previewing Jags’ “Madden NFL 21” ratings, training camp stories to watch

James and Phil discussed the Jags’ Madden ratings this week on “Bleav in the Jags” and prepped fans for camp with some stories to watch.

In this week’s episode of the “Bleav in the Jaguars Podcast,” Jags Wire contributor Phil Smith and I tackled the biggest topics of the week concerning the Jacksonville Jaguars: their “Madden NFL 21” ratings and training camp.

Starting in the first half of episode 23, we gave our opinions on the Jags’ individual ratings as the Jags didn’t have a single player rated in the 90s. Afterward, we discussed the Jags’ team ratings and looked at some key player attributes.

During the second half of the show, Phil and I discussed three training camp stories to watch as camp will begin for the Jags on Tuesday, July 28. Of course, Gardner Minshew was amongst them but we also looked at a defensive category for fans to watch and discussed another specific player to watch out for when the Jags take the practice field.

Jags’ C.J. Henderson, Lions’ Jeff Okudah land same “Madden NFL 20” rating

Despite Jeff Okudah craving the top-5 picks, he and C.J. Henderson will share the same “Madden NFL 20” ratings as rookies.

In just a few weeks, “Madden NFL 20” will be hitting the shelves and NFL fans alike will get to see their favorite players in Electronic Arts updated edition of the renowned series. And while the Jacksonville Jaguars’ full roster ratings haven’t been revealed, we found out the ratings of rookies Laviska Shenault Jr., Collin Johnson, and Jake Luton last week.

We can now officially add the Jags first selection of April’s draft to the mix, too, as it was revealed that both cornerbacks C.J. Henderson and Jeff Okudah were tied for the highest grades of any rookies at their position with a 76.

This is a little surprising as many expected Okudah to be rated a point or two higher than Henderson. However, it does indicate that Electronic Arts view them equally, though we don’t know their attribute ratings.

Heading into the draft, many pundits viewed Okudah as an elite prospect, however, some viewed Henderson as the better athlete. NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah was amongst them, as he explained why to Jags Wire and the media back before April before the draft.

“Well, I think there’s a real possibility,” Jeremiah said. “He ended up as my 21st player, but he’s my second corner, and you’re talking about a premier position that everybody is trying to fill at the corner position. That’s not a terrible reach if he were to be the ninth pick, and he’s got all the athletic ability in the world. He tested unbelievably well. He’s fluid and smooth.

My issues with him, why I see the difference between him and Okudah. He’s a better athlete than Okudah, but Okudah is a better football player. Okudah is tougher, Okudah tackles better. He finds and plays the football a little bit better.”

As for how Henderson and Okudah felt about their ratings, lets just say they didn’t seem all that impressed.

For those wanting a copy of the game, it will be out on August 2, though preorders are currently being taken by your local electronics stores.
